Turre is from the 7th to the16th; as is the famous Aguilas Carnival. Mojácar’s is from the 8th to 15thand a program of processions and entertainment can be found atwww.mojacar.es. Otheryears of the snake are 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and2001. People born in the year of the Snake are said to be romantic anddeep-thinking, wise and charming, although they tend to dismiss otherstoo quickly and are a bit stingy with money. "phishing" scams the attack isinspiring. Go directly to the website, log in normally, and changeyour password using the genuinewebsite's instructions - withoutclicking on email links.♣And finally, at the time of goingto press the news was out thatMojácar Mayoress Rosa MariaCano summoned our Chiringuitoowners to the town hall to tell themthat in her quest to eliminate‘botellones’ (street parties), bars arenot going to be allowed to play anymusic at all, even backgroundmusic, unless they are licensed toplay music, or have applied for aspecial events one. Naturally all thebar owners are completely stunnedat the move and feel this could bethe final nail in the coffin forMojácar.A ‘Save Our Sounds’ campaign iscurrently running on facebook. ABBA NIGHT - PAWS & MACS“Working together to make a difference”

Saturday 26th January 2013 was a night that many people will talk about and remember for a long time; a night when MACS and PAWS joined together to put on a Charity Event which can only be described as a massive success. The fundraising teams of both PAWS and MACS worked tirelessly to ensure that a good night was had by all – and it showed, with the marvellous sum of 5,447.03 Euros raised, which will be shared equally between the two charities; the organisation from start to finish was, so to speak, ‘Simply the Best’.Tio Tomas’s Hostal Rural in Turre rocked to the music of Lady Ellen, Tony Justice and Abba Elite. An auction half way through the night helped to swell the fundraising coffers and many people supported the raffle, held throughout the evening, buying lots of tickets and winning lots of fabulous prizes. Food was provided in the form of a selection of tapas and bread and most people availed themselves of this, a bargain at 6€ for 5 very well portioned rations of delicious tapas.The night culminated with people releasing a balloon into the star-filled sky to mark the loss of a loved one or remember those currently struggling with illness.Once the event was advertised tickets were sold quickly and there is no doubt that should ever a function as this be held again, the reputation of MACS and PAWS will precede them and the tickets will fly off the shelves.PAWS and MACS are grateful for the support of local companies in funding the event, namely, Julie Jones Peel for photography. Local people are now aware of the existence of the Vera & District

Lions Club; many ask the questions who are the

Lions? What do they do?

The Vera & District Lions Club was initially created by a few local residents all of which at some time in the past had been members of Lions Clubs in the UK. Our numbers in the past 12 months have grown to 30 members and countless valued supporters throughout the area.

Lions Club members come from all walks of life; they are manual workers, managers, directors, housewives, service personnel, just ordinary people like you and I, from a wide variety of backgrounds all bringing their individual skills together. With one common objective - To look after the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves in our local community.

The Lions Club is split into two main areas - Fundraising, to generate the cash needs of the Club, and Welfare.

Welfare covers a multitude of services for the needy. For instance in the last year we have purchased a specialist wheelchair for an elderly lady that otherwise would have been totally housebound. We purchased much needed software and books for the children’s refuge in Vera. In association with the Vera Red Cross we purchased Christmas presents for a large number of local children that otherwise would not have had a present at all. Many people will be aware of Rick who used to collect money in the Vera area. Rick’s health was deteriorating mainly due to his living conditions and he needed to return to the UK. The Vera & District Lions Club paid for his flight, took him to the airport, met him at Gatwick and took him to a centre in the UK. The club is also becoming increasingly involved in providing food for the hungry throughout our area. The local welfare needs are enormous and we are striving to help as many local people as possible. Vera Lions have collected over 1000 pairs of spectacles for people in various countries that would otherwise not be able to see clearly.

The fundraising committee has organised a busy programme of events for the year which includes a Valentine’s Quiz in Bédar; our games/race nights will be touring the bars in the area, the next one being at the Blue Parrot, Vera Playa in early March. The Half Marathon which due to circumstances had to be cancelled will now be a 10k Fun Run and take place in early April supported by a Craft Fair, BBQ and band at the Vera Hotel. The Craft Fair will be the first of regular monthly Fairs to be held at the Vera Hotel on the first Sunday of the month. Our programme also includes a Bowls Tournament, an Open Golf Trophy and The Last Night at the Proms, so dig out your DJs and flags. Oh, does anybody have a Spitfire for a fly past?

The Vera & District Lions Club meets at the Vera Hotel on the first Wednesday of the

Am I glad to see the back of January! It’s notJanuary itself that I am so keen to be rid of, it’sthat wind that went with it.Not being a sailor, I see very little point in wind.I suppose it’s nice to have a balmy breezewafting across the patio and cooling the feveredbrow on a hot summer’s day – but it never does!Come summer, when there is a need for a bit ofgentle motion in the ground level airstream itdisappears completely, whereas during thewinter months, when we need halcyon days toallow the sun to warm the house through, thewind screams up the valley like a banshee in atemper.I can maintain a relative calm in the face of agale; not so the Higher Authority - She hates it!She claims that it ‘ruins her hair’, and I mustagree she did look a little haystacky on severaloccasions in January.In a spirit of helpfulness I pointed out to her thather hair wasn’t actually ruined, simply a littledishevelled, and that there was nothing wrongwith it that a comb wouldn’t put right.For some reason this displeased her. She fixedme with a pitying stare. ‘You wouldn’t know’she said. ‘You haven’t got enough hair to getdishevelled.’Ouch! I ask you – was that fair? It was the verbalequivalent of a kick in the bollocks.

WARNING ... PROCESSIONARY(FURRY) CATERPILLAR ALERT

The Processionary Caterpillars do notnormally show themselves until earlyspring, most people say March, butdue to the mild winter and the recenthigh winds, these caterpillars are outin full force, nests have been spottedeverywhere so please be on the lookout if you see a nest or a chain of themon the floor.The caterpillars are covered withapproximately 60,000 fine hairs, these

hairs are pointed and contain an urticating toxin, similar to, but farstronger than, that found in nettles. The hairs are easily shed or brokenoff and if they pierce the skin or are inhaled can cause reactions thatcan range from a mild inflammation and irritation through to severeanaphylactic shock. In humans, after contact with the skin a rash soonappears which can be very painful and last for up to three weeks. Simplyby cutting a nest down from the tree, even months after it has beenvacated, can release the hairs into the atmosphere and these can easilybe inhaled causing breathing problems.Both cats and dogs find the long procession of caterpillars hard to resistand often investigate them by sniffing at them and sometimes lickingthem. Inhaling the hairs can severely affect an animal’s breathing andlicking them can cause necrosis of the tongue such that parts of thetongue turn black and may drop off or have to be amputated by aveterinary surgeon. If your pet stops eating and appears distressed donot hesitate to take it to a vet, if caught early enough high doses ofcortisone will prevent permanent damage and your pet should make afull recovery.If you have a problem with these caterpillars you can call the "SEPRONA"branch of the Guardia Civil on 062 and ask them to come and get rid ofthem. For more information about SEPRONA there is a web sitewww.guardiacivil.org although sometimes the site is not available. Yourlocal town hall is another course of action and should have an eradicationsystem in place.A trap you can make yourselves is to take a piece of plastic and make itinto a cone shape, a bit like the vet puts around the neck of an animalafter surgery. It must be large enough to go around the trunk of thetree, make a few small holes around the base of the cone to let out anyrainwater. When the caterpillars climb down the tree they becometrapped in the cone which of course must be shiny and smooth inside sothere is no grip for them to climb out.
