ABOUT DUBAI

The Emirate of Dubai is the second largest of the seven United Arab Emirates but has the biggest population at over 2.1 million inhabitants. Size has been synonymous with Dubai as it continues to build the first, largest and the biggest constructions in the world.

Dubai’s dynamics are always transient and ever-changing with its constant urge to construct something better and bigger than the previous. If there was a Palm Island, Nakheel thought of the World Island. Burj Al Arab seemed too timid when Burj Khalifa cropped up, distancing itself to being a loner in the crowd. Dubai constantly dwells in a suppressive competition with itself trying to magnetize tourists to a dreamy world of attractions and unheard of luxuries. The emirate›s scoring points lie in its entrepreneurial abilities to create the inconceivable found in its tourist attractions, landmarks, shopping

centres, nightlife and hotels. Although it strictly safeguards its traditional practices, it allows space for other religions to breathe, a rare quality amongst the conservative Arab world. Thankfully, it has been successful in shielding itself from extremism, much-needed for it to survive. Today, Dubai has emerged as a cosmopolitan metropolis that has grown steadily to become a global city and a business and cultural hub of the Middle East and the Arab Gulf region.

ASIM KURJAK, professor emeritus, School of Medicine University of Zagreb, specialist in obstetrics and gynecology.

Born in 1942 in Vranić, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Graduated at School of Medicine University of Zagreb (1966), M.Sc. (1972) and Ph.D. (1977). From 1985-2002 Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sveti Duh General Hospital.

Scientific interest: ultrasound and perinatal medicine. Principal investigator in several scientific projects, mentored 52 M.Sc. theses and 52 Ph.D. theses. Published more than 400 peer review articles, wrote or edited 111 books. His papers have been cited more than 5.390 times in Science Citation Index.

Awarded: National Prize for Young Scientists (1971); “Rudjer Boskovic” for scientific work (1985); CASA: “Josip Juraj Strossmayer” for the scientific book (1990) and for the achievements in medical science (1994); “Europski krug” etc. Presidential decoration “The Order of the Croatian Starr with the Effigy of Rudjer Boskovic” (2001); “Pavao Čulumović” Prize of CMA (2003); Erich Saling Perinatal Prize (2011); Lifetime Achievement Award from International Academy of Perinatal Medicine (2015). Professor Mohamed Aboulghar received his medical education in Cairo University and got his MBBCH in 1962. Shortly afterwards, he received his Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1965, then his Diploma on General Surgery in 1966 and finally his Doctorate degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1969 all from Cairo University. He did post graduate training in Denmark, Sweden and the United States.

He has been Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, since 1979 up till today. He is the founder and Clinical Director of the Egyptian IVF Center. It is the first center in Egypt dedicated to treating patients as well as providing high quality research in human reproduction and genetics and training programs for candidates from all over the Middle East on techniques of Assisted Reproduction.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aboulghar has been involved in numerous scientific activities worldwide. He participated in dozens of scientific conferences, and he published more than 150 scientific papers in top international journals. He participated in the writing of many international scientific books on infertility, and together with his team in the Egyptian IVF center he participated in many multicenter international studies.

He founded (and became the first president of) the Middle East Fertility Society (MEFS), which is the first and largest society in the Middle East in the field of reproduction. He is also the Editor-in-Chief and founder of the: Middle East Fertility Society Journal (since 1996). He is a member of numerous scientific committees of different international and regional societies all over the world (eg. ESHRE, ASRM, FIGO, IFFS, Endometriosis Society, ….etc), as well as editorial boards of many important scientific journals specialized in fertility and reproduction including Fertility and Sterility, which is the world’s top journal in its field. He has also been a reviewer for several international journals in the field, including Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, Human Reproduction Update and Reproductive Biomedicine Online.

Dr. Aboulghar received the Egyptian National Award for Scientific Excellence in 1999. He also received the Honorary membership of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in 2004 and Honorary membership of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS) in 2000.

Dr. Luciano NardoMD MRCOG

Luciano trained in Italy, London and Manchester before being appointed as consultant in gynaecology and reproductive medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, where he worked full time until 2011.

In July 2017 he was appointed as Visiting Professor to both Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and the University of Catania’s Masters Programme in Biology and Biotechnology of Reproduction, in recognition of his long term commitment to research and teaching alongside his clinical career.

Luciano’s clinical and academic interests are in infertility, assisted conception, gynaecological endocrinology, pelvic pain, menstrual disorders and hysteroscopic management of uterine abnormalities. He has expertise in gynaecological ultrasound scan and management of early pregnancy problems including recurrent miscarriage. He has vast experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of endometriosis, adhesions, fibroids, ovarian cysts, tubal surgery and other benign gynaecological conditions, and regularly performs complex laparoscopic procedures such as hysterectomy, myomectomy and reversal of sterilisation as day case procedures.

Luciano is a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and an associate member of many other learned societies including the British Fertility Society (BFS), European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy. He is a preceptor for the BFS special skills modules in Pelvic Ultrasound, Management of the Infertile Couple, Assisted Conception, Embryo Transfer/IUI, Male Fertility and Quality Management of a Fertility Service.

He has published in excess of 95 papers on many aspects of gynaecology, reproductive medicine and surgery, is a member of the editorial board of Reproductive BioMedicine Online and is regularly an invited speaker at national and international conferences.

Dr. Marco Gambacciani

Until 1986 he worked at the Reproductive Endocrinology Department of the University of California, San Diego, where he specialized in Endocrinology of Reproduction.

He is responsible for the Menopause Center, which over the years has become a reference point in the national and international landscape.

Dr Gambacciani has developed vaginal surgery in addition to laparoscopic mini resuscitation and resetoscopic surgery for mini invasive interventions.

Dr. Gambacciani has visited important gynecological surgery centers for the refinement of the most modern surgical techniques.

Thanks to the innovations introduced, it has made it possible to implement new welfare protocols that involve the execution of most of the surgical procedures under Day Hospital, Day Surgery and Week Surgery.

Knowledge derived from scientific studies and the guidelines of international societies must be taken into account in order to be able to adapt to the needs, preferences and choices of every single woman.

It is necessary to abandon rigid schemas that may only be an obstacle to achieving the goals of health and well-being.

Dr. Braulio Peramo, an Obstetrician, Gynecologist and IVF physician, is the Medical Director and the General Manager of the Al Ain Fertility Center (AAFC). Dr. Peramo has been internationally practicing in the field of reproductive medicine, specializing in Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ARTs), gynecology and andrology for almost two decades in the USA, UK, mainland Europe and UAE.

In 2004, Dr. Peramo was awarded a Masters in Reproductive Medicine from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and in 2007, he attended advanced workshops on IVF and infertility in the New York University, USA. In January 2008, he received the European Diploma of Gynecological Endoscopy from the University of Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

His expertise and research in the field of reproductive medicine has contributed in the development of infertility treatments and optimization of a number of ART protocols. Dr. Peramo has produced over 100 publications in short communications, full-length research papers, abstracts, posters and book chapters. His work in standardizing assisted reproduction aspects, from ovarian stimulation to the successful management of difficult andrology cases, has been internationally recognized.

Dr. Mohamed Momtaz is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2000 and founded the Fetal Medicine Unit at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kasr Al Aini Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University and was appointed Director of the unit from 2008 - 2011.

He graduated from Kasr Al Aini Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University in 1981. He finished his residency program in the same hospital in 1986. He got his Master degree in 1985 and his M.D. degree in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1990. He was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2000. He received specialty training in Royal Free University Hospital in London, UK, Ultrasound Institute in Zagreb, Croatia and Thomas Jefferson School of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA.

His academic leadership and contributions to research, has awarded him national and international recognition in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, particularly in the area of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology. His contributions have organized the teaching and education of many physicians. Dr. Momtaz notoriety in 3D/4D ultrasound evolved as a result of his authorship or co-authorship of over 50 publications in national and internationally circulated publications.

He is the president of the Middle East Society of 3D/4D Ultrasound, president of the Pan Arab Fetal Medicine Group (PAFMG) and vice president of the Mediterranean Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MEDUOG). She is an RCOG accredited subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and completed her training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London. Dr Sunkara has a Research Doctorate; Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Reproductive Medicine from King’s College London, UK following her work on “poor ovarian response” which led to her thesis entitled “Interventions for poor responders undergoing in vitro fertilisation treatment”. After her Subspecialist training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, she joined the Aberdeen Fertility Centre, Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, and University of Aberdeen as a consultant. Focusing on Laparoscopic surgery since the early 90’s, Dr. Hafeez Rahman is a global pioneer and authority in this field. Most of the techniques he has developed over the years are followed the world over.

Course Purpose

To increase cognitive knowledge regarding the diagnosis and management of obstetrical emergencies.

To increase hands-on skill needed to manage the care of patients during obstetrical emergencies.

To improve collegial interactions and coordination of care among types of maternity care providers.

ALSO, is a structured, evidenced-based, multidisciplinary training program on the practical management of obstetric emergencies. The three-day course is for maternity care providers including physicians, midwives, nurses and other clinicians. Maternity care providers can earn ALSO Status upon completing an ALSO Course, verifying their advanced training in obstetrics. ALSO Course sponsors will get CME credit for their course, providing additional value to those who attend.
