Explore historical Dresden, which is a relatively” new” Slavic settlement since the late 12th century, whereas the area has been settled in the Neolithic era by Linear Pottery culture tribes around 7,500 B.C.

Included in this tour will be a visit of the Dresden Frauenkirche (Dresdner Frauenkirche, literally Church of Our Lady, which is a Lutheran Church.Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed in the firebombing of Dresden during World War II. It has been reconstructed as a landmark symbol of reconciliation between former warring enemies. The reconstruction of its exterior was completed in 2004, its interior in 2005 and, after 13 years of rebuilding, the church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005.Once a month, an Anglican Evensong in English is held in the Church of Our Lady, with clergy sent from St. George's Anglican Chaplaincy in Berlin.

Furthermore you will visit TheGrünes Gewölbe(Green Vault) which is a museum that contains the largest collection of treasures in Europe. It is a part of Dresden castle. It was founded in 1723.It features a unique and rich variety of exhibits from the period of baroque to classicism. The name comes from the malachite green painted columns of the "Pretiosensaal" although these are currently covered in mirrors. It has been completely reconstructed and was reopened on 1 September 2006. It is often referred to as a walk-in treasure chest. It contains nine rooms, each with its own exhibition theme.The crown jewels used by the Saxonkings of Poland and some reminders of thePolish monarchs, like a 14th century cup of Queen Jadwiga of Poland, illegally appropriated by Frederick August I, Elector of Saxony are also displayed in the Grünes Gewölbe.During World War II three of the nine rooms were damaged by bombs, but the treasure itself was kept safely at the Festung Königstein. The Soviet army seized the treasures in 1945, but gave them back in 1958 to the German Democratic Republic (Communistic East Germany).In 2009 President Barack Obama was received within by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Seminar VIII: A strong minority and its independence in a German majority province: The case of the Sorbs

Domowina is a political independent league of the Sorbian and Wendish people and umbrella organization of Sorbian societies in Lower and Upper Lusatia, Germany. It represents the interests of Sorbian people and is the continual successor of the previous Domowina League of the Lusatian Sorbs.

Sorbs (Upper Sorbian: Serbja; Lower Sorbian: Serby also known as Wends, Lusatian Sorbs or Lusatian Serbs) are a Western Slavic people of Central Europe living predominantly in Lusatia, a region on the territory of Germany and Poland. In Germany they live in the states of Brandenburg and Saxony. They speak the Sorbian languages (Wendish, Lusatian), closely related to Polish, Kashubian, Czech and Slovak and officially recognized and protected as minority languages of Germany, but due to Germanization only the older generation in Lower Sorbia speak the language at home. Their religions are predominantly Catholicism and Lutheranism.

Sorbs are divided into two geographical groups:

* Upper Sorbs, who speak Upper Sorbian (about 40,000 people). * Lower Sorbs, who speak Lower Sorbian (about 20,000 people)

The Muskau Park (German Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau, in Polish “ Park Mużakowski”), is the largest and one of the most famous English gardens of Germany and Poland.

It covers 3.5 square kilometers (1.4 sq mi) of land in Poland and 2.1 km2 (0.81 sq mi) in Germany. The park extends on both sides of the Neisse rive, which constitutes the border between the countries. The 17.9 km2 (6.9 sq mi) zone around the park encompassed the German town Bad Muskau (Upper Sorbian: Mužakow) in the West and Polish  Łęknica (Wjeska, former Lugknitz) in the East. While Muskau Castle is situated west of the river, the heart of the park ishe partially wooded raised areas on the east bank called The Park on Terraces. In 2003 a pedestrian bridge spanning the Neisse was rebuilt to connect both parts.On July 2, 2004, UNESCO added the park to its World Heritage List, as an example of cross-border cultural collaboration between Poland and Germany. It was added to the list on two criteria: for breaking new ground in terms of development towards the ideal man-made landscape, and for its influence on the development of landscape architecture as a discipline.

By 929 King Henry I of Germany had finally subdued the Slavic Glomacze tribe and a fortress built within their settlement area, situated on a rock high above the Elbe river. This castle called Misnia after a nearby creek became the nucleus of the town and from 965 on the residence of the Margraves of Meissen, who in 1423 acquired the Electorate of Saxony.

Meissen porcelain or Meissen china is the first European hard-paste porcelain that was developed from 1708 by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. The production of porcelain at Meissen, near Dresden, started in 1710 and attracted artists and artisans to establish one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers, still in business today as Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH. Its signature logo, the crossed swords, was introduced in 1720 to protect its production; the mark of the crossed swords is one of the oldest trademarks in existence. It dominated the style of European porcelain until 1756.

Carnival has been celebrated in the City of Cologne since time immemorial. After the French Revolutionary troops left Cologne in 1814, however, and the Prussians took over ,the citizens felt it was high time to "organise" the street carnival which, the new authority felt, was getting out of hand.Thus, in 1823 the "Festordnendes Komitee" was founded, the predecessor of todays Festival Committee.On February 10, 1823 Cologne celebrated the first Rose Monday ("Rosenmontag") with the motto "Inthronisation of the Carnival Hero".Over the years, decades and centuries certain traditions and customs emerged, which are still the hallmark of the traditional Cologne Carnival.Given its Christian roots, the date of Rose Monday is determined by the Church calendar: It takes place on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, which in turn marks the beginning of Lent leading up to Good Friday and Easter. Traditionally, the fifth season is declared open at 11 minutes past eleven on the eleventh of November! The Carnival spirit is then temporarily suspended by the Advent and Christmas period, and picks up again "in earnest" in the New Year. Street carnival, also called "the crazy days", takes places between Thursday (Women’s Carnival Day) before Rose Monday and ends on Ash Wednesday.

Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria, English: High Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Mary) is a Roman Catholic Church in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, and is under the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is renowned as a monument of Christianity, of German Catholicism in particular, of Gothic architecture and of the continuing faith and perseverance of the people of the city in which it stands. It is dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary.The cathedral is a World Heritage Site, one of the best-known architectural monuments in Germany, and Cologne's most famous landmark, described by UNESCO as an "exceptional work of human creative genius". It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day.Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, until 1880 to complete. It is 144.5 metres long, 86.5 m wide and its towers are approximately 157 m tall. The cathedral is one of the world's largest churches and the

largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. For four years, 1880-84, it was the tallest structure in the world, until the completion of the Washington Monument. It has the second-tallest church spires, only surpassed by the single spire of Ulm Minster, completed 10 years later in 1890. Because of its enormous twin spires, it also presents the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir of the cathedral, measured between the piers, also holds the distinction of having the largest height to width ratio of any Medieval church, 3.6:1, exceeding even Beauvais Cathedral which has a slightly higher vault.
