Focusing on Summer Summer is almost here! Along with summer comes long hot days and children out of school on summer

vacation. During school months — the children living in homes with food insecurity are guaranteed a hot

breakfast and lunch. During summer months it can be a time of insecurity, wondering where their meals

will come from.

There is a moving trend with some of the agencies of the Food Bank to step up and help these families

during this tough time. If your agency is looking to expand your program this would be a great way to

help during the summer.

Sponsor events geared toward feeding children. Perhaps consider conducting summer camps so that

needy children can come and eat while there. Structured activities along with food will go along way to

help these children know that there is hope of better days.

There is still time to set up a program for the summer for the kids in your area. Here are some ideas to

get you started to get a program at your church or organization:

• Set a time frame. Decide how many weeks, and what days you would like to serve children in your

community.

• Think of the children you would like to target. Perhaps have your church or organization pick them up

for the program.

• If at least 51% of the children who attend your summer feeding program fit the income guidelines for

food assistance, you can serve all children who attend.

• Shop the Food Bank as often as you can before you start the program to acquire enough food to start

the program and keep it sustained. Then continue to shop as the program is running to stay stocked.

• Keep an eye out at each visit for items that will fit your program. Acquire items that can be frozen.

Stock up to keep the program going during your specified time frame.

• Be sure to get a menu form from the Food Bank to record the food you provide in this program.

USDA, Feeding America, and MAFB are equal opportunity providers, employers, and lenders.
