STUDENT AND STAFF RECOGNITION 1. Student Recognition
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Gresch Jensen, a fifth grader at Arthur Jacobsen Elementary School, for being an outstanding student. Gresch Jensen is every teacher’s dream student. He comes to school every day, on time, ready to learn with a smile on his face. When Gresch is handed a math or reading test, a sincere “thank you” always follows. If he gets an answer wrong, he wants to know how to do it right and then again offers a genuine “thank you” for helping him to understand. Gresch is an A student who has met all of the WASL standards so far. Gresch also plays the sax in Rainier Middle School’s band program and is the starting quarterback for the Kent Knights and plays catcher and first base for Auburn’s Little League. All that and his homework is never late. Gresch was recently awarded the 2008 Ryan Brunner Sportsmanship Scholarship for his outstanding athletic, scholastic, and personal achievement. Gresch is AJ’s best citizen. He was overwhelmingly elected to be his class’s representative for the upcoming year. He was AJ’s vice president last year and has been the acting president this year, which means he leads the flag salute for the entire student body every morning. He is an Early Childhood Education gym assistant, helping the three and four year olds with their gross motor skills. He is also a kindergarten bus helper, safely navigating the students to the bus every day. If you log onto AJ’s website, you will hear Gresch co-podcasting the school news for September—a future career perhaps. Gresch is every neighborhood’s favorite neighbor. Gresch and his buddies go around the neighborhood each fall offering to rake up leaves for free. When he walks his dog, Lambo, he takes along supplies to clean up after the dog. Gresch is everybody’s best friend, especially Barry Bains. According to Barry, Gresch is kind; he always includes him in whatever game that he is playing. Barry and Gresch share the same favorite color, green, and their favorite football player is Brett Favre. No wonder Barry has offered to be Gresch’s campaign manager this year.
2. Staff Recognition
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Heidi Erdmann, school counselor at Terminal Park Elementary School and Auburn High School, for her outstanding service. Heidi Erdmann’s connection with her high school counselor as a teen led her into the profession. Now, 23 years later, Heidi continues to passionately help children develop socially and emotionally so they can excel academically. Working part time at Terminal Park Elementary School and part time at Auburn High School as a school counselor, Heidi devotes her time and attention to a diverse group of students.
October 27, 2008 Page 2
Despite the age range and different types of problems between elementary and high school students, Heidi finds that kids are still kids and her main avenue to help them succeed in school is through developing trust and repertoire with the students. Heidi’s goal is to meet students where they are at, which means she may work with students individually, in small groups or in a larger classroom setting. Her flexible style allows her to adapt to changing needs, especially among at-risk students. For example, at the elementary school, Heidi uses sand tray counseling to encourage students to share their feelings by interacting with a miniature sandbox. Heidi is most proud of the moments when students return to share with her how much of an impact she made in their lives. At Auburn High, Heidi provides an opportunity for students in her small groups to share their thoughts about the group. Overwhelmingly, students respond with comments like: “I really don’t know where I would be right now if I couldn’t have been able to come to groups…I most likely would’ve dropped out by now.” Heidi is a 17-year veteran of Auburn School District. She is an avid lifelong learner and annually presents on small group counseling at the University of Puget Sound’s counselor education workshop. Heidi attended Luther College in Iowa and received her bachelors in psychology, followed by a masters in counseling at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. A photo of Heidi’s 12-year-old Maltese is readily available for viewing in her office. She lives in Tacoma with her partner of 25 years and is an avid outdoorsperson. She enjoys tending to her vegetable garden, traveling—up next: Africa and South America—and helping others as a certified spiritual director.
