Clark Adelman, PresidentDear Members and Friends,

Summertime is an opportunity for visiting family, enjoying vacations, chasing that extra round of golf or just enjoying some quiet time. However, activity in our synagogue is constant. Rabbi Wohl and his volunteers continue to make arrangements for interesting and exciting programs and services for all of us. Our Shabbat services continue to be inspiring. Rabbi offers informative and thought provoking sermons and our discussions during our Kiddush lunches are stimulating.

Please try to make some time to participate with us on Shabbat mornings. I know you will be fulfilled by joining with your fellow members on Saturday and also on Sunday mornings.

While all of us have our own beliefs and observances, Agudath Achim Congregation is a conservative synagogue. We are members of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Therefore, whatever our personal beliefs are, we must observe the laws of Conservative Judaism while in the synagogue. Rabbi Wohl is our steward of Jewish Law. I will highlight some of the things that must be observed while in our facility: •We must observe kashrut laws – no non kosher items may be brought into the synagogue. Rabbi Wohl has agreed that coffee can be brought from the outside into the synagogue. Otherwise, all items must have the Kosher symbol. •There is absolutely no writing in the synagogue on the Sabbath and holidays.

•No photography on the Sabbath and holidays (we do allow a video camera to be set up for Bar/Bat Mitzvahs). •The use of cell phones or other electronics is not permitted on the Sabbath and holidays. For people on call, they should go out of the building to take their calls. All cell phones should be silenced while in the synagogue.

Agudath Achim suffered another terrible loss this June with the passing of Jerry Wayne, of Blessed Memory. As we all know, Jerry’s grandfather, Nathan Wayne, is one of the founders of our congregation. Jerry proudly served Agudath Achim in various leadership roles and most recently as our House Committee Chairman. Jerry attended to every detail and was responsible for Agudath Achim’s numerous physical enhancements over the years. Jerry was committed to Agudath Achim and we offer our sincerest condolences to Janet and her family.

We can never fill Jerry’s shoes, but his sudden departure reminds us that the next generation must stand ready to lead and serve our wonderful congregation.

So much happens on a day to day basis at Agudath Achim because we have been fortunate to be guided by so many who have been on auto pilot. But when one of our pilots is taken from us, the rest of us need to step up and assume roles in our congregation. We need you to serve as new committee chairpersons, new board members and officers, and dedicated members to become and remain involved in our synagogue that has a beautiful history that we are all so proud of. We have accomplished a lot, but our job and responsibilities never end. Get involved and help continue our proud past and help create our future.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer, spend some time in your Schul, and believe it or not, the High Holidays are almost upon us. Please find our High Holiday schedule in this Shofar. Rabbi Wohl and Cantor Susan Steinman will be leading us again this year. I look forward to seeing you at services.

The Power of Silence in a Shiva HouseThe Biblical figure Job was befallen by a great number of disasters. Within a matter of days, he had lost his fortune, his children were killed and he was afflicted with extremely painful boils. Job’s seven closest friends visited him during his time of mourning and immediately they tore their garments, wept and sat on the ground with him. “For seven days and nights they didn’t speak, for they saw that his grief was very great” (Job 2:12-13). Only when Job had the strength to pour out his heart did his friends finally articulate their thoughts. The Talmud uses this incident as its basis for our behavior in a Shiva house. “Comforters are not permitted to say anything until the mourner has first commenced to speak: (Moed Kattan 28b).”We live in a world filled with noise. We turn the radio on as soon as we get into our cars, we flip through the channels on the television after work, we constantly text our friends and family members to avoid the feeling of loneliness. For most of us silence is uncomfortable, silence is scary and yet our tradition instructs us to let it guide us when comforting a mourner. Many of you might be surprised that our default setting in a house

of mourning is silence. How could this be? The rationale is that the primary objective of a Shiva call is to comfort the mourner. Yet even with our closest friends, we can’t always know what the mourner needs. Perhaps we comment on the deceased and all the mourner wants is to take their mind off their pain and discuss a lighthearted topic. Or conversely, some visitors will tell a joke or bring up the latest Penn State football game to lighten the mood, when what the mourner really needs is someone’s shoulder to cry on as they pour out their heart. Each mourner is different and Judaism teaches us that it is our responsibility to adapt to their needs and not the other way around.Inevitably, we will encounter friends and neighbors at a Shiva house and our natural inclination will be to schmooze. In moderation this is fine but we should remember that the appropriate topic of conversation is the deceased and that the primary purpose of a Shiva call is to comfort the mourner, not to socialize. Let me also stress that mourners are usually exhausted from the emotion of having lost a loved one and seeing so many friends and family in their home. A typical Shiva visit should last no longer than an hour as it is discourteous to overstay your welcome. The traditional phrase offered when leaving a Shiva house is “May God comfort you among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.” Most of us will and should offer our personal condolences. However, you should know that the theology behind our traditional expression is that while we do our best, only God alone can grant the mourner lasting comfort. Making a Shiva call is one of the great mitzvahs that members of the synagogue can perform as it grants us the holy opportunity to partner with God in comforting those who are grieving.

Penn State Altoona Recognizes Honorary Alumnus with Dinner at Schreyer House

Posted on Thursday, June 28, 2012

More than sixty family and friends celebrated Nancy Devorrls’ selection for the Penn State Honorary Alumni Award with a serles of activities organized by Penn State Altoona’s Development and Alumni Relations team.

Guests first gathered for a late afternoon reception in the Aaron Building In downtown Altoona on May 31, 2012. Chancellor Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry offered a champagne toast shortly before everyone boarded a chartered bus for the trip to Schreyer House on the University Park campus, site of a reception, dinner, and program.

The formal program included tributes by Nancy and Don’s grandchildren, a videotaped message from a granddaughter who was unable to attend, and remarks by Or. Bechtel-Wherry. Also, a video highlighting the special

moments and people in Nancy’s life was presented during the dinner.

“When it comes to philanthropy and leadership, Nancy’s prlmary motivation is never self-interest,” said Lori Bechtel-Wherry. “It is nrst and foremost the giving of oneself In service to a program, initiative, or event that improves the quality of life for others in a significant way. In matters relating to the growth and development of Penn State Altoona, I have found Nancy to be passionate, enthusiastic, and engaged. On a personal level, I have been moved by her compassion, generosity, and warmth. On behalf of our entire University, I express heartfelt congratulations to Nancy on her selection for the Honorary Alumni Award, andl sincere thanks for a profound legacy of support.”

Nancy Devorris’ Involvement has included service on Penn State Altoona’s Grand Destiny Campaign Steering Committee and sixtieth anniversary organizing committee. The Oevorrlses co-chaired Penn State Altoona’s first Renaissance Fund Dinner in 2005 which raised nearly $100,000 for the William J. Rossman Renaissance Fund Scholarship.

The Devorris’ legacy of philanthropic support has been defined by gifts that have benefited numerous academic programs and special initiatives throughout the University. In March 2010, the couple was invited to serve as Presidential Counselors. This group of advisors is chosen from individuals who have distinguished themselves through their exemplary philanthropic and voluntary contributions to the University over many years.

“The presentation of the Honorary Alumni Award to Nancy is a fitting tribute to a loyal ambassador and faithful friend of Penn State,” said Bechtel-Wherry. “Our entire Penn State Altoona community joins with Nancy and her family in celebrating this prestigious honor.”
