How can we thrive?• It is hard sometimes…

– to be in a team, to lead or to follow – to manage people and projects

• Other people are hard to understand– they seem to behave and think differently to us

• Sometimes – we feel treated badly– people get in our space and interfere– we feel rejected by others– we feel used – and helpless

what can we do about it?

Leadership case study: Mike

“…Mike … was low-rankingBy judicious use of (…noise directed…) toward his superiors, he bluffed his way to the alpha position…

For sometime after this Mike seemed unsure of himself and seized every opportunity to display vigorously as though to impress any males nearby;

often too he attacked females for no obvious reason as he was tense…”

Leaders, Managers, Followers:We are animals, often in teams

We work in teams. Teams that have goals, that work together to solve problems, that sometimes squabble and make up. How people in the group behave depends on the styles of leadership, management and followership adopted in the group, and on each of our individual behaviours.

Parasites and symbionts

• No Teamwork?

• No Leader?

• No Manager?

• No Followers?

• Uneasy alliances?

• Unconscious “cooperation”?
