We all feel the same commitment toCare for our families. Helping you meet your insurance needs is part of my commitment to you.

In a copyrighted Smyrna Historical Societypublication entitled How the Jonquil City Got It’sNickname, author Harold Smith is quoted asfollows:

Traditional history says the Jonquils wereintroduced to Smyrna by Mr. and Mrs. S. A.(Mommy & Daddy) Taylor formerly of Decatur. Theymoved to Smyrna in the late 1880’s after purchasing80 acres on the south side of town. Their house andfarm were located where Brawner Hospital is now.

They got the Mommy and Daddy nicknameswhen they were supervisors for a MethodistChildren’s home in Decatur.

The Taylor’s had one son who lived inSpokane, Washington, and it is said that he sent hisparents a burlap bag full of Jonquil bulbs fromthere. The Taylor’s shared the bulbs with theirfriends and neighbors and the bulbs quicklymultiplied and continued to come back every yearwith very little care.

The Taylor’s moved to Spokane in 1907, butother Smyrna residents continued to plant andshare the bulbs which produced the beautifulyellow blooms every spring.

In 1937, some Smyrna ladies got together toorganize a garden club and the name adopted wasThe Jonquil Garden Club. It is still a very active partof the Smyrna’s civic life.…….Lives & Times, Volume 15, Number 34…July-August 2000

Compliments of the late, great Harold Smith, my friendand advocate of the city. May he rest in peace….

How the Jonquil City Got Its Nickname SMILE BECAUSE HE LIVEDYou can shed tears that he is goneor you can smile because he lived. You can close your eyes and praythat he will come back or you canopen your eyes and see all that hehas left. Your heart can be emptybecause you can’t see him, or youcan be full of the love that youshared. You can turn your back ontomorrow and live yesterday, or youcan be happy for tomorrow becauseof yesterday. You can remember himand only that he is gone or you cancherish his memory and let it live on.You can cry and close your mind, beempty and turn back, or you can dowhat he would want: Smile, openyour eyes, love and go on.…….…………AUTHOR UNKNOWN

Origins of Father’s DayFather’s Day contrary to popular misconception was notestablished as a holiday in order to help greeting cardmanufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a “father’s day”was first proposed there were no Father’s Day cards.Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a“father’s day” in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day tohonor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil Warveteran, was widowed when his wife(Mrs. Dodd’s mother)died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left toraise the newborn and his other five children by himself on arural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Doddbecame an adult that she realized the strength andselflessness her father had shown in raising his children as asingle parent. The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 inSpokane, Washington. At about the same time in varioustowns and cities across America other people werebeginning to celebrate a “father’s day”. In 1924, PresidentCalvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’sDay. Finally, in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed apresidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June asFather’s Day.Father’s Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers and adult males friends are all observed onFather’s Day.

This was also the period when the firstmodern credit card was introduced.

The first photocopying machine wascreated in the 1950’s. However, it did takeconsiderable time for the popularity of themachine to spread all over.
