The sales figure of the propertymarket through the first five

months of the year defies the cur-rent sentiments that buying a housein the maximum city is beyondreach of a common man and thatthemarket has stagnated. Sales reg-istrations have held strong, giventhe low base of the last year, cou-pled with the festive seasonlaunches post a long hiatus. After the strong spurt in March

2013, where sales registration hit a31-month high, April and May wit-nessed a small monthly decline of8% and 6%, respectively; however, grew 24% and 15%, respectively, ona year on year basis. The number ofsales in both the months remained

north of the 6,000 mark. The growth was led by sales from

Mumbai ‘City’ as against suburbanMumbai on account of the largelaunches that took place in the city-centre. In fact, the number for ‘City’sales was positive not only com-pared to the last year but also com-pared to the last quarter.“However, given the lack of

launches in the last fewmonths andthe expected slowness during themonsoon season, we expect salesregistration numbers to weakenover the next few months,” saidKejal Mehta, Research Analyst withPrabhudas Lilladher.According to the statement, lease

“For heaven’s sake senddoctors to the tribal

areas,” remarked the divisionbench of the Bombay HighCourt on Wednesday, whilecoming down heavily on theState Government for its lack-adaisical approach in dealingwith an increasing number ofmalnourishment cases in thestate. The judgment comes as

the verdict of a Public InterestLitigation (PIL) filed by anAmravati-based NGO, Khoj, regarding the abysmal condi-tions in the Melghat region, that were resulting in chronicmalnutrition and fatalities. The petitioner, Purnima

Upadhyay of the NGO, con-tended that therewas no gov-ernment information

available in the public do-main on the extent and statusof malnutrition in Melghat.

According to the petition,Purnima Upadhyay said thatas per the statistics of theHealth Department, as ofJune 2012 there were 3,431and 561 children afflictedwith moderately acute andseverely acute malnutritionrespectively. “Children whowere moderately under-weight and severely under-weight numbered 10,047and 3,798 respectively. In thespan of three months be-tween April and June, therewere 81 deaths, 42 stillbirthsand four cases of maternalmortality. Though malnutri-tion has been raging uncon-trolled for decades, theofficial figures for the totalnumber of malnourished

children for the last twoyears remained at 14, 000,”said Upadhyay. While arguing onWednes-

day, Upadhyay told the divi-sion bench that even afterearlier directions to the gov-ernment by theHighCourt, tofill up vacant posts in hospi-tals, till date there are still nogynecologist, pediatricians, radiologists and anesthetics.Reacting to this, the divi-

sion bench consisting of Jus-tice D. Y. Chandrachud andJustice Amjad Sayed said,“The Government makesdoctors sign a bond statingthat they will serve in suchareas. Why aren’t they beingdeployed? We are thoroughlydissatisfied with the inaction

on the part of the state gov-ernment. If action is nottaken a contempt noticeagainst the secretary of thePublic Health Departmentwill be issued within twoweeks and we will direct thegovernment to deploy gyne-cologists, pediatricians, radi-ologists and anesthetics athospitals in tribal areaswhere there is a dearth ofemergency medial care.”After the hearing, the court

posted the matter for twoweeks and directed the stategovernment to file a reply onwhat action it has taken intackling the dearth of doctorsin hospitals in Melghat.

Patnaik and Ranjan Gogoisaid such actions on part ofsome police officers bring abad name to the countryand directed that the foreign

nationals be allowed to leavefor their country.“The Mumbai police, in-

stead of protecting the

Uganda nationals, have filedan FIR which is baseless. Thecountry gets a bad name be-cause of acts of few officers. It is very unfortunate,” thebench said. The court passed the

order on a plea filed by thethree Uganda nationals, in-cluding Issac InsangaMusumba who claims to besenior advisor to the Presi-dent of Uganda, allegingthat police officials were ha-rassing them on the instruc-tions of Videocon Group. The foreign nationals had

arrived in Mumbai on April17 to sort out disputes with

the Videocon Group relatedto mines lease awarded tothe company in Uganda. Two days thereafter, a

complaint was filed againstthem on behalf of the groupand police restrained themfrom leaving the countryand impounded their pass-ports. They then ap-proached the SupremeCourt.Granting relief to them,

It will be one of the most daringand captivating live events inhistory - Nik Wallenda, known as“The King of the High Wire,” willtraverse the majestic GrandCanyon, without using a harness.Wallenda will tightrope walk

higher than he’s ever attemptedbefore at 1,500 feet abovethe Little Colorado River, a heightgreater than the Empire StateBuilding. In 2012, Wallendabecame the first person totightrope walk directly over NiagaraFalls from the U.S. to Canada at aheight of 200 feet.He himself is reported to have

said, “The stakes don’t get muchhigher than this. “The only thingthat stands between me and thebottom of the canyon is a two-inchthick wire. I’m looking forward toshowing the audience a view of thecanyon they’ve never seen before.”Wallenda is just 34, and for him,

the event is the fulfillment of alifelong dream to walk at such agreat height as well as a chance tohonor his great-grandfather, thelegendary Karl Wallenda, who diedafter falling from a tightrope in

Puerto Rico in 1978.The Grand Canyon, one of

America’s most visited touristdestinations, provides aspectacular backdrop to the event. The tightrope crossing will takeplace in a remote section of thecanyon operated by the NavajoNational Parks and Recreation. You can watch it live on the

Discovery Channel on Monday,June 24, at 5.30am IST onwards. We can tell you one thing, it will beworth the trouble and certainlybeat the Oscars hands down!If you want to be reminded, send

an SMS < DISCOVERYCHANNEL Y>to 56161. If you miss it in themorning, you will be able to catch itagain at 8 pm on the same day. Butit won’t be live!

Air Force of India andother ‘shorties’We still cannot figure out why thepress itself was so enraged whenJustice Markandey Katju, chairmanof the Press Council of India, suggested that journalists, like

those in other professions, neededto be trained formally and perhapslicensed to practice theirprofessions. After all, propertraining never harmed anyone, though we suspect that much ofthe so-called “training” beingimparted by the teeming numbersof J Schools that have cropped up,are actually contributing to theproblem rather than solving it!Yesterday morning we listened as

an excitable young thing (therereally is no other kind) on NDTV,reporting on the floods at

Uttarakhand, gasped and gulpedher way through a report. On the ground, she pointed to

the sky where there was ahelicopter, urging viewers to look atwhat “the Air Force of India” hadsent in to rescue stranded pilgrimson what she called a “shortie”.Later in the report, seemingly

without drawing a breath andkeeping up a continuous line oflargely repetitive patter, she askedthe “strandees”, “Has thegovernment done anything to helpyou?”, setting off the standard

moans. Neither she, norany of the otherreporters on otherchannels, to be fair, thought it essentialperhaps to ask pilgrimswhy they make theirpilgrimages so late in theseason, so close to themonsoon. At which point we

switched off.

From Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon

Kitna deti hai?Of course no-one asked thequestion – not when themodel itself was surrounded bymedia and photographers furiouslyclicking away, practically ignoring thetwo other models in LBDs brought into lean fetchingly against it. In fact,at Tote on the Turf yesterdaymorning, where the LamborghiniGallardo LP 550-2 was beinglaunched with much fanfare, one got the impressionthat they were rather considered inthe way!The fanfare was because these

were no ordinary Lamborghinis butpart of the India Serie Speciale, coming with a price tag of Rs 3.06crore (ex Maharashtra showroom).Actually, says Autocar, “It is thesame, just jumped up a little on theoccasion of the car maker’s 50thanniversary”.They had a big do recently in Italy

to mark the event, and becausethere are biggish plans for India aswell, what better way than to link upcar with anniversary and Indiacolours!Did we mention that? There are

three colours available: red, whiteand orange to mimic (you guessed it)the tricolour. And one more specialtyis the fact that only six are beingmade, so this limited edition is reallylimited. One has already beensnapped up, so our readers areurged to rush if they want one of the

remaining cars. And while no-one asked the one

question all Indians, who will neverbe able to own a Lamborghini in theirlifetimes (99 per cent of thepopulation, we bet), would like toask, we can at least answer it, fromthe technical specifications for thecar. Its fuel tank has a capacity of 90

liters, engine oil 10 litres

and coolant 20 litres. As for kitnadeti hai, that seems to be 100 km in20.1 litres in the city, while the samedistance can be done in 9.2 litresoutside, referred to as urban andextra urban cycles respectively, giving drivers a combined output of13.31 litres per 100 km. Do themath! Not that any of the owners are

likely to ask or even notice!

The Anti Corruption Bu-reau (ACB) have ar-rested Police Inspector

(PI) Manohar Gavare, who isattached to the VinobaBhave Nagar Police station, for accepting a bribe ofRs.25,000. Gavare allegedlytook the bribe from a loaderin return for not applying tothe court to extend his son’sremand.A complaint in this regard

was registered by the loaderwhose son SantoshMithailalGupta is in jail on charges ofrobbery. Santosh, a tempodriver, is under arrest since

May 26 for being involved ina fight onMay 18.Santosh offered his tempo

to a shopkeeper who dealt inrags, and was standing be-side his shopwhen the shop-keeper had a fight withanother shopkeeper. Al-though Santosh had nothingto do with the fight Gavarepicked him up and listedhim as one of the accused.

When Gupta beggedGavare to let his son go,Gavare told him to pay upRs.1 lakh. If not hewould notimplicate Santosh. WhenGupta was unable toarrange the money the boywas arrested. Gavare then of-fered to release Santosh onbail if his father paidRs.75,000.Being a very poor man,

Gupta was unable to arrangethat amount either. Finally,Gavare said hewould bewill-ing to go down to Rs.25,000.A desperate Gupta then

The highway, therefore, has come to resemble a broken villageroad. In the rain, it becomes a nightmare ofclogged traffic that includes all forms of ve-hicular transport from the most primitiverural kind to modern articulated lorries ofvast proportions. The observant traveler can-not fail to notice how hard it is for these lor-ries to negotiate the endless unmarked speedbreakers on a road that is itself an endlessspeed breaker. Nor can he fail to notice thespreading pools of rotting garbage that linethe highway and spill across it with the rains. They pour out of the squalid, ugly villages andtowns on either side, that in the absence ofmunicipal facilities dump their waste on theedge of the highway.

Nitish too wants to be PMWhy am I telling you all this in a week that

I am writing about the very ‘secular’ ChiefMinister of Bihar? What does it have to dowith his recent ‘secular’ drama? In my view ithas everything to do with it, and with everyother political drama that grabs headlinesevery week when we should be talking ofmuch more important things like our enor-mous problems of unplanned urbanization. And our evenmore enormous problemswithwaste disposal so inadequate, that half ofIndia’s diseases spread from rotting garbageand dirty water. If the political dramas gaveus a break, we would be able to talk of our se-rious, chronic problems. The dramas give usno choice but to write about the topic of themoment. So here is my analysis of what thesupposedly high-minded chief minister ofBihar is up to.Formore than a year now I have heard from

colleagues who have traveled to Patna, thatNitish Kumar has his eyes set on being primeminister. It was after he won his second termin 2010, that he began to contemplate thepossibilities of attaining the highest office inthe land, and he hasworked towards this with

impressive assiduousness. Narendra Modi isoften charged by the Congress Party of ma-nipulating themedia, but he is a novice com-pared to what the Chief Minister of Bihar hasmanaged to do.Let me give you one small example. In

the 2010 Bihar election, it was the BharatiyaJanata Party that nearly doubled itsseats going from 55 in the 2005 election to91. It won 36 more seats, while the JanataDal (United) went up less dramaticallyfrom 88 to 115. But, to discover this youwould have needed to read the fine print, be-cause every political commentator in thecountry projected it as a ’massive victory’ forNitish. Long articles appeared in the nationalpress about his schemes in rural Bihar thathad allegedly reduced poverty and increasedgrowth rates dramatically. Almost nobody no-

ticed that Sushil Modi deserved even morecredit for having almost swept all the seats inurban Bihar.Nitish Kumar then went on to project him-

self as the creator of what his acolytes startedto call the Bihar model, in which they saideconomic development was slower butmoreeffective because it was ‘inclusive’. This ideagot international currency not long agowhenImran Khan said that hewould like to use the‘Bihar model’ of development in Pakistan ifhe ever got the chance. The truth is that thereis nothing new about Nitish Kumar’s eco-nomic ideas. He is an old-fashioned socialistof the Ram Manohar Lohia genre; all that hehas done is to implement his socialist ideasbetter than the chief ministers who wentbefore him. There is no question that there are signs of

progress in Bihar, but since it went through adark age underMr. andMrs. LalooYadav, anyimprovement would be seen as a miracle. And why should Nitish Kumar not boastabout it?Why should his suave, ex-bureaucratspokesmen not sing paeans to him in thedrawing rooms of Delhi and on primetimetelevision? Why should all of us not rejoicethat India’s poorest, most backwardstate should finally be in the hands of aman who is sincere about dragging it up bythe bootstraps?

Now Advani seen as secular? My problem is not with Nitish Kumar’s so-

cialist economic ideas, although I am not asocialist, and nor do I have any problemswithhim wanting to become prime minister. It isan ambition that anyone who enters a careerin politics should have.My only problemwithNitish Kumar’s withdrawal from the NDA iswith his ‘secular’ reasons for doing so. He nowsays that he will return to the NDA if it is putoncemore in the hands of L.K. Advani whomhe now considers a ‘secular’ leader.Has he forgotten that it was Advani who

rode his chariot from Somnath to Ayodhyawith the specific purpose of building a tem-ple to Rama on the exact spot where the BabriMasjid stood?Has he forgotten the thousandsof Muslims who were killed in the rathyatra’swake? Has he forgotten that the violence wasso bad that Laloo Yadav as chief minister ofBihar refused to let Advani’s chariot go be-yond Samastipur?Has he forgotten that it wasAdvani during the course of the Ayodhyamovement who invented the term ‘pseudo-secularism’ to denounce the kind of secular-ism that has been themoral creed of politicalparties like his own? Speaking of ‘pseudo-sec-ularism’ it is a good time to revive the expres-sion, because if we have seen a recentexample, it has been in the withdrawal of theJanata Dal (U) from the NDA.Not even the lefty political pundits in

Delhi who despise Narendra Modi havedared say that the Bihar chief ministerhas come out as a shining example of secu-larism. Even they have noticed the politicalopportunism of the move. For me personallyI have serious reservations now about NitishKumar after this because inmy view themostdangerous kind of political leaders are thosewho are shameless hypocrites. They areimpossible to trust.

Ponder awhile…“The tendency to claimGod as an ally forour partisan value and ends is the sourceof all religious fanaticism.”

AFTER being in alliance with theBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for

17 years, Bihar JD(U) chief NitishKumar has discovered it is commu-nal. Just one ‘communal’ leader inthe BJP — Narendra Modi — haschanged his mindset and made himleave the alliance and move towardsthe Congress party – his new secularally. It is really a wonder how he wasin a alliance with a communal partyall these years.Nitish Kumar’smove is to some ex-

tent opportunistic. For the last oneyear, he has been trying to get fromthe UPA special status for the state. Now that he has dropped BJP,chances are hewill join the Congressand fight 2014 election togetheralong with the latter. The half-waymark in the Bihar as-

sembly is 122.The JD(U) has now gota thin majority. Themotion express-ing confidence in Nitish Kumar’sgovernment was passed by 126 vot-ers supporting it. The BJP membershad walked out and the final verdictshows that the government musthave got required support from theCongress. It becomes clear that the Congress

has played a well-thought out strat-egy. Just now it is a non-entity inBihar. It stands to gain if it fights the2014 Lok Sabha poll along with theJD(U). It must be also looking for-ward to some immediate gains. Ithas some important bills which needto be passed in the ensuing Mon-soon Session of Parliament. It has abig problem getting majority in theHouse and the support of 10 JD(U)MPs might help it deal with it.

More pseudo-secular than secular?

JD(U) finds a newsecular ally

‘Love is something absolutely unselfish’LOVE is something absolutely unselfish,

that which has no thought beyond the glo-rification and adoration of the object uponwhich our affections are bestowed. It is aquality which bows down and worships andasks nothing in return. Merely to love is thesole request that true love has to ask.It is said of a Hindu saint (Mirabai) that

when she was married, she said to her hus-band, the king, that she was alreadymarried.“To whom?” asked the king.“To God,” was the reply. She went among the poor and the needy

and taught the doctrine of the extreme lovefor God. One of her prayers is significant inshowing the manner in which her heart wasmoved:“I ask not for wealth; I ask not for position;

I ask not for salvation; placeme in a hundredhells if it to be Thy wish, but let me continueto regard Thee as my love.”The early language abounds in the beauti-

ful prayers of this woman. When her end came, she entered into

‘samadhi’ on the banks of the river. She com-posed a beautiful song in which she statedthat she was going to meet her beloved. Menare capable of philosophical analysis of reli-gion. A woman is devotional by nature andloves God from the heart and soul and not

from the mind. The songs of Soloman are one of the most

beautiful parts of the Bible. The language inthem ismuch of that affectionate kind whichfound in the prayers of SaintMirabai. And yetI have heard that Christians are going to havethese incomparable songs removed. I haveheard an explanation of the songs, in whichit said that Soloman loved a young girl anddesired her to return his royal affection. Thegirl, however, loved a youngman and did notwant to have anything to do with Soloman. This explanation is excellent to some peo-

ple, because they cannot understand suchwondrous love for God as is embodied in thesongs.Love for God in India is different from Love

for God elsewhere, becausewhen you get intothe country where the thermometers readsforty degrees below zero, the temperament ofthe people changes. The aspirations of thepeople in the climate where the books of theBible are said to have been written were dif-ferent from the aspirations of theWestern na-tions, who aremore apt to worship allmightydollar with the warmth expressed in the

songs then to worship God.Love for God seems to be based upon a basis

of “What can I get out of it?’” In their prayersthey ask for all kinds of selfish things. Somepeople are always wanting God to give themsomething. They appear as beggars before thethrone of the Almighty. A story is told of a beg-gar who applied to an emperor for alms. While he was waiting it was time for the

emperor to offer up prayer. The emperorprayed, “Oh God give me more wealth; givememore power; give me a greater empire.”The beggar started to leave. The emperor

turned and asked him, “Why are you going?”“I do not beg from beggars,” was the reply. Some people find it difficult to understand

the frenzy or religious fervor which movedthe heart of Prophet Mohammed. He wouldgrovel in the dust and writhe in agony. Holymen who have experienced these extremeemotions have been called epileptic. The ab-sence of the thought of self is the essentialcharacteristic of the love for the God.Religion nowadays has become a mere

hobby and fashion. People go to religiousplaces like a flock of sheep. They embraceGod because they needHim.Most people areunconscious atheists who self complacentlythink that they are devout believers.

Deadly Maoist attacksINTERNAL security is a matter ofconcern in India as Naxals andMaoists cause menacing attacks oncommon public and caused deathsin the process. We are botheredmore about the border, while the in-ternal security is under constantthreat. Dhanbad-Patna Intercity Ex-press train which was attacked bymore than 100Maoists showswherethe weakness lies. When the trainstopped inside a tunnel in the forestarea the Maoists got into the trainand looted passengers and whichincluded women and they wereasked to step out of the train. In themelee that followed five RPF per-sonnel on board the train and theMaoists exchange fire and in thecross firing one jawan and two pas-sengers died and five other sus-tained injuries. The securitylacunae caused loss of human life.

IT is learnt with serious concernthat yet another Maoist attack hasoccurred this time on a passengertrain in broad daylight. The attackwas massive, howeverthe casualty was less dueto a little amateurish na-ture of the attackers, who com-prised mostly of teenaged girls inone of the seven infamous Maodominated Bihar districts, Jamui.Only three weeks ago we witnessedthe ruthless and fatal attacks on the

senior Congress leaders in MadhyaPradesh, again by the Maoists. It ishigh time that the home ministryand the RPF wake up and take im-mediate measures to prevent suchattacks on the trains to ensure safejourney of innocent travelers.

Clean public toilets neededTHERE are no clean toilets inMum-bai, particularly in South Mumbai, which in spite of being well re-portedwidely from time to time hasgone unheeded. The govt. or BMCshould take this with due serious-ness and planmore toilets and lookafter their proper maintenance. Atpresent, the people and elders, inparticular, have to run several kilo-metres to access a toilet which arealways nauseatingly dirty and runcontrary to the very concept ofhealth which could have adverseramifications. An action plan needsto be executed on top priority.

Fire preventionINDUSIND Bank Limited fire onJune 7, last, is an eye-opener. Highrise buildings and other places needto follow fire prevention normsstrictly. Lot of electrical short cir-cuits are taking place because of air-conditioners used for a long timeand computers kept on duringnight also by mistake. Before clos-ing office premises all precaution-arymeasures should be taken in fullto avoid fire mishaps. Current sta-tistics of deaths and injuries, in re-lation to fires proves to be alarmingand an increasing number of peo-ple affected by losses and fatal in-juries are being reported andaccounted for each year. Leaks in

piped gas and gas cylinders are rootcause formost of the fires in houses.

LETTERS

LETTER OFTHE DAY

ELEMENTARY: The govt. should makesure that there are no lacunae in internalsecurity of our nation and should notconcentrate only on the borders.

DIVORCE of the BJP-JD(U) al-liance in Bihar will end the exis-tence of the National DemocraticAlliance (NDA) which is the firststep in shaping the political con-tours of the 2014 general electionbattle. It will mark the isolation ofNarendra Modi’s BJP on the na-tional scene, leaving it with justtwo allies—Shiv Sena and AkaliDal. I strongly feel that BJP underModi may not come to power andit may not even cross the halfwaymark of 272 seats due to the com-munal and authoritative style ofworking of Modi, who being theenemy of the minority commu-nity and guilty of butchering in-nocent people during the Gujaratriots in 2002, will never get thesupport of Muslim voters whomay likely vote for the Congress-led UPA and will see to it that aperson like Modi whose hands arefull of blood does not get a chanceto become the next primeminis-ter of the country. The break-up inBJP-JD(U) ties is the doom for thesaffron party and for which Modiand his party leadership will be

fully responsible.—Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

THE BJP has taken a right deci-sion in elevating the status ofNarendra Modi and making it eas-ier for him to become the primeministerial candidate of the Party.Today, he is the only person in theBJP to have the charisma and theorganisational and administrativequalities necessary to become the

primeminister. These are thequalities which Rahul Gandhi andto a great extent, L.K. Advani arelacking. Although Advani, whowas understandably disap-pointed, chose to stay away fromthe Goa convention, resigned andeven withdrew his resignationwithin 36 hours, he should realisethat such moves will only damagethe integrity of the Party and af-fect their electoral success. Butthe Party should also recognise

the efforts put in by Advani tobuild the party and increase theirnumber of seats from 2 to 89. Inthe current political and eco-nomic scenario, a change is verymuch necessary and a person likeModi with proven abilities couldlead the Nation to peace, progressand prosperity.

NARENDRAMODI has become aheadache, not only for Indianpoliticians, but also for the US.The decision of BJP that declaredModi as election campaignershook the world. As per BJP’sstrategy, Modi would be the mosteligible candidate for the post ofprimeminister. This has not gonedown well with the US. The UShas so far taken a stand againstModi. Till date, after 2002 riots, UShas denied a visa to Modi, butwhat would happen if the NDAwins the 2014 poll battle andModibecomes the PM. Nowadays, thishas become a debatable

issue in the US.—Bhavesh Jani, Nalasopara

THANK God the decks are nowcleared for Namo to be selected asPrimeminister in waiting. NitishKumar and his ego problems, andL.K. Advani and his pipe dreamsare now laid at rest. Atleast for thetime being!Politics is a dirty game and no

one is clean. But at least one hassome hope for a man who knowshow to govern and bring Indiaback on the tracks. Gujarat is anexample of what can happen if achief minister means business. The UPA is pretending that

Modi is “no threat to us. AndRahul Gandhi is the heir apparentetc.” India have a chance to be amajor super power under Modi. The so called secular parties

must stop using the Godhra cardagainst Modi. The UPA cannot af-ford to do that. The sullied imageof the riots and murders followingIndira Gandhi’s assassination arevery much on the horizon.‘Yeh public hain, yeh sab janti

hain’!Wait for 2014 and see Indiaawake to prosperity and power.

BLEAK FUTURE: When Nitish Kumar walked out of the marriage with the BJP inBihar, alarm bells started ringing in the NDA as the general polls are fast approaching.

JD(U) exit will spell doom for NDA in 2014

THIS refers to the front-page re-port ‘Death stalks hillocks’ (ADC,June 19) which is very true. Infact, as a geologist and a memberof the BMC’s disaster manage-ment plan for Mumbai, I havebeen warning about the possibili-ties of landslides, especially, inthose places where the hills havebeen quarried but the cut-slopeshave not been properly protectedand the abandoned quarry-floorshave been occupied by hutments. The corporation has an exhaus-tive inventory of all these spotsvulnerable to landslides but noprecautionary measures seem tohave been taken to prevent theslides. The 26/7 deluge broughtabout a massive slide in the SakiNaka area which killed 73 peopleand earlier at Chiragnagar inGhatkopar (West) an equal num-ber died due to rock-slides. Ask-ing the residents to move out isonly one part of the story. The ur-gent and more important need isto stabilise the hill slopes by ap-

propriate methods of which thereare several. It is earnestly hopedthat the civic body with its budgetof several thousand crores willwake up to the ground realitiesand do something fast.

NORTH INDIA in general and Ut-tarakhand in particular receivedhigh rainfall and caused damageto property and many lives werelost in the fury of the rivers andtheir tributaries in the entire area.People ran for dear life but beforethey could realise danger hadstruck them with the fall of build-ings on the river side. Such a situ-ation could have been avoidedhad the rivers been nationalisedand connected to each other toavoid such a disaster. At a timewhen there is water shortage inthe State of Tamil Nadu, riverwater is overflowing and surpluswater is going to the sea. BothMandakini and Alaknanda, majortributaries of the Ganga, are flow-ing over the danger mark and thebridge connecting Rudraprayagand Gaurikund has been dam-aged leading to its closure. It iswar like situation on the river bedof these rivers and Army has beencalled for help.

Phase-I of the Monorail projectfrom Fine Arts in Chembur toWadalaRTO,which spans adis-

tance of 20 km, is all set to be inau-gurated shortly. Part of a Rs.2,700crorehi-tech infrastructureproject, itis intended to transform Mumbaiinto a rapid transportation hub. Thetechnologybeingworld-class, effortsare on to beautify all the proposedstations andalso the spaceunder theroute, which is to have flowering anddecorative plants and shrubs run-ning for the whole distance. However, this plan for beautifica-

tion is not being pursued diligently.Rubble picked up from construc-tion sites is being dumped along

most of the route instead of fertilegarden soil in which to grow plants. The ADC has found out that for

filling of garden soil, the stretchfrom the Fine Arts to RC Marg(Ashish Cinema) in Chembur, a dis-tance of 4-5 km, was entrusted to acontractor named Muttu, while therest of the stretch of 15 km, wasgiven to Bhanushali Constructionand Deshmukh Constructions byMMRDA Executive Engineer forPhase-1, Madhukar Kharat.Sources say that almost 80 per

cent of the stretch has been filledwith construction rubble, with a lit-tle garden soil sparingly put inwhilelevelling the place. The soil fillingwas to have been completed beforethe monsoon, but work is still in

progress. The ADC spoke to Muttu, who in-

dicated that the contractwas given tohim for Rs.20 lakh through mutualunderstanding and not through anytenderingprocess. However, a sourcerevealed that the tender to fill thegarden soil was given at the cost ofRs.400 to Rs.500 per square foot. When asked about the constructionrubble being dumped at the site, hesaid that it was being dumped atnight by a rubble mafia and he wasunable to confront them. The ADC then contacted Kharat,

who said, “Rubble mafias aremainly antisocial elements whodump debris late at night. I tell myassistant engineers to inspect thesite early in themorning. At this fivekilometre stretch, it is not possibleto keep security, and that also willprove to be a futile exercise beforethe rubble mafias. When a policecomplaint is given, the police tell usto forward themafia’s vehicle num-ber to them. Payments will not becleared till the removal of rubble isdone by the contractor.”Thriving on the construction ac-

tivity all over Mumbai, the rubblemafia earns fast money for firstclearing, and then even for dump-ing the rubble where required. Sa-hadev Patil, a social worker, says,“They earn anywhere betweenRs.3,000 to Rs.4,000 per truck toclear rubble from construction sitesand again are paid Rs.1,000 toRs.1,500 from people who wantthem to do the dumping at a partic-ular place. It is really a win-win sit-uation for the mafias involved inthis business.”

When most of us have a few weeks to kill,we usually space out in front of thetelevision or just laze around, enjoyingour time off. But not Ria Sakraney.

Instead of wasting away her time, Ria decided tostart a community project — something that wouldmake the city a better place. What did she come upwith? A Crane A Day — a blog that started out withthe idea of making colourful paper cranes andphotographing them in different places every day. But, it’s turned into something more than that. Ria,along with her friend Divya Dev, started Good CraneWeekend, which was based on the observation that people in Mumbai are often oblivious to thepeople around them. With A Crane A Day, theydecided to push people to think of the greater good, even if it was for just one weekend, in the hope thatit would be a permanent change that would stick. Therefore, on June 21, 22 and 23, thousands of

origami cranes are going to be distributed to variousrestaurants in the city where they will be given out tothe customers. Each crane will have a simple gooddeed written on it that is to be carried out by thepeople who receive them. Furthermore, these actsof goodness should be documented by way ofpictures. Basically, if you get a crane, you have to dothe good deed, take a creative picture of the crane, send it to A Crane A Day and pass the crane on. Incase you need an added incentive to do some goodthis weekend, the best five pictures will win prizes. We spoke to Ria to find out more about her social cause.

How did you’ll come up with the concept?I had just quit my job and was waiting for grad

school to start. So, I had a few months to spare anddecided to revisit a hobby of mine — origami. Istarted making cranes and they turned out reallynicely. I made a separate account on Instagram forthe crane and decided to post pictures of it in a newlocation every day. At the same time, my friendDivya had also quit her job and we brainstormed onhow we could take this further. We wanted for it to bemore than just pretty pictures; we wanted to make acommunity project that would make the city abetter place.

How has the response been so far? After we came up with the idea of adding a gooddeed to each crane, we approached restaurants andstores asking them to put a few cranes up. And wewere taken aback with the way they embraced theidea! Most restaurants were so eager and that justgoes to show that everybody does want to help, theyjust need a little encouragement. And for thoseplaces that didn’t immediately take to the idea, well,we simply just marched into the restaurant anddemonstrated how it would work. Once theyunderstood, it was pretty much a go ahead too. Wecan’t wait to see how the public is going to respondto the cranes.

Who comes up with the good deeds that are writtenon the crane?Divya and I sit together and come up with the deeds. They aren’t elaborate ones that require a lot of effort. They are very doable. Some of the deeds include:Feed a stray dog, call a waiter by his name, donateyour old clothes, let go of a grudge or just explore anew part of the city.

What is the ultimate aim of this project? We just hope to make the city a little better place;one small deed at a time. We want to show peoplethat it’s easy to do something nice in your day —either for yourself or for others. Doing somethingnice makes you feel good.

Have you encountered a Grinch or two along the way? Of course! We ran the idea through a few friends andsome of them played devil’s advocate by telling usthat ‘It’s just paper’ or ‘People would crush it up andthrow it away.’ Maybe so, but for every five peoplewho throw it away, if there are just two who dosomething good, our mission would have beenaccomplished.

How do you think a good deed impacts someone?Everyone knows the power of a compliment — itmakes you feel good. A random good deed willbrighten up someone’s day. Doing something goodfor yourself and taking joy in the small things willalso change your outlook.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has done for you randomly? This might sound cheesy, but the best thing is thesupport we’ve received for this project. It’s justshown us that everyone is essentially encouragingand supportive. We are really overwhelmed.

«alia bhatt We think that Alia Bhatt looks cute

and sweet in her age appropriate

dress. However, we’re not sure how

appropriate the shoes are for her

look. However, the short lace dress

makes Alia look feminine and girly.

Apart from those shoes, she’s

accessorised pretty well.

« CELEB HIT OR MISS: GLYNDA ALVES TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT THE BOLLYWOOD BABES WORE THIS WEEK

«deePika Padukone We are over the hi-lo hemline. No

matter which way you present it. The

outfit seems fine at first, but on

closer inspection it looks weird. The

detail on the shoulder makes her look

like she’s carrying a backpack and it’s

never fashionable to sweep the floor.

«evelyn sharma The only thing wow about this look is

Evelyn’s toned and taut tummy. The

rest of her looks like a picnic table.

The outfit is not flattering and the

buttons are straining to hold this

bombshell’s ample cleavage. Her

saving grace is her subtle makeup.

«kalki koechlinThis actress takes a trend and makes

it her own. The short suit is super

cute. We love the print as it adds a

fun and youthful touch. Kalki gives

her outfit an edge by pairing it with

matching brogues. We think she’s

perfectly co-ordinated.

«richa chaddaIf there’s one thing we hate to see

during the monsoon it’s layers of

cakey makeup. Richa’s casual outfit

may be tottering on the wild side (not

in a good way) but her pancake face

seems be ready for the red carpet. An

overall fail.

« 5 WAYS TO ROCK: MONSOON MAKEUP1. have a strong base

Say no to foundation during the monsoon

because it’s just going to run down your face in

lines when it starts to pour. Moisturise and

wash your face properly and apply a waterproof

compact or BB cream. Use a cream-based

blush and avoid anything shiny or powdery.

2. go waterProof

Powdered products are a no-no so and if you

must use an eyeshadow, make sure it is cream

based. Use nudes, beiges and pastels and a

waterproof kajal for your eyes. If you’re going

out, remember to only use waterproof mascara

sparingly to avoid clumps and smudgy lines.

3. stay light

Keep colours light and natural. Don’t use

heavy eye makeup, too much blush or an

overdose of eyeliner or you’ll end up looking

like a raccoon when it begins to run in the rain.

Even waterproof makeup can smudge if it’s

pushed too far.

4. bright liPs

We know you’d love a little colour during the

dull monsoon, so don’t be upset that we just

advised you to stay away from colour when it

comes to makeup. But, we give you permission

to brighten up your lips with shades of pink,

subtle oranges and nudes.

5. keeP it tinted

The best option for monsoon is to use tints.

Save the gloss for a sunny day and stain your

lips and cheeks with bright colours to look

fashionable and to avoid a fashion disaster in

the midst of a torrential downpour. Use a lip

pencil to retain colour for longer.

>> Use cream-based blush and shades ofpink on your lips to keep your makeup lookinggreat during monsoon

« STYLIST SPEAK

l Do invest in a good pair of footwear. Anything plastic,

rubber or patent will do. Gumboots are my hot

favourite this season.

l Don’t wear flip flops. Flip flops have no traction at all

and you will land bottom first into a puddle. Also, they

should be steered clear of at all costs to avoid

splashing muck on your clothes from behind,

while walking!

l Do go easy on the accessories. You wouldn’t want

the metal from your favourite pieces rusting after

the monsoon.

l Don’t wear jeans, unless you really have to. Denim

gets heavy during the rains, adds weight and can

sometimes droop dangerously low. If you do have to

wear them, go for darker shades and washes instead.

l Do swap your regular tote for a waterproof one. Most

bags can’t handle the moist weather and start

to peel.

l Don’t be afraid to carry forward your summer outfits,

into the monsoon. Shorts and summer dresses are a

rage during this season.

l Do carry an umbrella at all times or even a

windcheater. The drowned rat look doesn’t make a

good sight.

l Don’t wear lightweight fabrics. These fabrics tend to

get soaked easily and also become transparent.

l Do wear bright colours. When the weather tends to

be all dull and grey, bright colours are a welcome

change from the dark skies.

l Don’t use hairspray or too many leave-in hair

products as they can stick to your hair, make it heavy

and lead to dandruff.

l Do switch to waterproof makeup to avoid looking like

an antagonist from a horror movie.

I have recently joined a famous publication

house as an intern. The problem is that nobody

here explains anything to me and yet they

expect me to do my job perfectly. My

supervisor gets very irritated if I ask her a lot of

questions. I’m here to learn, but it seems like

no one wants to teach me anything. How do I

make this situation a bit me-friendly?

— pratha roy, mahalaxmi

Dear pratha,

Aww! We sympathise with you. This is indeed a

very tricky situation to deal with especially if

you are an intern. However, from the many

experiences that we’ve heard of, this is how

most big publishing houses work. What you

could do is try to find some senior in the team

who seems friendlier. Get them to solve your

doubts and queries when they seem free. Or

you can ask them if you could come early or

stay back to get the hang of a few things. Show

that you’re eager to learn. Apart from that, for

the minor issues, try and figure it out from the

juniors in the team who have recently joined or

who are not quite so high up the hierarchy.

Mostly, they’ll be more empathetic to your

situation. As far as your supervisor is

concerned, you’ll have to be sweet to her since

you have no other choice.

I recently joined a start-up online portal as a

content writer. Apart from me, there’s just the

editor in my team and while she is not

unhappy with my work, she keeps taunting me

about not contributing in her discussions with

the co-owner of the portal. The problem is that

I don’t have enough knowledge about the

subject that they are discussing. Her taunts

are affecting my self-confidence. What can

I do?

— ameesha verma, khar

Dear ameesha,

The first thing that you should do is go up to

her and tell her your problem. Mostly, she will

listen to you and help you out. But, if she still

continues to taunt you, we have one question

for you — do you really need this job? If no,

then consider looking for another one. When

your boss is behaving in this way, there’s little

that you can do. She is a bad boss who can

never be a mentor. And keep in mind that no

job is worth losing your confidence. We’d

suggest you start looking at other options

immediately and move out.

ou broke up with yourboyfriend because hecheated on you. Youwere, quite obviously,

upset. But, you got over him. Somuch so, that you told yourfriends that you were glad thatsomeone else came into his lifebecause he wasn’t worth it.However, a bright, shiny day atwork turns out to be the exactopposite when you realise thatthe new person joining yourteam is, you guessed it, the‘other’ woman. But weren’t youthankful for her a few monthsago? Not really. Now you not onlyhave to see her face each day,but work with her. Mastering thetactic of working with a personyou hate is tough. So, we tell you

how to deal with the situation...without getting arrested.

Face to Face

Have a straightforwardconversation about keeping yourpersonal lives personal. Tell yourenemy that you are open tocordial relations at work. It mightbe difficult for you, but you can’tjeopardise your career becauseof a phase that you have alreadymoved on from.

Don’t blur the line

By that we mean the linebetween your professional andpersonal lives. Just becauseyou’ve broken the ice, there’s no

need to be extra friendly orchatty. Don’t get into long-winding discussions with themand keep interactions strictlywork-related.

big picture

You might feel like quitting yourjob if this particular worker isbeing exceptionally nastytowards you. Don’t. Think aboutwhere you want to see yourselfin a couple of years and how thisjob would help you with that. And if you immerse yourself inachieving your personal goals, the subject of your hatred willhardly matter.

Don’t overreact

It is possible that the hatred youfeel towards your co-worker willhave you reacting to theirmistakes in a drastic manner;mistakes, which otherwise youwould’ve let go. Control thesefeelings and react to them as youwould to another co-worker.

Don’t bitch

Yes, we know how tempting it isto bitch about the person youhate, but refrain from doing so atwork. There are many timeswhen colleagues begin to enjoysuch situations and try to putyou in uncomfortable situationswith your nemesis while theygiggle on the sidelines.

be nice in general

Just smile or say a hello in themorning. It will just ease thebuilt up tension and make thingsa little smoother. Try being thebigger person and rise over pettyissues. You’ll feel better.

i coulDn’t care less

What if they are trying to driveyou up the wall intentionally?Adopt an I-don’t-care attitudeand observe how theirenthusiasm at putting you offfizzles out. The more you getannoyed, the more determinedtheir irritating attempts will get.

What if you have towork with a person youhate? If quitting yourjob is the first thoughtthat crosses your mind, then you’re doing itwrong. Priyanka Singhtells you how you candeal with thisunfortunate situation

He high-fives you when youmeet. He talks down to you. Heconsults you for every smalldecision or worst of all, he

expects you to clean up after him. Girl, your man needs to treat you like hisgirlfriend — not his buddy, child, motheror house help. We tell you how to dealwith the situation.

Hey DuDe

If hi-fives, back thumps and “hey dude”are part of your daily routine with yourman, then it’s safe to say that he thinksyou’re more buddy than babe. No matterhow laidback a girl is, if her ownboyfriend treats her like a bro instead ofhis girlfriend, it can spell trouble. If youdon’t put a stop to it now, he’s eventuallygoing to stop seeing you as his girlfriendand treat you like one of the boys. Andyou know what boys discuss, right? Othergirls they’d like as their girlfriend.

Grow up

Does your guy roll his eyes when you’remaking a point? Or take control of thedecision making in your relationship? Ifhe treats you like a child, you need tostand up for yourself. A relationship isabout partnering with an equal. If youfeel that he doesn’t take you seriously, you need to make him start doing so.Start by going out by yourself withoutconsulting him. Show him that you’re anadult who can take care of herself andlead her own life.

MoMMy iSSueS

Does he run to you for every single, littlething? Does he ask your permissionbefore he goes out? Sigh. We understandhow frustrating it is to be dating amama’s boy who thinks you’re hisreplacement mama. To get a hold of thissituation, you need to have a serious talkwith your man. Tell him that while youdo things for him out of affection, it’s notyour obligation to take care of hisemotional and physical needs. He needsto man up and grow up.

MAiD to MeASure

Once your man gets home, are yourunning helter-skelter making him asnack, getting him the newspaper andputting his dirty clothes in the laundry?Isn’t there no job less rewarding thanbeing your boyfriend’s full-time maid?We have three words for you, sister: Stopthis now! This is the simplest problem tosolve; just say “no” the next time he asksyou to do something he can easily dohimself. Doing things out of love (likecooking his favourite meal) is fine, but heneeds to be appreciative and pull his ownweight around.

GoDDeSS

Does he hang on every word you say?Can he not stop staring into your eyes?We know that we may sound like we arecomplaining, but a guy who treats youlike a queen can be a bit of a pest and hisextreme affection can be overwhelming. But, the good news is that it does not last— so enjoy it while you can, ladies!

Dear Grace,My boyfriend of a few months is a great guy

should I do?

Misha Singh, Andheri

Dear Misha,

What you should not do is break the mug.

Even accidentally. It’s not going to work

sweetie and you will come across as a

psycho lady. I doubt that your man picks up

the same mug every morning out of love for

his ex; it’s probably just a habit. However, it

seems that you have your doubts as your

get him a new mug. If he starts his day with

your mug, then you have your answer. If he

doesn’t, well, both of you need to talk.

Karvy Stock Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Gateway DistriparksCMP: Rs. 111 Target Rs. 160Event: Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) has bought 14.3% stake in GatewayDistriparks’ (GDPL) subsidiary - Snowman Logistics (Cold chain business) - fora consideration of Rs600mn. This deal values the subsidiary at Snowman atRs4.2bn. Analysis: Snowman issued 17 mn shares to NVP at Rs35 per share ofsnowman as part of the deal. GDPL owned 53% stake in this subsidiary beforethis transaction and in order to maintain its majority shareholding, Remainpositive on the stock; near term concerns remain: We expect GDPL’s 1HFY14Eprofitability to remain under pressure on account of the declining containervolumes at JNPT impacting its CFS cash-flows and 1-2 months further delay inits Faridabad ICD’s rail operations. However, the strong traction in the rail andthe cold chain businesses should offset the decline in CFS profitability in FY14E.We factor in EBITDA & PAT CAGR of 17% & 8% respectively during FY13-15Eperiods. We retain our “BUY” recommendation on the stock with a target priceof Rs160 per share valuing GDPL at ~12x its Sep’14 consolidated EPS.

Religare calls a ‘Sell’ on GSK ConsumerCMP: Rs. 5710 Target Rs. 4400We downgrade GSK Consumer from HOLD to SELL post the stock’s strongoutperformance and rich valuations (45.4x/38.6x CY13/14). The stock has

seen a massive re-rating post an open offer from theparent company; however, current valuations areunjustified as we don’t see any significantimprovement in growth rates over the medium term.We marginally upgrade earnings and revise ourMar’14 TP to Rs 4,400 (from Rs 3,875 earlier).

Stock re-rating post open offer by parent: Thestock has seen a significant re-rating after the parentcompany increased its stake in GSK Consumer from43.16% to 72.46%. The open offer price of Rs 3,900has reduced stock liquidity, ascribing it a scarcitypremium and leading to its strong outperformance

(up 50% YTD). We believe the current stock price factors in a possibledelisting by the parent company, which if it does, might happen atsimilar/higher valuations as compared to the open offer. However currentvaluations which are close to 20 year high are unsustainable, in our view.Downgrade to SELL with a Mar’14 TP of Rs 4,400: We marginally upgrade ourCY14/CY15 earnings by ~1-2% and our TP to Rs 4,400, valuing the companyat 28x Mar’15 earnings (average one-year fwd. P/E). Downgrade to SELL fromHOLD. Key upside risks to our call: (a) delisting of the stock by parentcompany at a premium, (b) significant increase in volume growth rates, and(c) a drop in input cost inflation leading to higher-than-estimated margins.

First Call Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Blue StarCMP: Rs. 164 Target Rs. 180Outlook and Conclusion: At the current market price of Rs. 160.75, the stockP/E ratio is at 10.89 x FY14E and 7.00 x FY15E respectively. Earning pershare (EPS) of the company for the earnings for FY14E and FY15E is seen atRs.14.76 and Rs.22.98 respectively. Net Sales of the company are expectedto grow at a CAGR of 4% over 2012 to 2015E respectively. On the basis ofEV/EBITDA, the stock trades at 0.62 x for FY14E and 0.59 x for FY15E. Priceto Book Value of the stock is expected to be at 2.76 x and 2.66 x respectivelyfor FY14E and FY15E.

The Company’s effort to drive margins through price increases, valueengineering, prudent working capital management and cost control coupledwith a focus on improving the quality of new orders and Launches WideRange Of Stylish Room Air- conditioners With Emphasis On Energy Efficiency, helped it return to profitability during the year. Apart from being energyefficient the Company also plans to promote its inverter line-up of residentialsplit air conditioners for the benefit of energy conscious customers. Therange of window air conditioners has also been enhanced with addition ofmodels specifically for the north India market. The Company intends tofurther enhance these efforts in order to sustain this performance over thecurrent year as well. We expect that the company surplus scenario is likely tocontinue for the next three years, will keep its growth story in the comingquarters also. While the external market environment continues to bechallenging, businesses such packaged air-conditioning, room airconditioners, refrigeration products and after-sales service have a positiveoutlook. So, we recommend ‘BUY’ in this particular scrip with a target priceof Rs. 180.00 for Medium to Long term investment

LOVIN’ IT UPDoes he really love me?Does my partner love me? Everything wasgoing fine between us but one day his cousincame in between us. They soon started writingromantic letters to each other. When Iprotested, I was told that I was wrong. He thencalled her up at midnight and spoke to her forfour hours. However he continued telling methat he loves me. Yet he keeps writing andspeaking to her. Does he really love me?Sometimes I doubt his intentions. Wheneverwe talk about it, we end up in a fight. What canI do?Your partner obvi-ously wants to havehis cake and eat ittoo. And this doesnot seem to be goingdown very well withyou. You have everyright to feel upsetabout his doublestandards and lackof care and commit-ment towards you.I think you should

be very explicit in your communication abouthow his actions make you feel.Talk about your feelings and ask him what

he is going to do about it. If he understands

what it is doing to you emotionally andmends his ways then it is alright. But if hetries to say that you should not feel this wayand that his actions are fine, or says thathe loves you and continues in the sameway, then get into couple therapy with himwith any good counsellor, or if he does notagree to it, then get out of the relationship atonce. You deserve better.

Anxiety about erectionI am a 26-year-old man and in love with mygirlfriend who is 25. We love each other a lotand would like to get married after a year. I re-frain from making sexual overtures with her, because I fear that I will not be able to have anerection. This is affecting our relationship ad-versely. Please help me.Anxiety about impotence ranks first in order

of prevalence, in all the sexual fears that menhave. Ironically, the fear itself is the greatestcause of impotence. In 90% cases of impoten-cies, the cause is stemming from the mind (psy-chogenic). It is only in 10% cases that the causeis biological.Just as it is not possible to make saliva, tears

and digestive juicesflow, similarly thereis no possible way aman can ‘will’ him-self to have an erec-tion. These thingshappen on their ownin response to situa-tions and circum-stances. If oneinvolves oneself in‘relaxed’ foreplay, without ‘spectator-

ing’ at the organ (waiting for the erection to hap-pen), the erection happens on its own accord.Behind the fear of failure to get an erection is afundamental anxiety – the fear of being re-jected. The partner’s patient understandingand co-operation plays a very important role ingetting over such psychogenic impotence.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier SPORTSAnand loses to Carlsen in Tal Memorial

MOSCOW: Indian chess starViswanathan Anand suffered ashock loss to next World

Championship challenger MagnusCarlsen of Norway in the fifth roundand slipped to the joint seventh spot inthe Tal Memorial Tournament here.Playing the last classical game

against Carlsen ahead of the WorldChampionship match scheduled inChennai in November next, Anandcould not find any suitable plan andwas outplayed by the youngNorwegianinwhat could be termed as a rudewakeup call for the Indian world champion.Boris Gelfand of Israel joined Hikaru

Nakamura of United States in lead on3.5 points after winning his secondgame in the tournament at the expenseof Alexander Morozevich of Russia.WhileNakamura played his first draw

in the tournament sharing point withDmitry Andreikin of Russia the moststriking thing known past the half waystage is the fact that the four Russianparticipants are yet to score a victory inthe tournament. With Gelfand andNakamura in front, Carlsen andMame-dyarov are close behind on three pointseach. Andreikin and Fabiano Caruanaof Italy share the fifth spot on 2.5 pointswhile Anand andKarjakin are joint sev-enth now on two points each.Lower down, the Russian duo ofMo-

rozevich and Vladimir Kramnik sharethe cellar with 1.5 points in their bagright now. While the focus of the worldstayed on the Carlsen-Anand game,Andreikin did well to keen Nakamurain check. The American had won threegames in a row andwas raring to go butwas denied any leverage by the best

performing Russian here.In other games of the day, Mamed-

yarov remained focused and drewwithCaruana while Kramnik played histhird draw in five games here splittingthe point with Karjakin. The day belonged to Carlsen who

was seen playing his last game againstAnand before the world championshipunder the classical time control.Explaining his opening choice by al-

lowing the Nimzo Indian defenseCarlsen said, "I thought I'd play a linethat he hasn't faced in a long time andI thought that hopefully hewouldn't betoo prepared for that."Anand was pushed to the wall right

from the early stages of the middlegame and Carlsen demonstratedwhite's advantage in no time. After the25th move, the Norwegian had nodoubt he was close to winning andwrapped up the game in quick time.Speaking about the impact of this

victory Carlsen was quite upbeat. "Ithink it's good before theWorld Cham-pionship match to remind him that Ican outplay him once in a while. Sinceobviously between us there have beena lot of draws, recently at least," he said."But I'm not going to go around andthink that he's going to have such a badday every day at the World Champi-onship. I'll have to prepare for theworst, definitely. Results round 5: Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 3)beat V Anand (Ind, 2); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 2.5)beat Alexander Morozevich (Rus, 1.5); HikaruNakamura (Usa, 3.5) drew with Dmitry Andreikin(Rus, 2.5); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 3) drewwith Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 2.5); VladimirKramnik (Rus, 1.5) drew with Sergey Karjakin(Rus, 2).

Smart Moves... Viswanathan Anand was shocked by Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fifthround in the Tal Memorial Tournament.

In the 70’s and 80’s you had to confronttwo forces – namely Prakash Padukoneand Syed Modi. How was it playing withand against them and how different wasthe atmosphere during that era?Prakash was the one who won nine nationaltitles in a row and I lost to him twice in thefinal. But he was also in the top three in theworld and the gap between him and rest of theIndia was very wide, there no chance ofbeating Prakash whereas in the case of Modithough I beat him a couple of times, I couldnot beat him in the nationals.

Despite starting playing singles, whendid you decide on playing the doubles inthe long run?During my playing days, most of the playersplayed both because not only there weren’t anypeople to guide them but, somehow people feltthe only chance of international exposure wasbeing in the Indian team and if two players wereto be sent the chances of Prakash and Modysent was more. The only way of doing well inwas to do well in doubles and being numberone. Even though you were selected only fordoubles, you could play singles also and that iswhy for a long time I played both and I wishedthere was a coach to guide me so I could choseone and excel in that. Because playing twoevents used to take a heavy toll on mybody because by the time you reachedthe semis or the finals you had playedtwice the number of matches ascompared to Prakash or Mody.

Detail your experience as a coach?Indians don’t get professional coaching andthe gap between international players gettingfacilities as compared to India has becomeless because there are good coaches in India.Unfortunately, my academy has beenhandicapped because we don’t have anysponsors to support the programme. Theexpenses also have been quite heavy. Theresults we have produced have been due to mytotal involvement in coaching and also the factthat I have all the players in the academy whohave begun playing with me. I have groomedthem from the beginner’s stage to be nationaland international champions. The bondbetween me and my students is quite intense.

There has been a lull in India especiallyin the ability to create champions. Thegap between players creating a wideimpact on the scene is quite a lot. FromPrakash to Pullela Gopichand and now toSaina Nehwal. What according to you isthe reason for this?In the 40s we had Prakash Nathur [All Englandfinalist], the 60s gave us Nandu Natekar andSuresh Goel who were really among the best inthe world and then we had Prakash andGopichand. But a lot has changed not onlybecause of better facilities and coaching butalso due to the scoring format where Indianscan do well. This has made the game faster

where technique and temperament has comein to play where you see five men and threegirls are in the top 50. Nehwal has been thetorchbearer for the last five years.

In this era, we have seen considerablesuccess in the women’s arena ascompared to earlier times. How has thisshift occurred? To a certain extent I do believe the ladies

field is little weaker as compared to men’s. Awoman player can do far better in a shortertime as compared to their male counterpartsas the competition isn’t as intense as themen’s. Besides Saina, we have another starwho is doing well who is PV Sindhu and she isamong the top 15 in the world. In terms ofphysique, she is better blessed than Sainabecause she is almost 5 feet10” and she isonly 17. I think today, women from India are aforce to reckon with. Women are definitelycatching up with the men.

In the men’s circuit, your son Anand hasreached his career best ranking recently. Also Parupalli Kashyap and Ajay Jayaramhave played extremely well. How tough willit be for the boys to break in the top ten?Kashyap is already in the top 10, besides thatAjay is in the top 25. Then there is Guru Sai

Dutt, my son and Sai Praneeth, these five are really doing well. Itwill be really difficult for them toretain their position and they will

have to consistently do well. It a long periodbefore they can be compared to what Sainahas done. She has been in the top fivecontinuously for the past five years, which issomething commendable.

What do you think are the prospects ofthe Indian Badminton League, which hasbeen in the pipeline for a while now? This league will be helpful for the upliftment ofthe game in the country. If you have topplayers of the world playing in India, then manyyoungsters will get to watch them play at closequarters. Unless the Chinese are part of theIBL, it may not have the success what it islooking for.

How do you see your academy move onhere and what future do you see for yourson Anand Pawar?I have moved my academy to the GoregaonSports Club two year back, and we have courtsover here of international calibre. It has alsosignificantly boosted badminton which hasbeen played in the club. Anand has suffered alot in various aspects. When you are trainingunder different coaches until and unless youget personalized attention, you won’t progress. He has been with me for the last nine monthsand that has been working well for himbecause just a few weeks back he reached thesemifinals of a Super Series tournament. Sohis training in our academy has been the rightmove for him.

Former shuttler turned coach UDAY PAWAR has the rare knack of producing goodplayers for India on the badminton circuit. From being a seasoned campaigner of hisera and playing with shuttling greats like Prakash Padukone and Syed Mody, Pawar

gets candid with NEIL JOSHI as he speak about his early days to later taking upcoaching and nurturing talent who have created a mark on the internationalscene. He also talks about the progress of the women’s game in the country and

how well India has performed on the international scene.

TODAY’S MATCHSEMI-FINAL II

CARDIFF: Unbeaten so far, aconfident India would be up

against a massive challenge whenthey take on sub-continental ri-vals Sri Lanka, a team on the as-cendancy after a slow start, in thesemifinal match of the ICCChampions Trophy here today.India will be the fancied team

on paper but the Lankans are alsoon a high after defeating bothEngland and Australia en route tothe semifinal, which would be arepeat of the 2011 World Cup finalin Mumbai. While India were thefirst team to make the last fourfrom the tournament's Group ofDeath with an all-win record, SriLanka grabbed the last semifinalberth on Tuesday after wardingoff a late challenge from Australia. The 20-run win against the

Aussies at The Oval enabled theLankans to finish level on pointswith England, but an inferior run-rate pushed them to No. 2 andearned them a date with India at

the Sophia Gardens. For the Lankans, the clash

against India will be a grudgegame of sorts. In the final of the2011 World Cup at the Wankhede,India outclassed the co-hosts bysix wickets, easily chasing down a275-run target, with skipper Ma-hendra Singh Dhoni laying thecoup de grace with a towering sixoff Nuwan Kulasekara. While Sri Lanka have retained

the core of that 2011 World CupKumar Sangakkara-led squadhere at the Champions Trophy, the Indian team has seen an in-flux of new blood after SandeepPatil replaced KrishnamachariSrikkanth as chief selector in Sep-tember 2012. Only Dhoni, Virat Kohli and

Suresh Raina are the remnants ofthe victorious World Cup squadand the arrival of a set of preco-cious youths like Ravindra Jadejaand Shikhar Dhawan has had atelling impact on the overall team

performance, especially fielding. The Indians have been on song

ever since landing in the UK forthe Champions Trophy. TheLankans were the first to face theheat, losing a warm-up game inBirmingham on June 1.India flexed their batting mus-

cle, easily chasing down a 334-runtarget with five wickets in handand six balls to spare. Kohli andDinesh Karthik scored hundreds, virtually toying with a matureLankan attack, spearheaded byKulasekara and current skipperAngelo Mathews. India's battingdomination has been eloquentlyclear in this competition. Theyhave scored over 300 runs thricein five matches, twice batting first.Against the West Indies in a groupB fixture, India easily chaseddown a 234-run target with eightwickets in hand and in a rain-hitgame at Edgbaston, dismissed anoff-colour Pakistan by an identi-cal margin (D/L method).

Confident India take on resurgent Sri Lanka in CT semis

Bowlers take England toCT final; Proteas fail to

remove their ‘chokers’ tag

LONDON: An impressivebowling performance pow-ered England to the Cham-

pions Trophy summit clash as thehosts thrashed South Africa byseven wickets in the first semifi-nal.The hosts bundled out South

Africa for a meagre 175 after in-serting them in to bat and thencomfortably overhauled the tar-get with 12.3 overs to spare. Suchwas the domination of the Eng-land bowlers that AB de Villiersand Co found it difficult to buckthe trend of faltering in major ICCtournaments. It was complete team effort by

England as all the bowlers playeda part in demolishing the SouthAfrican top and middle battingorder. England had their rivals on

the mat as they had reducedthem to 80 for 8 at one stage andProteas owed their recovery tosome gritty batting by DavidMiller (56), who in the companyof tail-ender Rory Kleinveldt (43)added 95 runs for the ninthwicket in 16 overs.James Anderson (2/14) and

Steven Finn (1/45) excelled withthe two new balls and were dulycomplemented by Stuart Broad(3/50) and off-spinner JamesTredwell, (3/19). England losttheir openers early but JonathanTrott (82 not out) and Joe Root(48) batted with clam and assur-ance to lead the hosts to the fin-ish line. They shared a 105-runstand for the third wicket.Trott paced innings well as he

batted cautiously initially andstarted playing strokes once itwas sure that England had

reached a safe position. Itis second time that Eng-land have qualified forthe Champions Trophy

final. The last time they fea-tured in the final was in 2004.That time also they had hostedthe event and ended runners-upto the West Indies.England will now play the win-

ner of tomorrow's semifinal be-tween World Champions Indiaand Sri Lanka in the summit clashon June 23 at Birmingham. SouthAfrican bowlers did a decent job, specially spinner Robin Peterson, but England had the luxury ofwickets with a small target athand. Proteas removed openers Alas-

tair Cook (6) and Ian Bell (20)early but Trott and Root did notallow South African to seize themomentum. They batted with alot of responsibility as theywaited for loose deliveries. Trott'sknock came off 84 balls with 11boundaries while Root helpedhimself with seven shots to thefence in his 71-ball knock. By thetime Root JP Duminy dismissedRoot, England were inches fromthe win.Earlier, South Africa scripted a

remarkable late recovery as theywere down in the dumps at 80 foreight at one stage but managed togive their bowlers something tofight for. Miller's unbeaten half-century and Kleinveldt's fightingknock provided some semblanceof respectability to the total.Miller's innings off 51 balls con-tained five fours and two sixes ashe launched a swift counter-at-tack with an able ally in Klein-

veldt who also didn't get boggeddown by the reputation of theEnglish bowlers. The SouthAfrican pacer hit four boundariesand a six.Brief Scores: South Africa 175 allout in 38.4 overs [David Miller 56, RoryKleinveldt 43, James Anderson 2/14,James Tredwell 3/19] lost to England179 for three in 37.3 overs [JonathonTrott not out 82, Joe Root 48] by sevenwickets.
