I hope that all who review this first edition of our guide to architectural woodproducts manufactured in Wales find it informative and an easy reference documentto enable you to make contact with this world class industry.

It is our intention to expand the guide in future years, subject to satisfactoryfeedback, as well as providing the data on line. This pilot edition is designed toattract comment from all recipients so as to enable us to tailor and improve it tocater for as many people’s needs as possible.

We have felt for some time that the marketing of Welsh timber based products hasbeen less than satisfactory and this is our attempt to begin to redress this shortfall.Many of us use more than one medium to access data on products we are looking toacquire and we strongly believe there is a demand for printed reference books,catalogues and brochures. This will clearly not be the only form of promotionalactivity but one of a suite of initiatives that will enable the industry to beprofessionally marketed.

Those who have agreed to participate in this pilot are but just a fraction of thenumbers involved in this industry. We hope you find this "sampler" enticing. Guiding the development of thePOLYBOARD Joinery System has beenthe desire to produce quality productsthat can be installed and finished at alower total cost than traditionalconstruction.

To achieve this objective it is importantthat all costs are reduced to a minimum.

Installation costsIn particular we have paid attention toreducing the cost of installation. Thishas been achieved in two ways. Usingmodern production techniques we makejoinery components that are fullyfinished and quick to install. Also wehave developed simple fixing systems sothat no special skills are needed.Together, faster fixing and lower labourcosts can add up to big savings.

Snagging anddefects costsAccurately machined factory madeproducts improve quality. POLYBOARDjoinery products are designed to beinstalled at the end of the buildprogramme when the building is cleanand dry. As they will not swell, shrinkor split, remedial work during thesnagging or defects period will belargely eliminated.

Finishing and cleanup costsPOLYBOARD joinery products aredesigned to be fitted at the end of thebuild programme. Without doors orskirting boards in place the process offinishing walls and ceilings is muchfaster, particularly if paint is sprayedon. Time is saved cutting aroundskirting boards and architraves.Laminate floor can be installedwithout the risk of overpainting whenthe skirting boards are painted.

Cost controlFactory produced components ofconsistent size and quality have aknown unit price. Installation timeswill be consistent so installation costscan be pre-determined. Components inkit form deliver just the right amountof materials to site, eliminating wastearising from materials being damaged,lost or stolen.

Its small workforce of highly skilledcraftsmen have received commissionsfrom throughout the British Isles andEurope where work is completed usingsolid hardwoods, veneered boards or acombination of the two. This reducesthe cost but still has the appearanceof solid wooden furniture.

Our productsWork is also undertaken using sheetmaterials which can be finished incoloured lacquer to match existingschemes; this produces a more durableand superior finish than paint.Commissions from architects andinterior designers has often createdthe enjoyable opportunity of workingwith an ever changing range of newmaterials such as textured andcoloured MDF. Aware of the everincreasing demand on architects to beenvironmentally responsible in theirchoice of materials, we constantlysource certified, verified and assuredsolid timber and wood products, which

should be finished with durable andenvironmentally friendly coatings.

Our work is split into two distinctareas. Firstly, working for privateclients making bespoke furniture,tailored to their individual needs. This could be dining tables, chairs,sideboards or fitted storage units etc.The second area deals more with theprofessional sector including interiordesigners, architects and propertydevelopers. This has included makingreception desks for the WelshDevelopment Agency, a curved oak OPGenclosure with internal lead lining for anupmarket dentist and fitting out pubs,night clubs, shops and hotels. This hasgiven us the experience of working tostrict budget regulations and deadlinesalong with the necessity to workharmoniously alongside other trades.

We are able to offer a completeservice to all our customers fromdesign, through to manufacture, tofitting. Alternatively, we can work toclient's designs and specifications.

Our experience and knowledge hasoften proved useful in aiding designersin the early stages, helping to reduceproblems later. An example of this wasin SY 18 night club (see photo) Thearchitect set out the specification andlayout of the space. We created thedesign taking inspiration from thesuperb beams, ageing and distressingthe work to match.

Other photos show the reception desksmade to client’s design andspecification in order to accommodatewheelchair users. Materials used: solidtimber, flex MDF, stainless steel,linoleum and rubber tiles. Also shownare some furniture pieces and smallitems often used by designers to add afinishing touch.

QuotationsMany clients want budgets set forvarious designs or type of material.Oak can be five times as expensive assoftwood simply because the materialcosts are so much more. We offer afree fast quotation system. Singledesigns faxed to us can usually bereturned by the end of the next day. A service that many Architects andbuilders require.

DeliveryTraditionally staircases would take 6 to8 weeks to be delivered. However PearStairs have invested at least two and ahalf million pounds into ensuring acustomer receives a staircase from anagreed design within 7 to 10 days insoftwood or oak. We usually state 7 to10 days but deliver quite often within3 days. The 7 to 10 days is stated sothat we as a company can beat allcustomer’s expectations.

We sometimes take the stairs in ourhome for granted as a means ofgetting from one floor to another, butthis may not be the case in allproperties as it can be the mainfeature of the home. It can beconstructed to match your interiordesign ideas and/or period style of thehouse albeit modern or traditional.

When you walk in through the frontdoor the first thing you wouldnormally see is the stairs. This couldbe of simple design and constructionor a very elaborate type. Moststandard stairs, for example to fit intoa small semi, would be of softwoodconstruction.

In larger properties you could see alltypes of bespoke stairs in manylayouts and materials, ranging fromoak, ash, etc. There are many types ofstair designs and layouts: closed stringor cut string, open riser, winder, spacesaver, spiral, 1/2 landing, 1/4 space, dogleg and helical to name but a few.

The closed string stairs is probably themost common construction as it ismade with two solid strings which aretrenched out and then wedgedtogether, using softwood wedges fixedbehind the tread and riser; also angleblocks are glued into the underside ofthe stairs. This stairs could be usedbetween walls or have newel postsand balustrade on one side and isnormally carpeted.

The open riser stairs enables you tosee through them. When used in asmall room they can have the effectof making the room appear larger.They are also an attractivearchitectural feature. It is constructedwith either solid strings housed out totake the tread or can be manufacturedusing a blocked carriage. The stringswould be 250 x 50 and the treadsmachined from 250 x 50. It is also asafety requirement to have risers fixedin place so that the opening betweentreads is no greater than 100 mm.

The cut string stairs is very attractiveand can be manufactured using acombination of hardwoods andsoftwoods. Having a softwoodstaircase and using hardwood for thehandrail and balustrade is quitecommon. The cut string is constructedfor using a carriage with blocks, thewall string being trenched as a closedstaircase. The tread sails over thestring but the risers are mitred intofret cut brackets. The balusters arefixed onto the top of the treads andare of different lengths unlike theclosed string, which are all the same.These stairs are normally used inhomes with a large entrance hall andwould have large return galleries.

The spiral stairs is used when space is

at a premium and a conventional stairswill not fit. These stairs can be veryattractive and are sometimes used asa second stairs in a back area. Theyare constructed using a centre pole onwhich each tread is placed. A spacerof the correct rise is placed betweeneach tread and then bolted in place.The handrail is manufactured using aspecific gig set out, using thediameter and rise and go of the spiral.

The winder type staircase is normallyof closed string construction and madein softwood. Sometimes a cut stringwinder may be used and could bemade in hardwood. This type of stairswould be fitted where the going on thestairs is short or a change in directionis required. These could be single ordouble winder which would sometimesbe supported on a storey newel post.

The space saver stairs, also known asa paddle stairs, is used where thegoing is restricted and it is asecondary stairs going into a loft.Although this type of stairs is quitesteep, is very functional and could bemanufactured incorporating newelposts and balustrades in varioustimbers. This type of design wouldlimit the width to no more than 800overall strings.

The helical stairs is probably the RollsRoyce of stairs and would be installedin larger properties. It can be of a cutor closed string design andmanufactured in most availabletimbers. A full size circular jig wouldbe needed in order to laminate thestrings. This is specific to the rise a goof the stairs and also takes intoaccount the clear width required. Thestrings are trenched and cut by hand.The cut string is marked out and cutwhilst still in the jig. The closed wallstring would be removed and thenmarked out and trenched for the risersand treads, the curved handrail wouldalso be laminated using the same jig.

This stairs can be double cut, freestanding or fixed against a curvedwall. A large bull nose D step at thebottom with a volute also can be used.

Several different combinations ofhandrails can be produced for variousapplications. These include gooseneckramps, starting easing, up easing, overeasing and end caps; also tandemlevel, quarter turn and volute.

Newel posts and balustrades can comein various shapes and sizes, inhardwood or softwood. These wouldbe turned to pattern on a lathe or leftsquare

Alternative to this would be wroughtiron works made to suit. Stainlesssteel balusters for more contemporarydesigns are also available.

Most staircase layouts and designs aredown to the architect drawings andthe client’s requirements. In all casesthey should conform to the latestbuilding regulations.

There is no recommended width for atraditional staircase but 2000mmheadroom must be maintained and themaximum pitch not exceed 42˚ (PartK). Helical and spiral stairs must have800mm clear width (BS5395 Part 2).

For stairs serving one room a minimumwidth of 600mm must be maintained(approved document M). Forregulations regarding stairs for thedisabled please refer to approveddocument B, Building Regs. 1991.

Oak FramingEach frame is jointed from fresh sawn (green) Oak. The frame will generallybe a post and beam structure, i.e. aseries of posts, beams, studs andbraces supporting a trussed roofsystem. Floor structures are anintegral part of each frame, whereapplicable, using Oak chamber beamsand Oak joists.

Roof structures would traditionallycomprise of Oak trusses, purlins andrafters, however modern practicessometimes lend themselves toexposing only the trusses and purlinswith the common rafters being fromtreated softwood and covered withplasterboard or similar as a means toreducing the overall build cost slightly.

Each joint will be traditionallydrawpegged using seasoned Oak pegssupplied with the frame. As the pegabsorbs moisture from the beams, it expands and so tightens within the joint.

Frames which require glazing will bemachined from kiln dried or air driedOak so as to avoid distortion andshrinkage due to further seasoning.The glazing frames are usually fittedbetween the main green supportingposts incorporating an expandingweatherproof seal.

Timber is a natural productwhich will react to changes inatmospheric conditions. When an orderis dispatched, it will have beenrecently sawn or machined. With thepassage of time and variations in theweather, we cannot guarantee that thetimber will not move or crack a little –in fact an Oak frame is very likely todo just that. These subtle variationsand the mellowing of colour enhancethe natural appearance of the productand do not detract from its quality,strength or performance.

The unique open web designprovides an area in which plumbersand electricians will find it easy andconvenient to work. This makesinstallation of services and utilities farsimpler and quicker, reducing bothlabour costs and build-up time on site.

Floor CassettesThese are modular sections ofPosiJoists with the floor decking fixeddirectly to them in our factory so thecompleted floor is delivered to site insections allowing them to be craneddirectly into position to speed upconstruction and the avoidance ofworking at height installing floordecking on site - see opposite.

Timber Frame KitsThe Company began manufacturingtimber frame buildings during 2005 tosatisfy the increased demand fortimber frame construction. We use themost modern design software and tocomplement our truss and posi-joistfloors we are able to offer a one stopservice for a complete wall, floor androof design. We offer a completebespoke service to any customer’s

design with over 90% of our kits using140mm frame to maximise energyconservation. As part of our continuousdevelopment we will soon beintroducing a semi closed panel whereinsulation and internal covering isfixed offsite under factory supervision.

Erection ServiceWe offer an erection service for all ofour products using teams ofexperienced erectors. All aspects ofthe process can be co-ordinatedincluding crane hire if required. Ourteams are fully conversant with allsafe working practices.

Coed Cymru

Who are we?The Coed Cymru Partnership wasestablished in 1985 to ‘Use Protect andEnhance the Native Woodlands ofWales’. It consists of Wales AssemblyGovernment, its statutory agencies andthe Local Authorities and NationalParks throughout Wales.

What we doIt provides free help and advice on:

Coed Cymru has instigated 6,000woodland management and newbroadleaf planting projects since 1985.These cover 24,000 hectares in total.Half of these are Ancient and SemiNatural Woodland and many sites havespecial status for biodiversity, archae-ology and landscape. We run a currentFSC Group Forest Management SchemeSGS-FM/COC-0069.We have assisted with design andtimber supply on hundreds ofconstruction projects from thereconstruction of Neolithic temples tostate of the art joinery. Our researchand development seeks to use everypart of the tree as efficiently aspossible.

This includes the development of woodpellets and wood chip as fuel, the useof wood chip in animal bedding,mulches and horticultural compost.Over two decades we have developedclose working relations with many ofthe leading timber suppliers andmanufacturers in Wales and elsewherein the UK. As a public body we take noroyalties from the products and chargeno fee. We are completely impartial –provided you buy Welsh wood!

The aim is to fill the gap between harvesting native Welshwoodlands and manufacturing.

The Wentwood Timber Store isoperated in partnership with Adventaand SIREN as a social enterpriseoffering paid employment and trainingfor socially disadvantaged groups. Allstages of processing are carried outfrom harvesting, processing andmanufacturing.

Wentwood Timber CentreEstablished in 2002 by MonmouthshireCounty Council to provide a stockpileof local hardwood timber for the useby businesses and the wider public,and to provide a centre for theconversion of local hardwood, air andkiln drying of sawn material and toprovide a quality continuous supply ofmaterial. The timber centre has FSCchain of custody on its timber whichcertifies that is it sourced fromenvironmentally sustainable forests.

The timber centre comprises threeelements, a sawmill offering bespokeconstructional timbers along sideconversion of material for the Timberstore. The Timber store has a rollingstock of approx 200cum of timber instick air drying and 20cum of kilnedtimber. The Timber Workshop operatedby SIREN in partnership with Adventamanufactures a standard range ofproducts including doors, mouldings,garden furniture along with makingbespoke items.
