The CKFR Board formally adopted an
organizational founding date of
June 22, 1942 many years ago. As
such, June 22nd
, 2017 will represent
our 75th year of service to the
community.
To recognize this milestone, Staff is
planning for the following activities:
We will develop a special CK
Weekly addition that focuses on
our 75-year history of service to
the community. This will include
an update on current programs
and projects with the intent to
distribute widely within our CKFR

We will develop methods to
acknowledge this milestone at
both our Kids Day event, Whaling
Days, and our County Fair Booth.
We will explore the development

might recognize this milestone,
please email EA Miller.

We have scheduled Chief Darrell
Taylor, from Bates Technical
College, for a meet and greet /
advising session at Station 41 on
May 11th.
If you are interested in obtaining
your Associates of Arts Degree
this is a great opportunity to talk
with the program advisor to get
your questions answered and
start the process.
Since Tacoma is a long drive
South you are now able to
complete the entire degree from

platform.
We currently have several
members attending Bates
Technical College and I have
heard nothing but positive
feedback.

Medical Center-Silverdale Expansion!
Great news! We learned today that Harrison’s Certificate of Need has been approved! My heartfelt thanks for your support of our CN application at the Public Hearing, via letters to the Department of Health, letters to the editor, and out in the community.
I am excited for our community’s future as we watch a new state-of-the-art facility emerge in Silverdale, a new outpatient clinic in Bremerton, and for the exceptional care we will continue to provide for years to come.

NOTICE: Central Supply on
Vacation May 20—June 5
From: Joseph Calkins Sent: Monday, May 01, 2017 3:11 PM
I would like to let you all know I’ll be on vacation from 5/20/17 to 6/5/17. Please order appropriately to get you through these weeks (Medical, Cleaning Supply). After that, please hold your orders until I come back and I’ll get it to you ASAP. If you absolutely need anything while I’m gone, please contact the Duty Chief or B/C Danskin. I will have a clipboard on my desk to fill out the equipment and bunker gear that was taken (please include the bunker gear serial number). If it’s uniforms, medical or cleaning supplies, please put the completed form on my desk. If you are returning anything, please place it in the rolling laundry basket at Central Supply so I can properly log it back in.
Thanks,
Joe (Your Supply Guy) Calkins

SHADOW DAYS
Olympic High School Shadow day is
hosted by CKFR every Spring at 41. It’s
organized through the East Bremerton
Rotary. Students learn about career
options in the fire service, run a “medical
call” and put on bunker gear, pull a line,
and practice forced entry.
THE YMCA
HEALTHY KIDS DAY
The Y Healthy Kids Day is an
annual event we attended on
April 29th. PIO, Volunteer
crews, and crews from 51
showed off the rigs, passed out
safety info, and Brown and
Stack even danced the YMCA
on stage!
THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA
CKFR currently has one (1) integrated
thermal imaging camera (TIC) that will be
rotated on SCBA packs between Stations.
If you get a chance, test it out and let Ken
Nilson know what you think. These would
be the first units to be put in service in
the State of Washington.

On May 12, 2015, an Amtrak train rounded a curve in Philadelphia at 106 mph. The train was on a curve
that was restricted to 50 mph or less. As the train entered the curve, the locomotive engineer applied the
emergency brakes.
In just a few seconds, the train, with one locomotive and seven passenger cars, derailed. A total of 245
passengers, 5 on-duty Amtrak employees and 3 off-duty Amtrak employees were on board; 8
passengers were killed, and 185 others were transported to area hospitals.
Of the 185 transported to hospitals, only 24 were taken to a hospital by an ambulance. The other 161
patients were transported by police cars and public-transportation buses. The Philadelphia police used
their “scoop and run” policy, which normally applies to shooting and stabbing victims.
Firefighters did complain in interviews to the NTSB that police cars had blocked access to the crash site
and that police had refused their request to triage patients. As a result of no coordination of patient
transport, some hospitals were overloaded with victims while others received no patients at all.

Speak up: What will you do in defining moments? Paul Thornton Wednesday, March 29, 2017
Source: http://exclusive.multibriefs.com/content/speak-up-what-will-you-do-in-defining-moments/business-management-services-risk-management
Defining moments are important situations that test a leader's commitment to his or her core beliefs and values. Author Robert Kiyosaki said that in these critical moments, "We become heroes or cowards; truth-tellers or liars; we go forward or backward."
These challenging situations require you to take a stand on difficult and sometimes controversial issues.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy," Martin Luther King Jr. said.
What you do or don't do in these critical moments reveals a lot about your character and credibility.
Defining moments often produce these reactions in people:
Self-doubt — Should I say what I'm thinking? Should I challenge the boss's proposal?
Fear and anxiety — Will I get fired? Will I lose friends? Will I be judged?
Hesitation — Maybe I should wait and see how things unfold. Leaders overcome their fears and anxieties, and they find the courage to stand up and do something.
Speaking up doesn't always place you in a favorable light. In some cases, half the people will support your idea and the other half may think you're irrational. Being a leader requires confidence, independence and grit. Leaders work hard to gain alignment with what they think, say and do.
