AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY AT A GLANCE

Our Mission African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks to transform Africa by developing and supporting future generations of African leaders. Opening in 2008, African Leadership Academy will bring together 250 of the most promising 15-18 year old leaders from all 54 African nations for an innovative two-year program designed to prepare each student for a lifetime of leadership on the continent. Students will be selected to attend the Academy based on merit alone and will complete an innovative curriculum with a focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, and African studies. ALA graduates will attend the world’s finest universities and will return to lead Africa toward a peaceful and prosperous future. ALA is a nonprofit institution located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our Team African Leadership Academy was founded in 2004 by Fred Swaniker, Chris Bradford, Peter Mombaur, and Acha Leke. The founding team brings considerable experience as educators, entrepreneurs, consultants, and corporate executives in Africa and throughout the world. Our Advisors and Board Members consist of internationally-recognized luminaries in business, leadership development, secondary education, and social entrepreneurship. These include Isaac Shongwe, Chairman of the African Leadership Initiative in South Africa, Futhi Mtoba, Chairwoman of Deloitte & Touche South Africa, Sir Sam Jonah, formerly President of Anglogold Ashanti, Kim Smith, Founder and Executive Chairman of NewSchools Venture Fund; Jon Cummings, Director at McKinsey & Company; and Ralph Townsend, Headmaster of Winchester College (UK). ALA is assembling a larger network of like-minded mentors, partners, and leaders to provide alumni with the long-term support system needed to lead Africa toward equitable and lasting development. Our Success • In June 2005, ALA launched a pilot summer program that enabled us to test and improve our

concept and curriculum. By August 2006, more than 170 young leaders from 25 countries had participated in this innovative pilot program.

• In June 2006, co-founders Fred Swaniker and Chris Bradford were named Echoing Green Fellows and described as two of the “15 best emerging social entrepreneurs in the world.”

• In February 2007, Christopher Khaemba, widely recognized as one of Africa’s top educators, was hired to serve as the inaugural Dean of the Academy.

• In March 2007, ALA secured a loan of US $1 million from the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa, and became the first nonprofit organization to receive financing by the IDC – a testament to our long-term viability and good governance.

• In April 2007, ALA secured a state-of-the art campus in the outskirts of Johannesburg to serve as the home of the institution.

• In May 2007, ALA began recruiting its first class of 100 students from throughout the African continent.

Your Role African Leadership Academy offers like-minded individuals, organizations, and alumni a growing global network of local chapters and strategic partnerships committed to fostering our vision. KEY MILESTONES ACHIEVED TO DATE May 2006: Global Acclaim for our Innovative Model African Leadership Academy co-founders Fred Swaniker and Chris Bradford were named “2 of the 15 best emerging social entrepreneurs in the world” by Echoing Green. The Echoing Green Fellowship, which had 950 applicants from 75 countries, includes $98,000 in financial support over two years.

September 2006: First Pieces of Unique Curriculum Published Our unique curriculum in Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and African studies will be at the core of the Academy experience, and its design has been a key focus area. One particularly exciting development was the publishing of the first ALA entrepreneurship case study in September 2006. The case learning program is designed to inspire and prepare students for a lifetime of leadership on the continent.

Wanja Michuki, case study subject

February 2007: Christopher Khaemba Named Inaugural Dean After a nine month search, Christopher Khaemba, Principal of Kenya’s Alliance High School, was selected as Dean of the Academy. Mr. Khaemba is widely recognized as one of Africa’s leading educators, and he annually sends many of his students – from all backgrounds – to the world’s leading universities. ALA could not have found a more suitable candidate to lead its day-to-day operations. March 2007: IDC Approves $1 Million USD Loan to ALA After a year-long due diligence process, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa approved a $1 million USD (R7.2 million) low-interest loan to ALA to finance equipment purchase and operating costs. ALA is the first nonprofit organization ever approved for such a loan by the IDC, a financial institution established to promote economic growth in South Africa.

May 2007: Donations to ALA top $1 Million USD African Leadership Academy has secured $1 Million USD in financial and in-kind contributions to cover its pre-launch operations, equaling half of the total sum of ~$2 million USD required to fund pre-launch costs for developing curriculum, recruiting students, and hiring faculty. Donated funds originate primarily from high-net worth individuals around the world.

June 2007: World-Class Campus Unveiled African Leadership Academy’s state-of-the-art boarding campus is situated approximately 30 minutes northwest of Johannesburg. The campus has initial capacity for ~200 boarding students and includes a 350 seat auditorium, computer laboratories, sports fields, a faculty common room, and a beautiful house for the Dean and his family.

PROFILE OF CHRISTOPHER S. KHAEMBA DEAN OF AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Dean Christopher S. Khaemba, 47, was previously Principal of Alliance Boys’ High School on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. In 2006, Alliance was the highest performing school in Kenya on the KCSE secondary school examinations. A former military officer and physics teacher by training, Chris has served as a school leader for the past 12 years. Chris began his career as a Mathematics and Physics teacher at Alliance High School in 1984 after leaving his position as an officer in the Kenyan Air Force. Over the next fourteen years, Chris served in positions of increasing importance, including Housemaster, Careers Master, Senior Master, and Deputy Principal. In these positions, he guided curriculum implementation, coordinated university placements, and led a variety of co-curricular activities.

In 1995, Chris was called by the Kenyan government to lead Friends School Kamusinga, a once highly-regarded school that had slipped to 138th position on the Kenyan league tables. In just three years at Kamusinga, Chris implemented reforms that enabled substantial gains in academic and co-curricular performance, and when Chris left in 1998 the school was ranked among the top ten schools in Kenya. His successor at Kamusinga, Simon Nabukwesi, notes that when Chris arrived, the school had heavy debts, dilapidated facilities, and poor performance in both academic and co-curricular activities. Chris’ impact has been sustained, and in 2006 Kamusinga remained ranked 8th among all schools in the country. For his work at Kamusinga, Chris received the Distinguished Service Medal from the President of Kenya. Having proven his leadership ability at Kamusinga, Chris was asked by the government to take over the Principalship at Alliance High School in 1998. In his 9+ years as Principal at Alliance, Chris has steered the school back to 1st position in the national academic rankings and has expanded enrollment by 25%. He raised $500,000 USD from private donors to construct and renovate Alliance facilities, and he has dramatically increased scholarship allotments for Alliance students from poor families. As one Alliance governor wrote, Chris brings “indefatigable energy and commitment” to his role. Despite his myriad commitments as Principal he finds time to teach a math class each semester, and each Saturday he holds a “Principal’s Talk” with the full student body. He has traveled extensively in vacation periods to raise the profile of the school, establishing exchange programs with schools in the UK and USA and building deep relationships with colleges and universities overseas. For several years running, Alliance has successfully placed 20-30 boys from a wide variety of backgrounds into Ivy League universities in the United States. Chris has received a written commendation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology four times. One such commendation reads: Each year we ask students to share with us the name of a teacher who has been especially influential in the student’s development. We congratulate you on being named again this year by John Gachora Mburu. More importantly we thank you for the time, patience, expertise, love, discipline, and all the other qualities which have had such an important impact on your students. You do the work from which we all benefit.”

AFRICAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CURRICULUM Designed to Prepare Africa’s Future Leaders African Leadership Academy is developing a unique curriculum that will prepare each student for a lifetime of leadership on the African continent. The ALA curriculum will combine a world-class academic core with an innovative curriculum in leadership, entrepreneurship, and African studies. The Academic Core The academic core at ALA combines broad interdisciplinary study in the first year with deep exploration according to individual interests in the second year. ALA faculty will challenge students to see linkages across disciplines and to apply their knowledge as young African leaders. Students in an ALA English course will gain perspective on the African experience by discussing the writings of Wole Soyinka or Steve Biko, while students studying electromagnetic waves in an ALA physics course will not simply learn to regurgitate wave properties for an exam but will also discover how entrepreneurs used microwave technology to create Africa’s world-class mobile phone infrastructure. Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and African Studies The curriculum in leadership, entrepreneurship, and African studies will prepare each ALA student to confront the most pressing challenges on the continent. In the interdisciplinary African studies curriculum, students will understand the context for pressing challenges including hunger eradication, health care provision, economic growth, and conflict resolution. In the entrepreneurship curriculum, each student will develop the foundation to design innovative solutions to these challenges and find the inspiration they need to turn an idea into action. Finally, the holistic leadership curriculum will prepare each student to confront the challenges of leadership as they implement their solutions and become agents of positive change on the African continent. The Culminating Service Project The Culminating Service Project is the capstone experience in the ALA curriculum, allowing each student to synthesize and put into action the knowledge and skills gained over two years on campus. Each student will consider how they want to have impact on the continent and will then design, implement, present, and reflect on a culminating service project that has lasting positive impact on an African community.
