AERONAUTICAL AERONAUTICAL DECISION MAKINGDECISION MAKING

(ADM)(ADM)

In 2005…

•International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) set a goal to reduce the accident rate by 80% in 10

years•FAA•NTSB•HAI•FAASTeam•Flight Schools•Pilots •Insurance Companies

To date the accident rate is still very much the same!

•80% of all the accidents are caused by Pilot Error. •20% other

So, it appears if Helicopter pilots could be trained to make better decisions (ADM), a major portion of the helicopter accidents could be eliminated and movement towards the desired goal could progress!

TIME FOR SOME FUN

Will all the SAFE PILOTS please raise their hand?

PILOT ERRORS• Physical• Mental• Decisional

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS• Level 1 Perception• Level 2 Comprehension• Level 3 Projection

Perception = RecognitionComprehension = Understanding

Projection = Anticipation

Good Decisions?Experience + Analysis = Situational Awareness (SA)

SA + Aeronautical Decision Making = Risk Management

“I consider my decision to be the Safest course of action”

GOOD TRAINING

60 year old (Legacy) training to PTS

Trained by inexperienced CFIs

ADM training just prior to check ride

There is a Better Way to Train Pilots

Maneuvers Based Training (MBT)

Vs.Scenario Based Training

(SBT)

Maneuvers Based TrainingMBT

• Pilots can fly a helicopter to meet PTS

SCENARIO BASED TRAININGSBT

• Pilots in Training (PT) • In Command• SA• SRM• ADM• TAA• Can safely fly for an employer

My Goals

Industry wide change for Accident Reduction

• FITS/SBT/LCG –Facilitators• Flight School Acceptance• Employer Recognition• Insurance Co. Acceptance• FAA update of PTS

SUMMARY

I am on a mission to reduce the helicopter accident rate starting immediately by helping to train the Industry to change from legacy MBT to FITS accepted SBT/LCG by training Facilitators in accepted Curriculums.
