Reflections of 2016 strive for excellence and innovation in 2017 The end of the year is a time of reflection. As I look back at 2016, I am proud of the individual and team accomplishments at SHC. It is hard to pick one highlight. Here are a few of many high points in the year: Three brave staff jumped into Chippewa Lake to raise funds through the Polar

Bear Plunge while many co-workers volunteered at the event. (I hear we have a team of jumpers preparing for the Plunge on January 28, 2017.)

Our staff mentored high school students as future direct support professionals. Seeing individuals volunteering at the Medina Half Marathon. They made sure

every runner had plenty of food to refuel at the end of their run. Individuals could be found volunteering all around the community in 2016.

Walking into MedinaMade and hearing “Welcome to MedinaMade. Can I help you?” Individual em-

ployees have been building skills over the year and beginning their search for community retail jobs.

Seeing numerous SHC staff recognized at the Fall OPRA conference for their work as direct sup-

port professionals, front line supervisors, behind the scenes work and their Advance Leadership training.

The second annual Boo Bash. It is what can happen when we gather as a community. What fun! Seeing the creativity and dedication in our staff who planned holiday meals and events, developed

new community opportunities, reworked schedules and came in extra hours to assure individual needs were met.

We are so blessed by the indi-

viduals, families, staff, volunteers

and community supporters who

make up the SHC family. What

we accomplish is a result of each

and every person that is part of

SHC. The overwhelming support

SHC receives is also evident in

the countless lists of donors in

each issue of the newsletter.

Your gifts help support our mis-

sion and vision in providing ser-

vices to people with disabilities.

As the year came to an end and

the news media highlighted the

celebrities who passed away in

2016, I, too, thought of the mem-

bers of the SHC family that we

lost. Jon, Greg, Michael, Brian,

Marianne and Kathy, all a part of

SHC, passed away this year.

Our lives are richer for having

known them.

In 2017 we will continue to strive

for excellence, innovation and to

be mission focused.

Wishing you a wonderful 2017.

Our lives are richer for having known them.

Melanie A. Kasten-Krause

executive director

It was another fantastic year for SHC’s Holiday Fashion Show & Luncheon. The event raised more than $38,000, thanks to the generous support of sponsors, raf-fle donors, luncheon guest, models, vendors and the most amazing volunteer committee! Proceeds benefit the SHC Foundation which supports critical pro-grams and services for people with disabilities that let them live, learn, earn and play in their communities. Please see pages 4 and 5 for a list of event supporters.

The success of this event would not be possible without:

Our dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly gather-ing raffle donations and turning them into beautiful prize packages, while oth-ers make sure every detail of the fashion show and luncheon is covered

Peebles Department Store, in Wadsworth, for providing the fashions

The volunteer models for sharing their time, including Jen Toohey, radio host at Cleveland’s Star 102

Angel Brown, owner of Sa-lon Evangelene, and her staff of stylists and makeup artists for giving the models their runway look, and,

The incredible support from our community!

Thank You!

Polar Bear Plunge Benefits SHC/The Arc

The Chippewa Lake Lions Club selected SHC/The Arc of Medina County as one of the charities again this year for its 2017 Polar Bear Jump & 5K Run/Walk. Register online or join the crowd to cheer on your favorite runner, walker or jumper at the corner of Longacre and Beachside Blvd. in Chippewa Lake.

Save The Date! Every year we celebrate National Developmental Disability Awareness month in March. The DD Awareness and Advocacy Day’s theme for 2017 is “Side by Side” and will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Ohio Statehouse. As advocates, we can help others understand that people with disabilities each have their own story to share, and to be heard we all must work “Side by Side” to make a difference in their lives.
