New research predicts that global food production is set to take a hit in the coming

decades, as rising greenhouse gas emissions drive changes in rainfall patterns, river

flows and temperature. Food production is expected to fall 0.5% by end of this decade, and another 2.3% by 2050. In tandem with failing food production, costs of food staples

such as grains are predicted to increase by 40%, whereas fruits and vegetables are

predicted to rise by 30% in the coming years.

Australian research agency CSIRO has successfully developed a game-changing prawn

feed additive, NOVACQ, which has the potential to grow farmed prawns 30% fasterwithout the use of fish products. The technology, based on marine micro-organisms, is

currently licensed to Melbourne-based Ridley AgriProducts, and will soon be avaiable to

prawn farmers in Australia and Southeast Asia.

The United States Department of Commerce has decided to impose Countervailing Duty

on frozen prawns from Malaysia. Under the structure, Malaysian frozen shrimpscompanies that failed to comply with investigations will be charged 54.5% duty, whereas

Asia Aquaculture (M) Sdn Bhd has to pay 10.8% duty due to its cooperation with the US

authorities. An action committee has been set up jointly chaired by MOA and MITI.

Terengganu Agriculture Department has invested RM1.2 million to plant MATAG and

MAWA coconuts to overcome the problem of coconut shortage in the state. The districtof Setiu has been picked for MATAG coconuts, where 175 hectares has been selected for

near-term planting. At present, 30 hectares planted three years ago has already begun

production, and has already yielded 534,000 coconuts thus far. With an average yield of

120 coconuts per month, and farm-gate prices of RM1.50-RM1.80 per nut, the MATAG

coconut represents a lucrative agribusiness venture. The department aims to plant the

crop in three districts, eventually covering 665 hectares to meet demand.

The introduction of new Aerob Padi (MRIA 1) which uses less water and can be planted

on hilly terrains is expected to help boost national padi production. The new variety

developed by MARDI is in line with the Agriculture Ministry s aspiration of turning100,000 hectares of idle land into farming areas. The new variety is noted for resilience

to diseases, and has a short planting period of only 90 days, allowing the strain to be

planted 3 times a year with an output of 3.5-4.0 tons per hectare. According to the

ministry, MRIA 1 only costs RM2,600 to cultivate 1 hectare, compared to RM5,000 for

normal varieties. As such, 1,000 hectares are being designated for planting this new

    variety next year.

Currently, aquaculture is the fastest growing food production system in the world as fish

is the primary source of animal protein in all coastal areas. The global aquaculture

market size declined during the economic crises in 2008 and 2009. However, the global

market for aquaculture witnessed a positive trend with recovery in the worlds major

economies and subsequent increase in production levels. Asia-Pacific dominates the

global aquaculture market, and represents the fastest growing regional market, in

    particular China.
