SCC AGM was held on 27 September 2016, attended by more than 160 members, gathered at the banquet hall. This year, we extend a warm welcome to ME7 Timothy Yap Soon Haw as our new Club Captain; ME6 Jackson Ng as our new Vice-Captain and COL (Ret) Lee Boon Loi as the new Chairman of the Engagement Committee. We look forward to them leading the Club to higher levels of golfing experiences and services.

SCC Interport Games had been gaining popularity with our members, as we link up to our reciprocal clubs and organise social golf games with our overseas friends. Do consider joining future Interport golf tours and register early to avoid disappointment.

As we come to a close of 2016, we extend an invitation to you to join us for the President's Cup in November and the Christmas Cup in December.

Keep Swinging!

The year has swiftly passed us by, once again, and we are in the final quarter of 2016. It’s been a good year thus far; we had organised two successful Interport games, an annual Family Carnival and the Annual General Meeting. We’re gearing up for the final quarter of the year with several exciting activities lined up for you.

Interport GamesWe had our second and last interport game for the year at Kuala Lumpur, and registration for it was overwhelming! The slots were filled within just a couple of days. Over the five days, our members played at KRTU, KRP, Nilai Springs, Danau and Tiara Melaka courses. We also had the chance to interact with members of the other clubs over social games. Our members had a great time throughout the entire trip and we are definitely looking forward to more trips. If you are interested, remember to look out for the next one!

Family CarnivalWhat better way to celebrate the start of the September school holidays than to have fun at the Family Carnival? Families streamed into the Club on a cheery Saturday afternoon and were greeted by colorful sights and sounds. The young ones headed to activities like the single bungee, bouncy castle and carnival games, while the adults headed to the driving range for the golf club demonstration by Taylor Made. There were also activities like the yoga trial, face painting and manicure. I, particularly, enjoyed the ice cream and churros, and I am sure I was not alone! The

old school-flavored ice cream from the pushcart was so well-received that it was gone before we knew it. What a fun-filled day, indeed!

Annual General MeetingOur Annual General Meeting was held on 27 September 2016. More than 160 members gathered at the banquet hall for this annual event.

This year, we saw the reappointment of several EXCO members and the appointment of some new EXCO members. Among the new faces, we welcome ME7 Timothy Yap Soon Haw as our Club Captain, ME6 Jackson Ng as our Vice-Captain, and COL (Ret) Lee Boon Loi as the Chairman of the Engagement Committee. We look forward to their guidance and contributions as they bring our Club to greater heights of service. At this point, I would also like to extend the Club’s sincere appreciation to all who had served in the last term; they were ME7 Derric Low Bah Soon, ME7 Teh Chong Ann, COL (Ret) Alan Yeo Cheng Ann, Mr Yong Shao Chang, and ME6 Yeo Hock Heng Andrew.

Members were also updated on the achievements and works of the various committees. The AGM was followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner that was part-sponsored by our F&B vendor, Oceanspoon Dining.

Saturday Afternoon Corporate GamesWe’ve recently received some feedback asking why the Club has allowed corporate games to be

Hello Everyone,

organised and played on Saturday Afternoons. While Management has worked hard and has found some success in keeping costs low, there is only so much it can do to curb the expected increase in operating costs. To offset these costs, we will need to find ways to generate more income. The EXCO has studied the golf course utilization rates and determined that there is lower utilization on Saturday afternoons. With this in mind, the EXCO would continue to look at allowing corporate games to be played on some weekends, particularly on Saturday afternoons. By doing so, the Club hopes to bring in some revenue to offset its operational costs. The additional revenue would be used to benefit members.

Outstanding Staff AwardThe Outstanding Staff Award is a quarterly award that will be presented to staff who had provided good service to our members and guests. The nominees were taken from the compliments or feedback that we received through our feedback channels (yellow feedback form, website, whatsapp, etc). The winners of the Outstanding Staff Award were then selected by a Selection Panel comprising members of the Executive Committee and Sub-Committees.

For the quarter of July to September 2016, the winners of the Outstanding Staff Award are Receptionists V. Jayanthy and Siti Zuraihah Binte Omar; Golfing Assistant Mahmood Bin Ramli and Rogayah Binte Ismail; Marshal/Starter/Bag Steward Jalani Bin Jumaat; Starter Abdul Rahman Bin Said; Driving Range Attendant Toh Sway Boon and Male Changing Room Attendant Janardhanan Pillai Vijayan.

Congratulations to all of them! Thank you for all your nominations, compliments and feedback. Do continue to write in to us about any of our staff who has provided you with excellent services, who had delivered happiness to you, or who has gone beyond his/her call of duty to render assistance to you. This would certainly encourage our staff to provide even better services to you.

Upcoming EventsTo round up the year, we will be having several events. These include the President’s Cup, and the Chairman’s Cup/Christmas Golf. In addition, we will also be having the Junior Golf Day Camp. More details will be out in the coming month, and registration for the golf games will commence soon. Do look out for it!

ConclusionOn behalf of the Club, I would like to thank all of you for the wonderful support you have shown us throughout the year. The year would not have been so memorable, and the events we had organised would not have been so successful without each and every one of you. I look forward to more of your support for our future events. As we draw closer to the end of the year, I hope that you’ll continue spending time with your loved ones and have a great time at the Club. Let me wish everyone a Happy Deepavali and a Merry Christmas! Have a wonderful and enjoyable festive season ahead!

By ME7 Timothy Yap Soon HawCaptain’s Column

Fellow Sembawang Golfers,

On the 27th September, we successfully held our Annual General Meeting (AGM) to cap off another very positive year for the club. In addition, we saw the handing over of the reins from one Club Captain to another. I would first like to sincerely thank ME7 Derric Low for all that he has done for the Club in the last 5 years, overseeing the renovations of the back nine and the clubhouse, and bringing this “commando course” to become the 6th best golf course in Singapore. Anyone who knows Derric also knows of his tireless passion for the Club and the golfing scene in Singapore. Even with the new course complete, he continued to strive to make it even better. This was done through updates to tee box positions, sandcapping, planting more trees, improving the landscaping and building new buggy entry points. Our driving range was also renovated under his tenure. On the golf course, Derric led by example. Many of us had seen him take the effort to fill extra divots, repair more ball marks and rake the bunkers. Besides working on the golf course, he had also sought to build the golfing community in Sembawang. This was done through initiatives such as Seniors Day, exclusive Ladies Events and to mark

our Golden Jubilee, Pioneer Generation promotions for golf. Our competitive golf scene had also strengthened under his term, with heavy participation for our Monthly Medals and Club Championships. Interest in representing the club for the SGA Inter-Club League had also grown. In the midst of all these, Derric and his team had also succeeded in widening our overseas golf footprint by almost doubling the number of reciprocal affiliations. I would also like to thank the out-going vice-captain ME7 Teh Chong Ann. Chong Ann and Derric made a good team and led the Greens Committee capably to deliver all of these achievements.

The new Vice-Captain ME6 Jackson Ng and I have big shoes to fill. As a start, I would like to assure all members that we will do our utmost to carry on from where Derric and his team left off, and to ensure that the Greens Committee will not rest until we have a perfect golf course at Sembawang. To help us, we have retained some of the experienced deckhands to help steer this ship. Emily, our ever bubbly lady captain remains, as does her vice-captain Evelyn. ME4 Andrew Ho will continue as the Handicap Convenor.

The remaining members of the Greens Committee are all also old hands, although some will take on new responsibilities. ME6 Lee Sing Huei will assume the appointment of the Greens Convenor, taking over from ME6 Andrew Yeo who has asked to step down. Ralph Aeria has taken on the role of the Competitions Convenor from Yong Shao Chang, who will continue to serve in the Greens Committee as the manager of our league teams. The co-opted members of the Greens Committee, ME5 Heng Soo Yeow, ME5 David Bey, Goh Young Kwang and Ho Phui Ping, also continue to lend their experience in improving the golfing experience for all members. ME5 Wong Chong Wai will take a sabbatical for one year as he is attending a course overseas. I would like to take the opportunity to thank ME6 Andrew Yeo and Vincent Lee for their services rendered to the Greens Committee.

As this is my first GC Update, I think that it would be useful for me to introduce myself to those that may not know me. I started playing golf from the age of 11 and thus have more than 30 years of golfing experience. I will be the first to admit that this experience does not often translate to better scores on the golf course, but I hope to use this experience to make good decisions that will improve your golfing experience.

To this end, I would like to share that the foremost priority for me as Captain would be to continue to improve the golf course. In the coming months, my team and I will be focussing on improvements to the condition of the greens and bunkers as well as the buggy entry points on the fairways. In addition to the golf course, we will also want to place greater focus on developing our Youth Golfing programs, so that we can continue to attract families to come and fully experience our facilities. We held a very successful Junior Golf Camp last November and will look to build on that. Beyond these, we will also look at how we can continue to build the golfing community in Sembawang by attracting new members and improving the competitions scene. I will also put emphasis on continuing to engage the members of Sembawang Country Club. I hope to be able to meet as many of you as I can in the coming months to hear your views on the golf course and on how I can serve you better as your Captain.

five days. 2nd Day! Group photo at Danau Golf Club!

Our members took a trip to the capital and most populous city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, in July for the interport game. Over the 5 Days 4 Nights trip, new friendships and bonds were formed over golf games, laughter and good food. We played on five different golf courses – Nilai Springs, Danau Golf Club, KRTU, KRP, and a bonus golf course, Tiara Melaka. We felt particularly welcomed when members of KRTU welcomed us with a huge banner. The live band performance over dinner on one of the evenings was a highlight of our trip as we had so much fun. The times when we burst out into songs on bus rides was also very memorable and brought much joy to us. All in all, it was a great trip

and we’re definitely looking forward to the next year’s KL trip already!

SENIOR GOLF CUP (8 JULY 2016)

All laid out, ready to be served What a sumptuous spread!

Enjoying a good conversation over lunch.

About 80 of our seniors gathered on a Friday, all ready and excited to play for the Senior Golf Cup. Alas, it rained halfway through the game and eventually escalated to Cat 1, where we had no choice but to stop the game. However, determined to not let the weather be a wet blanket, we promptly headed to the Banquet Hall for lunch. The sumptuous lunch spread included a mix of cuisines like Yang Chow Fried Rice, Mutton Rendang and Roast Beef with Red Wine Sauce. Even though the game was abandoned due to inclement weather, we still had fun over lunch! We also had a lucky draw where the

winner walked away with a Muta putter! We look forward to the next Senior Golf Cup.

How To Hit A Flop ShotWorking on the coolest shot in golf.

By Dustin Johnson / Golf Digest

You can’t just roll out of a golf cart and hit a flop shot. This high-lofted pitch—where the ball goes straight up, hangs in the air and lands dead—requires a decent amount of practice and a whole lot of confidence. It’s one of the game’s ultimate risk-reward plays. Hit it well, and your playing partners will be shaking their heads as you tap in for par. Hit it poorly, and you’ll be scrambling to save double bogey. I flop it only when I have to, mostly when I’ve missed a green right next to the pin and any other type of shot won’t get the ball close. Think of it as an “in case of emergency, break glass” shot. Here’s what I’ve been working on to hit the flop great when I need it.

ADDRESS: Play the ball way forward to pre-set loft at impact.

SET UP WIDER AND MAKE A HEALTHY SWINGThe flop-shot setup (above) is part full swing, part short game. You’re going to take your most lofted wedge and add loft to the clubface with a few adjustments. But you’re also going to make a big swing, which needs to be supported by a wide stance.

Start by opening the face so it’s pointing skyward, then take your grip. Address the ball with your feet spread apart, which will help keep our lower body quiet during the swing to reduce the risk of a mishit. The wide stance also lowers the shaft so the grip is closer to the ground, adding more loft to the face. Ball position matters, too. Playing it forward, close to your front foot, will help the club swing into impact on a shallow angle, which is another way to help pop the ball up. (More on that later.)

Sembawang Country Club11

Golf Tips

Page 14: AGM 2016 KL Interport Family Carnival · beyond his/her call of duty to render assistance to you. This would certainly encourage our staff to provide even better services to you

No matter what kind of swing I’m making, I tend to bow my left wrist as I get to the top. It’s just the way I swing, and it makes it harder to keep the clubface open on shots like this. I wouldn’t recommend it for you. Instead, let your left wrist cup as you swing back. The toe of the club should be pointing downward at the top (below). And don’t be shy: Swing all the way back. If you shorten things up, you’ll make it harder to get the loft and spin you want.

BACKSWING: If the club’s toe points down here, the face is open.

SWING WITH SOFT ARMS TO A FULL FINISHThe flop shot is all about commitment. You’ve got to trust that this big swing you’re making is not going to send the ball 50 yards over the green. That can be a challenge because the flop is so different than a normal full swing. For example, the hands and arms control most of the action. As I mentioned earlier, the lower body stays quiet. If you try to help the ball into the air by coming out of your posture, it’s Skull City.

It’s also important to swing with light grip pressure and almost no tension in your forearms. And unlike most other shots, you don’t want your arms and hands to lag behind your body rotation through impact—that’s how you compress the ball and drive it forward. The flop technique is the opposite: You want your hands and arms to pass your body as the club skims along the ground and slides under the ball (below, left). The energy pushes upward, not forward.

The last thing to remember is, don’t quit on the shot. If you squeeze the handle too hard, the clubhead won’t release. Let the momentum of the swing carry the club through to a full finish (below, right). I regulate distance by varying my swing speed (faster for longer and higher shots), but the length of the swing really doesn’t change.

IMPACT: Keep the clubface pointing up, even after the strike.FINISH: Don’t cut off the follow-through. Let the swing run out.

All ready for a

round of golf!

More than 160 members gathered at the banquet hall as we awaited the start of the Annual General Meeting 2016. This was an annual event that was much-looked-forward-to by members as the Executive Committee (EXCO) would give updates and reports on the Club’s progress, financial standing as well as future plans. This year, we saw the reappointment of several EXCO members and the appointment of some new EXCO members. The AGM was followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner at the Golfers Terrace and by the pool. The live station with Laksa, Prawn Noodle, Satay Bee Hoon and Roasted Delights was so popular that queues were constantly snaking. Prior to the AGM, members also played in a golf game and the weather was

simply perfect. All in all, it was a wonderful day. Do join us at our next AGM!

STAFF DAY (10 AUGUST 2016)The SCC Annual Staff Day 2016 was held after the National Day holidays, and our staff were treated to a day of fun at the Universal Studios Singapore! We reached USS on a bright and cheery morning, all geared up to conquer the rides. Some of us challenged the Battlestar Galatica, some the Revenge of the Mummy ride, while some settled for the less heart-thumping rides like the Transformers and the Spaghetti Space Chase rides. After a couple of rides and exploring the place, we headed to Bali Thai at Resorts World Sentosa for lunch. Laid before us were Thai delicacies like Tom Yum Goong, Mango Salad and Thai fishcake. We were so stuffed after everything! We then had the long-awaited lucky draw. Our Female Changing Room attendant, Aunty Phua, walked away with the top prize – a

Bouquets:I had found Mr Abdul Rahman to be a diligent, patient and conscientious marshal. He explained well on the instructions for golfers and I see golfers enjoyed his good instructions. He is also very helpful. Looks like all golfers are so happy that we have such a good marshal. – Chew Kok Leong Rickie, 30 June

My four grandchildren participated in the Junior Swimming Meet and they told me that it was the most fun competition they have ever entered. My wife and myself totally agreed with them. The event was well organised not only for the swimmers who participated but also for the parents and spectators. The relay was exceptionally ingenious by grouping the swimmers of various swimming abilities. The event has effectively brought club members and their young children together to socialise and engage in club activities and I look forward to next year's swimming meet. I am quite sure most parents and kids will mark this event as another family outing for 2017 and more years to come.– Loy Khow Kin Nicholas, 1 July

On 23 Jul 16, my wife fainted beside the swimming pool during her golf lesson. I shouted for help and she was attended to by a lady member, whom I did not manage to get her name, and Mr Gan, who teaches swimming at the club. She was carried to an air-conditioned room to rest while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Mr Gan continued to attend to my wife until Ms Prema arrived. Ms Prema was extremely helpful and she stayed with us until the paramedics arrived and sent my wife to KTPH for further treatment. She even called me to find out the condition of my wife and helped to retrieve her golf apparels that was left behind during the incident. My wife and I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Gan, Ms Prema, the lady member and all who helped us on that day. Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts!– Guest, 25 July

Jay has been extremely helpful and pro active. She is polite, and was proactive in suggesting that I use my previous rain check to defray the green fees for my game today. If she didn't do that, I would have forgotten and I'm thankful and appreciative of her initiative. Her attitude and courtesy tell me that my interest and welfare is a greater concern than profits for the Club which is fantastic for customer service.– Tan Cheow Khai , 31 July

Please compliment Vijay for his attentiveness, resourcefulness and pro-active action. Two weeks ago, I handed in "my own" key instead of the locker key. Despite his busy day, he noticed my "error" and contacted the reception front desk to get in touch with me just before I drove off. Wonderful timing and saved me a lot of inconvenience. Thank you Vijay!– Mao Sin Hua Joe, 1 August

I wish to praise Othman for his hardwork, helpful & friendly disposition, his quick action in cleaning up the slimy mess left behind by a certain member and his son. Someone could have taken a fall and been hurt. The Club, indeed, has very good and passionate staff!– Ho Kun Kok Kevin, 20 August

I have been a member of SCC for more than 35 years. I have observed that the best marshaling is done by the Chief Marshal Mr Saran. He is not only pertinent in the job he went about, but he also shows courtesy and politeness in his approach. I find that most members have a good opinion of him. SCC is privilege to have such a person as staff of the Club.– Lee Yian Tong Peter, 12 September
