Bassett end of Holton Road,has been ensuring the men ofBarry look good about town.For generations the barber-

shop has served as a social hubwhere patrons swap and learnthe town’s stories while solv-ing the world’s problems froma barber’s chair.Former owner and award-

winner Andreas Asprou, 69,said: “It was fantastic in thosedays because we were verybusy. The styles changed a lotand the good thing about it wasthat we did a lot of shaves. Weused proper cut throats notblades.”Andreas added: “The best

time of my life was when I wonthe cup – you’ve proved to the

public you know your job andyou’ve made them happy.The barbershop has served

all walks of life, from promi-nent professionals such asdoctors, lawyers and judges toeveryday folk.The family business has, for

half a century, been making ittheir business to ensuremales,from young children to seniorcitizens, look the businesswhen they depart the shop.Mop tops and mohawks –

they’ve seen it all. The teamcan do whatever style youwant putting their expertskills to the test while engag-ing in some friendly chat.The team also cater for the

pre-wedding crew with pam-pering, not exclusively a ladiesdomain. Hot shave, a cool hair-style and some strong coffeeall help with walking up theaisle.

When Harry took over fromhis proud father it was an endof an era for the shop.It has grown into a tradi-

tional gent’s hairstylist wherecustomers can feel relaxed in afriendly atmosphere with am-bience.The shop has

gone through manychanges – includ-ing having the well-known ladies salonTangles and thenfinally going backto its roots to be atraditional gent’shairstylist.

With the shop’s nostalgiacomes a rich history of peopleand stories.On Friday, February 7, A&H

Asprou Barbers will be cel-ebrating the 50th anniversaryof trading.The shop has been a long-

time supporter of Sully-basedfamily hospice Ty Hafan rais-ing more than £1,000 over theyears to aid the charity in itsinvaluable work.And the family business has

seen generations of men walkin and out of the door, also
