ESPN Posts Picture of 'White Michael Vick';
Calls Game "African-American"
ESPN knew what it was
doing when it made it's
NFL preview issue cen-
ter around Michael
Vick.
But did it go too far
when it posted the
above picture? The arti-
cle attached to the picture was recently taken down by
ESPN, which wrote an article discussing whether or not
the backlash Vick received would have been different if he
were white.
The photo, while maybe done in poor taste, is not quite as
bad as the Allen Iverson debacle at the beginning of his
career, where his tattoos were airbrushed off. In all reality,
it was just an attempt to do something clever and differ-
ent- and maybe drum up a little media attention.
Clearly ESPN must be getting backlash from it, as they
have removed it within hours of putting it up.
In addition, check out this passage from the article, where
Vick's playing style is described. All of that is why, to me, Vick
seems to have a deeply African-American approach to the
game. I'm not saying that a black QB who stands in the pocket
ain't playing black. I'm saying Vick's style is so badass, so artis-
tic, so fluid, so flamboyant, so relentless -- so representative of
black athletic style -- that if there were a stat for swagger
points, Vick would be the No. 1 quarterback in the league by
far. So the question is clear: Was ESPN wrong for posting
a picture of Michael Vick as white? Is the story in general
out of line?
