1994 brought to us in South Africa a new dawn, a new journey, it altered our footsteps, we walked to anew rhythm. Echoes and murmurs from the past are coming to us, reminding us of the discord of that time but we are intent on our new found song.

But we ask ourselves the question: are we free to tell our stories as artists, to shift boundaries? We are the new generations in Africa, but do we listen to each other?

As artistic director and curator of this year’s festival I curated a programme of works that reflects this contemporary urban Africa that is moving in time.

In its the twelfth edition, Afrovibes brings young pioneers and established talent in theater, dance, music and design from Southern Africa to the Netherlands, in a ten days festival. A festival program with current topical performances rooted in young urban Africa: raw, colorful, current, innovative. Afrovibes presents the dynamic cultural life of young urban Africa and connects with Dutch artists and audiences.

This year’s festival theme is focused on looking ahead, on ‘Moving in Time’, connecting past, present and future. Artists from Africa as well as from The Netherlands look forward in time, at possibilities to depart from existing norms and traditions. They look at our freedom to be curious, to ask questions about present and future, to explore the boundaries of freedom and expression. Are we free to say what we want and to go wherever we want?

We thank all our partners who made this festival possible. Together with them, we invite you to join us in twenty fresh current productions from South Africa, Kenya, Ivory Coast and The Netherlands.

F E S T I V A L 2 0 1 5Afrovibes brengt voor de twaalfde editie tien dagen lang jonge pioniers en gevestigd talent in theater, dans, muziek en design uit Zuidelijk Afrika naar Nederland. Een festivalprogramma met actuele voorstellingen uit het stadsleven van urban Afrika: rauw, kleurrijk, actueel, vernieuwend. Afrovibes laat het dynamische culturele leven van stedelijk Afrika zien én verbindt dit met Nederlandse kunstenaars en publiek.

Dit jaar staat het festival in het teken van vooruitkijken, Moving in Time, over verleden, heden, toekomst. Kunstenaars uit Afrika en Nederland kijken vooruit in de tijd, naar de mogelijkheid af te wijken van bestaande normen en tradities. Zij kijken naar onze vrijheid om nieuwsgierig te zijn, om vragen te stellen over het heden en de toekomst, om de grenzen van vrijheid en expressie te verkennen. Zijn er grenzen en wie bepaalt die? Ben je vrij om te zeggen wat je wilt en om te gaan waarheen je wilt?

D A N SHet is niet makkelijk vrouw te zijn in een door mannen gedomineerde samenleving als de Zuid-Afrikaanse, ‘It’s a mans world’. Met Page 27 brengt Lulu Mlangeni een eerbetoon aan de sterke Afrikaanse vrouw. De titel verwijst naar de leeftijd van Mlangeni, slechts 27 jaar. In 2010 nog winnaar So You Think you can Dance, nu al een van Zuid-Afrika’s meest opvallende danstalenten. In Page 27 danst zij met acht topdansers van Vuyani Dance Theatre uit Johannesburg: Zuid-Afrika’s meest gerenommeerde moderne dansgezelschap. Verwacht een adembenemende explosie van muziek, licht en dans.

It’s not easy to be a woman in a male-dominated society like South Africa’s, ‘It’s a man’s world’. With Page 27 Lulu Mlangeni pays tribute to strong African women. The title refers to Mlangeni’s age, only 27 years. In 2010 she was winner of the So You Think you can Dance competition, now she is one of South Africa’s most prominent dance talents. In Page 27 Lulu Mlangeni dances with eight top dancers of Vuyani Dance Theatre in Johannesburg: South Africa’s most renowned contemporary dance company. Expect a breathtaking explosion of music, shafts of light and dance, a flow of bodies in a diptych, featuring Mlangeni herself in the first part, and the Vuyani ensemble in the second part.

Eindelijk hebben we de Ivoriaanse choreografe Nadia Beugré naar Afrovibes kunnen lokken. Ze is voor het eerst te zien in Nederland met haar overweldigende dansvoorstelling Quartiers Libres. De voorstelling is een zoektocht naar persoonlijke vrijheid, waarbij zij de grenzen opzoekt van vrije expressie en meningsuiting. Een ademloze solo waarin Beugré, gekleed in een sexy jurk, rauw en energiek het podium in bezit neemt met danspassen als zweepslagen. Quartiers Libres draait om een cruciale vraag: uit welke openbare ruimten worden we verjaagd, welke straten durven we niet meer over te steken? De performance was een groot succes in New York, toerde door Duitsland en staat dit jaar zowel op het prestigieuze Festival d’Automne in Parijs als op Afrovibes 2015.

Finally we have been able to lure Ivorian choreographer Nadia Beugré to Afrovibes. First time in the Netherlands, with her stunning dance performance Quartiers Libres. The show is a quest for personal freedom, in which she explores the boundaries of free expression and free speech. Quartier Libres is a breathless solo where Beugré, dressed in a sexy lamé dress, takes over the stage in a raw and energetic way with dancing steps like whiplashes in a theatrical fusion of dance and performance. Quartiers Libres revolves around a crucial question: which public arenas do we find ourselves being chased away from? Which streets do we dare not to cross anymore? The performance was an immense success in New York, toured Germany and is this year both at the prestigious Festival d’Automne in Paris and at Afrovibes 2015.

Ze zijn jong, levenslustig en twee van Zuid-Afrika’s grootste urban danstalenten van dit moment: Grant van Ster en Shaun Oelf. Tijdens Afrovibes dansen zij twee stukken. In We Left verkennen vier dansers de complexe relaties tussen mannen: vaders, zonen, broers, vrienden en geliefden. Wat betekent mannelijkheid in een samenleving waar veel jongens geen vader (meer) hebben? Couched is een korte dansvoorstelling over mannenvriendschappen, de spanningen die daarbij ontstaan,de vreugde en verwarring. Soms ingetogen, soms explosief. Twee sensationele optredens waarin moderne, urban dance en Afrikaanse invloeden samensmelten.

D A N SThey are young, spirited and lively, two of South Africa’s largest urban dance talents: Grant van Ster and Shaun Oelf. At Afrovibes they present two dance performances. In We Left four dancers explore the complex relationships between men: fathers, sons, brothers, friends and lovers. What is the meaning of masculinity in a society where many boys and young men have no father (anymore)? We Left is a raw and direct choreography of body awareness, focused on young men. Couched is a short dance performance about male friendships, tensions arising from those friendships, the joy and confusion. Sometimes modest and subdued, sometimes explosive.

Two sensational dance performances in which contemporary urban dance and African influences fuse together in a direct urban style, acrobatic and playful. The dancers mesmerize audiences with their fearless jumps, leaps and paramount double work.

Who am I and who is the other? What are our habits and how do we judge them? In JONGA / KIJKEN those observations take shape in a contemporary shake of different dance cultures and dance styles. Key is the ever-present battle of the heart: the beat. A beat which at the end of the day is in all of us.

In a series of special meetings urban dancers and choreographers from South Africa and the Netherlands snoop and sniff each other. JONGA / KIJKEN is an encounter between dancers and choreographers of DOX from Utrecht and Jazzart from Cape Town. A fresh shake that mixes African dance styles with contemporary and urban dance forms.

Wie ben ik en wie is die ander? Wat zijn onze gewoontes en hoe oordelen we? In JONGA / KIJKEN krijgen die observaties vorm in een hedendaagse shake van verschillende dansculturen en stijlen. Rode draad is de altijd aanwezige slag van het hart: de beat. Die zit tenslotte in ieder van ons.

Tijdens een serie bijzondere ontmoetingen snuffelen dansers en choreografen uit Zuid-Afrika en Nederland aan elkaar. JONGA / KIJKEN is een ontmoeting tussen de dansers en dansmakers van DOX uit Utrecht en Jazzart uit Kaapstad. ‘Niets is zo krachtig als op het podium een verhaal vertellen dat men in het dagelijkse leven vermijdt’, schreef kunstcriticus Diane de Beer over The Line. Hoe kan je eigen buurman ineens je grootste vijand worden? Wanneer ga je de grens over van slachtoffer tot dader? In The Line neemt regisseur Gina Shmukler de gewelddadige aanvallen op migranten in Zuid-Afrika onder de loep. Shmukler deed interviews met slachtoffers en daders die betrokken waren bij deze aanvallen. The Line vertelt deze aangrijpende verhalen waarbij de actrices moeiteloos schakelen tussen de verschillende personages. Khutjo Green ontving in Zuid-Afrika een Naledi Award voor haar rol. Een spannende, confronterende voorstelling die stof tot denken geeft over onze eigen migrantendrama’s in Europa.

“Nothing is as powerful as to tell a story on stage that you like to avoid in everyday life,” art critic Diane de Beer wrote about The Line. How could your neighbor suddenly become your greatest enemy? When do you cross the border from being a victim to become a perpetrator? In The Line director Gina Shmukler takes the violent attacks on immigrants in South Africa under the microscope. Shmukler held interviews with victims and offenders who were involved in these attacks and uses their often inflammatory speech to create violent situations. The Line tells these moving stories in which the actresses effortlessly switch between the different characters, portraying the violence and isolation immigrants confront. Khutjo Green received a Naledi Award in South Africa for her role. A thrilling confrontational performance that gives food for thought about our own immigrant dramas in Europe.

Een groot succes op het Edinburgh Festival en nu te zien op Afrovibes 2015: de solovoorstelling Undone van Wessel Pretorius. Pretorius, hét gezicht van een nieuwe generatie nieuwe Zuid-Afrikaanse theatermakers, vertelt het verhaal van een jonge blanke Zuid-Afrikaan op zoek naar zijn identiteit in Zuid-Afrika. Zijn arrogante vader, afwezige moeder en egocentrische broer belemmeren hem in deze zoektocht. Pretorius schakelt vloeiend tussen de rollen van vader, moeder en broer in een mix van poëzie, komedie en bewegingstheater. Undone won vier Fiesta awards, de Standard Bank Ovation Award bij het National Arts Festival 2014 en een award voor beste acteur bij het Klein Karoo Festival.

A huge success at the Edinburgh Festival, this year at Afrovibes 2015: the solo performance Undone of Wessel Pretorius. Pretorius, the face of a new generation of South African theater makers, tells the story of a young white South African male who is in search of his identity in South Africa. His arrogant father, absent mother and egocentric brother impede him in this quest. Pretorius switches smoothly between the roles of father, mother and brother in a mix of poetry, comedy and physical theater. ‘We Are Here Cooperative’ verzorgt Normal Dinner, een exclusief, theatraal diner voor Afrovibes. Gedurende dit diner spelen vluchtelingen scènes uit hun voorstelling in wording: Normal Life. Verhalen over hun leven in Nederland, een leven zonder vaste woning of verblijfsvergunning. Hoe voelt het om je thuis achter te laten, om een nieuw leven op te bouwen, om continu opgejaagd te worden? En hoe leid je een ‘normaal’ leven? Tijdens het diner serveren de spelers gerechten uit het kookboek Wij Zijn Hier, Wij Koken Hier.

‘We Are Here Cooperative’ will host Normal Dinner, an exclusive theatrical dinner at Afrovibes Festival. At this dinner, refugees will perform scenes of their new production in the making: Normal Life. This performance tells stories about their life in The Netherlands, a life without a steady place to live or a permit. How does it feel to leave your home behind, to start a new life in a strange place, to continuously feel chased? And how can you live a ‘normal’ life? During this dinner the performers will serve meals from their cookbook We Are Here, We Cook Here.

We Are Here is een vluchtelingencollectief uit Amsterdam. Sinds 2012 protesteert het op verschillende manieren tegen de situatie van illegale vluchtelingen.

We Are Here is a refugee collective from Amsterdam. Since 2012 they use various ways of expressing their protest and creating awareness to fight for the rights of illegal refugees in The Netherlands.

Met het album Graceland uit 1986 maakte Paul Simon in één klap Zuid-Afrika’s belangrijkste muziekstijl Mbaqanga bij een groot publiek bekend. Dat Mbaqanga tijdloos is, bewijst Afrovibes-veteraan Joep Pelt. In samenwerking met Zuid-Afrikaanse musici waaronder Black Moses Ngwenya en rapper Zuluboy geeft Joep een nieuwe impuls aan de Mbaqanga met een album, documentaire en optredens. Tijdens Afrovibes 2015 een preview van deze samenwerking door Joep Pelt en Zuluboy. Verwacht een mix van Mbaqanga, hiphop, Kwaito en Afrosoul. En zoals bezoekers van vorige Afrovibes-edities weten: het dak gaat eraf! Mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Fonds Podiumkunsten.

Singer/ songwriter Gerson Main begon als muzikant bij grote hiphopnamen als Jayh, Lange Frans, Typhoon, Dio en Zwart Licht. Inmiddels is hij vooral bekend als de vrolijke, gemutste deelnemer van De beste singer/ songwriter 2015. Volgens Afrovibes was hij de overduidelijke winnaar van het programma. Met nummers als ‘Deejay’ en ‘Ik weet niet hoe’ zorgt hij zeker weten voor een luchtig zomerfeestje in een herfstig oktober.

Na Gerson een afterparty met Afrikaanse drums, diepe bassen en catchy melodieën van dj Owen Densa.

Singer / songwriter Gerson Main started as a musician with big hip-hop names such as Jayh, Lange Frans, Typhoon, Dio and Zwart Licht. Today he is best known as the cheerful, good humored participant in The Best Singer / Songwriter 2015 contest. According to Afrovibes he was the clear winner. With songs like ‘Deejay’ and ‘Ik weet niet hoe’ he surely brings us a breezy summer party in an autumnal October.

Ongerept is a changing improvisation collective formed around Kern Koppen, keyboard player / producer Wiboud Burkens and trumpeter Michael Varekamp. Jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, soundscapes and even hints of cabaret are all on board. Comfort zones get little room, no time for that: this is musically daring and completely outside the box. At Afrovibes with South African rapper Zuluboy.

Prior to the show in Nieuwe Regentes either a master with Zuluboy or the documentary ‘Finding Fela’.

Ongerept is een wisselend improvisatie collectief geformeerd rond Kern Kop-pen, toetsenist/producer Wiboud Burkens en trompettist Michael Varekamp. Jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, soundscapes en zelfs vleugjes cabaret passeren de revue. Comfortzones krijgen weinig ruimte: het is muzikaal gedurfd en volledig outside the box. Tijdens Afrovibes met Zuid-Afrikaanse rapper Zuluboy.

& HEMELBESEMMulti-talent rapper Hemelbesem is razend populair in Zuid-Afrika: hij wordt geboekt op elk mogelijk hiphopfestival- en feest. Hij brengt Afrikaans op een geheel nieuwe manier door poëzie, rijm en hiphop te versmelten. Afrovibes festival brengt een expositie met hedendaags grafisch werk, fotografie en illustraties van jonge ontwerpers uit Zuidelijk Afrika en Nederland. Deze expo geeft een beeld van jong, hip, actueel Zuidelijk Afrika, van het gevoel voor vernieuwing en artistieke expressie. Grafisch werk, murals en posters worden vaak gebruikt als politiek commentaar.Deze expositie laat het belang zienvan de rol van grafische kunst alsvorm van expressie, verzet en transformatie.

The Exhibition focuses on presenting new work from artists, illustrators, photographers working in graphic arts, photography, video and illustration. Graphic interventions as well as fly posters have been used widely as grass root medium for social and political commentary in South Africa and beyond. The exhibition will not only present new artistic work but also reflect on the history of graphics as an expression of resistance and transformation. The exhibition is curated by Cathal McKee.

Er was een tijd waarin mensen zich van de ene naar de andere plek bewogen zonder documenten en beperkingen, zoals vogels zich verplaatsen bij de wisseling van seizoenen. Bewegingsvrijheid en de worsteling van nieuwkomers met vreemde culturen vormen de thema’s in Inyoni Yezulu (De zwaluwen), het jongste project van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf Sabelo Mlangeni, één van de rijzende sterren van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotografie. Hij is te gast in de artist residence van Treehouse op NDSM. Tijdens Afrovibes zie je een selectie van zijn werk. Mede mogelijk gemaakt door Dienst Maatschappelijke Ontwikkeling van de Gemeente Amsterdam en ZAM.

There was a time in which people could move from one place to the other, without documents or constraints, just as birds immigrate when the seasons change. Freedom of movement and how newcomers relate and struggle in a new space are themes of Inyni Yezulu (The Swallows) the latest project by South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni, one of the rising stars in South African photography. During Afrovibes Festival he will be Artist in Residency at Treehouse in Amsterdam North NDSM. Made possible by DMO of the City of Amsterdam and ZAM.

Waarom wordt iemand paranoia en hoe gaan paranoïde waanbeelden in hun werk? Schrijver/ theatermaker Ogutu Muraya is student bij de opleiding DasArts en gefascineerd door het mechanisme van paranoia. In Nobody Knows My Name mengt hij echte gebeurtenissen met fictie door middel van storytelling, voice overs, film- en archiefmateriaal.

Fascinated with the mechanisms of paranoia Nobody Knows My Name is part of Ogutu’s first year research at DasArt- Master of Theatre Programme. Using different narrative techniques to stage archival material Ogutu interlaces fiction with true events. He draws out the suspiciousness, irrationality and conspiratorial fantasy that characterize the politics of paranoia.

Speciaal voor Afrovibes 2015 maken vier Zuid-Afrikaanse, Keniaanse en Nederlandse artiesten korte voorstellingen rondom het festivalthema Moving in Time.

Wat betekent het om man te zijn, om op te groeien van jongen tot man? De voorstelling Iets dat man heet is een universele vertaling van de zoektocht naar mannelijkheid. What does it mean to be a man, and to grow from boyhood to a man? The performance Iets dat Man Heet (Something Called Man) is a search for manhood. ‘Stand-up mime’ is what the Top Naeff Jury called the performance by Dianne Verwey. There is always a moment for improvisation and an open conversation between her and her audience. In VIER she collects personal stories from young people she worked with. Their intimate and often painful family stories that shape their lives and visions of the future. Verwey portrays family drama’s. VIER: tough yet vulnerable at the same time.

‘De kracht van haar voorstelling is de eerlijkheid, de tomeloze energie en het plezier. Ze heeft door de brutale mix van disciplines iets nieuws laten zien: ze heeft de stand-up mime uitgevonden.’ Dit zei de jury van de Top Naeff (aanmoedigingsprijs aan een veelbelovende student van de Theaterschool) over het spel van theatermaker Dionne Verwey. In VIER verzamelde Verwey persoonlijke verhalen van jongeren waar zij mee werkte. Hun intieme en meestal pijnlijke gezinsverhalen bepalen hun kijk op het leven en de toekomst. Likeminds, het huisgezelschap van het Frascati Theater, ademt de stad van haven tot poort maar vooral ook van jong, artistieke en culturele diversiteit. Suriname and The Netherlands, countries who share a love-hate relationship but are strongly connected. In Paramaribo-Texel, actors Leny Bredeveld and Helen Kamerveen perform as two women crossing the ocean. One to Suriname and the other to The Netherlands. In their ‘coincidental’ encounter not only the relationship between both countries are made evident, it is a personal confrontation between the two women and themselves. After sold out performances at Oerol Festival and in Paramaribo, they will give us a teaser of their performance before touring the rest of The Netherlands.

Kunstenaar, dichter en programmamaker Quinsy Gario is net als 2014 gastheer van Afrovibes. Hij ontvangt het publiek in Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Den Haag en voert nagesprekken met de artiesten.

Fela Kuti, uitvinder van de Afrobeat en nagel aan de doodskist van het dictatoriale Nigeriaanse regime, stierf zeventien jaar geleden. Een Broadway-musical bezorgde hem postuum wereldfaam. Regisseur Alex Gibney verfilmt de reis van musical naar Lagos in Finding Fela: een documentaire over West Afrika’s grootste muzikant/politiek activist aller tijden. In De Nieuwe Regentes een avondvullend programma met film en muziek uit Afrika, met o.a. een vertoning van de documentaire Finding Fela in samenwerking met DNR Filmclub in Den Haag. Aansluitend een muziekoptreden van Ongerept met Kern Koppen en Zuluboy.

Fela Kuti is inventor of the Afrobeat, who paid a high price to speak out against dictatorship in Nigeria and who died seventeen years ago. A Broadway musical gave him post mortem world fame. Director Alex Gibney uses the journey of this musical to Lagos to create a portrait of West-Africa’s greatest musician / political activist. The documentary is presented in collaboration with DNR Filmclub in The Hague. After the documentary Finding Fela there will be a music performance by Ongerept with Kern Koppen and Zuluboy.
