Hi EveryoneOur AGM on November 17thwill end my 2nd year as president ofWSCC.

This is also the time when a new president will be selected alongwith other members of your executive.

The next year will bring about changes that will serve to generatemore participation from members into the affairs of the club. Yourexecutive have been looking at bringing speakers and driving im-provement seminars at our general meetings along with adminis-trative changes in our accounting and procedures.

Currently I can assure the membership that WSCC will have a dif-ferent relationship with the Gimli CDC for the management of our

race events at GMP, including the probability of a Chump Carevent. Further to this, I am currently dealing with the city of Winni-peg for the use of their sludge Lot. This is a continuation of theprevious work done by Art Schroeder with the city property depart-ment. It looks very positive for us to be able to hold our Auto-Slalom events at a facility which will give far more possibilities forexciting slalom courses.

I want to thank the members of the executive who have served themembership under my term as president.

I also want to remind everyone that our AGM is upon us and nowis the time to renew your involvement in our club. It is important foryou to be there, participate and meet the new executive in ourelection process. Also this AGM will see several Notices of Motionfor progressive changes to our constitution. This is your best op-portunity to see change in the making and to contribute by yourvote for or against proposed changes.

Thank you for an exciting two years for me and I am confident thatyou presence at the AGM will be an interesting and eventful eve-ning for you.

    Dr Henri Marcoux, President WSCC

2011 WSCC AWARDS CEREMONYAbove the trophies await their moment in the spotlight on the Millen-nium Centers grand marble countertop. On this screen was a seriesof WSCC videos. The Autoslalom and road race wall plaques are still

Below, Darin Ws name is nowin the lid of the 50 year old Hard Luck trophy. It was good to see himhamming it up. A good sense of humour helps when your car isneedy. As Scott pointed out, it is one of the most useful of trophies, suitable for collecting broken parts until next years Banquet.

For those who have not been to a WSCC awards ceremony, this tro-phy needs a bit of explanation. 50 years ago, the trophy group feltsorry for racers who had particularly bad luck during the season.Since a bad year can mean pitching a lot of broken parts, this steel

garbage can symbolized this issue. As you can see, 50 years ago,S.Routliffe won what was then called the CONSOLATION TROPHY.The 1965 winner, Jon Reski was just 23 when he won this in 1965. Hewas still racing a Formula Ford when I met him in the 1980s. He hadstarted SPORTSCAR ENGINEERING in Moorhead MN fresh out ofhigh school. Jon left his lovely home north of Moorhead in 1999 to sailthe Caribbean Sea for a few years. Very cool retirement plan! David

Why not volunteer to be on your clubs Executive?

For each upcoming year, all of the officers (and senior helpers) of

WSCC must be elected at the AGM, or appointed soon afterward.Every autumn, WSCC puts together a nominating committee. Theseexperienced members look at all those members who have been activeat meetings and at events, those who have been helping the club in thepast, and those who come forward when a call is made to the generalmembership for volunteers. Before you offer to help in this way for thefirst time, you may need to feel more comfortable. Attending member-ship meetings regularly is a good start. One of the best ways would beto ask to attend the October (2012) Exec meeting, and get to know theoutgoing committee. The Nominating committee might even put you onthe list! There is still time to put your name forward at the AGM!

RULESWe all rub up against rules every day. As motorsports enthusiasts, weare all aware of racing and traffic rules, and how important they are inkeeping the track and our roads safe. Even in the privacy of our ownhomes, rules are important. Washing your hands before eating fingerfoods is one good one. Putting leftovers in the fridge is another, whichcould save your life in the worst case. Our auto competitions havefairly elaborate rules, to keep what we do fun.

While any clubs executive holds power over what the club does, even

they are governed by a set of rules. They obviously make decisions tosee their vision of club operations come true. Rules limiting these de-cisions are in the clubs Constitution. This document is the primary wayin which the Founders and ordinary members have (over the years)been able to indicate to each years Executive committee those limitswithin which they must operate. Our AGM is our chance to adjust thoserules.

It is natural to resent a rule on occasion. It is also natural to resist theimposition of any new rule. For this reason reform and new rules aresometimes very difficult to put in place. The US Congress has de-

volved for this very reason. Those in office want more than anythingelse to win their next election. They know that this requires huge sumsof cash donations. Any limit on bribing US congressmen is doomed tofailure. In our club, on the other hand, those running things are drivenby wanting to serve and to see WSCC be successful. Bribery is forbid-den, and election campaigns are very low-key.

HOW TO SAVE YOUR CLUB SOME MONEYIn the very old days, racers paid their entry fees and membership duesby cash or cheque. You may not know, but this is still works. For Ice

Race and Rally it has always been done this way. You may also notknow that by paying by check you save the club a bit of money.

Those who use the online registration service and Paypal may enjoymaking a middle-of-the-night payment, and they never have to attend ameeting to pay fees. They do incur fees for WSCC. In recent years, this convenience has cost WSCC several thousand dollars in fees.

While those who favour the e-payment system may call the cheque-paying members backward, the old ways still work well, as before. IfWSCC remains financially prosperous, it is said that we can afford thee-option. If hard times force WSCC to raise fees, it might be time to

revisit the e-payment scheme.Paying early by postdated cheque is reliable. It worked for decades.Having a WSCC card to present when it is called for is fairly simple. Those who handle membership and entrant data have been asking usall to use only e-payment. If we did, it would save a few seconds permember, for those who handle the data collected.E-payment costs each of us between $10 and $20.(Paypal fees + DLB fees divided by about 150 fee-paying members)Like government services, none of this is truly free to ratepayers.

If event registration staff have a smart phone with the current member-ship roster displayed, those who joined very recently by DLB will be in-cluded. This sort of thing can make life a bit more complicated for ourregistration staff.

Those who have been asking you to use e-payment tendnot to say much about the annual cost.

NOVEMBER (MANITOBA) RALLYCROSSWell the day dawned early (thanks to daylight savings ending a weekago) but it was snowing. That did not deter us. We packed up the car,and loaded our smallest trailer with cones, speed-bump concrete cylin-ders, stakes, a big 12v battery to power our timing system, and so on.We were still on schedule when I realized we had forgotten the cellphone, and we decided that returning for it would make us late andwaste a bit of fuel. In the pic below left, Jason starts on a modest-pacereconnaissance lap in his Lada. Below right, Jack L adjusts the cameraon the side of his car. This was a great position for catching the frontwheel action, but it was a target for a lot of mud and grass debris onevery left turn. The camera was moved to the roof for later laps, whereit got hit by less stuff. We are all looking forward to seeing the video!Paste this into your browser for Jacks rallycross videos:http://www.youtube.com/user/CanadianJackal?feature=mhee

POTENT RALLYCROSS CARSThe two Mitsubishis above would seem ideal for this sort of thing. Notethe video camera on the side of Jacks blue one. They have a shareddisadvantage. Their air dams are great for preventing lift at very highspeeds on pavement. On this course, there is rutted mud. The red caris Jasons wifes everyday transportation, and she did not want him tobreak it in competition. He had to run the black Lada instead. A fairlyrare old car, and well suited to this sort of event. Short wheelbase, allwheel drive, but not as much power as it could use, and its tires werenot the latest deep-tread mud-and-snows. Thanks to a generous dona-tion from the Zedril Pro Rally team, Jason now has some real rally tires, used but they still have some aggressive tread. We can expect theLada to do even better soon. Of course, having your own rallycrosscourse would be an unbelievable dream for many of us.

  • 8/10/2019 Aficionado November 2011

    25/28

Early in the day, the tires have not yet shaved off all the grass stems inthe tight turn above left. In the bottom pic, Jacks front tire spits outsome mud clumps, seen here in mid-air beside the car. The grass wasnearly roof-high on the rally cars. At times, we could see bits of mud, flying 10 feet in the air, way above the grass, and no car. If I had more

time to do pics between timing chores, we might have some really coolpics.

RALLYSCROSS CARS AT RESTAbove left, the Lada, the Acura, and a white Subaru. Above right, ourAccent timing car, and another long freight train. This very busy cross-country line runs along Jasons property line.

The Aftermath: At bottom left is the launch line and turn 1 off tothe right. After the finish line the cars cross from right to left in the mid-

dle of this pic. At bottom right is the exit of turn 1 onto the main straight. These pics are at the end of the day, after about 150 laps. In the picbelow right is turn 2. None of the tire tracks run off to the left. As thecars power out of this turn to the right, each one flings a bit of mud intothe debris-field along the track. Some of these flattened clods areweigh hundreds of grams. In the pic below left, along the straight, the cars are going to the left, pulling the straws to the right without pulling them out of the ground.Mud from the tires has been flung into the air, landing along the track atthe top of the pic.

    27/28

Jeff and Emily pose for a pic at the end of the day, above left. Aboveright, Scott begins a lap in his everyday PT. Note that there are mildmud-streaks on the car, but not much else is affected. Note the littlebug clinging to the leading edge of Jacks rear spoiler in the bottomphoto. (A little glob of tire-flung mud) There are faint mud trails else-where on the car. They will wash off harmlessly.

Fastest laps before lunch: Jack had a 95.02seconds onhis first lap, and got down to 94.07. Even with snackspassed around, some felt the need for burgers and left. Others

ate lunch in their cars. The course dried for an hour, and wasmuch faster when they returned. Scott led things off with a93.81, Justin with a 93.49 and Jack with a 92.61. Afterhours of practice, Justin got a 91.35 and Jeff was downto a 91.12 and then a 90.90s for fastest time of the day.
