10TH ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE FROM AFFILIATE CHAIR

The Affiliates started the year sprinting, and have yet to slow down! With our

new theme of “re-imagination,” we are soaring to even greater heights!

T he 10th Anniversary Opening Night Gala was unique, celebrating our magnificent Walt Disney Concert Hall, an architectural and acoustical mar-

vel. Yo-Yo Ma and Gustavo Dudamel were magnificent, as was the Patina gourmet dinner. Founders Room never looked so lovely, with the tables featur-ing one hundred spectacular orchid plants. Kudos to Co-Coordinators, Cindy Norian, Kathie Dagermangy, and Marilyn Kezirian for a memorable even-ing! The Philharmonic Friends Awards Luncheon reached a pinnacle this year, culminating four years of rising donations. We are having success reaching out to more potential donors. Congratulations to last year’s Coordi-nator, Margaret Lulejian. We applaud our enthusiastic new members who have recently participat-ed in two events. The Musical Trivia Party, which also honored sponsors of new members, will surely be continued next year. The fun and bonding will long be remembered! The New Member Welcome was strongly attended and brought in the largest number of members ever to take a backstage tour of Walt Disney Concert Hall, led by the Speakers Bureau. Both these events were creatively chaired by Arlyss Burkett, Membership Coordinator. Toyota Symphonies for Youth is in full swing, ably led by Coordinator Stephanie Klopfleisch, who designed a first-time Orientation Workshop for volunteers. The Instrument Petting Zoo, organized by Margo Penney and Shirley Farley, served more youth than ever! Remember to send in your reservations for the Invitational Rehearsal of Scheherazade on December 5. We have two significant additions to the event. Speaking to us will be Diane Paul, new Chair of the Los Angeles Phil-harmonic Board of Directors. Diane is the first female to serve in this position in 37 years. Also, we will have a première of the long-awaited Affiliate Video. The past few weeks I have had the privilege of visiting the meetings of seven different Committees. It has been totally inspirational! There is a strong common element to all these committees: out-standing programs, fabulous food, and unparalleled camaraderie! Let us remember, “Give the Gift of Membership” to our friends and acquaintances. The Los Angeles Phil-harmonic Affiliates are the BEST. June 22 was a most special day for the Affiliates. That was the day they personally showed their appreciation

to Aida Gaona at a Kendall’s Restaurant luncheon for the incredible two years that she served as Affiliate

Chair. Her tenure was particularly marked by her inexhaustible energy and organizational skills. Furthermore,

Aida virtually seemed to be ubiquitous. She seemed to be at every function of every committee! Gary Hollander

“Take a Stand”

YOLA on the International Stage

Since its inception in 2007, YOLA has become the largest and most influential El Sistema-inspired program in

the United States. The LA Phil has embraced this leadership position, sharing best practices and lessons

learned through national convenings, peer exchanges, an online resource library, and acting as a learning

center for arts educators from around the world. That role has been formalized through a program named

Take a Stand, a partnership of the LA Phil, Longy School of Music and Bard College.

This partnership offers:

El Sistema-based Masters of Arts in Teaching program located at the LA Phil's YOLA at HOLA site,

educating a new generation of community leaders

International symposium exploring the value of arts education and the El Sistema model.

A symposium is scheduled to take place in LA in February 2014.

Affiliate support through financial donations and volunteering are valued in this program. Opportunities to par-

ticipate in the February symposium may be offered. We shall keep you posted. Glenda Burnett

COMPOSERS’ 100TH AND 200TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS IN 2013

Benjamin Britten age at death, 63 years

November 22, 1913 – December 4, 1976

Richard Wagner age at death, 69 years

May 22, 1813 – February 13, 1883

Giuseppe Verdi age at death, 87 years

October 10, 1813 – January 27, 1901

With the month of November came the LA Phil’s first set of Toyota Symphonies for Youth concerts. What better way to engage the chil-dren in your life than to take them to a youth concert and give them the gift of a Junior Patron member-ship?

The Junior Patrons, a program de-veloped by our very own LA Phil Affiliates, enhances the family ex-perience of attending youth con-certs at Walt Disney Concert Hall. As Junior Patrons, children and their families enjoy a list of great perks such as discounts at the LA

Phil and Hollywood Bowl Stores, an exclusive Junior Patron t-shirt, opportunities to attend Meet the Artist events, and an invitation to a reception and rehearsal at the Hol-lywood Bowl!

As if you needed more enticement to sign up the children in your fami-ly, we’ve added a few new mem-bership benefits this year! Junior Patrons receive a large sticker of Walt Disney Concert Hall upon check in at the youth concerts. We’ve also implemented a referral program: get one more family to sign up for Junior Patrons, and re-ceive an invitation to a backstage tour of WDCH!

For more information and to en-roll your children as Junior Pa-trons, please visit our website at http://www.laphil.com/jrpatrons or call 213.972.3530. Sharleen Eusebio

LONG BEACH AUXILIARY

The Long Beach Auxiliary continued its tradition of ex-

citing and innovative programs with a Summer Interlude

held in the home of member Barbara Hillman. The tal-

ent and personality of harpist Ellie Choate and the

thoughtful book reviews provided by Marcia Gordon

combined for a lovely afternoon.

The Fall Musicale at the Long Beach Yacht Club show-

cased Sarah Parra, flamenco dancer and founder of

Esencia Flamenca Dance Company, accompanied by

classical flamenco guitarist Gabriel Lautaro Osuna.

Several members of the Auxiliary attended the Walt

Disney Concert Hall 10th Anniversary Opening Night

Gala of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, directed by Gus-

tavo Dudamel, and featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The Long Beach Auxiliary is looking forward to its Holi-

day Musicale December 13th at the Virginia Country

Club in Long Beach. This beautiful venue will be the

perfect setting for a program by the ladies of Third

Wheel, a talented woodwind trio that redefines chamber

music with a fresh perspective and unusual instrumen-

tation.

Planning ahead to 2014, a luncheon, program, and

fundraiser to benefit the LA Phil will be held March 8th

at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. LA Phil mu-

sicians Catherine and Jonathan Karoly will be the fea-

tured performers.

WDCH 10TH ANNIVERSARY — POINTS TO PONDER

Imagine how close we came to no WDCH at all.

Ten years ago, could we have imagined the im-

pact the Hall was going to make?

Is WDCH’s sound character improving with age?

As an icon, it was always a stepping stone to

boast, “I played at Carnegie Hall.” Is there now

that same kind of image associated with Walt

Disney Concert Hall?

WDCH is a go-to venue for top orchestral musi-

cians and orchestras.

Has LA changed because of WDCH?

How can the Affiliates continue to adapt to ongo-

ing progress and changes, to keep the LA Phil-

harmonic at the forefront of American orchestras

with WDCH as an iconic venue?

What would be a great 10 year plan for the future

of WDCH?

COPW has an exciting year planned with interesting venues and diverse programming. For the first event of the 2013-2014 year, Metro Art Tour Docents helped forty-eight members and guests navigate the Red Line subway and Gold Line light rail. They lectured about the broad range of art in the stations, told a little about L.A. history, and added some train trivia. The trip cul-minated with lunch at The Plum Tree Inn in historic Chinatown.

The second event was the New Member Tea at the home of Ed and Judy Hirsch. Eighty two members and guests enjoyed sipping wine, tea, and coffee while enjoying a selection of arias from “La Boheme,” “Carmen,” “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata,” and “Streetcar Named Desire.”

Georgian pianist Nino Sanikdze, who is head coach for the Domingo-Thorton Young Artist Program at the Los Angeles Opera, accompanied Joshua Guerrero,

tenor; D’Ana Lombard, soprano; and Rebecca Na-thanson, soprano. Joshua, D’Ana, and Rebecca are members of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program and members of the LA Opera.

At the conclusion of the program guests, members, and performers enjoyed a high tea reception.

SAVE THE DATE for “SYMPHONIES FOR SCHOOLS” To be held on February 4, 5, 6, 7, 2014

Elementary concert dates are February 4 & 5 and the Secondary concert dates will be February 6th for Mid-dle School and February 7th for High School.

Elementary students will be entertained and educated as the orchestra recreates the sounds of nature’s transformations during Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. From the gentle breezes of spring, through summer thunder-storms, to the fall harvest and a winter ice storm, the music will enchant and inspire children. Middle and High School students will be treated to the first of the LA Phil’s 2014 TchaikovskyFest celebrating the Russian composer’s most dramatic works, including excerpts from Swan Lake and the Nutcracker Suite. Additionally, the LA Phil will premiere new works composed for this concert by the four high-school aged Fellows in the LA Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program.

A SFS Orientation will be held on January 21, 2014. It is very important for all new members and long-time volunteers to learn about the program. There will be new motivating information and a back stage tour.

In December, more details and a volunteer sign-up form will be sent directly to you for you to complete and return to Suzanne Olsen, Affiliate Coordinator for Symphonies for Schools. Suzanne Olsen

WESTSIDE COMMITTEE

At the Philharmonic Friends (PF)

Awards luncheon held at the Dorothy

Chandler Pavilion in October 2013,

the Westside Committee was recog-

nized for placing third among all Affil-

iate Committees in meeting its goal

for PF donations to the Philharmonic.

PF contributions are but one of many

means by which Westside partici-

pates in fundraising activities on be-

half of the Phil. Our April benefit,

“Simply…the Best,” was held at the

Riviera Country Club and combined a

regal ambience with elegant enter-

tainment for a very successful effort.

In addition to the traditional evening

benefit event, the Westside Commit-

tee has conducted several ‘mini’ ben-

efits of events such as bridge, cook-

ing, and shopping excursions to help

augment our Benefit proceeds.

An additional gift from our Committee

was the presentation of a score of La

Mer to the Philharmonic Library in

memory of Past President Rosemary

Stewart, who served the Committee

and the Philharmonic for many years.

A major emphasis in the Westside

Committee has been a scholarship

program for local music students to

help them with the expenses of music

study, music and music lessons, in-

struments, and summer music pro-

grams. Funded by contributions and

proceeds from our annual Desserti-

mento evening, students audition for

a committee of judges in March of

each year. Many young musicians

receive cash awards, and a few per-

formers are asked to play solos with

the Palisades Symphony at their

June concert. Over the years of this

scholarship program, many students

have continued their musical studies

in college and further, and have re-

ported that participation in this schol-

arship program was an asset in pre-

paring them for advanced study and

professional excellence.

The Westside Committee looks for-

ward to another productive year as

we plan our Spring Benefit to be held

on April 6, 2014 and, meanwhile, as

we schedule several ‘mini’ events.

Look for our activities in the Affiliate

Calendar and come join us!

We currently have 35 active mem-

bers, 4 provisional members, 20 in

other categories, for a total of 59

members.

Peninsula Committee Continues the Music

Fair Tradition with Fanfare

On a recent Sunday afternoon, PCLAP held its

annual fall fundraiser at the stunningly beautiful

setting of Palos Verdes Golf Club. Over 350

guests and members enjoyed the lively combo of

classical music performed by local young musi-

cians, the cabaret style of the Prima Divas, and

the classic jazz tones of hometown favorite David

Benoit.

The event was aptly named A Fanfare for Fall

and follows in the tradition of Music Fair with its

emphasis on highlighting young musicians. The

delighted guests heard performances by young

violinists, flutists, and cellists during the opening

reception and by a trumpet recessional after the

main performance. Accompanying David Benoit

were two young musicians: a drummer and a

bassist. The first Music Fair was in 1972 and

evolved over the years into a full music festival.

In recent years, the Fair has been redesigned to

modern tastes under titles including A Musical

Feast, Peninsula Music Promenade and Music

Fair II – Historic Roots – A New Experience.

The tradition of great talent continues!

ENCORE

Past Affiliate Committee Presidents are invited to join Encore

and expand contact with the LA Philharmonic and Affiliates.

The Wilshire Country Club was the setting for the

Fall General Meeting and Luncheon of the ENCORE

of the LA Phil Affiliates on Monday, October 21st.

ENCORE, composed of past Presidents of the vari-

ous Affiliates groups, has luncheon meetings and

sponsors the annual Orchestra Party.

The gathering began with a charming, informative

presentation by the Pennyroyal Players, a group of

women who use stories, songs and pioneer-era

American quilt designs as thematic elements to illus-

trate many aspects of the often challenging lives of

women who raised their families on the frontier. Hu-

mor, romance and loss were deftly woven into the

lively performance.

The luncheon provided opportunities for catching up

with friends about the latest news from the LA Phil.

The next ENCORE event will be a Holiday Tea.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL (B&P) COMMITTEE

The Speakers Bureau celebrated the 10th Anniver-

sary of WDCH, as well as the 10th Anniversary of the

founding of the group, and honored Marilyn Kelliher,

outgoing President, at a meeting and luncheon at the

home of new President, DeAnne Hayes. The new

fiscal year was started with 100% of the members

renewing their membership for the upcoming year.

This Fall and Winter, Speakers Bureau members are

busy giving tours of the Hollywood Bowl to elemen-

tary students from 43 schools. The tours have be-

come very popular with the students and their teach-

ers. This program is in conjunction with the Music

Mobile™ program.

In addition, the members are giving WDCH Back-

stage Tours to adult and selected student groups

within the LA Phil extended family.

The B&P Committee is off to an-

other great start this season,

having kicked off the 10th anni-

versary season with new LA

Philharmonic Principal Trumpet,

Tom Hooten.

His exceptionally entertaining

and educational talk gave the

attendees new insights about

the various types of trumpets

and related instruments that

brass players have to keep in

their collection, on the ready!

Under the guidance of our Presi-

dent, Dave Clark, plans are se-

cure for the rest of the 2013-

2014 season of luncheon speak-

ers.

Our December holiday plans in-

clude group attendance at one

of Bette Midler’s sold-out perfor-

mances at the Geffen Play-

house.

We are also planning an ad hoc

dining get together at a Korean

restaurant to continue celebrat-

ing the holidays in style.

Our fundraising activities are all

geared to raise money for the

music library and we are plan-

ning another function at the Dor-

othy Chandler Pavilion 5th Floor

later this season to accomplish

more of the same, featuring

James Wilt, Associate Principal

Trumpet, and Philharmonic

friends.

Additionally, we are planning to

again enjoy one of former Asso-

ciate Principal Cello Danny

Rothmuller’s renowned Hungari-

an dinners, which will raise even

more money for the library!

When the Valley CommitteeS members gathered at the home of Sue and John Clauss for the September wel-come-back party, they were astounded to find the hosts in jail. The round-up this year had a western theme with guests dressed in cowboy hats, jeans, boots, bandanas and frontier dresses. Before the afternoon was over, most people had been sentenced to jail. When they were all out, the guests enjoyed a beautiful barbecue served on tables decorated in red, white and blue on the lovely patio with views of colorful gardens. Melanie Sanguinet entertained with her accordion, displaying yet another talent.

The Valley CommitteeS takes its dedication to the Los Angeles Philharmonic seriously, so right after the wel-come-back party members got to work planning their first fundraiser of the year. A terrific organ concert was planned with Dr. Timothy Howard, head of the Califor-nia State University, Northridge, Organ Program, per-forming in the organ studio in Nordhoff Hall. The beau-tiful music was followed by a reception and refresh-ments in the nearby home of Ange Kasza.

The Valley CommitteeS looks forward to a second fundraiser in March 2014, featuring Los Angeles Phil-harmonic trombonist, James Miller.

Los Angeles Philharmonic Committee

Fall 2013 arrived, bringing renewed energy to our committee. In September, two exceptional music concerts were presented. The initial musicale oc-curred at our general meeting when members, Sylvie Ollivier and Nora Chiang Wrobel, performed an ex-traordinary two-piano program with featured works by Mozart, Ravel and Milhaud. Later in September, members attended a private chamber ensemble at Catherine Crahan and Daniel Florek's home in Han-cock Park. The Piano Trio, written by Clara Schu-mann when she was only 21 years of age, was the featured work. LA Phil violinist Elizabeth Baker and cellist David Garrett were the generous donors of this salon performance. They were accompanied by Da-vid's wife, Junko Euno Garrett. After the perfor-mance, the musicians answered questions about the orchestra, the provenance of their instruments, the youth music education programs, their teaching ex-periences, and inquiries regarding their own back-grounds as concert musicians. We could not have asked for a more charming evening with better music or company. Following the salon, we enjoyed an in-formal potluck dinner.

Margo Penney and Meg Coulter have the Music Mo-bile™ instruments set up in the Cottage for the ele-mentary school visits. The first day will be on Novem-ber 8, when local third grade classes will learn about the orchestra. Our Symphony for Youth chairs, Rhebe Aguado, Ruth Eisen and June Furman have organized the schools which benefit from our ticket donations. The enthusiasm of the children attending the "Wing on Wing" concerts captivates our spirits and lifts us as a community.

Our Letter Writing campaign begins on November 13 under the direction of Claudia Shahanian, Suzanne Olsen and Sharon Willson, who have assembled the packets for potential donors. The funds that are raised contribute to the committee's endowment pledge to the LA Phil for music education programs.

Phyllis Conkle and Linda Nazaretian, our benefit Co-Chairs, are working on plans for our benefit, "Opening the Doors to Music." On March 29, 2014 the Marion Davies Guest House and Annenberg Community Beach House will open their doors to members and guests to raise funds for the LA Phil and its music education programs. Affiliate members are invited to attend this festive event in an excep-tional setting for an exceptional cause.

Foothill Committee

Foothill Committee held its Sep-tember meeting at historic Padua Hills Theatre. This charming loca-tion, so steeped in history, was the perfect setting to acknowledge long-time members whose efforts have contributed so much to the Foothill communities and to the Los Angeles Philharmonic: Carol Sontag (55 years), Velma McKel-vey (50), Catharine Alexander (43), Lori McCarthy (45), Georgia McManigal (43), Jil Stark (42), Nancy Weingartner (39), and Jan Corey (38). And of course, the committee’s remarkable past presidents were also honored: Velma McKelvey, Jan Corey, Janice Hoffman, Georgia Shan-non, Paula Pitzer, Jo Ann Chris-man, Nora Butler, Marilyn Dale, and Jeanine Wilson.

The perfect complement for such a meeting in such a beautiful set-ting was Pacific Winds Trio En-semble, comprised of Salpy Ker-donian, flute; Darryl Tanikawa, clarinet; and John Nunez, bas-

soon. this exceptional group pre-sented a flawless combination of music, anecdotes, and infor-mation.

Like all of the auxiliaries, Foothill Committee is now fully involved in this year’s activities: Youth Pro-grams including the re-introduction of Music Mobile™, Season Ticket Sales plus trans-portation, the Friends campaign,

and, of course, planning for the Holiday Party and for the annual fundraiser.
