AVERILL PARK ART STUDENTS:

AMONG THE TOP IN THE REGION

Averill Park Art students always put forth their best when it comes to their artwork, but duringthe first week of November they put in extra time and effort to put together a portfolio thatwould be presented to multiple college representatives from around the country.Sage Portfolio Day is held every year at Sage College for students to show their artwork tocollege representatives in hopes of getting constructive criticism that may or may not lead toacceptance to an art program or possible art scholarships. Colleges like St. Rose, Hartwick,Syracuse, Hartford, SUNY New Paltz, Potsdam, Purchase and many others, were visiting theSage campus to review art student’s work.Great feedback was given to some of our Averill Park art students, whether it was advice oncomposition, line relationships, or foreshortening. Students left with ideas about how to expandtheir portfolios and develop themselves more as artists, this increases the chances for successfulreviews in the future. When reviewing portfolios, colleges are scoring students on formal skill level, a willingness totake risks, and overall presentation. Colleges want to see how students present their work tothe reviewer.Beyond constructive criticism, a lot of Averill Park students were instantly accepted into somecollege’s art programs. Out of seventeen students that were able to attend the event, at leasttwelve of them were told they would be accepted into one or more art programs. Congratulationsto those accepted and an overall congrats to all the art students who attended, your hard workis evident, keep making great art!~Courtney Lou Kane(APHS Arts Editor)

AN OPEN LETTER TO RICHARD PEARCEDear Richard: I suspect this letter may resonate with manylocal folks who made the drive down Palmer Rd, pulled up to thedriveway, and found the For Sale sign. No more Christmastrees available on your beautiful postcard piece of land. So awonderful Holiday Tradition comes to a close.I arrived that day with my daughter and her family. Knowingthat recent years gave my grandchildren a chance for thememories that I built with their parents is special to me. As wetook one last look around, your caring touch, remained visiblein the deer netting, the barbered lawns, and the neat woodshed. My memories and appreciation are only a spot in the warmpicture you have painted in many lives. It’s obvious how muchit meant to you to keep at it in such fine style over the decades. The giveaway price which you never changed might have barely

covered your costs, but gaveevidence that you profitedelsewhere from your efforts.I trust this f inds youcomfortable and happy, andlooking positively forward tothe days ahead. The photosand memories of our time withyou, will remain a warmingcomponent of my family’sHoliday Traditions as we allmove forward. So here’swishing you a MerryChristmas, and Happy NewYear from all three generationsof my family who wil lremember the treat of goingout into the woods andtagging a tree to dream aboutfor weeks until the Holidayfinally arrived.~Mike O’Brien, EastGreenbush

NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL

ILLNESS OFFERS HOLIDAY SUPPORT

This is the season everyone is “supposed” to look forward to... theholidays. However, when we are dealing with mental illness in ourhomes, it can also be overwhelming, stressful, chaotic, sad, scary, and totally emotional. When everyone else is shopping and singingcarols, we are worrying if we are going to make it through withouta crisis intervention.I’m here to let you know that you are not alone... these feelings arenormal and okay. Don’t feel guilty for them, don’t ignore them, butdon’t stress over them either... just acknowledge their existenceand remember NAMI Rensselaer County is here if you need somesupport. If you need to just talk during a quiet or stressful moment, feel free to call either 488-6949 or 227-6701. We’d be happy to chatwith you. If you are looking for a time to meet with us, our supportgroup meets at the SUNYA College of Public Health, located at 1University Drive in Rensselaer on the first and third Wednesdayseach month. The most important message we can give you is totake care of YOU first... everything else is secondary. Every yearwe stress that we won’t be ready come the day of festivities and yetwe do... just remember that. Since we aren’t probably going tohave many roses to stop and smell, let’s change it to “Stop andenjoy the sounds and lights around you”... this time is blessed, nomatter what your spiritual belief is. Take a deep breath, relax, andenjoy the beauty around you.Happy holidays and take care of you,~Mary Beth Honsinger & Mary Crowley, NAMI Support GroupFacilitators

RENSS. CITY REPUB. COMMITTEE

WORKING HARD FOR ITS CONSTITUENTSLetter to the Editor: During the last two years, the RensselaerCity Republican Committee has worked to build a solidprofessional organization, reinforce relations with our countycommittee and elected officials, make our presence visible atofficial city meetings, raise resources for expanded future teamefforts and attract new candidates and new Republican voters.Under the leadership of Chair Lou Lourinia, Vice ChairErnie Dambrose, and Treasurer Bernie Haskell, these goalshave achieved limited success and show promise of concreteresults in the next two years. Committee members haveattended all county fundraisers during this period and havesupported the congressional campaigns of Ted Danz and ChrisGibson, State Senator Roy McDonald, Assemblyman SteveMcLaughlin, County Sheriff Jack Mahar, and District AttorneyCandidate Joel Abelove. Moreover, committee members havesolidified relations with County Executive Kathy Jimino, CountyClerk Frank Merola, County Legislator Mike Stammel, and County Chairman Neil Kelleher and John Rustin. At City Council meetings, Lou Lorinia and former Fourth WardCouncil Candidate Dave Gardner have consistently called formore open government, establishment of a city Police blotter, and ward reports. At City Planning Commission meetings, LouLorinia and the “Concerned Citizens of Rensselaer” organizationcalled for denial of authorization of the proposed asphalt plantin the City’s Port District. In October, the committee conducted voter registrationefforts in the area known as “The Mansions” and other northernneighborhoods of Rensselaer. Most recently, the committee introduced Mrs. Colleen Piersonas our 2013 candidate for Mayor at a December 8thFundraiser at “Angle B’s Coffee Beanery” on WashingtonAvenue. This was the third successful fundraiser at thatlocation. With deepening confidence, we will continue our efforts toexpand and offer the voters of our city a brighter opportunityfor good government in the next two years than is currentlythe case.~Bill Lithgow - Member of the Rensselaer City RepublicanCommittee

Wrestling fire? No, I think it’s wrestling and fire fighting is whatthis week’s athlete is all about.Jonathan Carroll, a senior at Averill Park High School, is avarsity wrestler and has been since his sophomore year. Thisis pretty impressive given the fact that he only started wrestlingone year prior to that. Jon is also a volunteer Fire Fighter atthe Wynantskill Fire Department in his spare time and he enjoysgoing on calls and training with the department. He enjoys firefighting so much that next year his plan is to attendSchenectady Community College and major in Fire ProtectionTechnology. Jon’s favorite subject in school this year is forensics. He is also taking Public Speaking, Detective Speaking, Statistics,Economics, and Participation in Government.Jon is a positive athlete that works really hard on and off themat. He is a busy kid with all of the pre-season workouts thathe does with his team, but he finds time to volunteer andspend time with his friends and family. Carroll’s favorite part ofwrestling is competing in the matches and working hard at alltimes. “Being dedicated means that you have to work withyour team no matter what, and you have to go to every teamevent like practices and competitions,” replied Jon when askedabout what it means to him to be a dedicated athlete. He would like to thank all of his coaches for his success on themat and for everything that they have taught him aboutwrestling. Jon says that his Dad inspires him to be the personthat he is today and that there are also many other peoplethat act as role models for him. Even though Jon won’t bewrestling in college next year, he is still really looking forwardto his senior year on the team, and he is excited for his seasonof competitions to begin.Best of luck to Jon and the rest of the Averill Park Varsity teamin their 2011-2012 season.

The Perfect ChristmasThe Perfect ChristmasThe Perfect ChristmasThe Perfect ChristmasThe Perfect ChristmasI heard a talk the other dayThat really hit the spot. The subject was at ChristmasWhat’s important and what’s not.

We all seek the perfect Christmas,Each year better than before,As thought it’s competitionAnd someone’s keeping score.

We all search for perfect Christmas giftsAnd perfect decorations. We’ll host the perfect partyWhere we’ll eat just taste sensations.

We’ll take the perfect photoFor our perfect Christmas card.Enclose a perfect poem that rhymes,It shouldn’t be that hard.

But things don’t always go as plannedWhen life gets in the wayAnd then our dreams of grandeur crashAnd some may feel dismay.

That’s when the gift of Christmas comes,When we’re humbled by our fall,And maybe we will realizeGod loves us one and all.

When we work hard and all goes well,Exactly as we planned,We take credit for the processThere’s no magic in the land.

It’s when we screw up royallyAnd Christmas still comes just the sameWe receive more joy at ChristmasAnd not just all the blame.

This year my wife was bakingfor our church’s Christmas brunch.I shouldn’t have tried to help her,I should have listened to that hunch.

She’d worked for hours creatingThis lovely casserole.I just had to transport it,It was a simple role.

She warned me it was hot,I should have listened more. The pan got out of balanceAnd it splattered on the floor.

She walked away and let me cleanThe big mess I had made.I’m glad she left. I couldn’t standThe fuming if she stayed.

Later when I found herShe looked me in the eyeAnd then broke out in laughter,I was expecting her to cry.

I’m glad she has a sense of humor,I know that God does too.I’m sure that he is laughing,At all the things we do.

May you have a perfect Christmas,Celebrate our savior’s birthAnd even when you mess upThere still is joy on earth.

WHEREIN LIES THE TRUTH

Letter to the Editor: As I attempt to inform others of things I know to be true, the refrain I mostoften hear is: How do I know who is telling the truth? It’s not an easy question to answer. Isometimes resort to a little humor: Who are you going to believe, me, or your own lying eyes?In many cases we can do some research to find solid evidence, but even then, if the liars aredeeply or pathologically committed, they will resort to suggesting that there is no right or wrong– only differences of opinion. With the main-stream media being so deeply committed to the principles, policies and presidentsthey have ushered in, they seem to have adopted a “to-the-death” mentality. They have lostall credibility with anyone who cares enough to scratch the surface of what they are trying tosell; but as long as one person will believe them, they will carry on. They will become delusionaland that’s when they become most transparent. That’s what we are witnessing in the “occupy” movement. This movement was organized andfunded by the same left-wing millionaires and billionaires that are responsible for destroying oureconomy for their own profit. It was created in a desperate attempt to counter the popular andincreasingly powerful grass-roots TEA Party movement. Some mayors and other politicians supported the occupiers and attempted to create politicalcoat tails for exploitation. The problem was that the occupiers resented being labeled as the“99%”. They were proud to be on the radical fringe. The charade began to collapse when multi-millionaire Michael Moore tried to put his arms around them. They rejected him and the otherinterloping political opportunists when they realized they were being used. That’s when the encampments became a political liability and were disbanded by the hiddenhand that had been their genesis. Their dreams of glorious revolution dissolved into 15 minutesof infamy - an unfortunate distraction from the reality that the true ninety-nine percent willcontinue to advance.~David Crawmer, www.republicamerica.usEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or theStaff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

CLINTON HEIGHTS FIRE DEPT.RESPONDS TO FAMILY WITH LOSS of

HOME for the HOLIDAYSIn response to a serious structure fire Monday evening,December 12th, the Clinton Heights Fire Department (CHFD)has undertaken an emergency fund drive for the family of fourthat was driven from their home on that winter night. At 9:11pm,the CHFD was dispatched to 223 Maryland Avenue in theHampton Manor neighborhood of East Greenbush having beentoned out for a working structure fire. First arriving crewsfound the rear of the residence as well as the roof in flames.Quick work by Clinton Heights with the assistance of the EastGreenbush Fire and Defreestville Fire had the fire under controlin 15 minutes. The home, however, decorated for the holidays,is now inhabitable until extensive repairs and renovations aremade given the fire, smoke and water damage. The fire fighters were quick to learn that the family included afour year old girl and seven year old boy whose hopes for ahappy Christmas were immediately dashed. The fear andoverwhelming sense of loss was apparent, and even beforethe evening was over, there was talk among the fire fighters ofhow they could be of assistance. Most have families themselvesand are keenly aware of the hopes and expectations of familieswith young children at this special time of year.Mom and Dad and their two children are now residing at a localhotel and will be spending their Christmas there rather than athome. So in response, in conjunction with the Ladies Auxiliary, members of Clinton Heights Fire have begun a drive to insurethis family does not go without the blessings of the Christmasseason. An appeal has begun among neighbors, friends andstrangers alike for clothing, toys, gift cards and financialdonations to assist. The most basics of clothing are beingprovided immediately including winter wear.Mom wears a size “large” shirt, size nine pants and size 5 shoe;Dad a 2X shirt, 40/30 pants and size 13 shoe. The boy, age 7wears a 7/8 boys, and size 1 boys shoe. The young girl, age 4wears a 4/5 girls, and size 10 toddler shoe. Donations of clothingand toys may be made by calling Station 2 at 462-2922 andeither arrange for drop-off or pick-up; or simply drop off whatone might give at the fire house [there is not someone there 24hours so gifts may be left at the door]. On Friday, December23rd, the Auxiliary and Fire Fighters will be at the fire house at65 Sherwood Avenue between 4 and 6pm to accept and wrapwhatever presents of toys and clothing (unwrapped) may bedonated. This will be just in time to assist Santa with his ChristmasEve run!A bank account entitled, “Maryland Avenue Fire Fund”

has been opened at Citizens Bank; any branch will gladly acceptfinancial donations. In the meantime, one may log on to“Clintonheightsfire.com” to learn up to the minute details ofthe drive. District Chief Randy Cherubino echoed the thoughtsof all members of the Department when he said, “The membersof the Clinton Heights Fire Department are always on call torespond to our neighbors in need be it fire or other misfortuneand in doing so we never lose sight of the human dimension ofthe people we are privileged to serve. This especially-untimelyfire brings the best out of us all.”

FIRST ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE

Santa hadhelpers at Heim’sAuto Care thisseason. MattHeim, owner andproprietor, had“Santa Helpers”this year for hisFirst AnnualHoliday Toy Driveto benefit thechildren ofRensselaerCounty.

With help from customers, friends and family, the Toy Drivebrought in close to $8000 worth of toys and gifts for local kids.In addition, guests at the Annual Heim’s Auto Care ChristmasParty paid an “admission fee” of an unwrapped toy.“I’ve been wanting to do this for years,” says Heim. “Nextyear I would like to double what is donated and fill up twogarage bays.”Anyone who is from the Town of North Greenbush, where hisgarage is located, knows that Matt is a very generous andcommunity minded person.Co-sponsoring the toy drive with Heim’s Auto Care, is the42nd Infantry Rainbow Division, based out of Glenmore Rd,North Greenbush. The 42nd Infantry came to pick up twentyfour jumbo bags of toys from the garage and will distributethem to local kids this Christmas. With everything that has happened this year, with the economy, hurricanes, and floods, our community needed to pull togetherto give some children a Very Merry Christmas.

“HIGHWAY TERRORISTS”

Letter to the Editor: Heartache, frustration, deep sense ofloss are the effects heaped upon survivors from those whocause Death injury by over consuming Alcoholic beverages,The “HIGHWAY TERRORISTS”, (Intoxicated drivers) whoabound during the Sacred time of Christmas have no thoughtson the results of their selfishness. This year, I along withvarious E.M.S. services, Police Agencies, Kathy Jimino, ChuckWojton, Stop D.W.I. Director, we handed out over 450 +items at the annual D.W.I. Awareness event requesting carebe used when consuming Alcoholic beverages. Brewers andDistillers spend Billions of dollars pushing their product, and ifone notices, the small print on those “Drink Responsibly” atthe very bottom of the commercial can hardly be read. Werethe other media News Directors @ WTEN<WNYT>WRGB afraidof a financial loss if too much was aired on our “AwarenessDay”????.Please everyone, use common sense when partying! Getting“Smashed” is no way to enjoy Christmas, it’s no way for familiesto be agonized in an E.R. awaiting the positive or negativeresult of the actions of a “HIGHWAY TERRORIST”. We read, see way too often how many are out there with 5,6,7,8,9D.W.I’s and still driving. The law is not tough enough, way toomany District Attorneys pass out reductions beyond belief ie,Reductions in D.W.A.I. drugs down to reckless driving, anddisorderly conduct, this is moving it to a lesser crime, reducingthe “Aggravated D.W.I.”. Sealing the records of the “HIGHWAYTERRORISTS”, then they get voted back in again; thus provingthat “D.W.I. is America’s only socially acceptable crime ofviolence”.~Bill Dikant - D.W.I. SCHODCAK DEM. CLUB ELECTS OFFICERS

The Schodack Democratic Club held its annual election ofofficers and discussed the local election results at its Decembermeeting earlier this month. “Though this year’s election resultswere not the victory we hoped for, there is definite cause foroptimism in the final tallies,” said Town Democratic ChairElizabeth Gable. “Frank Curtis was believed to be invinciblebecause of his years in service to the Town and his long-timeincumbent status. He and Linda were lined up head to head onthe ballot and Linda only lost by 214 votes, which in ourtraditionally Republican town is a very good showing for theDemocrats, especially up against the incumbent we assumedwas bullet-proof.” The final numbers were: Linda 1467, FrankCurtis 1681, Mike Kenney 2068.The Schodack Democrats thank the many residents whosupported Linda Underwood’s campaign with their donations, volunteer time and votes and extend their congratulations toboth Mr. Curtis and Mr. Kenney on their re-election.Club members held their annual election of officers. Retaininghis seat as Club president was Ray Ludwig. Olaf Stacklebergand Linda Underwood also retained their positions as treasurerand secretary respectively. Joe Grimaldi took over the reins asVice President for his first time as an officer and Mickey Doylewas elected as Assistant Secretary, also her first time as anofficer.Club members unanimously voted to make Dev Tobin, aRensselaer City resident, an honorary club member to thankhim for his three years of service as Linda Underwood’scampaign manager and treasurer.Upcoming club events include a party and another food drive, both after the holidays.
