OUR FOOTY RECORD | GRAND FINAL EDITION

Cover Picture: Courtesy The Advocate and The Mercury Newspapers. Design: Brearne Ollington Flying Colours.

Welcome to the Wrest Point State League Grand Final Souvenir CLUB RECORD. This is of course the final edition for season 2012.

Well after a successful fourth season the premiership race culminates with the game we have all been waiting for and what better Grand Finale than a clash between this years dominant team and current competition title holder at Aurora Stadium to decide who will earn the title of Tasmanias premiership football team for 2012.

The game itself looks set to be another classic between these arch rivals. Burnie Dockers and Launceston Blues are meeting in a Grand Final for the 3rd time in their history and the second consecutive encounter in the Tasmanian State League decider. Back in 2008, in the Northern Tasmanian Football League, the Clubs met in a classic regional Grand Final which was won by the Blues by 13 points and allowed them to claim a 3rd consecutive title in that competition. Last year the Blues again prevailed by a more comfortable 44 points.

Up until 2011 the Blues and Dockers had not tasted state premiership success for many years. Old Dockers supporters will have fond memories of their predecessor Club, the Cooee Bulldogs, lifting the state title in 1978 when they defeated Sandy Bay at West Park. While Launcestons 2011 win was the first at state level for the Club since 1938, a double at this level would also replicate the achievements of the depression era Blue boys who took the 1937 and 1938 state premierships.

So who will it be in 2012? Will it be Burnie who can carry their season long form through to the Premiership and in doing so rise from the ashes of their defeat in 2011. Or will the Blues bounce back from all the challenges that have been thrown at them in 2012 and not only win back to back titles, but also place themselves amongst the greatest teams that Launceston has ever produced. The answer will soon be known.

In this edition we have produced a special feature of all the players lining up for the Dockers and Blues in the 2012 season decider. We have an extended feature of the Colts Grand Final between Launceston and North Launceston and also our look at the The Season That Was - 2012. In keeping with the focus of the Club Record we have also prepared a feature page for all 10 Clubs to round out their year. Finally, there are plenty of other great articles to keep all football fans reading when there is a moments break on the field.

Best wishes to all teams who are representing their Clubs and communities and have an enjoyable Grand Final day at the footy.

Welcome to the 2012 Wrest Point State League Grand Final.

Today sees a re-match of the 2011 Grand Final with combatants Burnie Dockers and Launceston Blues once again vying for premiership glory and status.

The big question remains who will prevail in season 2012, can the Launceston Football Club go back to back or will the Burnie Football Club win its first premiership since the reintroduction of the State League back in 2009?

Due recognition needs to be given to the men at the helm of both football clubs. From the Burnie Dockers Coach, Brent Plant, and President, Peter Vincent, have done an outstanding job for this football club once again in season 2012. Brent Plant has led his team into successive Grand Finals, this speaks volumes of the processes Brent and his football department, along with Peter and his Board, have implemented prior and during the season. Well done to both Brent and Peter.

From the Launceston Football Club Coach, Anthony Taylor, and former President, John McCrimmon, along with incumbent President, Peter Anthony, have also done an outstanding job for their football club in season 2012. Anthony Taylor has certainly driven the group to achieve greater results and for the club to go participate in successive Grand Finals also speaks volumes of the processes that whole Blues football department, along with John / Peter and their Board have implemented. To reach the grand final while consolidating his playing group from 2011 needs to be applauded. Well done to Anthony and John / Peter.

The finals series in season 2012 has been an outstanding one to date and todays game will be no different. It will be an extremely close contest and if I had to predict a winner I would have to say Burnie by 17 points.

Best of luck to all the participating teams in todays Wrest Point State League Grand Finals where we have the Colts kicking off proceedings with Launceston Blues and North Launceston Bombers doing battle and then the big senior clash between the Burnie Dockers and Launceston Blues.

As General Manager of the State League I am extremely pleased with the progress of the competition to date, some of the key indicators that support this view are:

I must also take this opportunity to personally thank the 10 State League clubs that participate in the competition especially the Presidents, Club Managers, Football Directors and the band of tireless volunteers at clubs for their contribution to the competition in season 2012. One other final mention is to the media, I say thank you to all forms of the media for your outstanding coverage of the Wrest Point State League in season 2012.

My final message to all football followers in the state is that the State League is about to complete its fourth year with one year remaining on the current licence agreements and the competition will remain viable, sustainable and stand the test of time. To support this message we will be shortly offering licences to clubs for season 2014 and beyond as we undertake discussions with our Clubs centring on longer licence agreement periods of 10 years.

I hope all patrons that are attending the second Wrest Point State League grand final at Aurora Stadium have a very enjoyable experience watching the State League product.

Players from seven clubs have been named as the top ten vote winners for the 2012 Wrest Point State Leagues top award, the Tassie Medal, which will be announced by AFL Tasmania at todays Grand Final at Aurora Stadium.

The clubs still harbouring a hope that one of theirs will win the TSLs best and fairest award include Burnie, Lauderdale and South Launceston, each with two players in the running, while Clarence, Glenorchy and Launceston each have one.

While North Hobart has Zane Murphy in the top ten, he finds himself ineligible to win the Tassie Medal for the third year in succession, due to being suspended for a reportable offence during the season.

The winner will join the honour board alongside Kurt Heazlewood (2009), Brett Geappen (2010), Tim Bristow (2011).

Having seven clubs with players in the top ten for the Tassie Medal is a great reflection of the evenness of the Wrest Point State League, said TSL General Manager, Shaun Young.

The top 10 includes State League seasoned performers such as Luke Shackleton, Jason Laycock, Jaye Bowden and Jordan Harris along with a great array of young talent.

We congratulate all the players in the top ten on an outstanding season. Whoever wins will be worthy of the honour as the TSLs best and fairest player, and will rightly stand alongside past winners Kurt Heazlewood, Brett Geappen and Tim Bristow.

RECOGNISING TASmANIAS BEST AND FAIREST PLAyER

Shackleton named by media as states bestBurnies Luke Shackleton has completed a dominant home and away Wrest Point State League season by being named the 2012 RACT Insurance Player of the Year.

The Burnie Dockers co-captain finished the season with 30 votes, 3 clear of Glenorchys Jaye Bowden, with Burnie team mate, Jason Laycock, a further 15 back on 15 points.

AFL Tasmania Football partners, The Mercury, The Examiner and The Advocate, award the votes each week.

The RACT Insurance Player of the Year receives $2500 cash and a $2500 travel package.

Shackleton picked up votes in twelve games, including seven best on field performances, four two-vote performances and one one-vote performance, to join Clarences Jeromey Webberley (2009), Launcestons Scott Stevenson (2010) and Clarences Cameron Thurley (2011) as winners of the RACT Insurance award.

The former Tasmanian Devils and Collingwood listed player, has enjoyed his most consistent and injury free year of football since the inception of the TSL in 2009.

Shackleton is considered one of the toughest competitors of the on ball brigade in the

competition along with his versatility to go forward and become a goal sneak with 20 goals for the season.

Luke has had an outstanding season with consistent vote catching games spread evenly throughout the year, said State League General Manager, Shaun Young.

He was locked in a two way battle with only being one point clear after round 4 from team mate Jason Laycock until he opened up a commanding lead of ten votes up to round 10, until finally holding off a late charge from Glenorchys Jaye Bowden.

RACT Insurance CEO, Trent Sayers, believes Shackleton has won the respect of all involved in the Wrest Point State League.

On behalf of the RACT Insurance we congratulate Luke on an outstanding season to date, Sayers said.

He has clearly been one of the most prominent players in the competition this season and thoroughly deserves to be awarded the RACT Insurance Player of the Year.

It is also extremely pleasing from RACT Insurances perspective that a player from each region has now won the award.

We look forward to watching him play during the finals series. As a company we are extremely proud of our association with AFL Tasmania, the Wrest Point State League.

LAUNCESTON has the chance to make it back to back premierships and against the same op-position after storming home to defeat Clarence by eight points at Aurora Stadium on Saturday night.

While the Blues took the win, they did it the hard way after being incredibly wasteful early when they had complete control of the game. Launceston were dominant from the opening bounce yet could not find the gap between the big sticks despite numerous opportunities from close range. Launceston had full control of the midfield and it appeared as it brought its own Sherrin while Clar-ences defence was besieged but refused to surrender.

Veteran Roos defender Cameron Blight, in his last TSL game, had the big match up on Adam Derbyshire and used all his experience to keep a tight rein on the spearhead despite being beaten for pace by his younger opponent. The Blues had nine extra scoring shots in the first half and another three very gettable misses that failed to score at all but led by only 14 points at the long break.

It was a different Clarence that came out for the second half. With playing-coach Matthew Drury thrown into the middle, the Roos started to take control. They used a short kicking game with forwards pushed up the ground, allowing plenty of space for the small quick forwards in Trent Standen and Jack Boon to run into. Clar-ence kicked four goals to one and had the momentum at the last change.

When the Roos broke through the Blues press and Standen kicked his third to open the goal scoring in the final quarter, Clarence was out to a 14 point lead and seemed to be on way to a grand final spot against Burnie next Sat-urday. But this intriguing, hotly contested final had yet another twist. Seemingly on their knees, it was the Blues who rallied once more. Derbyshire led, marked and kicked truly for his second, then Corey Sheppard did exactly the same and suddenly the difference was back to less than a goal. All of a sudden it was the Roos under the pump and they faulted. At the 20 minute mark, Roos defender Tim Castle dropped a tough one-handed mark and his direct opponent, Sonny Whiting, swooped on the spillage, ran into an open goal and the Blues were back in front.

It was Blues ruckman Nathan ODonoghue who sealed the game as he got a toe-poke onto a goal line marking contest to end Clarences season. But ODonoghue will have a couple of nervous nights as he was reported for striking Standen dur-ing the third quarter and Launceston will need its No.1 big man desperately against the Dockers dominant ruckman Jason Laycock if Launceston is to win the TSL premiership for a second time.

So the Grand Final is a replay of 2011 with the same two teams, but this is a much different contest in so many ways. Whereas Launceston was the team that dominated 2011, it is Burnie which has been the top team for nearly all of 2012. This was best demonstrated in the second semi-final at West Park where the Dockers blew the Blues away on a windy day to cement their grand final spot, and forcing Launceston to reach the decider the hard way via the preliminary final.

As usual, Dockers ruckman Jason Laycock will be the deciding factor in todays finale. He torched the Blues single-handedly in the second semi, taking over 20 marks and kicking three goals. The only player even close to the physical capabilities of matching Laycock for the Blues, Nathan ODonoghue, was best afield in last years grand final for his job on the former Essendon follower. Luck-ily for Launceston, ODonoghue escaped with a three-match suspended sentence at the tribunal after pleading guilty to striking Roos Trent Standen.

The Blues will also have a couple of handy inclusions from the second semi final team. Spearhead Adam Derbyshire and captain Scott Stephens both missed that game with injury and will strengthen the Blues structure and goal-kicking potency in the final. However, it is in the middle where the Dockers may have the greater edge. With silver service from Laycock, Burnie co-captains Luke Shackleton and Kade Munday have dominated. Shackleton has not missed a game this year and is one of the favourites for this years Tassie Medal as the TSLs best and fairest player.

The Dockers have also got improvement from some of their less heralded players in Rudy Barrett, Dylan Smith, Shaun Knott and Claye Hardy. Burnie, already bristling with some of the state leagues biggest names, could be further bolstered by the return of former AFL players Andrew Lee and Russell Robertson. The big ground could be a factor, given Burnie has only played two games in a month and both of those were on the small West Park ground, but the Dockers have been the best year all team and should deservedly claim their first ever state league premiership.

2012OUR GREAT GAME | 2012 TEAm OF ThE yEAR ANNOUNCED

Burnie and Clarence have both had five players named in the Wrest Point State Leagues Team of the Year, an indication of why the two teams finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season.

Further reinforcing the Burnie Football Clubs outstanding season, its head coach Brent Plant was selected as Coach of the Year, while Lauderdales Darren Winter was named his assistant.

In naming the 22 players and coaching staff to receive Dream Team status, State League General Manager, Shaun Young, said it was no surprise that the Leagues powerhouse clubs in the 2012 home and away season had filled so many positions in the line-up.

The Team of the Year is the best of the best, so its no surprise that the players from the top teams have impressed the selection committee.

The Team of the Year, now in its third year, is based on selecting the best player for each position, as opposed to selecting the best 22 players in the League.

Lauderdale and Launceston were the next most successful TSL clubs, earning three places each, followed by Glenorchy with two players.

North Launceston, South Launceston, North Hobart and Devonport made up the remaining four positions while Hobart Football Club failed to gain representation.

RACTI Player of the Year, Burnie follower Luke Shackleton, was given the distinction of being named captain.

Another notable inclusion is the Mathew Richardson medallist (TSL rookie of the year award), Aaron McNab, who was named in the forward pocket.

Umpires also received recognition with Raymond Mee being named as the Umpire of the Year.

Young said that AFL Tasmania had no hesitation in continuing the Team of the Year, following widespread acceptance of the concept and the healthy public debate over selections.

The amount of comments we have received about last years Team of the Year is a definite indication that the Tasmanian football community wants a Team of the Year to be selected, he said.

It is a huge honour for each of the players and coaching staff to be named in this team, and every selection has been carefully considered in terms of what they have achieved over the entire home and away season.

OUR GREAT GAME | mATThEw RIChARDSON mEDAL

mATThEw RIChARDSON mEDAL - ROOkIE OF ThE yEAR ANNOUNCEDDevonport Football Club forward, Aaron McNab, has won the Matthew Richardson Medal as the rookie of the year, after a stellar season in the Wrest Point State League.

To be eligible for the medal, players must be under 23 years of age, have played less than 20 games at the commencement of the season in no more than two years of senior football.

McNab began his football career at Sheffield High School and then played Under 17s with the Latrobe Football Club in 2009.

The next year he moved to the Devonport Football Club to play State League football and was then picked in the Tassie Mariners squad in 2011.

Aaron was highly regarded by the Mariners coaching panel led by head coach Matthew Armstrong and was always known for his football ability.

McNab is a highly respected player at the Devonport Football Club and is known for his strong overhead marking and accurate kicking for goal. However, Aaron at times, has been thrown in defence this season and has acquitted himself just as well behind the football.

Aarons year has been exceptional considering that we lost our other key forward, Justin Rodman, for the season at the start of the year, Devonport Football Club General Manager, Mark Fagan said.

He has had to carry the bulk of the forward line work often having two opponents working against him. He has definitely shown maturity above his age.

McNab is also an exceptional A grade cricketer with the Sheffield Cricket Club playing in the Cricket North West competition.

One day he may have to make a decision on which way he wants to head, Fagan said.

Tasmanian State League General Manager, Shaun Young, congratulated McNab for his outstanding year and winning the award that recognises one of Tasmanias greatest footballers, former Richmond star Matthew Richardson.

The Matthew Richardson Medal is named after one of Tasmanias modern day greats, and it is great recognition for Aaron to receive the medal for his outstanding year in the State League following on from his years in the Mariners program, Young said.

    PICTURE: Courtesy The Advocate

Matthew Richardson was born and started his football career in Devonport. His father, Allan, was a premiership player for Richmond in 1967. Throughout childhood and his adult life football has been front and centre. An acknowledged footy-head he is now also a respected commentator on the game.

Richardson played 16 games and kicked 23 goals with Devonport in 1992 and was drafted later that year under the Father / Son rule. He debuted for Richmond in 1993 and in his first season he was an AFL Rising Star nominee.

For much of his career Matthew Richardson has made a name for himself as an enigmatic player in Richmonds forward line, predominately at full forward. He has shown himself capable of producing great feats of high marking, running and goal kicking, but has had many seasons interrupted by injury during his career. He has lost the equivalent of 3 full seasons to injury.

In 2008 a move to the wing early in the year proved a masterstroke. At 34 year of age the star veteran was given a free-wheeling role and he averaged 18 touches, finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal, took the most home and away marks in the AFL (222) and still topped Richmonds goalkicking with 48.

Matthew Richardson has multiple individual player honours and has been recognized by Richmond FC and Tasmania with selection in their respective Teams of the Century and by his home state with early inclusion and then Legend status in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.

    CLUB NOTES | BURNIE DOCkERS

burnie dockersA lot of hard work by our volunteers has brought the Burnie Football Club a strong position on and off the field as we enter the finals series. Being top of the ladder at the end of the home and away series is the ideal platform heading into the finals and we are all excited looking at the challenge ahead.

We have continued the development of our club as a family friendly environment in 2012. We are fortunate not to have the financial imperative to push bar sales that some other clubs are faced with, and this allows us to focus on providing young footballers with a club environment based on mutual respect and honesty.

Our aim is for the Burnie Football Club to be the club of choice for families when their sons are getting involved with footy, from primary school in the Dockers Cup, through under age footy in high school, and then into the TSL Colts competition.

    Peter Vincent President

    PRESIDENTS REPORT

This year there has been some real consistency from a number of players. Without doubt the big guns in Luke Shackleton and Jason Laycock have had huge years. With Jason dominating the ruck duels around the ground he has given Luke Shackleton a huge advantage by putting the ball down his throat all year. Luke capped of a stellar season by winning the RACT player of the year award.

Another player who has had a consistent year is Nick McKenna. Since the state game where Nick played a key role in defence, Nicks year has come on in leaps and bound. He has played in numerous positions and occasionally having a run in the ruck. Very strong player who attacks the ball hard.

Ulverstone recruit Shaun Knott has a great debut TSL season. Since crossing over Knotty has been outstanding at both ends of the ground. For a big bloke he is very versatile and would be one of the fittest players at the club. Big engine and can run all day.

Two of the Dockers young guns that have really taken their football to another level this year are Rudy Barrett and Claye Hardy. Both players have had excellent years. Rudy would have to be the most improved midfielder at our club. With his raking left foot Rudy has added another dimension to his game with his hard running and excellent ball skills. Claye is also a hard inside midfielder with excellent foot and hand skill. This year Claye has been injury free which has been a huge bonus for the Dockers.

    2012CLUB NOTES | CLARENCE ROOS

cLArence roosThe Club has had another successful year on the field with the Senior team finishing the roster series in second and the Colts in first position.

The Clarence Ladies team have set the standard winning their fourth premiership in the last five years and all those associated with the Club we offer congratulations to the entire squad and coaching staff for bringing the silver ware home.

As the season heads into its concluding stages who could have predicted that the final five would be so close and go right down to the last roster matches to determine ladder positions.

I wish to thank our great sponsors for their continued generous support, our volunteers, staff, trainers, players and members and my fellow Board members for your hard work and dedication without which we simply could not survive

We wish all participating clubs the best of luck in the finals series.

    Roger G S Viney President

    PRESIDENTS REPORT

Brady Jones has made a huge impact since arriving and is one of, if not the hardest workers and leads the way with his professionalism. Hard work and natural talent has seen him touted as a possible mature age draft pick. His excellent performances earned him a place in Tasmania team where he won Lefroy Medal for best Tasmanian player.

Jake Cox crossed from arch rival Glenorchy this year and has been nothing short of outstanding. Running capacity and ability to carry the footy are big assets and combined with a deadly kick makes him a very dangerous player.

Mitch Williamson a big burley forward who won the TSL goal kicking this season. He is extremely strong and takes an excellent contested mark and is a very reliable kick for goal.

Aaron French tremendous season demonstrating what a quality footballer he is. Played in Tasmanian side and was among the best. Has really taken his game to a new level and can play in many positions but has made a name as a hard running, strong bodied midfielder.

Jason Bailey made debut 2011 but has risen to new heights in 2012. Regularly matches up on best forwards, and does a fine job. A no frills defender who works hard and hates to be beaten. Often giving away inches to his opponent his athleticism and strength are keys to his success.

Alex Gilmour pin point skills and desire to win the ball make Alex a very important player. Returned to TSL towards the end of last season and after a full preseason has made a big impact on the side.

Jake Murphy started senior career with the club this season and made a promising start. Can play as a medium size defender, or through the midfield. Has huge running capacity and is very athletic. He will develop into a very important player for the club in the future.

    CLUB NOTES | DEvONPORT mAGPIES

deVonPorT PiesMagpie faithful make no mistake; the Devonport Football Club is up and about with the future looking bright.

The light at the end of the tunnel is no longer a runaway train heading our way, loaded with $500,000 worth of explosives.

The board of the Devonport Football Club is two years down the track of a plan to rebuild the club, following a clearly defined blueprint. A sporting club built on a solid financial foundation, one the community will be proud to support and call its own and a club young sports men and women of the region will strive to represent while enjoying a safe and enjoyable environment.

The Devonport Football Clubs 2012 on-field performances have been guided admirably by our coaching staff headed by Glen Lutwyche with our young team following the example set by inspirational leader Al Clements. We have a highly talented group of young players coming through the ranks under the guidance of Junior Development Officer Matt Damon and Colts Coach Mark Lowe.

Sincere thanks go to our loyal band of volunteers who keep the club ticking and to the hard working staff led by General Manager Mark Fagan.

The Magpie machine is gaining momentum, our time is near, we will be back as a force in Tasmanian football and sooner than you think!

    Shane Yates President

PRESIDENTS REPORTThis season has seen the emergence of younger players mixed with some experience that will provide a solid foundation for the future of the club.

The club has been well served over the years by experienced players Al Clements and Sam Hess and this year the addition of Jeremy Soden, Adam Flannery, Justin Rootes, Dwayne Howard and Kurt Heazlewood to assist them has provided much needed guidance to our emerging young players.

Nathan Robertson, Clay Griffiths, Jack Vanderfeen, Lachie Williams and Jacob Campbell all came to the club from Ulverstone at the start of the season and have adapted to the higher standard of TSL football very quickly. Alex Lee has emerged as a good ruckman / forward following his year with the Mariners and along with Under 16 representatives Brandt Lee, Jesse Johnson and Kade Pitchford they all look set to play regular senior football in 2013.

Aaron McNab, Quade Byard and Brennon Kendall have certainly benefited from their years in AFL Tasmania programs and performed consistently all year. They will form a strong platform for the DFC for many seasons to come.

Aaron McNab was a member of the Tasmanian training squad and many believe he was unlucky not to represent the State against the might of the VFL earlier in the year. His selection as the Rookie of the Year (Matthew Richardson Medal) was a true highlight for him and the club.

The club has had a number of younger players experience senior football during the year and this will provide them with a good base for 2013. Jordan Smith, Brodie Deverall, Braden Van Buren, Billy Sharman, Claye Symmons, David Overton and Sam Shepheard have all played senior games during the year and have shown that with further development over the summer, they can have a real impact at senior level next year.

Club stalwart Mark Lowe has moulded our young Colt side into a competitive team and with the addition of players coming up from our successful Under 17 team the future looks bright if players knuckle down over the summer and build on the strength, fitness and skill level required to play TSL Football.

The return of Justin Rodman for 2013 will provide another avenue for our forward line and with the improvement of our younger players over the summer, expectations of further improvement are high.

    2012CLUB NOTES | GLENORChy mAGPIES

GLenorcHY Pies2012 has been a year of strong development at Glenorchy. On field we have seen a young team and a new football coaching staff and department settle in to set the path for future strength and success. Off field has seen similar positive steps taken with the Club embrace our role as the No.1 sporting team for the northern suburbs and the centrepiece of the Glenorchy community hub at KGV.

The Board have been working closely with the Federal and Local Governments to deliver our long held vision for the redevelopment of the GDFC owned rooms and facilities into a Sports and Community Hub with allied health facilities of a national standard. We have grouped several community clubs and providers to be part of the new facility and are currently finalising arrangements for ownership, management and design before agreeing to demolish the current member owned facilities launched by Eric Reece in 1968.

While this is a great opportunity for all stakeholders the project have a construction phase that impacts on operations but we are sure our hardworking staff, volunteers and board will be able to work through this to deliver an asset to the community and football. With this shared vision we look forward to the competition in 2013 and beyond with high expectation.

    John McCann President

    PRESIDENTS REPORT

Considering the 2012 Season was seen as a Development year within our club it was still a successful one in terms of results with the Senior side showing they were a big danger come finals time only failing to Lauderdale by 8 points in the Elimination final. Our Colts side also showed steady improvement throughout the season and were also rewarded with a finals berth also being knocked out in an elimination final to North Launceston.

It was a slow start to season 2012 for the Senior side with only 3 wins from the first 8 games. The turning point in our season was a 55 point lesson at the hands of Lauderdale in round 8, from then on we were able to comprehensively beat arch rivals Clarence twice and finished with an 11 win and 7 loss home and away record. Jaye Bowden had an absolute standout season and is favourite to win his 2nd Cazaly Medal, he was well supported by Captain Ben Reynolds, Ben Brown and Brayden Webb as other consistent performers.

There was a flock of young Magpies who improved as the season went on and none better than first year player Sam Bouwman and his partner in crime in the backline, Josh Arnold. We also had 11 players play their first senior game of TSL football which can only benefit the club longer term. We will be looking to build on 2012 and become a regular finals contender in 2013 and beyond.

    CLUB NOTES | hOBART TIGERS

HobArT TiGersWhile it was a tough season on the field, we were in the fortunate position to welcome new talent to the club and also induct colts players into a senior line up for which they will certainly be better for in the coming years. We could not be happier with the way the coaching team and playing group have gone about their jobs despite a heavy loss of 15 senior players at the front end of the season.

Off the field the Club has had a very busy time with our licence application, however keeping the wheels turning while all this has been going on has been our army of volunteers who, week after week, clean, tidy, massage, keep time, count interchanges, change the score board, cook meals and much more. Thank you very much for all your hard work and dedication.

Finally, to the Grand finalists out there today; the Hobart Football Club congratulates your clubs and your teams on your achievements this year in making the Grand Final.

    Sean Sullivan President

    PRESIDENTS REPORT

Although on field success was not what we would have hoped for, as a coach I am pleased with the development of the playing group at Hobart during 2012. After a tough year on field we have been able to uncover a pool of players who have shown the traits which will provide the club with leadership in the future.

While on a number of occasions our young list were able to compete with many of the opposition teams this year our lack of experience allowed teams to run away and win comfortably. Having said that it was extremely encouraging to see our young list continue to improve and listen to direction they were given. Our Colts team continued to develop and were unlucky not to string a few wins together. Brad Willis has done a tremendous job with these boys over the past couple of years and has great respect from all at the club.

Tarquin Neterway, Calvin Philp, Gerrard Lynd, Troy Cunliffe, Alex Hartley and Dane Colbeck joined the club during pre-season and gave great service during the year. Jade Young returned to the club and soon after Ben Free, Brendan Midson, Nathan Hardy and Lewis Goss came on board. Youngsters Rohan Bones, Stu Donnelly, Jordan Fazackerly, Dan Golding, Perry Mannering, Rhys Heald, Dean Jetson, Dylan Huxley and Brandon Clark all made their senior debut and acquitted themselves very well. These are our players of the future and we are excited to have them at Hobart.

We have perhaps had one of the highest turnovers of players in the competition over the past twelve months. This can be thought of as a negative but in fact provides an opportunity to those with drive and passion. I have been extremely impressed with how resilient our playing group has been and how they have continued to work on their game and improve as individuals. This will hold them and the club in good stead in the future.

I must thank our dedicated volunteers, board, medical and coaching staff and our extraordinary supporters for their unwavering support during 2012. Our future can be looked on as uncertain and many people choose to run from a situation such as this. I am proud to be involved with a group of people who have chosen to stay put, work hard and fight to once again propel our wonderful club to greatness. I look forward to being a part of the journey.

    CLUB NOTES | LAUNCESTON BLUES

LAuncesTon bLuesThe Launceston Football Club has enjoyed another successful year in 2012. Our participation levels have increased in all our junior programs, and although sustaining an unprecedented number of injuries in the first half of the year, we have been able to remain very competitive in our Under 18, Colts and Senior teams.

Can I take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of all our players, all our valued sponsors who enable us to provide the facilities and services to all participants at the Club.

We are also very fortunate to have many committed and dedicated volunteers and I take this opportunity to thank you all. To our junior coaches, their assistants and helpers, to all other football department assistants, to our catering and canteen volunteers, to all our events and fundraising volunteers, on behalf of the board of the Club we would like to sincerely thank you all for your efforts in 2012.

Good luck to all teams in the final series.

    Peter Anthony President

PRESIDENTS REPORTThe first half of the year was an interesting one for the Blues with a number of injuries to senior players. In the absence of the experienced players Josh Woolley, Jordan Harris and Scott Stephens were consistent contributors leading the way for our many first year players.

As the year wore on and the team became settled Kurt McCabe was dominant in the midfield really taking his game to a new level. Gary Shiptons return to the backline was important as he repels many opposition attacks and the return of Jackson Thurlow from the State Academy program was pivotal in the Blues late season surge. Jackson and Jesse Lonergan play well beyond their years and we are certainly looking forward to them playing big roles in this years Finals Series.

With 14 players making their debut throughout the 2012 season the future looks really bright at Windsor Park. Of those boys to play regular seniorfootyaretheKolodjashnijtwins(Jake&Kade) Jake Smith and Marcus Lee. All 4 were members of the 2011 State U16 Academy with the two Jakes and Kade graduating from the Prospect Hawks FC into the LFC Development teams. Marcus was recruited to LFC at the beginning of 2012.

Throw in the home grown talent of Rohan Seargent, Jake Rice, Thomas Sheppard, Luke Johnston and lets not forget the injured duo of Kyle Turmine and Alex Payne who missed the 2012 season due to knee reconstructions. All of these boys along with a host of others have shown great improvement from senior experience and with another pre season under their belts will all be pressing to become regular senior players.

2012CLUB NOTES | NORTh hOBART DEmONS

norTH HobArT The North Hobart Football Club has been in existence for over 131 years and this year has been one of the most challenging in the clubs history. The club started the season in an attempt to apply for the single State League licence on offer covering the CBD area of Hobart. However, AFL Tasmania offered a 50% joint venture to both Hobart and the North Hobart Football Clubs. Both clubs are working cooperatively to see this come to fruition in 2014.

The North Hobart Football Club recently held a Special General Meeting where the members enthusiastically voted in favour of a 50/50 joint venture with the Hobart Football Club and also working with the Southern Football League in applying for a licence to field teams in the SFL competition in 2014.

However during the process of applying for the licence a major drama occurred with the George Miller Stand on Ryde Street burning down. The Hobart City Council has received an engineering structural report which will be tabled and considered by council in the coming weeks making recommendation that the building be repaired to replicate , as closely as possible.

This years Presidents Luncheon recognised the achievements of the 1992 Premiership team coached by former Geelong star Mark Yeates and captained by one of North Hobarts favourite sons Mark Devine. Master of Ceremonies and former Premiership player David Noonan interviewed Mark Yeates along with a number of the Premiership players. Players from this Premiership side then lined up the following day to play in the North to the Bay day against some of the finest players from the Sandy Bay Football club.

This day was a huge success with the Demons home in a thrilling 2point victory over the Sandy Bay Seagulls. Thank you to all those involved in making this a great day.

The Board would like to take this opportunity to wish all teams playing in the Grand Final the best of luck and to all the members, volunteers, players, officials thank you for all your hard work in 2014.

From the Demon family we send our best wishes to Life Member and tireless volunteer David Omant who took ill earlier in the year and is hopefully on the road to recovery.

    Bruce Free President

    PRESIDENTS REPORT

We lost a wealth of experience and talent over the pre-season with eleven players from our last senior side of 2011, either leaving or retiring. Henry Schade was drafted to the Gold Coast Suns. Zeke Gardam also decided to give up football for the year after only just three games.

On the up side, we had three quality Mariner boys come to our club in Calen Jeffrey, Jarrod Hibberd and Claude Alcorso. We also recruited youngsters Larry Owen and Jamie Clarke from Hobart, Brad Coad from Clarence and Rory Fairbairn from Queenscliffe Victoria. Tom Allwright returned to the club after a couple of years at Geelong, as did Tom Reid after spending two years in Queensland. Our other notable recruit was Jake Briggs from Hobart.

All these changes meant we ended up with a very young and inexperienced list with only six of our players aged 23 or over.

Our best performed player for the first half of the year would undoubtly be Joe Arnol, who coincidently suffered a season ending injury in Round 9. Younger players new to senior footy in Fairbairn, Charlton, Riley, Unsworth and Sandric put in some good performances in the first half of the year.

In the second half of the year younger players also new to senior footy in Salter, the Fox brothers, Willis, Males, Howard and Grant put in some good performances. If some of these younger players can take the next step, it will certainly strengthen our player depth for next season.

After a slow start to the season, tough defender Adrian Williams was probably our best performed in the second half of the year, along with Tom Allwright. Usual suspects in Murphy, Street and Wilson had various big games during the year, while Mariners Vice-Captain Calen Jeffery also played a few outstanding games.

Our two most consistent performers for the year were Hugh Williams and Jesse Wells, and we expectthesetwotobeprominentinourBest&Fairest voting.

CLUB NOTES | NORTh LAUNCESTON BOmBERS

nTH LAuncesTonOur club continues to takes steps forward both on and off the field.

The Clubs Committee has been delighted with the commitment and professionalism of our coaches and players in season 2012.

Those of us old enough will remember in the last statewide competition it took us near a decade to win the senior flag. In this current league it is my view the club is further advanced with excellent development foundations established combined with the clubs corporate governance protocols being at a more mature state.

Season 2012 was head Coach Zane Littlejohns first season in the job. An exceptional coaching talent we all look forward to Zanes continued leadership in season 2013.

Many of our young talented players recruited from our development zone were rewarded with senior games in 2012 demonstrating our clubs total commitment to building a successful senior team via opportunities provided to the players in our zone looking to challenge themselves to play at the highest level available in Tasmania.

The continued development of our young players has a lot to do with our Colts Coach, Adrian Smith, and his support coaching team. We wish Adrian and his Colts team all the best for todays Grand Final.

We look forward to working hard over the pre-season to continue the growth of our young players with our ultimate aim of regaining the on field reputation of being a powerful and continually successful club.

Off field the club has continued to perform strongly with another strong profit result forecast. All persons involved in achieving this result are proud to be able to stand alone without needing to beg for hand outs to stay alive.

Strength in numbers - on and off the ball!

    Thane Brady President

PRESIDENTS REPORTThere have been a number of good performances by players over the course of 2012 ,this not necessarily resulting in a team win but all players have adapted to a new game plan and team structure over the course of the year which will only benefit North Launceston in future years.

The first half of the year saw a fair few players hit the ground running with Leigh Harding taking on a new role up forward and excelling , Luke McCarty outstanding down back and also through the midfield in a new role, Daniel Roozendaal in the ruck has dominated clearances and has been terrific around the club, Mitchell Van Den Berg, whilst young, has taken the next step and is fast becoming the leagues premier forward, Alan OSign has continued his consistent play and high work rate, with enormous courage and Dylan Riley, after moving from South Launceston, has given plenty of drive and run and settled into his new club.

The second half of the year saw those players still playing well but the emergence of Sam Carins to fitness showed why Sam is regarded highly by all both in Tasmania and Queensland, Sam having recovered from a knee reconstruction found fitness in the second half of the year and at CHB controlled games with his run , poise and ball disposal, Sam is also a wonderful role model on and off the ground with training habits and team play. Ethan Petterwood is a young up and comer with great stamina and has also matured into a good player.

    Young Guns/Academy Players

The 2012 season has seen the Northern Bombers debut a number of young players and also had nine players in state academies. Like most TSL clubs the Northern Bombers have an excellent bunch of young players who we hope to develop into quality senior players.

2012CLUB NOTES | SOUTh LAUNCESTON BULLDOGS

sTH LAuncesTonThis year has been one of the most positive for the South Launceston Bulldogs in the new TSL competition. With several wins on the board and a high performing U18s side the clubs future is looking ever brighter. Again we ran our multicultural program with Dhino joining the club from South Africa. The team and staff are now eager for what 2013 has to offer.

The board of the club has worked hard in developing the clubs facilities, sponsorships and social events with some fantastic evenings with Barry Hall, Wayne Carey and Mathew Richardson. Coming up we still have our Grand Final Luncheon on Sept 28th, Golf day on Nov 16th and the usual club events such as trophy night.

A special thanks to all those who have helped the club through the year. Our sponsors contributions, member participation and player/staff dedication continue to build the clubs great future.

2012 has been much improved for our club, winning 6 games and being very competitive against the top 4 sides in the TSL. In a first the Bulldogs twice defeated arch rival North Launceston and finished above them on the TSL ladder.

Players who stood out in the first half of the year include:

Mitch Hills captain of the football club who played centre half forward for the most part, he has an extremely high work rate and has been able to run his opponents into the ground, combined with his contested marking giving us a fantastic target when transitioning the ball out of the back half.

Michael Musicka plays an explosive brand of football and started 2012 well, Michael was selected to represent Tasmania in the senior state game in which he made the best players.

Shaun James very underrated player outside of our club who takes the best medium sized forwards each week. Shaun has been our biggest improver and started the season in great form.

The strength in our current list can be attributed to the fact we have number of young guns that have now started to play verywellatseniorlevel, theseplayersinclude:

Matt Hanson half forward flanker with elite aerobic endurance, this combined with his hardnosed approach to the game has seen some high standard senior footy reaching the 20+ possession mark on more than 3 occasions.

Cody Thorp Is our number 1 ruck at the club who has given our midfielders first look at the ball most times. With his giant leap and competitive nature, Cody has also hit the scoreboard in season 2012 with 10 goals.

Players who have finished 2012 well include:

Jobi Harper has played two very different roles for the club this year, key defender and running midfielder. Jobi gives great flexibility with his ability to play on the likes of Adam Derbyshire and also play midfield and collect 25+ possessions.

Rory Mansell has played key back in 2012 and been extremely solid and given our younger players support in the back half. On many occasions running back with the flight taking courageous marks.

All players have applied themselves in a professional manner and should be commended for their hard work in a much improved season. We are extremely determined to follow our 3 year plan and play finals footy in 2013.

Burnie and Launceston meet for the second consecutive year in the Wrest Point State Leagues Big Dance.

In 2012 many of the key players from the 2011 edition return to resume battle. Burnie are seeking redemption, while the Blues are looking to enter territory their Club has not charted for more than 7 decades as they seek back to back state premierships.

If these Blues and Dockers have come to play then the Wrest Point State League Grand Final of 2012 will be a game for the Ages!

    DOCkERS vS BLUES

Jason LAyCOCk vs Joe GROENEwEGENThe key battle to determine which midfield gets on top. Will Laycock dominate in the air or will it be the running ability

of Groenewegen that provides the Blues with a target. The colossal frame of Laycock has been able to monster all

opponents in 2012, but Groenewegen has the mobility and ability to be the Blues most influential player. He who gives

his side first use will give his team the best opportunity to come out on top.

Darren BANhAm vs Jordan hARRISBanham is the quintessential small in and under player with a big heart and goal sense. A serially strong tackler

who loves the tough contest while putting his team first. The form of Harris is red hot and he is a clear favourite for

Launcestons Club best and fairest honours. If he can continue to control the area around the fall of the ball Banham

and the other Dockers smalls will have limited impact on the scoreboard. Who will get first hands on the crumbs

    Banham or Harris?

Russell ROBERTSON vs Josh wOOLLEyThis is sure to be a mouth watering tussle between the ex AFL player on the one hand and the competitions and Tasmanias

outstanding running defender on the other. Robertsons brilliant high flying and goal sense is sure to attract the football

fans. While Woolleys closing speed and dash is admired by the football purists.

Eli TEmPLETON vs Jesse LONERGANTeam mates in July as they went into battle representing The Map. Two months down the track these teenagers are the

fiercest of rivals. Both players possess explosive with excellent goal sense. Defensive pressure and ball winning ability

are further attributes of these rising stars with AFL Draft aspirations.

Luke ShACkLETON vs Tim BRISTOwThe prime movers of their respective teams midfield. Look for Shackletons tough inside ball winning ability

compared with the flashy hard running Bristow. In 2012 Shackleton has been the competitions dominant midfielder,

but Bristow, the 2011 Tassie Medallist, remains crucial to the Blues engine room. Who can get on top and provide

their forwards with the most opportunities?

Nick mCkENNA vs NAThAN ODONOGhUEThe battle of the big men! NOD versus Macca. Will McKenna control the back half as he has done all year

for the Dockers or will ODonoghue be able to repeat his heroics from the 2011 Grand Final where he was

awarded the Baldock Medal for best on ground?

    2012PRESIDENTS MESSAGE | BURNIE DOCkERS

A lot of hard work has brought the Burnie Football Club into a strong position on and off the field as we enter the finals series. Being top of the ladder at the end of the home and away series is the ideal platform heading into the finals and we are all excited looking at the challenge ahead.

Our coterie functions during the year have been very successful with some fantastic guest speakers headed up by Cameron Ling and Michael OLoughlin. We also held two premiership reunions during the year honouring Don Gales 1962 Burnie Tigers Premiership team and Putt McCarthys 1982 Cooee Bulldogs premiership team.
