Information regarding the Density of Poultry and Premises Registered in GB Poultry Register (PDF 365KB) and the Density of Premises and Poultry Species Registered on the GB Poultry Register (PDF 1.63 MB) is available. We continue to remind keepers that there is a requirement to register and continue to take new registrations (of premises with 50 or more birds) for those who haven’t had the need to register to date. New registrations must be notified within one month of the birds being acquired. In order to keep the register up to date you are required to notify us of any significant changes to informa-tion you have already supplied. This should be done as soon as possible and in any event within one month of the changes happening.

Voluntary registrations•We encourage premises with less than

50 birds to register on a voluntary basis.

Who has to register?By law* you must register if you own or are responsible for a poultry premises with 50 or more birds. This requirement also applies even if the premises is only stocked with 50 or more birds for part of the year. At present, premises with fewer

than 50 birds are not required to register, but we encourage keepers to do so volun-tarily.

This does not necessarily mean 50 of one species (although this may be the case) but 50 overall, for example if you have 30 chickens, 15 geese, 4 ducks and 1 rhea you need to register.

The decision to restrict the require-ment to register to flocks of 50 or more birds, was based on advice from experts who consider that smaller flocks are less likely to play a significant role in the spread of disease. It is a priority to focus on gathering information from these larger flocks. However, it is pos-sible for owners of smaller flocks to register on a voluntary basis should they so wish and we would encourage them to do so.

New model for 2012: Zetor Forterra HSX – a smart choice for everyoneTraditional Czech agricultural technology manufacturer Zetor has expanded its line of time-tested tractors this year. The new Forterra HSX offers many technological innovations that ensure higher performance, comfort and safety and also significantly raise its use value.

One of the main innovative features of this model, with its new generation four-cylinder turbocharged motor, is its HSX reverse gear, which makes tractor control much easier.

Excellent durability and low fuel consumptionThe new five-gear synchronized gearbox enables speeds of 30 + 30, along with a three-stage automatic torque multiplier with pressure increased to 19 bar. The engine has high torque backup (34%), enhanced ability to start even at very cold temperatures, excellent durability and low fuel consumption. Its high perfor-mance is guaranteed not only by modified cylinder heads, but also by enhanced hydraulic valves and the new fuel injec-tion system. The engine is also equipped with a particular filter to lower emissions.

The new electro-hydraulic power shuttle provides greater ease and use value. Shifting of the PTO drive shaft is also hydraulically controlled. Two external auxiliary hydraulic cylinders ensure uniform load distribution on the tractor and a lifting force up to 7,000 kg. The reliability of the hydraulic system is secured by a moderated pressure filter. With its 2,490 mm wheelbase, the Forterra HSX is more stable and safer.

HitchTronic – revolutionary innovation for all types of terrainAnother innovation is Zetor’s patented revolutionary automatic HitchTronic rear three-point suspension control, which

allows the tractor to adapt to any terrain as it is ploughing. Whether you are a begin-ner or an experienced driver, your work will become much easier and efficient. The quality of soil or the type of equipment doesn’t matter. Moreover, when using HitchTronic, you also save fuel, thus help-ing to protect the environment. The HitchTronic system was market launched just a few months ago and Zetor is already winning recognition for it; at the interna-tional exhibition Agrotech 2012 in Poland it was awarded a gold medal.

Safe, comfortable and compatibleThe dash board comes equipped with an

LCD display that shows information for operation and servicing in a more user-friendly and clearly structured format. In the driver’s seat there is a safety switch which prevents the engine from starting or the tractor from setting in motion when the driver is not seated. The mounting of the cabin on silent blocks and use of combined flooring has greatly reduced transmission of noise and vibrations to the driver’s cabin.

Remarkable performanceZetor tractors are robust and necessi-tate only minimum maintenance and low operating costs. The same applies to the new model Forterra HSX, which can also use biofuel and bio-oil. The remark-able performance of this model will enable you to utilise larger capacity equipment; it may also be aggregated with various combinations of agricul-tural equipment. Consequently, the number of field traverses is decreased, which - along with the low-profile tyres that may be also used for this model – helps reduce soil compaction. The trac-tor is compatible with agricultural attachments of domestic and foreign origin or special aggregations in forestry or construction.

Forterra HSX was introduced to the UK at Royal Highland Show 2012. Price for the Forterra 140 HSX on 600/65 R38 rear rubber with solid rims, Dromone push back pick up hitch and three year war-ranty is £43,516 (on farm price).

SPECIAL FEATURE

Pneumatic seed drills entered the product range in 1997. Since that time, more than 15,000 drills have been produced making Lemken one of Europe’s leading drill man-ufacturers. Whilst many manufacturers have focussed on cost of crop establish-ment, Lemken’s policy has always been to prioritise quality of seed placement. This policy has resulted in the development of the double disc and press wheel coulter arrangement, which has become increas-ingly popular. In 2011 95% of all Lemken drills were sold with this feature. As a result, the company has now discontin-ued its Suffolk coulter option on all drills.

Double disc and press wheels ensure every seed is placed at the same depth. This is not true for Suffolk coulters which provide a constant pressure but varying seed depth as soil conditions change across the field. In addition to the improved depth control, the rear press wheel provides consolidation which helps soil-to-seed contact encouraging high germination rates.

In common with Lemken’s focus on quality of seed placement, the company has developed a trapeze roller range for fitment to power harrows and other cul-

coulter press wheel. The reduced con-solidation between the seed rows improves drainage. Consolidation, around the seed, improves germination. Better drainage, between rows, avoids seed rotting. From a practical perspec-tive, this type of roller is claimed to over-come the bulldozing problem often encountered with toothed packer rollers in wet soil conditions.

Lemken’s drill range includes mechani-cal and pneumatic models. Working widths range from 2.5m to 12m with models offered to suit plough-based or minimum-tillage situations. The Saphir mechanical drill range is available in 2.5, 3 & 4m work-ing widths and can be mounted on Lemken power harrows or non-powered cultivators. The Solitair range of pneumatic drills starts from 3m width, and extends to 12m. Options allow the drills to be used alone, mounted on non-powered cultivators, or mounted on power harrows, dependent on working width.

An increasingly popular drill model is the 4m folding power harrow drill combi-nation. Unlike many competitors’ machines, the Solitair 9 mounted on Zirkon 10, hydraulically folds to 3m width for transport, without need for a front tank. Power harrow and drill fold neatly to the side of the 1,850 litre tank. This avoids the need to tie up a tractor with front tank, and pipes along the bottom or side of the tractor. The drill combination can be quickly removed as a result. Furthermore, the front linkage can be used for an additional machine such as front press.

A final feature, worth note, is the option to add an additional front fertiliser tank. Typically, a 2,300 litre front tank carries fertiliser, with the rear 1,850 litre tank carrying the seed. This gives a high overall capacity for those growers sowing spring crops who prefer to place fertiliser at the point of drilling. If the machine is used without fertiliser, both tanks can be filled with seed providing high area output between fills.

tivators on which the drill is mounted. This roller is made up of rings aligned with the seed rows. Therefore, the soil is consolidated under the seed by the tra-peze roller, and above the seed by the

Lemken’s 3m Solitair drill is the preferred choice for many growers, its doubledisc and press wheel coulters providingthe optimum environment for seed establishment. Now this popular drill can be mounted on either a Zirkon power harrow, or a Heliodor disc harrow.

High forward speed in a min-till situation is ideally achieved with the Heliodor disc harrow underneath. Thedrill can be quickly transferred to a Zirkon power harrow, if needed, to work on wet ploughed soil - increased flexibility from LEMKEN.

John Deere highlighted its award-winning engineering apprenticeship programme at Cereals 2012 with the publication of a new training prospectus, as part of the event’s aim to promote training and careers in farming.

Aimed at young people aged 16 to 19 interested in a career in landbased engineering, the prospectus provides details of John Deere’s Ag Tech, Turf Tech and Parts Tech apprentice technician and parts training programmes. These are managed by training provider Babcock, who deliver 10 per cent of all work-based apprenticeship programmes in the UK.

“We want to get across the message that the agricultural and turf machinery industry is an exciting, challenging and reward-ing career choice for young people,” says John Deere Limited’s training manager Chris Wiltshire. “Apprentice technicians will very quickly find themselves working with highly sophisticated equipment, from computerised controls and satellite navigation systems to advanced, fuel-efficient engines and Formula 1 transmission technology.

“John Deere dealer service technicians are trained in engineer-ing, electronics, hydraulics, diagnostics, communication skills, computing, sales and marketing. The need for skilled people working in our industry has never been greater, and we believe that these training programmes offer an ideal career develop-ment path to anyone with a keen interest in engineering.”

The programmes are based at Babcock’s purpose built training facility in Ruddington, near Nottingham, not far from the John Deere Training Centre at Langar. The John Deere apprenticeship is the first landbased agricultural and turf machinery pro-gramme with training delivered in the workplace, with assess-ment and guidance from Babcock’s team of expert learning advisers.

Technicians on the programmes work towards City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. Ag Tech and Turf Tech apprentices can go on to gain the John Deere Diploma and reg-ister at LTA Level 2 in the industry’s Landbased Technician Accreditation scheme, while starting their adult training within

A tractor for demanding workCDC Contractors is based in Sizewell, Suffolk and has diversified from smallholding to landscaping and grounds maintenance work

During the 2010 season McHale introduced a new model, the 991 High Speed, a machine which can deliver 50% more output.

Sales Manager at McHale - John Biggins explained, “Over the last number of years contractors have been asking for a higher output bale wrapper. This demand has come about due to baler output increasing and also the move by some contractors to wrapping bales with six layers instead of four.”

“We have tested the 991 High Speed against the 991BE (a machine which is recognised in the market place as having an output of 60 bales per hour). For the test we made sure that oil flow and table rotations were the same. What we found was the

991 High Speed could wrap 3 bales while the 991BE could wrap two. Therefore it is fair to day that the 991 High Speed has 50% more output or can wrap 3 bales, while a similar single dispenser machine wraps two.

The 991 high speed features the following1. DispensersTwo 750mm aluminium dispensers maintain a consistent stretch, which maximises film usage. The dispenser units con-sist of two aluminium rollers, which are geared to each other with robust steel gears of different ratios. The dispensers are

The family firm have a major contract for the local authority, cutting grass on public paths over a twelve week period split into two six week cuts with a flail mower. The varied terrain, high work-load and tough vegetation means that a tractor mounted flail is the most effi-cient combination for this job and Tim Blowers of CDC Contractors relies on a Kubota STV32 purchased last August for tractor power. “We had a Kubota STA before and the STV32 is the latest ver-sion,” he explains. “The previous tractor lasted five years and did 2200 hours with no costs except servicing, so we knew we were getting a reliable, strong tractor, which is essential for this job.”

The new model gives more horse-power but is still narrow enough to work

on footpaths. “There is plenty of power to drive the flail through tall or rough grass – in some parts it can be up to 60cm high and cover the extensive areas that we work across,” comments Tim.

The three speed HST transmission is also highly effective for the grass cutting work, as he explains: “We’re always work-ing at the right speed – you can slow up when cutting a heavy patch of grass and then move on once you are through it.”

Selectable four-wheel drive also copes well with wet areas and banks. In tighter areas, Kubota’s Bi-Speed Turn feature helps to avoid turf damage, using increased wheel speeds to limit ‘tyre drag’ and scuffing over grass surfaces.

Tim’s new tractor has also proved its versatility, being used for rotavating,

power harrowing, sowing grass seed and pulling trailers on landscaping con-tracts outside the grass cutting season.

Dealer TNS provided initial servicing, but subsequent maintenance is done in house by CDC Contractors’ own fitter and Tim comments that the Kubota STV32 is ‘excellent to work on’. Operator comfort also comes in for praise, with the tilting steering wheel and well-pad-ded seat being easy to adjust for the perfect driving position for each opera-tor. Tractors are normally kept for four years, maintaining a good resale value. “This is an ideal tractor for the demand-ing work that we do,” concludes Tim. “The performance of our previous Kubota tractor was outstanding and this STV32 is proving to be even better.”

Introduction to the McHale 991 High SpeedOver the last two decades McHale bale wrappers have become the brand of choice for Farmers and Contractors who have looked for high output reliable machines.

stepped so that there is an overlap where the two sheets of plastic come together.

2. Lift Arm & Wrapping TableThe lift arm can be activated with the press of a button; this will load the bale and return the lift arm to a position, which is clear of the table before the lift arm starts.

The round bale wrapping table on the 991 High Speed round bale wrapper is constructed of four heavy-duty belts, which ensure smooth and even bale rotation even when dealing with loose or asymmetric bales. A smooth wrapping seal is guaran-teed as the machine delivers a 50% overlap. Shear bolt protection ensures that asymmetric shaped bales do not damage the machines gearbox or drive line.

3. Cut and TieThe McHale hydraulically operated cut and tie system cuts and holds the film in position ready top wrap the next bale. This time saving device eliminates the need to manually reattach the film.

The McHale cut and tie is designed in such a way that as it gathers the plastic to one point before it is cut, it pulls the plas-tic against the side of the bale so that tail are minimised from both rolls.

4. Quick Fit DispensersFilm loading is made easy on the machine with the McHale lock and load system. When the operator removes the core of the empty film roll, the top roller locks in the open position, when the new roll is loaded the operator simply pulls the cord at which point the top roller is released and locks the roll in position.

5. Damper SystemThe uniquely designed McHale Patented Bale Damper system is probably one of the most important features of the McHale 991 High Speed Bale wrapper. The bale damper system will gently lower the bale to the ground and at the same time eliminate the stress on the chassis of the machine. When the rotating table stops and is raised to the tip position, the heavy-duty damper

raises to cradle the bale, while the second arm is lowered auto-matically to the ground. This allows the heaviest of bales to be gently lowered eliminating any damage.

6. 991 High Speed Control ConsoleThe cab mounted control console is the operator’s link to this high output machine. The operator is kept up to date on key machine operations through the graphic display. From the con-trol console, the operator can select;

the auto bale load function. the auto bale tip function. the number of film layers to be applied to the bale. single roll wrapping mode.

While the 991 High Speed is fully automatic in operation, the operator can select various options depending on ground conditions.

7. Automatic Film Break SensorsThe 991 High Speed is fitted with film break sensors, which monitor the plastic as it is applied to the bale. Should one roll of plastic break or run out, the machine will detect this and notify the operator through the control box and automatically switch to single dispenser mode. The machine then continues to wrap the bale but slows bale rotation and increases the num-ber of table rotations to compensate for the broken roll. This ensures that bales are always wrapped correctly.

8. Wrapping with one Roll of filmIn either of the following cases;

you arrive at a job and only one roll of film is supplied you are down to your last roll of film

The operator can manually adjust the dispenser post height to its maximum position using the height adjustment handle. When in this position the roll of plastic can be put on the dis-penser closest to the tractor, with this dispenser position the plastic will be applied to the centre of the bale to ensure the correct overlap. The operator can then select the “X1” button on the control console and allow the machine to operate as a single dispenser machine.

A consignment of 20 new McCormick tractors is being handed over to one of Britain’s leading tractor rental companies.

Hawk Tractors will supply the MTX and XTX six-cylinder machines to farmers and contractors throughout Britain as part of a fleet that continues to expand to meet demand for short- and long-term hire.

“We now have more than 270 tractors, including tracked machines at the top end of the power scale,” says John Smith, oper-ations manager. “Having a cross section of tractor makes and models gives a choice of power output, features and sophistica-tion for customers with different needs and preferences.”

Hawk Tractors is a division of Hawk Group, a £70m business supplying oper-ated and self-drive rental plant from its new headquarters base near Whitchurch, Shropshire and a branch at Blythbridge near Peebles, south of Edinburgh.

The agricultural division, run by a team experienced in the farming industry, manages a fleet of telescopic handlers as well as tractors.

“Customers hire our machines for just three or four weeks or for several months,” explains John Smith. “They take them to supplement their own tractors when extra units are needed or to have use of a more powerful tractor for seasonal work.”

Hiring is an economical way of getting a modern, up-to-date tractor, he points out. There is no big capital outlay and routine servicing and repair costs are included in the rental charge, which qual-ifies as a business expense.

The hire season gets underway in March when potato growers need extra tractors for field preparation and planting, and continues with first-cut silage. It then picks up again when the pea harvest is imminent and plenty of tractors and trail-ers are needed to ferry the crop into freez-ing plants.

“But our busiest period is from July to November when farmers and contractors need extra units for harvesting grain, rapeseed and potatoes, and more power

Hire firm Hawk orders McCormick six-cylinder tractors for 2012 fleetHawk buys McCormick MTX and XTX XtraSpeed tractors for rental fleet. Available for short-term or seasonal farm hire anywhere in Great Britain. Local dealers and Hawk technicians provide service and repairs back-up.

The McCormick XTX185 XtraSpeed tractors being run by Hawk in its rental fleet has 171hp available for draft work and up to 183hp for pto and transport operations, plus a 50kph transmission with cab and independent front axle suspension.

for cultivations and sowing,” Mr Smith points out.

The McCormick additions to Hawk’s 2012 fleet comprise ten each of the 141hp MTX150 and 171/183hp XTX185 XtraSpeed models.

The tractors are supplied through McCormick dealers who then provide local parts, service and repair back-up. For customers in areas lacking a McCormick dealer, Hawk’s own team of 15 regionally-based technicians provide this support.

“One question we’re always asked by potential hire customers is: ‘How good’s your service?’ which really comes down to the dealer involved,” says John Smith. “In our experience, the McCormick deal-ers who work with us have always pro-vided good back-up, treating the tractor and customer as one of their own.”

As for the tractors themselves, Mr Smith says he is pleased to have McCormick machines in the fleet to maintain a long association with the make and intends adding more in the coming years.

“A lot of our regular customers specifi-cally ask for McCormick tractors because they know they’ll get a machine that per-forms as well as anything else in the field and has easily recognisable, intuitive con-

trols,” he points out. “That makes it easy for drivers to familiarise themselves with the machines and get the best out of them from the start.”

The McCormick MTX150, with its 16x12, four-speed powershift transmission, load-sensing hydraulics and 6600kg lift offers a ‘no frills’ six-cylinder option for general field and trailer work. The XTX185 is a higher productivity package that comes with boost power up to 183hp for pto and transport work, a 50kph 32x24 transmission with eight powershift speeds, and 8000kg rear linkage.

McCormick’s popular cab and front axle suspension are also part of Hawk’s XTX185 specification and drivers of both models get to work in a spacious four-post cabin with first-rate all-round visibility.

For the first time this year, farmers can also rent a Leica GPS guidance system to operate their McCormick tractor with greater bout-matching accuracy for increased productivity and input savings.

The all-new Isuzu D-Max is powered by a highly fuel efficient 2.5-litre twin-turbo common rail diesel engine, available with newly-developed six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions. This advanced Euro5-compliant unit gener-ates 163 PS and peak torque output of 400 Nm at 1400 rpm. Isuzu UK expects its all-new pick-up to build on the remarkable success of its predecessor, the Rodeo. William Brown, General Manager of Isuzu UK, said: “The tough new Isuzu D-Max is a significant step forward from its very successful predecessor. Every model is well-equipped and yet offers unbeata-
