SIGN THEFTS ENDANGER LIVES – TOWNS

ASK THE PUBLIC TO ASSIST IN EFFORTS

The Towns of Sand Lake and Nassau, like othertowns, have experienced a significant increase inroad sign thefts. The thefts to date are in themany thousands of dollars. We need the public toassist our communities in apprehending those

responsible.Recently, because of the theft of a stop sign, there was a nearcollision in the Town of Nassau. This rash of thefts has led tothe filing of a police reports and our town governments areseeking the maximum criminal charges. The theft of road signs endangers the residents of ourcommunities by delaying emergency services when they areunable to locate those in need. The theft of a stop sign couldeasily lead to death and serious injuries. Those involved in thistype of theft should know that they are endangering publicsafety. The public is encouraged to contact the State Police in SandLake (674-4441) or Schodack (732-4777) if they noticesuspicious activity related to sign thefts or have any information.New York State Penal Law allows for a $1000 fine and/orimprisonment for each sign theft. The State Police and our communities need the public’s help infinding those responsible before a tragedy occurs. Weencourage anyone with information to contact the State Police.~ Flora Fasoldt, Town of Sand Lake Supervisor and DavidFleming, Town of Nassau Supervisor

STAMMEL SEEKS IMPROVED FIRE

PROTECTION FOR SO. AREAS OF RENSS.The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a resolution at theJuly 10 legislative meeting sponsored by Legislator Mike Stammelthat seeks to improve fire protection in the southern area of thecity. The resolution followed a fire on July 1 that damaged severalhomes on Aiken Avenue. Residents and Stammel said response tothe blaze took more than several minutes and may be due torelocated fire houses and ongoing road work.“We hope city leaders review their ability to respond to fires in thesouthern end of the city and consider changes that allow for aquicker response,” said StammelStammel was among the first on the scene of the July 1 fire andhelped residents get to safety. Stammel said he is concerned aboutthe amount of time it took to get city fire apparatus to the scene ofthe fire. Some of the delay may be caused by prolongedconstruction in the downtown, which hurts response times. Thecity administration has also closed fire houses which has alsolengthened response times. At the time of the fire, city fire unitswere responding to an emergency medical call. The fire occurredin the Fort Crailo neighborhood, which is located on the other sideof Routes 9 & 20 from the two city fire houses. There are also majorroad and bridge construction projects taking place between theneighborhood and the fire houses. Adding to that is the closure ofthree fire houses south of Partition Street. “I am worried about thetime it takes to respond to a fire in this end of town. There is aconsiderable distance for fire units to travel, through multipleconstruction zones, and a number of residents are worried aboutthe response time,” said Stammel.“Because of the road construction projects and closure of the firehouses, this section of the city is located a good distance awayfrom help when it is needed. The city should give some thought tostationing emergency apparatus closer to this area. In the event ofan emergency elsewhere, mutual aid can be initiated,” addedStammel. The Rensselaer Eagles are sponsoring a fundraiser for the victimsof the fire. Donations can be dropped off at the Eagles lodge at 851Broadway and checks made out to Rensselaer Eagles Fire Fund. A

fundraiser will be held at a later date.

We have also authorized a grantapplication for construction funds. We have completed the audits of town departments and theJustice Court and have begun review of the necessary re-pairs to the meeting room at the town hall. BUILDING BRIDGES OF LOVE ANDFORGIVENESS

On Sunday, July 22, 2012, the Nassau and StuyvesantReformed Churches will continue its reflection on Paul’s letterto the church in Ephesus, the city where he spent almost threeyears in helping to build the church. Ephesians 2:11-22 focusesupon the old divisions between Jews and Gentiles; and howthey have been bridged through Christ. It brings to ourunderstanding that it is because of Christ that both groups arealso reconciled to God. In the sermon titled, “Building Bridgesof Love and Forgiveness,” the Reverend Edward L. Kampen willhelp us to more completely understand that Christians are beingbuilt into a holy temple and a dwelling place for God. It is therethat God will find a unity, a place for all people in theirdifferences. The Nassau Reformed Church worships at 11 a.m. in its chapel,43 Church St., one half mile east of the only traffic light in thevillage. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church worships at 9 a.m.in its sanctuary at the corner of Church Street and Route 9J inthe hamlet of Stuyvesant.

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES PROGRAM

NEEDS YOUR HELP

CoNSERN S-U will be holding our free school supply programagain this August. This program allows students to get theschool supplies that they need and at no charge to them. Theprogram has been extremely successful in the past, due largelyto the wonderful support we have gotten from area churchesand organizations. So, once again, we are appealing to youfor help.We will be setting up our “store” in August and need thefollowing items: 3 subject notebooks, 3 ring binders (1 ½ inch,2 inch, and 3 inch), scientific calculators (price around $10),pocket folders, glue sticks, colored pencils, markers, highlighters, subject dividers, zippered pencil cases, loose leafpaper (wide rule only), scissors, flash drives, protractors, pens, pencils… and especially new backpacks. The cost of school supplies can make it very difficult for lowincome families to purchase what is needed. Our free supplyprogram not only allows the students to be prepared for thefirst day of school but it also helps those students to start theschool year in a positive way.Last year we served 286 students and we are hoping to serveeven more this year. Any help you can give us will be greatlyappreciated! Our store will be held on August 28. Please havesupplies to CoNSERNS-U by August 22. Thank you.For more information, please call CoNSERNS-U at 463-8571 orSandy Barnhart at 674-2747.

QUESTION: My supervisor at work is constantly asking me tomulti-task, but when I try to do more than one thing at a time,I feel stressed by the pressure to perform in that way and Ibecome less precise in carrying out my assignments. Is thatnormal? N. Thomas, Brainard, NYANSWER: Even though our culture encourages us to multi-task, medical science has proven that it’s impossible for thehuman brain to do more than one thing at a time. Even thecomputer, which is a creation of the human mind and can docalculations very quickly, is always focusing its attention ononly one thing: one or zero. Actually, the more we ask our brainto multi-task, a large amount of adrenaline is pumped into thebody so that the brain can quickly move back and forth betweentwo objects. Over time, the adrenaline rush depresses ourimmune system and results in depression. A new study hasrecently found that the real key to high levels of precise andcreative work without stress is to train the mind to meditate.David Levy, a computer scientist and professor with theInformation School at the University of Washington, found thatmeditators were able to stay on task longer and were lessdistracted. Levy and his co-authors discovered that meditationalso improved test subjects’ memory while reducing their stress. In his study, Levy had one group of human resource managersundergo eight weeks of meditation training. A second groupgot eight weeks of body-relaxation training, and a third groupreceived no initial training but then was given the same trainingas the first group after eight weeks. Subjects were given astressful test on their multitasking abilities before and aftereach eight-week period. They had to use email, calendars, instant messaging, phones and word-processing tools toperform common office duties. Researchers evaluated theirspeed, accuracy and number of times they switched tasks. Theparticipants also were asked to record their stress levels andmemory performance while doing the jobs. Researchers foundthat the meditation group not only had lower stress levels duringthe multitasking tests, they were also able to concentratelonger without being distracted. But for the other two groups— those who received relaxation breathing training and thosewho had no initial training — stress did not go down. However, when the third group finally received meditation training aftereight weeks, their stress levels also decreased. In addition, the study found that those who meditated also spent moretime on tasks, didn’t switch between different chores as oftenand took no longer to get their work done than the otherparticipants. Meditation is a lot like doing reps at a gym. Itstrengthens your attention muscle. The meditation and easy-gentle yoga curriculum at the AmericanMeditation Institute is accredited by the American Medical Association,Albany Medical College and the N.Y.S. Nurses Association. It is alsoendorsed by nationally recognized physicians Dr. Oz, Dean Ornish MDand Bernie Siegel MD.

DOGS IN HOT CARS

Letter to the Editor: Everysummer it is the samething. Animal controloff icers and police arecalled to restaurant andshopping mall parking lotsto rescue dogs left invehicles. While it wouldseem just common sense

not to leave an animal in a car in this weather it is still going onwith frightening regularity. All manner of excuses are offeredincluding the most popular: “I was just going to be in the storefor a few minutes”, “I left the windows down” and “I parked inthe shade”.Just a few minutes can be a few minutes too long since a car islike a hot house trapping heat inside. On a 75 degree day, acar can reach 100 degrees in only 10 minutes, 82 degreesoutside, 109 inside the car, and so on. When the windows areopen, there may be a difference of a few degrees, the samewith shade, but not enough to make a deadly situation safe. What can happen? Your dog can die. Your car window can besmashed by police in order to get your dog out. You can getarrested for animal cruelty. You can tell your story to anunsympathetic judge. You can pay a fine. It is against the lawto leave your companion animal in a hot car. There is no excusefor it.~ Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

RENSSELAER COUNTY OFFERS HELP FOR

SENIORS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino outlined the stepsthe County is taking to help seniors better handle hightemperatures.“When the temperature rises to the levels predicted, takingproper precautions is vital to preventing the effects of excessiveheat,” said Jimino. “By following some simple safety measuresthe severe health problems including sunstroke, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and possibly even death that can occur will beavoided.”Jimino warned that everyone can be affected by the high heat, but seniors are especially vulnerable. Safety tips for hot, steamydays are being distributed to homebound seniors in RensselaerCounty and to the five county-operated senior centers andinformation has been published on the County web site(www.rensco.com) in an effort to help residents cope with theheat. These tips include such precautions as staying indoorswhen temperatures reach 90 degrees; drinking plenty of non-alcoholic liquids to remain hydrated; taking cool baths or showersand allowing the air to dry you; using fans to draw cool air intoyour home at night and keeping shades and drapes closed onwindows in direct sunlight; dressing for coolness, includingwearing loose-fitting cotton clothing that is lightweight andlight-colored; taking it easy and eating a well balanced diet.“Our senior centers always provide a wonderful place for seniorsbut on extremely hot days they can provide great place to juststop in and cool off for a bit,” said Jimino. “Seniors with orwithout air conditioning should feel free to come to the seniorcenters between nine and three o’clock Monday through Friday. Each center is air conditioned, and even if you don’t want toparticipate in the activities, you can sit and read a book or justenjoy being in a cool atmosphere.”Jimino said the senior center directors have been reaching outto the more vulnerable seniors to ensure that they are preparedfor the hot weather and to invite them to come in to the seniorcenter. Transportation is also available on a limited basis, tosign up for a ride please call your local senior center or theDepartment for Aging’s main number 518-270-2730.
