Created by Cincinnati-based designer Tom Will Make, the Horn Candle Holder is made using three different brass pieces: the actual candleholder, the neck, and the base, which are joined together for the final piece. All parts are made from brass, with the bent neck sitting atop a round base with a flat bottom. While partly created to give the decorative object a playful appearance, the bend at the neck of the candle holder is actually a handle, allowing you to easily carry it from one room to another.

Aesop’s new store is located on the basement level of an ION shopping, close to an area that was once used as a nutmeg plantation.Inspired by the site’s history, architecture firm Snøhetta used a collection of materials, colours and forms to create what they call an ‘upside-down forest’.A dark ceiling references the orchard floor, complemented by sisal carpet in the same rich tone. Thin timber battens hang from the ceiling, forming walls that curve throughout the space like three trunks in a grove. Selected central battens are suspended with horizontal ‘branches’ fixed to the stems acting as product displays. Exposed walls are pink, reminiscent of the colour of mace, the other spice harvested from the nutmeg fruit. To create continuity between the ION store and another branch of Aesop in Singapore’s Raffles City complex, Snøhetta chose to display products on similar brass shelving units and inside a brass cabinet behind the till point. Brass panels were also used to cover the store’s facade.

Atelier8’s latest project, Aquarium, settles into the new nightlife entertainment hub in Shanghai. Due to the project’s location, the plan does not rely on the pre-existing square, instead standing alone. Dynamism in a static space led to the concept of this lounge, entirely glazed, with different objects inside and people moving around, resembling a fish tank. The enclosed space defines an atmosphere and opens itself to the visitor. The main goal was to define those boundaries. The architects decided to keep the original windows as a line between the public and private spaces, enhancing their importance with a curtain chain, which will add movement and a soft characteristic to the huge glass surface, yet maintain privacy. The line between the serving space and seating area becomes a subtle wall that holds copper and glass shelves, and the necessary kitchenware. The kitchen is nested in the back, open to the tank via a horizontal window.Once inside the tank, the sequence continues with the bar built in concrete and weathered steel followed by a four-metre long concrete table through the main axis of the space. The flexible use of the concrete table hosts both the clients and the staff.

Green Office Park is a 25-hectare district in Tangerang, Indonesia, that offers a park-like ambience within a residential cluster of 11 five-storey buildings. While the entire structure presents itself as a typical sterile building, the integration of materiality and a greener approach lends an interactive tactile and tectonic experience, both visually and empathically.A brown tone is fairly dominant in the surrounding buildings. The choice of palette to complement these and the overall concept seems to be rather predictable yet unusual in Indonesia. The designers incorporate copper even though it is rather uncommon for real copper to be used in interior design. Most schemes would be compromised by the use of aluminium composite panels with a copper look, or by simply spraying paint to mimic the desired texture. For Jakarta-based design studio ILATAAJ, the use of copper as the main material gives that ‘golden’ look and elevates the office unit to a new level of luxury.

Stephanie Sayar and Charbell Garibeh are a young design duo. The two designers met in their first year of college, and have been into the design world ever since. They recently opened a small workshop in Beirut and were selected by Starch Foundation as product designers to exhibit their work through this year. Trap Floor Lamp is a sculptural floor lamp made from different sizes of brass tubes, and a marble base. Each tube ends with hand blown glass bulb. The different heights of the brass tubes create a playful light installation.Droop Desk Lamp is a simple table lamp that reflects a fusion between different materials to create a minimalist design. A combination of hand blown glass bulb, with a brass base, merged and blended with a geometrical marble block to create one nostalgic element.

Located in the heart of Zaragoza, in the basement of a residential building previously occupied by a bus station, the site of the Liang Xin Centre has a street facade and an interior area that extends inside the block. For the first Liang Xin Centre outside Malaysia, the architects proposed a project of dark tones based on the darkness and silence of the empty space and the articulation of the interior routes, and attentive to the different degrees of opacity of materials. In this sense, the new facade is made entirely of copper. Its qualities as a natural material change over time, tinting its tones and adding early reflections. Pixelated patterns were also drilled using digital technology. The material presence of copper during the day and integrated lighting at night make the facade a reference of light for the street at sunset. These are the elements that give visibility to the centre from the outside. The interior spaces are organised from the axes that articulate the circulation, enhanced by the effects of symmetry and perspective. Offices, locker rooms and service rooms are located on both sides of this interior corridor. In the reflexology room, a suspended pergola of perforated copper—similar to that used on the facade—filters natural light and offers views from the windows to the courtyard of the dwellings on the upper floors.

Characterised by angles, intersecting elements, and craft, Sticks+Stones re-examines traditional crystal models through material capacity. This fascination with structure becomes the essence of the collection, while the experimentation of walnut’s innate properties becomes the driving force in creating these wearable design objects. Exploring form, size, and proportion—all critical in the process of crystal cutting—the walnut skeletal framework layers as well as integrates with the brass details and cotton cord to create pieces that reflect a return to craft techniques. Stick+Stones seeks to reconnect designer, maker, and wearer to develop holistic objects that respond to the mass production of consumer goods.

Spanish interior designer Ramón Esteve Estudio has designed the new Bouet Restaurant in Valencia, mixing contemporary and traditional elements. Existing materials have been combined with unique furniture pieces specifically designed for the interior, including irregular mirrors, copper hanging lamps, and geometric-shaped furniture.Ramón Esteve Estudio divided the restaurant into three sections: the lobby entrance, where guests can enjoy a drink at the bar, the main dining area and the outside courtyard. A visual language has been developed for the restaurant by fusing copper and marble elements, which deliver an industrial feel to the building. One of the defining features of the interior is the hanging lamps, which take the form of an abstract bird silhouette, guiding the viewer in and around the space.

Renowned Italian architect and designer Vincenzo De Cotiis is showcasing a selection of his works for the first time at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London. Called Pop Nouveau, the solo exhibition is comprised of new furniture pieces taken from his ‘progetto domestico’ collection. With over 30 years of experience in design, Ve Cotiis’s aesthetic is both lavish and spare, rich and raw with primacy of material over form. The pieces on show include a large silver-plated brass wall cabinet, a contorted neon-light chandelier in tubular brass, as well as two new wall lamps, a floor lamp, two side tables and a dining table. Referencing the artistic movement of the beginning of the 20th century, a romantic spirit confronts an innovative realism in all the pieces. They all result from an influence that arises not as style restrictions but as regenerative creations. Two themes circulate amongst the exhibition: pop—as rebellion against stereotypes, and nouveau—the liberation from mechanised forms. Vincenzo De Cotiis applies it by creating transformative and organic pieces that surpass both time and beauty. The coffee tables, for example, resemble neo-romantic pools of water; the contorted metal light fixtures have been shaped like branches and the bases of the tables are rooted like the stumps of trees.

Techne Architects recently finished their latest interior fit-out of the ‘Poacher & Hound Café’ in Melbourne. The scheme integrates the use of natural materials, brass and graphic elements, and responds as a physical representation of a poacher and a hound narrative.Located on the ground floor of a commercial building in an industrial area, the cafe offers a valuable point of difference to mount Waverley’s cafe scene. Techne’s design embodies a slight industrial aesthetic, the liberal use of other earthy materials including terracotta, brick, and granite gravel add further texture and colour to the space. Meanwhile, the surrounding floor and wall planes have been kept deliberately minimal to highlight the textured elements.Earthy materials have been distributed, including terracotta, brick, and granite gravel.Brass objects scattered throughout the space are treasured pieces. The space is imagined as the sanctuary of a harsh terrain traveller, creating refined resources which are of the land.
