5. Central Council Updates: Rose Aquino

The Central Council met twice in February. The January 28 meeting was rescheduled to February 1 due to weather. The regular scheduled meeting was on February 25.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has requested Central Council meeting times change to daytime working hours. There have been some discussions and concerns. A new hybrid timing was suggested where some meetings would be held from 4 to 6 and others 5 to 7 pm. The terms of reference will be affected if the proposed timing changes go forward.

Governance is busy working on the strategic plan. A meeting with key system partners (i.e., community partners who do not deliver settlement services but have a support role) was held on March 1st. It was a good discussion; partners will provide their feedback on the draft plan via email.

Middlesex Workplace Development Partnership and Western students in the Intercultural Communications e-learning course collaborated on a Middlesex Resident Attraction Project. Narratives, videos and pictures from Newcomers who have settled in Middlesex County or residents who have returned to Middlesex will be featured in an interactive “Story Map” or “FlipBook” titled “A Place We Call Home”. Launch date of the FlipBook is not yet known.

Pathways to Prosperity is busy with a few projects: Literature review which is an analysis of tax file data to look at retention rates; community consultation looking at attitudes and perceptions; six videos being made for a project called “Promising Practices”; Metropolis conference in June in Ottawa, and P2P conference coming up in October (location to be decided).

6. System Partners’ Meeting: Huda Hussein/Polina Shadman

- The System Partners’ meeting was held as a breakfast meeting on March 1. - It was well attended with a good representation of partners - Great engagement and good questions asked - Next time the system partners meeting could be moved up ahead of the strategic

process rather than closer to the end to allow earlier input from system partners

7. ICE Sub Council 2018-2019 Implementation Plan Updates and Planning:

Leadership Inventory: Jutta Zeller-Beier

- Request for contact information for the leadership inventory has been sent out - Once the inventory has been created into a shareable format it will be ready for

sharing and uploading to the portal.

Acts of Welcome: Polina Shadman

- The goal for Acts of Welcome is to reach at least 1,000 acts. The count is currently at 850.

- Members were asked for ideas and suggestions on how to reach the goal - It was suggested that to have it circulated, so that all can share the website

within their networks. - Polina will share the Acts of Welcome website link; and continue posting on

social media where everyone can like/comment/share to increase awareness. - Group was asked to think about any acts of welcome they have experienced

and to submit to be counted and uploaded

8. Strategic Planning 2019-2022: Final review

As the strategic plans were presented at the previous Central Council meeting, there were some good discussions and feedback.

It was suggested that initiatives should be measurable and have actionable outcomes.

There were some modifications to wording for example ‘host community’ will be changed to ‘receiving community’ throughout the Plan.

The draft will be circulated again for further feedback and finalized for the next Central Council meeting.

- Over 4,800 volunteer hours were contributed which translates to $282,422 if monetized

- In addition to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada‘s generous support, LMLIP received $29,000 funding support from partner organizations mainly used for the ‘All Are Welcome Here’ event.

- The City of London as part of its Newcomer Strategy is planning a Newcomer Day on October 10 and the LMLIP was asked to collaborate in celebrating its 10th anniversary.

- Middlesex County is actively working to attract newcomers to the county through an interactive flipbook called The Place We Call Home and a new newcomers page on the county’s website with links to settlement services

- The Francophone Local immigration committees (FLIC) are finalizing their local action plans. London FLIC is currently planning celebration activities for National Francophone Immigration Week, which will have a movie screening at the Library sometime during November 3-9. - The Welcoming Communities work group is looking for new ideas on how to get Acts of Welcome up to hit the goal of 1000 and is asking everyone to submit an act and to share/spread the #1000actsofwelcome. ICE Sub-council suggested that perhaps the 1000actsofwelcome be revisited regarding the manner in which acts are requested. Why is it so challenging to get to 1000 acts? Some people may find it feels like boasting to talk about their deeds of welcome. Are there other ways to record or elicit acts? Maybe have a checklist? It will be brought to Central Council for consideration
