Script: Pet shops

Most pet shops buy their puppies from puppy farms. A puppy farm is a factory that breeds dogs for a high demand market such as hybrid dogs commonly known as “designer dogs”. Designer dogs are bred in masses. An Australian puppy farm can have up to 1000 breeding dogs to keep up with demand. The Puppy farm breeding dogs are kept in cages for their entire lives without any regard to their welfare. There only purpose is to produce puppies that are in high demand.

Pet stores won't leave their cages empty. The money you spend on your puppy goes right back to the puppy mill operator and ensures they can continue breeding and treating dogs inhumanely.

Script: The internet and papers

Puppy farms also sell their puppies over the internet and the classifies. Never buy a puppy without seeing it first and knowing where it comes from.

Script: Breeder

Reputable registered breeders have waiting lists - they do not always have puppies available. Reputable registered breeders are aware of their responsibilities to the puppies they breed. They will show an interest in puppy's future and will always take a dog they have bred back if there is a need for re-homing. Good breeders should be extremely knowledgeable about their breed and able to answer any questions that you have.

A reputable breeder will also ensure you do not take your puppy home too early to ensure it gets early socialization with its siblings. A puppy removed from its litter too early may fear other dogs for the rest of its life. While six weeks is the time many puppies are taken to new homes, many breeders prefer to retain the pup until they are around nine weeks old.

Script: Rescue shelter

Consider adopting a dog from a shelter. You will be saving a dog. There are estimate 60 000 pets a year being put down every year due to overpopulation. Most of these dogs are designer dogs which have been bought from pet shops and bred by puppy farms.
