Government Panels decide who gets care:

• In the UK, NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) “sets a threshold for cost-effectiveness that it applies uniformly: It has decided that Britain should spend the same amount saving or improving the life of a 75-year-old smoker as it would a five year-old. If a treatment is found to cost more than about $30,000-$45,000 per “quality-adjusted life year,” it is rarely covered. Healthcare Rationing USA

This week a government panel issued a recommendation that women begin mammograms at age 50 instead of the American Cancer Society’s recommendation that mammograms begin at 40. Per the Washington Post: “The new recommendations took on added significance because under health-care reform legislation pending in Congress, the conclusions of the 16-member task force would set standards for what preventive services insurance plans would be required to cover at little or no cost.”

Key Findings from the 2008 Health Tracking Study Physician Survey

• Slightly more than half of physicians (53%) reported their practices were accepting all or most new Medicaid patients; 28 percent reported accepting no new Medicaid patients. (In other words, you have a difficult time finding a doctor if you have Medicaid, due to poor government reimbursement of doctors under the plan).

Massachussetts Universal Coverage

• According to an article by Michael D Tanner, “How Not to Reform Healthcare” since the program became law, insurance premiums have been increasing by 10 to 12 percent per year, nearly double the national average. On average, health insurance costs $16,897 a year for a family of four in Massachusetts, compared to $12,700 nationally. Meanwhile, total health-care spending in the state has increased by 28 percent.

The Evil Insurance Industry

At a time when everybody's getting hammered, they're making record profits, and premiums are going up. What's the constraint on that? ... Well, part of the way is to make sure that there's some competition out there.”

According to Yahoo Finance, Profit Margins by Industry shows the industry "Health Care Plans" ranks #86 by profit margin (profits/revenue) at 3.3%. Measured by profit margin, there are 85 industries more profitable than Health Care Plans

According to the Center for American Progress, there are over 1,000 private Health Insurance Companies in the United States

In Minnesota, 9 HMO’s are allowed to “compete” for your business, all of them functioning as NON-PROFIT corporations. ( 4 of those companies make up 80% of the market share)

If the Government joined in with their “public option” that would leave us 10 choices. Due to over regulation, insurance companies are not allowed to sell across state lines. Would you increase competition by adding 1 (government) insurance company or 1000 companies to the list of those competing for your business? You do the math!

• In 2007, 17.6 million of the uninsured had annual incomes of more than $50,000 and 9.1 million earned more than $75,000
