African and African American Studies In addition to satisfying the Aims of General Education, the African and African American Studies Program seeks to assist students in meeting the following learning goals and associated student learning outcomes*: Learning Goal 1: Demonstrate knowledge of the major developments in African and African American
people’s experiences.
Learning Outcome 1.1: Describe the major social, cultural, and political movements throughout the history of African and African American people’s experiences;
Learning Outcome 1.2: Trace the development of African civilizations and examine their
contributions to the development of the continent and major world civilizations;
Learning Outcome 1.3: Identify major figures in African and African American culture and
explain their impact on their societies and beyond; and Learning Outcome 1.4: Describe and analyze the experiences of people of African descent in all
parts of the world, but especially in the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa.
Learning Goal 2: Analyze information critically using African and African American studies’ theories
and concepts.
Learning Outcome 2.1: Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data; Learning Outcome 2.2: Use data to explain the impact of societal, economic, and political
factors on the experiences of people of African descent; and Learning Outcome 2.3: Compare and contrast different theories and research methods that
have been used to explain the experiences of persons of African descent.
Learning Goal 3: Communicate effectively in oral and written form about their knowledge of key concepts in African and African American studies.
Learning Outcome 3.1: Demonstrate knowledge of research techniques, evaluation of
evidence, documentation, organization, style and mechanics of writing appropriate to the discipline;

Agriculture and Natural Resources In addition to satisfying the Aims of General Education, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Program seeks to assist students in meeting the following learning goals and associated student learning outcomes: Learning Goal 1: Knowledge Base of Agriculture and Natural Resources Learning Outcome 1.1: Know and understand scientific facts and principles pertaining to soils, plants, animals, economics, and ecology. Learning Outcome 1.2: Have the ability to apply those facts and principles to the management of agriculture and natural resources systems. Child & Family Studies The Child and Family Studies Program introduces students to the umbrella profession of family and consumer sciences, with a particular emphasis on the specialized areas of child development, family studies, and nutrition and food studies. The program supports learning outcomes that (a) promote a comprehensive body of knowledge, skills, and attitudes/thinking about human development, with a particular emphasis on children and families; (b) foster more informed decision‐making about health and well‐being and the development of positive relationships; and (c) help CFS majors develop skills in the effective uses of resources to assist children, adults, and families in improving their quality of life. They have internalized the software design and development process, and it has become a “habit of mind” which they can apply in new situations. Students will have a fundamental understanding of how markets work and of their importance. Using appropriate technology and quantitative methods, students will be able to clearly state problems and engage in the research process. Learning Outcome 1.1: Develop an understanding of the theories of the discipline and the ability to appropriately apply them. Learning Outcome 1.2: Demonstrate technical competency in functional areas. Learning Outcome 1.3: Select and use appropriate functional area tools and techniques, including proper use of quantitative methods, as well as mathematical and statistical tools. Physics Mission The Physics program offers a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum that is designed to (a) prepare students to enter graduate schools or private industry en route to careers as professional physicists; (b) to provide a liberal arts degree to students who are interested in careers for which a background in physics is advantageous, such as engineering, medicine, computer science, and secondary science teaching; and (c) to provide service courses for majors in other sciences, including chemistry, pre‐medicine, technology, and agriculture. Our courses introduce students to the nature of scientific inquiry, grounded in problem solving that calls on both practical and quantitative reasoning skills. We are committed to the idea that students should conduct research as part of their undergraduate curriculum, both on campus and at other research institutions.

Theatre and Film In addition to satisfying the Aims of General Education, the Theatre and Film Program seeks to assist students in meeting the following learning goals and associated student learning outcomes: Learning Goal 1. Gain a broad knowledge of theater history in its physical and literary forms.
Learning Outcome 1.1: Demonstrate the ability to develop, discuss, and defend informed judgments about theatre; Learning Outcome 1.2: Demonstrate knowledge about global world theatre history and dramatic literature, including exemplary works and genres. Learning Outcome 1.3: Articulate an appreciation for the cultural and historical context of global theatre history and dramatic literature.
Learning Goal 2. Develop an appreciation of the principal theatrical eras, movements, and playwrights and the defining characteristics of theatrical genres and styles.
Learning Outcome 2.1: Interpret dramatic texts and critique theatrical performance using appropriate critical language and analytical frameworks appropriate to specific theatrical genres and styles; Learning Outcome 2.2: Articulate an understanding of the role of theater in culture, society, and national identity, and how each shapes the other over time; Learning Outcome 2.3: The ability to describe and situate the principal eras, genres, styles, and forces shaping theatre repertoire, and the ability to articulate the ways in which these both shape and are shaped by the larger artistic and cultural forces of the day.

Women’s and Gender Studies In addition to satisfying the Aims of General Education, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program seeks to assist students in meeting the following learning goals and associated student learning outcomes: Learning Goal 1: Thinking critically about gender, patriarchy, and interracial feminism
Learning Outcome 1.1: Critically examine assumptions about gender in scholarly, popular, public, and interpersonal discourse.
Learning Outcome 1.2: Employ theoretical paradigms and interpretive strategies with regard to
gender and race. Learning Outcome 1.3: Demonstrate a critical understanding of patriarchal social systems,
including the systemic devaluation, and subordination of women. Learning Outcome 1.4: Distinguish between the many understandings of the term “feminism,”
as diversely employed in various generic and historical contexts. Learning Goal 2: Hone writing and research skills for interdisciplinary gender analysis.
Learning Outcome 2.1: Utilize writing as a critical and interpretive tool of gender analysis. Learning Outcome 2.2: Construct essays on issues relevant to the study of women and gender
that utilize multiple styles of reasoning and pluralistic methods of argumentation appropriate to the discipline.
Learning Outcome 2.3: Conduct formal and informal gender research utilizing a variety of
