Section 1 Introduction

1.1 Product Overview

SMS alert gateway is designed as a cost effective remote system alert device which is capable of

monitoring up to 8 dry contacts and 4 relay outputs. User-defined SMS will be sent out to the designated

hand phone numbers when alarm condition happens. These pre-configured hand phone users can be any

technicians or engineers who are responsible in handling the corresponding alarm. With the aid of this

gateway, the alarm conditions will alert the responsible personnel immediately. Besides this, it allows

the hand phone users to trigger any relay output by using SMS. These relay output can be connected to

any alarm indication device, such as an alarm siren. When the unit undergoes a power reset or internal

reset, all 4 output relay will be set back to de-energize state.

There is a built-in microprocessor chip which is running on a real-time operating system. It takes

immediate response to any changes in both the inputs and outputs condition. A GSM modem is also embedded in the gateway. User has to subscribe a SIM card for the gateway. The gateway can be

installed in any location under GSM coverage.

A web-base configuration is embedded in the gateway. Alert settings, such as hand phone numbers,

alert SMS message, and alarm condition can be configured through the webpage. The webpage utilizes

Ethernet connection therefore user can configure the gateway through any computer connected within

the LAN. Details on the function and operation conditions will be covered in the following sections

below.

Functions highlight:

1. To monitor 8 dry contacts and trigger 4 relay outputs, a total of 12 alarm points available;

2. User-defined alarm condition (normally close or open), alarm and recovery SMS message for each

point;

3. Maximum of 10 hand phone numbers can be assigned for each point;

4. Flexible grouping of alarming level (first, second and subsequent group of hand phone number to

be notified once alarm happens) with adjustable interval delay;

5. 1 optional reminder of alarm SMS applies for all alarming level under each point;

6. User-friendly SMS service, such as requesting current status, acknowledging alarm condition of

any points and triggering relay outputs;

7. User-defined name is assigned for each point so as to implement functions in (6);

8. Administrative right can be assigned for a particular group of hand phone users. It includes remote

adding, deleting, and exchanging of hand phone numbers, activating alarming of particular point;

9. Configuration can be done remotely through LAN connection.

10. Option to extend the IO points up to 24IN and 12DO with the use of AG1000-10.

11. Web logging, keeping records of up to 200 logs.

12. When alarm on, able to send SMS message to 2nd AG100-01 to trigger a relay output.

Section 2 Hardware Reference

2.1 Connector Description

The figure below shows the front view of SMS alert gateway. All the items are marked with a unique

number followed by further description below.

(1) Antenna

The antenna detects GSM signal for internal modem. Antenna should be tighten by turning the

bottom part marked (1b), instate of the antenna stick which is marked (1a) in the above figure.

(2) IO Connector

The connector consists of voltage supply terminals, relay outputs and digital inputs connection. The

wording besides connector indicates corresponding connection:

(3) SIM Card Slot

A SIM card is required for SMS alert gateway. The SIM card tray can be taken out by pressing on

the eject button beside.

(4) Signal LED, “STATUS”

The Signal LED, “STATUS” indicates the GSM signal coverage of the SIM card. It will flash when

SIM card is detected under GSM coverage and does not flash if SIM card is not detected.

(5) DIN-rail

A DIN-rail click at the back view of the gateway allows user to mount it on a 35mm din-rail.

(6) Ethernet Port (RJ45), “LAN”

This is for Ethernet connection. The pin layout is shown as follow:

To connect with any LAN switch or hub, a UTP straight cable is required. A UTP cross cable is

used to connect with a computer Ethernet port directly.

2.2 Hardware Setup

Connect the SMS alert gateway as the following diagram:

Insert a SIM card into the SIM card tray and turn on the power supply. The Signal LED,

“STATUS” light up but will not be flashing during power cycle. After 10 seconds later, it starts to flash,

indicating that SIM card is detected within GSM coverage. Otherwise, the LED will not flash.

Sim Card

- Ensure that the SIM card is not locked by any PIN.

- Do not use a prepaid SIM card.

- Ensure that there are no SMS or phone number stored in the SIM Card.

Connect Ethernet (RJ45) port, “LAN” to the computer for configuration. After configuring the

gateway, unplug the cable from Ethernet port. The gateway can be installed in existing TCP network, so

that it can be configured in remote area through LAN connection. For such application, the Ethernet port

is connected with Ethernet switch or hub during operation period.

2.3 LAN Configuration

Connect the UTP cable to the LAN port of the AG1000-01. Power up AG1000-01. Wait until the LINK

light starts to blink

Go to “Control Panel”. Select “Network Connections”.

Right click “Local Area Connection”. Select “Properties”

Configure the Workstation to a static IP address. E.g. 90.0.0.111

Section 3 Web Configuration

3.1 Login

Enter the Web address of the configuration page in the Internet Explorer address bar. Enter the correct

username and password to login.

Default factory setting:

IP / Web address : http://90.0.0.110/

3.2 Main

1 - Navigation tab which navigate through pages:

• Main – Main page.

• Group List – Create a hand phone Group list of 1 to 8.

• Point List – Create alarm point list.

• Edit Profile – Change of profile. (Eg. Username, Password or IP address)

• Event Log – Display Log events.

• Reset Setting – Reset all setting. All data will be gone.

• Log out – End all session.

3 - Display the alarm status of each individual point.

4 - Enable / Disable Master and Slave device.

3.3 Group List

1 - Navigation tab which navigate through the hand phone list of group 1 to group 8 where group 8 is

the administrator.

2 - Display list of hand phone number.

• Name – Name of the hand phone user. Maximum 15 characters. (Field not

required)

• Handphone no. – Key in the hand phone number including the country code into the textbox. (Eg. +65XXXXXXXX)

• Delay (Min) – Enter the delay in minutes before it sends SMS alarm to the next hand phone number. (Default: 0, Max: 500min)

3 - Point Setting

• Point No. – Identification of the point.

• Alarm State – Set the alarm to trigger when in open/close contact.

• Contact Group – Select the contact group to notify if an alarm is triggered.

• Reminder delay – To send a reminder SMS if alarm is triggered and not acknowledge.

(Max 500min)

• Enable – To enable a point before it can monitor the status.

• Device Name – Name of the device point

• On Message – Message received upon alarm activated. Empty field to disable SMS message.

• Off Message – Message received upon alarm deactivated. Empty field to disable SMS message.

3.5 Edit Profile

1 - To change Username. Maximum 15 characters.

2 - To change Password. Maximum 15 characters.

3 - To change IP and Netmask Address and. Note: Changing of IP Address will result in a change in

the web address accordingly too.

3.6 Event Log

Provide a web logging features which stores up to 200 logs events.

Display records of:

– Alarm triggered. – SMS received and send out from the device.

Click on “Clear Log” to clear all logging data.

3.7 Reset Setting

Click “Reset Master” to reset Master Device setting to default. All data in group list and point list will

be deleted. Reset will take approximately 1 minute.

Click “Reset Slave 1” or “Reset Slave 2” to reset Slave Device to Default setting.

Section 4 Function Description

4.1 SMS alarming

In “Alarm Group” setting, the interval delay among each hand phone number is configurable. The

numbers without any delay in between is considered as one level. User can define a number of levels of

numbers according to different application consideration. If there are multiple levels of hand phone

numbers assigned to attend an alarm condition, then it is considered as escalation alarming. The delay in

between is escalation delay. Alarm SMS message is first sent out to the first level of users immediately

and to the subsequent levels in pre-defined delay. Either when the alarm condition is not longer valid or

someone has acknowledged the alarm, the SMS alarming stops from further escalating. When the alarm

condition is recovered, a recovery SMS message is sent to all the hand phone users who have received

the alarm SMS message by then.

If there is only one level of hand phone numbers assigned, it is considered as broadcasting alarming. There is no significant delay among the SMS sending to all the numbers. The following two examples

illustrate further about the two different alarming structures:

Example #1: Immediate broadcasting of alarm SMS

When dry contact no.1 is closed, it will be treated as an alarm condition. Alert gateway will

then inform engineer 1 to 3 with a pre-defined alarm SMS immediately. Provided that such alarm

condition is neither recovered nor acknowledged, the alert gateway will send the alarm SMS to

these three engineers in 10 minutes later as reminder.

In this example, there is only one alarming level, which consists of three engineers to attend the

alarm condition of dry contact no.1, since the delay intervals among them are 0. The SMS alarming

terminates after engineer 3 receives second alarm SMS (reminder). If the reminder delay is zero,

then these engineers will only receive the first alarm SMS without any reminder. The alarming

sequence is as follow:

Example #2: Sending alarm SMS in escalating sequence

When dry contact no.1 is closed, it will be treated as an alarm condition. Alert gateway will then inform engineer 1 to 3 with pre-defined alarm SMS immediately. Provided such alarm

condition is neither recovered nor acknowledged, the alert gateway will send the alarm SMS to

these three engineers in 10 minutes later as reminder. Unlike Example #1, SMS alarming does not

terminate after reminding these three engineers. In the next 5 minutes delay, the alert gateway

escalates its SMS alarming to supervisor 1 to 3. After 10 minutes again, similar reminder routine

applies to these three supervisors as well.

In this example, the alert gateway treats these six identities as two alarming levels because a

delay is selected between engineer 3 and supervisor 1. Therefore engineer 1 to 3 belongs to first

level, and supervisor 1 to 3 belongs to second. The alert gateway terminates SMS alarming after

sending second alarming SMS to supervisor 3. If the reminder delay is zero, then alert gateway will

escalate SMS alarming to second level 5 minutes after dry contact no.1 is closed. The alarming

sequence is as follow:

Looking at the two examples above, a 1 minute delay is assigned to the last identity. (Refer to the

engineer 3 in example #1 and supervisor 3 in example #2). A non-zero delay is needed at the last alarm

group identity to enable an alarm reminder for the group. Without such 1 minutes delay, the 10 minutes

reminder will be ignored in example #1, therefore, engineers 1 to 3 will only receive 1 alarm SMS. For

example #2, the alarm reminder still applies for engineer 1 to 3 as there is a delay of 5 minutes assigned

to the next alarm group but no longer for supervisor 1 to 3. The alarming terminates after sending one alarm SMS to supervisor 1 to 3.

4.2 Triggering 2nd AG1000-01 relay output

If a 2nd AG1000-01 is installed far apart, AG1000-01 is able to trigger a relay output of the 2nd

AG1000-01 using a SMS message. This section below will show a brief detail of the setup required.

Device 1

Device name Include “Set” in front of “DO1" where “DO1” is the name of the relay output of

device 2.

ON Message “1.” To trigger the relay when alarm on.

OFF Message “0.” To off the relay when alarm off.

- Include Handphone number of device 2 in any Group of the Group List.

- Add in the Handphone number of device 1 in Group 8 (Admin) of the Group List. Required to be at

admin group to trigger relay output.

When DO1 relay is trigger, Device 2 will send alert SMS to contact group 1.

4.3 Remote SMS requests

Besides receiving alarm message in remote area, there are others useful SMS functions available for

pre-configured hand phone users.

(1) Alarm Acknowledgement:

To stop SMS alarm from further escalating or reminding, send an acknowledgement SMS to the

gateway. The format is as such: ack xxx. where xxx is the point name given to the alarm point. Upon

receiving an acknowledgement, the gateway will broadcast to all hand phone users who have received

corresponding alarm message. These hand phone users will receive a SMS in such format: xxx is

acknowledged by yyy. Where xxx indicates point name and yyy is the hand phone number which sent the

acknowledgement SMS.

(2) Request the current status of a contact point:

To get the current status of a contact point, send a status request SMS to the gateway. The format is

as such: get xxx. where xxx is the point name given to the contact point. The reply is in such format: xxx

open/close <normal/alarm/alarm acknowledged><yhrzmin>. where xxx indicates point name. In the

last bracket, <yhrzmin> indicates how long the contact point has been staying on that state, either open

or close.

(3) Trigger the relay output:

SMS alert gateway provides four relay outputs, which are triggered through SMS message. To

trigger one output, send SMS in such format: set xxx 1/0. where xxx indicates the point name, 1 for

triggering output into alarm state, and 0 to recover that output. If the relay output is connected with

normally open circuitry, then SMS message, set xxx 1 closes the output. Vice versa, the same SMS

opens the output for normally close circuitry. Upon receiving relay triggering message, SMS alert

gateway generates the following reply; xxx is set to 1/0. where x indicates the point number, xxx

indicates the point name. Power reset will take place if during receiving SMS, the gateway has its

appropriate (xxx) relay output (NC when closing or NO when opening) connecting to power.

(4) Activate\Deactivate a contact point:

Only the hand phone numbers configured as administrators is allowed to either activate or

deactivate a contact point through SMS. The SMS format is as such: act xxx 1/0. where xxx indicates the point name, 1 for activation and 0 for deactivation. After deactivating a contact point, SMS alert

gateway does not send any alarm SMS whenever the point is under alarm condition.

(5) Correct the internal clock:

The internal clock of gateway can be corrected by sending SMS in such format: tim. After receiving

the SMS, gateway will synchronize its own internal clock with the actual real time clock according to

the service provider of the SIM card inserted. Therefore, the alarm condition time is reported correctly.

This SMS function is normally used during first installation of the SMS alert gateway.

All the SMS functions provided by SMS alert gateway can be referred to Appendix B. It lists down

all the format of SMS request and corresponding reply from gateway. With the aid of such SMS

functions, user is allowed to control and monitor the equipment remotely.

Appendix B: SMS Message format list

SMS alarm message format

xxx yyy<#y><zzz>

xxx – point name assigned by use;

yyy – ON message assigned by user;

y – If y is 1, then the SMS is the first alarm message for user regarding the latest alarm happened

on pt#x. For reminding SMS alarm message, y will be 2.

zzz – zzz is the time stamp for the latest alarm happened at particular point. One of the examples is

as follow:

<Wed 12/1 14:30:10> which indicate that the alarm happened about 2.30pm in 12th January,

Wednesday.

SMS alarm recovery message format

xxx yyy<zzz>

xxx – point name assigned by user;

yyy – OFF message assigned by user;

zzz – zzz is the time stamp for the latest alarm recovery at particular point. One of the examples is as

follow:

<Wed 12/1 14:30:10> which indicate that the alarm was recovered about 2.30pm in 12th

January, Wednesday.

xx – Old hand phone number to be replaced; yy – New hand phone number for replacing;

x – Point number, where 1~8 mean digital input 1 to 8, and 9~12 mean relay output 1 to 4;

k – Alarm group number; l – Index of a hand phone among alarm group x.

SMS requests from 7 to 11 are allowed for administrative hand phone users only. If the SMS format

is incorrect, then SMS alert gateway replies to sender in such format: Service restricted. For any

requesting hand phone number out of pre-configured list, no reply will be generated from gateway. All

the commands in SMS requests are case-insensitive, but point name is case-sensitive to its actual name

given during configuration.

Appendix C: Connection instruction for extended IO.

The following steps are to connect up the SMS Alert Gateways for IO extension.

1. Connect up the devices physically from D+ to D+ and D- to D-.

2. Referring to the manual of AG1000-10, set the 2 AG1000-10 to slave ID to 1 and 2 respectively

and baud rate to 19200, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control.

3. Open the Web configuration page. Select numbers of slaves based on how many units are

attached to the AG1000-10.

4. After configuration, disconnect the Ethernet connection.
