DVC Alpha Gamma Sigma is the California Community College Scholastic Honor Society at Diablo Valley College.
The purpose of this organization is to foster, promote, maintain and recognize scholarship.
The function of the state organization is to encourage local chapters to develop, in themselves or in cooperation with other chapters, programs offering cultural, social, or enrichment experiences as part of the total experience of community college students.
The state organization annually award scholarships to its members and encourages its chapters to provide opportunities for participation in service activities as well as award scholarships of their own.
Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) is an honors’ society that was established in 1926 by Dr. William T. Boyce. In 1940 AGS was incorporated under California law.

Highlights: AGS Report
UC Personal Insight Questions WorkshopWe invited Tom Barber, who is the English Professor in
Diablo Valley College, and he presented us to appeal how great the school you’re applying to is and how do we separate or distinguish ourselves from the other competitors. We discussed the examples of UC Personal Insight Questions which the past students actually wrote. We also did the brainstorm activities to explore our personality and future goals. “If you see that you’ve made a mistake in your essay, don’t worry

UC/CSU Transfer WorkshopCareer and Transfer Services provided us the
information of UC/CSU to transfer. UC/CSU application should be submitted on November 1-30, 2017. This workshop supported students to get ready for their transfer. Response times for UC/CSU application is around March to April, so make sure to check update for its information in January. Plus, the workshop also indicated “The Transfer Day” which is held on October 20th, 2017 from 10AM–2PM. The workshop also reminded UC Personal Insight Questions, and it mentioned that
“Don’t stretch your answers in your questions, just be honest, use your real voice”

TAG WorkshopOn Wednesday September 6th, Career and Transfer Center
provided the information of TAG that how to fill out online TAG application and how to apply for admission to UC during the appropriate filing period. This TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) workshop helped prospective UC transfer students track and plan their coursework. It explained that we must complete 60 units by end of next Spring and must complete 30 UC transferable units by September filing. Most UC’s will post TAG decisions by November 15th. Both TAG and Admission Application must be submitted in order for TAG to be valid.
On October 21st, Fall 2017 Northern Regional Conference was held at Cañada College. Eth Chapter was mainly directed all chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma, and AGS members had the opportunities to join varieties of academic workshops. The main theme of this conference was “Human Rights” which the United Nations General Assembly also indicated in Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December 10th 1948, and Nancy Flowers, who was the keynote speaker of the
conference let AGS members to discuss what the civil society facing and how do we think of the human rights. There were ten workshops was held during the day such as personal brand, flexible leaderships, and what success is. Workshops were held by speakers such as faculty, AGS students, and community activists to promote students in scholarly endeavors. Eventually, Fall 2017 In the afternoon, we contributed to Student Trustee election. This conference was considered to interact AGS chapters, and their attempt was fully transmitted to us. AGS members could communicate with diverse fellow Northern AGS chapters, share each college experience, and gain knowledges by joining this conference. As AGS Honor Society Gamma Psi Chapter, we had a wonderful day in Fall 2017 Conference, and we are looking forward to participate in upcoming Spring 2018 AGS Conference.

Resume Building WorkshopWe invited Mark Isham, who is the Counselor and Career
Professor, for the Resume Building Workshop on October 25th, 2017. Resume is necessary to get the job, and Isham presented how to write an effective resume to adopt by companies. Resume is a marketing tool of individuals to get process for the interview, and it organizes lists of person’s education, experiences and skills. Islam explained to us what do we have to write or not on resume, and brought the examples of multiple resume to think of what the proper resume is. He showed for preparation of resume, it needs to be identified occupation which is related to the job that you will apply, identified desirable skills, academic skills, and qualifications. Especially, he focused on Chronological vs. Functional resume. Chronological resumes focus on experience. It is more common format and highlights your work history and how you have progressed within an industry. Functional resumes focus on skills, and it highlights accomplishments and skills, minimizes the work history. Additionally, hybrid/combination resumes focus on skills and highlights accomplishments and skills, while still providing work history. Both versions should be cleaned, concise and free from typographical errors. We thanked to Mark Isham for joining us as our presenter for the Resume Building Workshop, and AGS is honored to have the support of phenomenal professionals.
Isham also explained about the cover letters to fill in places your resume cannot describe. He indicated that the cover letter composed by three paragraphs to write 1st TELLS: Why are you writing this letter, SELLS: Why are you the best candidate for this job, and CLOSE: indicate flexibility and availability and thank the employer for their time. Should be tailored to each job you apply for and describe exactly how your skills and experience (you) are a good fit. This is an opportunity for you to show enthusiasm and personality. This workshop was helpful to build up our resume and the cover letter, and learned by Islam to sell yourself and speak with passion and enthusiasm.
The Berkeley Project was created by undergraduate students who considered about student service to increase the level of social conscience, and they have believed that communities can make the positive change to their own community and make the high-impact to the modern society, therefore, the communities need to unite and communicate each other. There were more than 25 sponsors donated for this project, and ended with Halloween themed after-event. Check their websites, Facebook or Instagram if you are interested in.
The Volunteer Committee links between participants and the core of Berkeley Project, and it
runs training sessions and other social events.
The Berkeley ProjectIn October 28th, 2017, The Berkeley Project was held by the student body successfully. There were about 1,500 volunteers gathered to serve the city of Berkeley in various ways to make the relationship strengthened between the university and their community. We cooperated with DVC NAMI and contributed to clean up the city of Berkeley successfully and recognized that we have a strong connection with Berkeley as a member of the student committee. The first large event was started from 2006, and the project has developed until today.
Expanding Your HorizonsIn November 4, 2017, AGS members volunteered STEM project which was held by Expanding Your Horizons. EYH is a conference for middle school girls, and the mission of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) is to inspire and recognize their potential and interests in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics field. We distributed in each section, and supported their workshops with hands-on activities as the assistant. We also provided a lunch to the guests, listened to a keynote speaker, Julie Derby Jaecksch, who is currently an instructor for “Crime Scene Investigation” @ DVC, and did door prizes for the girls. There were about 300 middle school girls and guests came to the conference and we had a valuable time.
Julie Derby JaeckschJulie developed a love of school & books at an early age and became a life-long learner. Julie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Maryland in 1982. Julie retired from the Oakland PD in 2015 after 25 years of service. She began teaching at Diablo Valley College in January of 2016. Julie believes that it is important to allow students to explore new possibilities and search for answers. She likes to spark the imaginations of her students and encourages them to be curious and ask lots of questions.
