Match background

Two famous clubs, who both gained points with added-time goals in their opening group games, meet at the Amsterdam ArenA. Wesley Sneijder scored in the first minute of stoppage time to equalise for AFC Ajax against AC Sparta Praha and gain a valuable away point, while former Ajax forward Dennis Bergkamp came on as a substitute to win the game for Arsenal FC against FC Thun with a goal two minutes into added time.

Four previous UEFA meetings: The clubs have previously met in four UEFA club competition matches, in one knockout tie and in a group stage of the UEFA Champions League. Ajax have won two times and two have been drawn.

Success in UEFA Cup forerunner: Prior to that, Arsenal did beat Ajax in European action. Their 3-0 first leg semi-final win in the 1969/70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, thanks to two goals from Charlie George, enabled the Gunners to progress to the final after a 1-0 defeat in Amsterdam. Arsenal overcame RSC Anderlecht 4-3 on aggregate in the final.

First UEFA meeting: Ajax gained almost immediate revenge two years later in the quarter-finals of the 1971/72 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Their 2-1 success in Amsterdam, with two goals from Gerardus Mühren, and a 1-0 win at Highbury after a George Graham own goal, allowed the Dutch club to progress towards the final. Two goals from Johan Cruyff set up Ajax for a 2-0 final victory against FC Internazionale Milano.

Last meeting: The clubs last met in the second group stage of the 2002/03 Champions League. The game at Highbury was drawn 1-1 after early goals from Sylvain Wiltord and Nigel de Jong, and the return finished all square 0-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA. The series was one of five draws in the group that allowed Ajax to move into the knockout stage.

One home defeat in seven: Ajax have played seven previous home games against English clubs, winning four, drawing twice and losing once – a 3-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur FC in the first round of the 1981/82 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

First win against English sides: The first win by Ajax against an English club, was arguably the one that announced them as a major force in world football. In the second round of the 1966/67 Champion Clubs' Cup, Ajax beat Liverpool 5-1 at the Olympic stadium, where the football world had their first taste of the skills of Cruyff on the international stage.

Unbeaten in three Dutch visits: Arsenal lost their first game in the Netherlands in the 1971/72 match, but have been unbeaten in their three subsequent visits to Dutch clubs, all in the past three seasons, and all in the Champions League. In 2002/03, Arsenal won 4-0 at PSV Eindhoven, and in the next group stage drew 0-0 at Ajax. Then last season, the English side went to PSV and gained a 1-1 group-stage draw.

One win in ten: Ajax have won just one of their last ten Champions League games – a 3-0 success against Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC in October 2004.

Eighth successive season: This is Arsenal's eighth season in the Champions League, and their eighth season in succession in the competition.

Two defeats in 16 games: Arsenal's current form in the Champions League is nine wins, five draws and two defeats in the last 16 games. But before this current run they had failed to win any of their previous eight matches.

Goalscoring run: Arsenal have scored a goal in their last 17 Champions League games, since the 0-0 draw at FC Lokomotiv Moskva in October 2003.

No wins in five away games: Arsenal suffered defeat in their last away game in the competition in the last 16 at FC Bayern München last February. Prior to that Arsenal had drawn their last four away games in the competition.

Previous away record: Before the loss at Bayern, Arsenal were unbeaten away from home in their previous six UEFA Champions League games. They opened this sequence with two wins, 5-1 at FC Internazionale Milano and 3-2 at RC Celta de Vigo, followed by the four successive draws.

Luis Medina Cantalejo is relishing the chance to take charge of Europe’s biggest names this season after his accession to the UEFA elite ranks as the latest in a long line of excellent Spanish referees.

Career: Medina Cantalejo was born in Seville on 1 March 1964. He made his first appearance in Spain’s highest division at the start of the 1998/99 season, and was awarded his FIFA badge at the start of 2002.

2002-04: Early appointments in the UEFA Cup and UEFA European Under-21 Championship helped him to find his feet at European level. The 2003/04 campaign saw Medina Cantalejo continue to make excellent progress with two UEFA Champions League and two UEFA Cup assignments. The summer of 2004 saw him chosen as a member of the referee team for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final round in Germany, where he took charge of three games.

2004/05: In the 2004/05 campaign, Medina Cantalejo take charge of four UEFA Champions League games and three FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ajax return to winning ways(Saturday, 24 September 2005)

Domestic News

There were mixed results for the four sides involved in UEFA Champions League Group B as AFC Ajax returned to winning ways while Tuesday's opponents Arsenal FC lost further ground in the Premiership after a goalless draw. Things are far from rosy at FC Thun and AC Sparta Praha either after both were defeated as uefa.com rounds up Saturday's action.

AFC Ajax 4-1 Roda JC

A makeshift Ajax side earned a morale-boosting victory at home to Roda to get back on track following Tuesday's demoralising 2-2 draw with ADO Den Haag - who scored twice in added time. Danny Blind's team have been plagued by injury in recent weeks, but it was an unforced team selection that reaped reward in Amsterdam, Angelos Charisteas vindicating his coach's decision to draft him into the team in place of Markus Rosenberg with two first-half strikes.

Steven Pienaar and Tomá š Galásek were both on target in the second period, the latter from the penalty spot. Such are Ajax's injury problems that when Wesley Sneijder (hamstring), Mauro Rosales (groin) and Nigel de Jong (buttock) were taken off with slight knocks, Spanish defender Juanfran and youth player Emmanuel Boakye both made their first-team debuts. John Heitinga and Olaf Lindenbergh are both serving suspensions.

The injured trio join an imposing injury list containing Zdenek Grygera (groin), Maarten Stekelenburg (shoulder), and Maxwell, Nicolae Mitea, Hatem Trabelsi and Kenneth Vermeer (all knee). And Blind thinks Tuesday's fixture with Arsenal will come too soon for Trabelsi, saying: "I think the Arsenal match will be too early for Trabelsi. In the next few days it will become clear if the other players will make it. I obviously hope they do so, but I have my doubts."

West Ham United FC 0-0 Arsenal FC

Arsenal lost more ground to English Premiership champions and leaders Chelsea FC as they were held to a goalless draw at London rivals West Ham, a result that saw Arsène Wenger's side slip eleven points behind Chelsea. Without a number of key players through injury, the visitors struggled to break down a well-organised West Ham defence and were reduced to shots from outside the penalty area, Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and José Antonio Reyes all trying their luck from distance, but it was the home side who came closest to taking three points, Bobby Zamora heading wide when unmarked late on.

Wenger was still without the services of Thierry Henry, with a groin injury expected to sideline the French international striker until late October. Fellow forward Dennis Bergkamp missed out with a back complaint, as did Swiss defender Philippe Senderos, while Robert Pirès sat out the game because of a thigh problem. Fredrik Ljungberg, however, did recover from a similar injury to play all 90 minutes, while Matthieu Flamini came on in the 71st minute in place of Brazilian international midfield player Gilberto, who signed a new contract running until 2009 in midweek but left Upton Park on crutches with an ankle injury.

"Is the title over or not? I don't believe so," Wenger said. "We are frustrated because we did not win the game, but there were goods and bads in the game. We feel we were quite solid defensively and created chances, but we could not take them. We miss something up front. Is it in our final ball, the way we take our chances? It looks just like there is something lacking there, but I don't believe it is down to a lack of individual quality, because everyone wants to do so well."

FC Aarau 2-1 FC Thun

Thun made it three defeats in five games as the hope of a return to form engendered by Wednesday's comprehensive 4-0 victory against FC Schaffhausen quickly disappeared at lowly Aarau, in a match that also saw Tiago Bernadi hospitalised after banging his head in a collision with an opponent

Urs Schönenberger's side dominated from the kick-off against Schaffhausen, goals from Leandro Ferreira and Eren Sen leaving them with a 2-0 advantage after just ten minutes, before Ferreira and Bernardi added further strikes after the interval. But the ease with which they earned that victory never looked like being repeated

Arsenal debt to captain Campbell(Monday, 19 September 2005)

against an Aarau team keen to build on their midweek draw with FC Zürich.

And it was the home side that broke the deadlock on the hour through Rainer Bieli. Swiss striker Mauro Lustrinelli equalised 12 minutes later, but parity lasted just ten minutes as Cameroonian midfield player Jean-Pierre Tchetschoua restored the advantage and there was no way back a second time for Thun.

Schönenberger, who is still concerned about the fitness of captain Andreas Gerber, said: "We need to play better against Sparta in order to have a chance. But I'm positive, my players have always been able to rise to the occasion."

AC Sparta Praha 0-2 FC Baník Ostrava

Sparta's poor domestic run continued as a 2-0 defeat by another side scrabbling for form, Baník, made it four points from their last five Czech top-flight games. Goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek took the captain's armband after Karel Poborský joined second division SK Dynamo Ceské Budéjovice on loan following a disagreement with AC Sparta Praha coach Jaroslav Hrebík, and he was soon the centre of attention as Baník started strongly.

By the half-hour mark Blažek had conceded twice in a fractious first-half performance that resulted in coach Jaroslav Hřebík making three substitutions at halftime. The changes revitalised the home side, but they could not reduce the deficit, and they were fortunate not to go further behind when Zdeněk Staněk hit the crossbar.

"We played pretty well, but we were unable to score a goal," said the coach Jaroslav Hřebík. "It seems finding the net is still our main problem." The Sparta coach will also have to make do without Miroslav Slepička, who was dismissed alongside Baník's Petr Čoupek in the dying moments and now faces a domestic suspension. On Sunday, the Sparta players voted midfield player Tomáš Sivok as the new captain.

After a weekend where Group B rivals AFC Ajax, AC Sparta Praha and FC Thun all struggled away from home, Arsenal FC made the most of home advantage to claim a solid English Premiership victory.

Arsenal FC 20 Everton FC

Sol Campbell made an emphatic return to domestic duty for Arsenal as the Londoners won 20 against Everton on Monday night. The England defender, who turned 31 on the eve of the match, celebrated in style with two headed goals, in the eleventh and 30th minutes, from José Antonio Reyes freekicks. Campbell said: "I had one chance for the hattrick but two is fine. It is great to be back. It has been a long time and it felt good."

Campbell had missed the first four games of the Premiership season through injury and was given the captain's armband as Thierry Henry continued his rehabilitation from a groin problem. Prior to the Everton match, Arsène Wenger said: "Thierry needs two weeks' rest and we have sent him away for ten days."

There was a fresh worry for Wenger when Robert Pirès limped off with an ankle injury just before the halfhour to be replaced by Aleksandr Hleb. In goal, Jens Lehmann came in for Manuel Almunia, with one game left of his European ban, while Robin van Persie started up front despite his Matchday 2 suspension against AFC Ajax. The 18yearold Cameroonian midfielder Alexandre Song, on loan from SC Bastia, made his Arsenal debut as a late substitute.

AZ Alkmaar 42 AFC Ajax

Ajax slumped to eighth in the Eredivisie after a highscoring defeat by Alkmaar. Wesley Sneijder's double was not enough to tame AZ, who are jointtop after five wins from five. The Amsterdam side lie nine points off the pace, albeit with a game in hand, having lost two of their four matches.

Sneijder gave Ajax a tenthminute lead with a crossshot following good work by Olaf Lindenbergh. Shota Arveladze hit back with two goals, before Sneijder equalised on the stroke of halftime with a delightful freekick. But two secondhalf strikes from Kenneth Perez put the tie beyond Ajax, who suffered their first league defeat

The match also cost Ajax midfielder Lindenbergh's services for the next three domestic games. The 31yearold is suspended having seen red for hitting out at Arveladze. However, defender Zdeněk Grygera was able to play on Sunday, with his sendingoff against Willem II on 10 September rescinded. Defender Julien Escudé appeared on the bench after recovering from back trouble, but goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg (shoulder), leftback Maxwell and winger Nicolae Mitea (both knee) all missed out.

"We gave it away too easily. In the first halfhour we played terrific football," said Sneijder. "We stopped creating in the second half and allowed AZ to play to their undoubted potential. It is painful for us, but it's too early in the season to draw conclusions."

SC Düdingen 01 FC Thun

Four days after coming within a minute of taking a famous point from their Champions League debut at Arsenal, Thun returned to earth with a bump as they laboured to victory over lowerleague side Düdingen in the Swiss Cup first round.

The Bernese outfit lined up with nine of the team that lost 21 at Highbury, but it was one of the two players drafted into the side that made the most telling contribution, German youngster Eren Sen scoring the only goal after the halfhour.

Urs Schönenberger's men backed off after making the breakthrough, however, and struggled to finish off their fourthdivision opponents. A sluggish performance was lightened by some moments of individual skill, while Sen and substitute Florian Favre were denied by the woodwork as Thun had to settle for a narrow win to take them into the second round.

1. FC Slovácko 20 AC Sparta Praha

Sparta's poor domestic run continued as a 20 defeat at Slovácko made it four points from the last four Czech topflight games. Miroslav Matušovič's freekick aside, Sparta never really threatened their lessfancied rivals as the hosts dominated. Thomas Sowunmi broke the deadlock just after the interval before former Sparta player Vladimír Malár capped a fine win in the final minute, capitalising on a mistake from goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek.

Sparta entered the game without midfielder Tomáš Sivok and striker Miroslav Slepička, who both sustained injuries in the 11 Matchday 1 draw with Ajax, while defender Lukáš Zelenka was only fit enough for bench duty. Talismanic captain Karel Poborský did provide a fillip, returning from a long layoff, but was short of match fitness and withdrawn midway through the second period.

Coach Jaroslav Hrebík was left to rue his side's profligacy after a disappointing allround display. "We enjoyed some good combination play but lacked the shooting ability to finish the job," he said. "The midfield played well, but other players elsewhere did not help them."

How the UEFA Champions League works…

The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992.

Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for current champions Liverpool FC.

The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.

Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round-robin group matches as well as its traditional knockout format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stage, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knockout stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals.

If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knockout round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.

The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.

An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knockout stage.

UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m (CHF930m) - higher than the revenue obtained last season.

Use within European football Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. The net amount of €430m (€453m in revenue less €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations) available to the clubs will be split into a fixed amount of €206m – starting bonuses, performance bonuses, match bonuses), and €206m for the so-called TV market pool (distributed proportionally to the income from the TV contracts of each country). A surplus of €18.6m is expected for this year’s competition.

Club payments Each of the 32 clubs involved in the Champions League group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m. In addition, they will receive a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage.

Winners' reward The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m.

Total minimum amount This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

Solidarity amounts Solidarity payments to European associations, leagues and clubs are expected to total around €75m. Some €22.5m will go to European leagues represented in the Champions League, while between €6.4m and €11.6m will be distributed among the European leagues not represented in the competition. The solidarity contributions are, among other things, intended for investment in club youth development programmes.

The official UEFA website, uefa.com, kicked off the UEFA Champions League group stage with a record of its own, registering 11.7 million page views and 682,000 visits, as the competition got under way on 13 September.

Beating last season These figures beat the totals set on last season's opening night on 14 September 2004 when uefa.com received 8.4 million page impressions and 416,000 unique visits. Those totals have been eclipsed with increases of 39 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.

Latest results and statistics The website has been redesigned for the 2005/06 campaign, to provide a growing global audience of football fans with the latest live match results and statistics, plus enhanced multimedia coverage of European football. The site covers news from the 52 UEFA national football associations and 16 UEFA competitions, all reported in nine languages, including Russian, Japanese and Korean, as well as English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Video footage uefa.com has a wealth of video footage available and as a result of the redesign, an embedded media player on the homepage specifically targets the broadband market, offering users a taster of the unique uefa.com Action video product.

Broadband users represent more than 80 per cent of the current uefa.com user base. This compares with just 54 per cent of users accessing via broadband in 2001 when the site was launched.

Enhanced online resource UEFA Media Technologies CEO, Alexandre Fourtoy, explained: "We are delighted to be offering supporters of European football throughout the world a vastly enhanced online resource for the 2005/06 season and beyond. All the additional elements that have been added to uefa.com in the past four years are now better integrated to make the site easier for our visitors to use. We believe that our strategy of tailoring content to the broadband market has been successful, and our recent redesign is a continuation of that pattern."

Steady development Europe's football website has evolved steadily since its initial launch in 2001, and the new design builds on the success of the official UEFA EURO 2004™ site. uefa.com received more than 75 million visits and served over 700 million page views in the last season, and on average, the site welcomes more than two million new visitors every month.

Top nations The list of top 15 nations from which football fans accessed uefa.com in the last 12 months is a mark of the site's global appeal - Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Russian Federation, Spain, Turkey and the United States. These 15 head a total of 220 nations from which users accessed the site in the last year.

No statistics are provided for the Inter-Cities’ Fairs Cup as this competition was not held under UEFA auspices.

Statistics: Appearances The player appearance statistic is calculated by adding the amount of times the player has been in the starting line-up plus the amount of times the player has been introduced during the course of a match. For the calculation of appearances, all matches - including all qualifying rounds - are included for both UEFA Champions League (UCL) and UEFA club competition (UEFA) listings. UEFA club competitions are defined as the UEFA Champions League (and European Champion Clubs' Cup), the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Intertoto Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the European/South American Cup.
