• Many newspapers and daily journals are available on Westlaw and Lexis.• Westlaw: New York Times, Washington Post, Star Tribune,
Pioneer Press
• Lexis: Wall Street Journal, New York Law Journal
• When an article cites a newspaper/journal article to a website, always check to see if it’s on a database.
• Select the source in the database and search for the article title.
Newspaper Articles Continued!
• If already citing to the paper source, simply append the database identifier:• Edward Wyatt, On a New Jersey Islet, Twilight of the Landline, N.Y. TIMES, Oct.
15, 2013, at B1.

Legislative Materials
Any legislative material available in the library should be cited to paper
• United States Statutes at Large• Journals of the U.S. House/Senate• Minnesota Session Laws
Do NOT add footnotes• Don’t. Just do not. Again, please don’t. Wait! Yes, do not do it.• Ever.• Instead leave a comment with a suggestion like the following
example:• Josh Peterson:• Comment: This sentence could be bolstered with a citation. I
would suggest—Clark v. Kent, 101 U.S. 202, 220 (1927).
Make Bluebook Changes!!!!• When a change is supported by the Bluebook, just make the
change. The editor can choose to accept or reject—that’s much easier than reading a comment and then applying the rule.
Order of Authorities• Books and journals are ordered alphabetically by the author’s
last name, NOT by date.• See BB Rule 1.4(i).
• Cases: Subsequent and prior histories are irrelevant to the order of authorities, as is whether the opinion is published or unpublished.• See BB Rule 1.4(d).
Id. and Statutes• 24 Minn. Stat. § 609.101 (2012).
25 Minn. Stat. § 609.102 (2012).• How do we short cite footnote 25?
• 24 Minn. Stat. § 609.101 (2012).25 Id. § 609.102.

Super Staffers!Ann Weber• Ann received THREE nominations!• “I nominate Ann Weber. I just had her complete two ACs and she recommended a number of good
citations to add in both.”• “Ann obviously spent a great deal of time reviewing the sources cited in her range. She provided
detailed comments and suggested revisions, as well as noting where sources did not support the author's statement, and suggesting appropriate alternatives. She also did great work with her short citations, and suggested appropriate and helpful short cites for sources that were repeated outside of her range. Great work!”
• “I want to nominate Ann Weber for next month's super staffer line up. Ann obviously spent a great deal of time reviewing the sources cited in her range. She provided detailed comments and suggested revisions, as well as noting where sources did not support the author's statement, and suggesting appropriate alternatives. She also did great work with her short citations, and suggested appropriate and helpful short cites for sources that were repeated outside of her range. Great work!
Rachel Mowry• “Rachel poured substantial effort into Proof 2 of the Garcia article. She did an excellent job
standardizing citation formats for some tough sources, and supplying appropriate hereinafter citations to condense unwieldy footnotes. The article is in much better shape after her hard work.”
Super Staffers!
Lisa Colburn• “I nominate Lisa Colburn for her source pull on the Bibelhausen article. Lisa scheduled a meeting
with me to figure out how to deal with difficult sources. Additionally, Lisa downloaded many sources and converted them into PDFs so I could put them into the Staff Folder to allow easier access for ACers. Finally, Lisa turned in the source pull early.”
Scott Jurchisin• “His grade sheet reflects consistent quality-level work. In addition, he went above and beyond with
Miller AC1. This included locating a number of sources (online and via ILL) and suggesting specific citations to insert. He thoroughly responded to my questions with AC2 and provided detailed explanations for his suggested course of action when it was in conflict with AC1.”
Michael Sheran• “Michael went above & beyond for AC1 of the Garcia article. He tracked down a source that was
pending ILL at the U of M library so that he could check & cite the assertion appropriately. He found supporting case law for some assertions in the text that were not already marked for citations.”
