I’m pleased to welcome Robert Rings as Nassau’s new-est Councilman. It was my honor to swear-in Bob atour November meeting following his recent election. As many know, he was elected to fill the vacancycreated by the passing of Councilman Don Carpentier. We wish Bob all the best and we look forward toworking with him during his term of service. At our last meeting, the Board passed the 2015 Town
Budget. We anticipate another fiscally challenging year ahead as we face continually shrinkingrevenues and unfunded state mandates. However, we will meet the challenges we face, and Ithank the Board for continuing to provide opportunities for the community while controllingspending. You may have noticed the significant construction going on at Town Hall. Thanks to a gift to theTown, we are insulating, rewiring and sheet rocking the remainder of the unfinished rooms inthe building. We are also preparing to implement the restoration plan for the façade of thebuilding which will return that part of the structure to its 19th century appearance. Plans forthis project, again utilizing a gift and not taxpayer funds, were completed by CouncilmanCarpentier just two weeks before his passing. As we complete this project, we honor Don’slegacy and gifts to our community.During construction, the second floor of the building is closed and the offices of the TownSupervisor, Supervisor’s Clerk, Deputy Supervisor and Building Department will be located atthe Highway Department. The Assessors will be downstairs at Town Hall. The Board is in the process of creating a Burden Lake Sewer District Zoning Review Committee.Several zoning applications for property changes have been submitted to the Town since thesewers became operational. The current residential zoning is going to be reviewed to see ifthere may be any changes that would be appropriate and beneficial for residents of this area.I have asked that the committee be weighted with four residents of the Sewer District with onemember each from the Zoning, Planning and Town Boards. This committee is expected to becreated at our December meeting and will be charged with making recommendations for theTown Board to consider. There are a great deal of programs planned for the winter/spring months. If you are interestedin assisting with these opportunities, please contact my office. We are always happy to plugresidents into community projects.

THE RED HERRING OF EQUAL PAYLetter to the Editor: Ages ago, if a farmer wanted boots hewould often trade an agreed upon amount of produce with theshoemaker for them. If he had high quality potatoes, he couldget a better pair of boots than the farmer who had a badseason for his crop of corn. And if the shoemaker in one villagewas not as talented or had inferior leather to the shoemaker inanother, he in turn had less value to trade with. It was thefree market in its purest form.Over time, the need for essential services and monetarysystems lead to the development of governments, from clansand kingdoms to democracies and republics, but none haveever been as close to perfect as the constitutional republic ournation’s founders developed. They created a constitutionalrepublic instead of a democracy in order to assure individualcitizens of the fundamental economic freedoms they have anatural right to enjoy. They were more wise than to create thekind of democracy we are gravitating toward today wheregroups of individuals are being given “rights” superior toindividuals.Democratic principles of majority rule, egalitarianism and wealthredistribution, even in their purest unadulterated form, devoidof their inherent corruption, are unjust in that there will alwaysbe people who are capable of high achievement who will bestifled unfairly. Nobody benefits from achievement that issuppressed...except for the suppressors themselves.Democratic politicians say that women are not being paid equallyto men but there are as many men not being paid equally toother men as there are women being paid less than otherwomen. The fundamental problem as I see it is that groups arebeing given artificial rights superior to natural individual rights.Voting blocs are being purchased at the expense of theindividual.Concerns over equal pay and a minimum wage are a sorrypolitical distraction from the bigger employment problem… ashortage of employers. Our economy is overrun with availableemployees and our government is stifling employers with taxesand regulations. It’s a case of more supply than demand andthat reduces value. Government can’t solve this problembecause government is the problem.~ David Crawmer, www.republicamerica.usEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLOOMING GROVE
REFORMED CHURCH
Not only people celebrate birthdays. This year the BloomingGrove Reformed Church celebrates the 200th anniversary ofits founding. The history of the formation of this church is interesting. Untilthe 1790’s, many people in the North Greenbush areaworshiped across the river at the Dutch Reformed Church inAlbany. As the Wynantskill area population grew, members leftthe Albany church and formed their own congregation inWynantskill and many people from the North Greenbush areajoined this congregation. The Wynantskill Church shared a pastor with the GreenbushReformed Church and housed their Pastor at Blooming Grove, which is now Defreestville-halfway between the two churches.By 1814, the church membership had grown to a point wherethey felt they should have their own pastor and congregation. This was accomplished in late 1814, 200 years ago.As with many churches, there were internal squabbles: churchminutes record that Betsy Deforrest was disciplined for“neglecting the stated ordinances of the church” and for stealingseveral items from a store in Albany. Deacon Jacob Hogle wascharged with “falsehood” in certain conversations with fellowmen. My favorite is a complaint from a neighbor that he couldsee the pastor’s laundry hanging in his back yard. The first building on the church’s property was completed inJanuary 1817. By the 1860’s, the original church building wasfound to be inadequate for the congregation’s needs and itwas torn down and a new building was erected in 1867.However, on New Year’s Eve, 1910, the sanctuary burned.Only the communion ware and the steeple bell were saved. Fora short time, the congregation worshiped in the schoolhousebuilding just south of the church property. Because of theeconomic conditions of the times and the onset of World War I,the new sanctuary was not completed until 1925.Other improvements to the church property include aneducational wing, and a new parsonage built in 1962, officespace in the upper level of the educational wing, a SamaritanCounseling service and a solar panel system. Also, as the area demographics have changed, the churchpopulation is different. The first members were predominantlyfrom farming families. The last farming family sold their farmjust before 2010. What changes will Blooming Grove Reformedsee in the next 200 years?

NATIONAL AWARD EARNED by
THE HUDSONIANThe Hudsonian, Hudson Valley Community College’s studentnewspaper, placed fourth in the Best of Show competition for two-year school tabloids at the fall College Media Association/AssociatedCollege Press National Conference. Colleges and universities fromaround the country attended the event held last week inPhiladelphia, PA. Awards were given to the top 10 entries. Thenational honor marks the highest placement in the competition forThe Hudsonian since a tenth place finish in 2011. The winning issueincludes stories about START-UP NY tax-free zones, the first femalehockey player at the college, a student from Guinea raising moneyfor those affected by the Ebola virus, as well as several campus andathletic events. The Hudsonian is an independent and student-managed newspaperpublished weekly during the academic year. It first was issued in1961, following The Technician, the student newspaper when thecollege was known as Hudson Valley Technical Institute (1954-1959). Patrick Gareau, an Individual Studies major, serves as editor-in-chief. Rachel Bornn and Jaime Barrett, associate professor andassistant professor, respectively, in the Department of English,Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language, are advisors. “Unlike many other two-year colleges where the newspaper isorganized through a Journalism class and supervised by a paidmedia adviser, The Hudsonian staff is strictly a club and participationis voluntary. Most members are not even Journalism majors, juststudents looking for workplace experience and a supportivecommunity on campus. For years, we have worked to make ournewsroom an outstanding learning environment. At a two-yearcommunity college, that is challenging, but I think we have reallyaccomplished that now, said Rachel Bornn. “This particular staff is exceptional in their ability to cooperate, sniff out news and write engaging, articulate news copy. Much ofthis year’s improvement is because of the editorial staff’s drive forsuccess, professionalism, and commitment to accurate, unbiasedreporting focused on the hyper-local community here at the college. They’ve been able to engage their audience and produce a strongpaper every week. This group of students is representative of thebest here at Hudson Valley and this official recognition is a greatmotivator for the students. I am very proud of the staff’s work thissemester so far and eagerlyexpect continued growth andimprovement this year,” Bornncontinued.
