Richard Maxted of Sherburn Aero Club once again
provided the amazing facilities, hospitality and weather for the first Royal Aero Club 3R’s race of the 2014 season.
Saturday the 5th dawned with excellent visibility. The octagon followed by the practice and race for the Paul Walker Trophy went without a hitch. Sunday was forcast for bad weather, but this seemed to be confined to
the North and South of the UK, so again with amazing visability the race for the Ginger Lacy Trophy began on time.
Nearly all competitors and crew arrived on the Friday evening. Early on Saturday Judy was busily signing in each crew and checking the aircraft documents for the first time this year. If your documents are missing or out of date I’m afraid that means NO RACING!
Roderick took control of checking the insurance documents of each aircraft. Please be aware that ‘combined liability’ will be mandatory from the next time your insurance is due for renewal. Or you can add this to your current policy now.
The weekends handicapping boss was Izindi. Tucked away in the handicapping room Izindi assisted by Cliff managed to provide quick results. The first day’s race speeds were based on the octagon and the second on the race speeds from Saturday.
Izindi and Cliff trying to work out why Alan Turner’s octagon seemed to infringe Italian air space.
Sterling and very effecient work in the handicapping room.
The start line crew: Roderick, Izindi, Will, Lucas, Mike and Judy. Lucas is a potential new racer who came along to see how it all worked. He intends to be at Leicester as a navigator to learn more. If anyone needs a navigator get in touch.
The Sherburn course, four laps with six turn points. The scatter was a little complicated with a course join at turn point two.
The course was very flat but with the dramatic power stations as navigation aids the field of aircraft found their way to a tight finish.
Pete Chilcot, seen here pointing at Turn Point Three, or at least according to Alan Turner, whos amazing Navigator - Rex Levi - on Saturday, became ‘unsure of position’ over the Drax Power Station and couldn’t quite remember how many laps there were supposed to be.
After a stiff talking to by Alan, Rex was reinsatated into the right hand seat of Alan’s Grumman AA1 for the Sunday race.
Pete Chilcot also organised all the hotels and dining over the weekend.
Both Friday and Saturday evenings were spent in the Milford Hotel. A great night was had by all, photos later in the magazine.

The Royal Aero Club Records Racing and Rally Association were extremely honoured to have Carol Walker, daughter of Paul Walker, attend and present the Paul Walker Trophy.
The wonderful Trophy presentation. Each of the two races over the weekend allow the opportunity to win some amazingly historic Trophies and Cups. Both pilots and navigators get a fabulous Trophy and Platter to keep as a reminder of their achievments.
Fun pictures from the weekend !
Congratulations to all the winners, and a big thank you to all the competitors,
ground crew and all at Sherburn in Elmet Airport.
