Training We have developed a

bilingual training plan which allowed us to run 10 training events in the past 12 months.

In 2006, the training plan (on our website) now includes a full day of IPv6 hands on training.

We now have CBT material in English and French available on CD and online (EN).

Financial health We can say that the we are working hard to

achieve our full sustainability after the two year incubation period. The objectives were among others: to ensure one full year operation budget reserve

by the end of the incubation period . we will achieve about 60% by the end of 2006

To put in place good governance processes to ensure sustainable growth. Organizational and control processes in place and

accounts regularly audited)

Minimize taxes: Got Tax exemption from Mauritius Government

WSIS and IG AfriNIC has become a sector member of ITU-D to be able to

better participate in Internet governance related discussions in our region and raise awareness among Policy makers in this area.

Participate to all preparatory meeting in Africa Contribute to Africa common position (especially on IG) AfriNIC identified as one of the ARAPKE projects partner We have been able to represent the NRO at the ITU reform

consultation meeting in Geneva and participate to the WTDC meeting in Doha and participate to ITU-D WSIS follow up discussions.

Participate to the African Regulators Forum where AfriNIC’s presentation and intervention led to recommendation from the forum (Res.08) calling on the regulators to play a facilitator role in Internet governance issues and increase their participation to Internet governance existing fora.

Now we have to follow the discussions related to the IGF, where AfriNIC and LACNIC are honored to have their CEOs (Myself and Raul Echeberia) appointed as member of the Meeting Advisory Group.

Other projects Beside our core activity which is Internet resource

management we are working on some other projects of interest for the community: MyAfriNIC: a portal to allow LIRs to easily interact with

AfriNIC and manage their resources. Routing Information and statistics: A tool to evaluate

the routing status of resources allocated by AfriNIC and overall statistics on Internet resources in our region

Activation of AfriNIC IRR (by second quarter 2007) Internet Resource Certification (RFC 3779): Setup of

CA for resource certification (used along with the IRR for S-BGP and other authenticated peering agreement)

So… It clearly appears from above that something has

changed since 2004. Due to:

More awareness among Operators across the region Proximity of the RIR … Growth in Internet Business in Africa

We now need to support these positive achievements by strengthening the organisation structure and our policy development process.

The community participation in policy development is key to RIR success.

… where from here? While it seems like things are moving, we still have

some challenges facing us as a young organisation and also as a community:

Awareness and cooperation, work still needs to be done towards the stakeholders (public/private sector and civil society).

Increase participation to our own policy development process.

Strengthen the organization’s structure to handle the growth efficiently

Further we need to increase our contribution to Internet development by supporting Research and Infrastructure Initiative (in the limit of our resources)
