PTHS Senior Earns Architecture HonorsAustin Chappell named a top 10 finalist in the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Competition
This PTHS senior has been named a top 10 finalist in the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s National High School Competition. Austin created a new design of the High S h l Lib f th titi Hi k l t d f th 226 j t i dSchool Library for the competition. His work was selected from the 226 projects received from students in 13 states across the country. Austin is taught by Fred Burns at the High School.

These two students from McMurray Elementary received a perfect scores in the recent WordMasters Challenge —a national vocabulary competition. Their score ranked them among only 144 fifth graders in the nation to earn a perfect score The students wereamong only 144 fifth graders in the nation to earn a perfect score. The students were coached for the challenge by teacher Elizabeth Clark.

Peters Township High School hosted a Skype in the Classroom session with physicists from CERN in Switzerland. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research and Susan Hlebinsky’s class is the only group of students in the world to be given this y y g p gopportunity. Fifth grade students at McMurray Elementary put on their annual State Fair as the culmination to their Human Geography Unit. Groups of students are given a U.S. state or territory to research. The students design a game or activity related to their state that visitors to their “booth” can play.

Mexican Fiesta
First Graders at Bower Hill Elementary celebrated the culmination of their unit studying the Mexican culture with a special presentation this week. The students performed a musical show for parents and their classmates that incorporated many of the things they learned during the unit. The students also took part in a fiesta that allowed them to sample Mexican food and games.

Students at McMurray Elementary held their Celebration of the Arts on May 21 in a special evening that featured performances, art displays, and hands on activities. Guests could even perform a little karaoke to get into the spirit!

Used Book Sale and Bowling Leagues Fund Teacher Grants
District PTAs Donate More Than $3,700 in Grants
Thanks to the PTAs across the District and the Used Books Sale and Bowling Leagues, teachers received nearly $3,700 in grants for their classrooms. Projects ranged from A l TV it t iP d d f l b k t t i ti f th thApple TV units to iPads, and from classroom book sets to incentives for the marathon walking program. This is the second year that the PTA has offered grants from their fundraising efforts.

Over two days, the students did a variety of projects that helped them to identify the qualities of a good leader and to learn how they can exhibit those in their school and with their friends.

Dr. French comes to peters with more than 16 years experience in the City of Pittsburgh School, where she has most recently served as the Deputy Supt. Please join us in welcoming her to the District.
