ADC prepares to host the 2nd Annual Horse Auction in September... Saddle up and head for the Saline County Fairgrounds on September 15. The Arkansas Department of Correction Agriculture Division will host its second public auction of horses. That day the public will have the opportunity to bid on approximately 32 horses and 2 mules retired from the ADC’s working herd. Those interested in bidding on the animals may view and ride them from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 14 at the Saline County Fairgrounds. They may be viewed from 8:00 a.m. until noon September 15, and the sale will begin at 1:00 p.m. These horses—some of whose lineage can be traced to the legendary sire Joe Hancock—are perfect for pleasure and trail riding. Hancock was a big, stout and tough quarter horse who became a match racing sensation in Texas and Oklahoma. He lived from 1923 to 1943 and sired 15 foal crops that produced 155 registered foals. ADC has crossed quarter horses with draft horses through the years to develop the current working herd. Crossing the two has made a better line of horses for the prison system and most are not high spirited.

These horses are an example of ADC’s working herd.

Rules for the Auction: Horses must be paid for in full before loading. If horse cannot be loaded out the day of the sale, arrangements need to be made with an ADC official. Horses will only be held until 12:00 a.m. the next day. Personal checks, cash, money orders, or certified checks are excepted. Must have valid identification. If disagreement with auctioneer, the bid will begin over at last bid taken. For safety once the auction begins, public will need to be seated in the auction arena, no longer viewing animals. If you are moving your animal out of state, Dr. Tim Knight veterinarian, will be available for health papers. Once the animal is loaded on a trailer for transport, it becomes the property of the owner. Certification papers of Coggins test will be available for each animal. It is the desire of the Arkansas Department of Correction to maintain a satisfactory relationship with the buyer, both honesty and integrity in the representation of the horses. Arkansas Department of Correction Agriculture Division is proud of the horses and their use.
