There was plenty of food for thought at the FaringdonChamber of Commerce AGM on 10th March – as allattendees were treated to delicious canapés from thekitchen of award winning chef, Andrew Scott of Restaurant 56. Wealso heard from Ulrike Le Roux, the hotel’s general manager, aboutthe exciting plans to refresh the modern parts of the hotel whichhad just received planning permission. The officers of the Chamber were all re-elected for another year andthe committee was expanded with the addition of three newmembers; Mark Blatch, Karl Booth and Patrick Sharkey. Markrepresents the “The Cellar Bar” and Karl is known to many as theproprietor of the “Faringdon Motorist Centre” and is currentlyplanning to open a new hardware store in the town centre. PatrickSharkey, has been heavily involved in the moulding of the town’sNeighbourhood Plan.As is customary at the AGM, the President and Treasurer bothpresented their reports for the past year. Sarah Allen-Stevens,continuing as treasurer, reported that membership had increasedover the last twelve months and that the Chamber had held themost successful fundraising event in its history, the Charity Ball, which raised over £3,300 for local charities. Paul Brame, who stayson as President, also delivered his report of activities and plans tofurther increase engagement by a series of social and networkingevents and increased use of social media.Other objectives were to refresh connections with FaringdonCommunity College and other neighbouring chambers and businessclubs. The Chamber also voted to formally adopt a new logo, produced by Chamber Member, Alun Williams (see attached). Ournext meeting will be on Monday 14th April at Davenport’s BusinessCentre at 6:30pm. Please come and join us.

Club Chairman Paul Brame, kicked off proceedings andwelcomed three new members on the 3rd March. Each delegate in turn introduced their business and  the kind ofopportunities they’re looking for. Notable contributions included:Mary Thomas of Concise Training has just published a book on WORD 2013which takes the reader through tab by tab. Available as a free downloador ebook from bookboon.com.IT specialist Raoul Van Eindhoven told us the good news that Microsoftoffer a subscription option for licences which can mean a big saving for asmall business. This month’s Guest Speaker was Jackie Fitzgerald of Alchemy BusinessCoaching, who gave us her tips on ‘How to think like a successful businessowner’. In this thought-provoking talk Jackie drew on her experience ofworking with hundreds of small businesses across the Thames Valley. Weall recognised her opening assessment: owners get bogged down in stuffand forget to enjoy their lives! Despite calling her business Alchemy, success is not a mystery! She turned round the standard soul-searchingquestion to ask, ‘what do businesses do right?’ There are plenty ofexamples of good practice out there, and many are quite simple to adopt.Jackie identified 31 practical tips! Top of the list was KISS – Keep It Simple(Stupid). Don’t try to do everything. And help to focus your efforts bydrawing up a simple mission statement with clear but audacious goals! Her tips spanned the gamut from management, staff and team work, tomarketing, sales and profits. Avoid the pitfalls by planning ahead, trackingperformance and cashflow, communication, and training. Don’t be afraidto let go: outsource where necessary, delegate, and ask for help (e.g.from a networking group) – it saves time and money in the long run.Believe in yourself, because if you don’t, how can staff or clients? Anddon’t forget to make time to have a life!FBBC’s next meeting will be on Monday 7th April when each delegate willhave the chance to talk one-to-one with three others of their choice. It’sa great way to pick one another’s brains and to promote your businesslocally. There is no membership fee and no  restrictions on which businessescan  attend. We’re taking a break from our tour of the Scottish islands toturn to the subject of blended whisky. The reason for this isthat we recently ran a Chivas Regal Art of Blending Event, presented by the extremely knowledgeable Phil Huckle. Philgave us all an evening to remember and reiterated themessage that, in the case of blended whisky, the whole isgreater than the sum of its parts.Blends combine the smoothness of grain whisky and theflavour of malt whisky, and the passing of the Spirits Act in1860 that allowed this blending to happen in bond (so noduty had to be paid before the whisky was bottled), alongwith the Phylloxera blight that devastated French vineyardsand thus halted the import of brandy to the UK, acceleratedthe rise of these whiskies and now far more of them are soldworldwide than single malts. The skilled master blenders are looking for a seamlessintegration of the malt and the grain and the Chivas Regalevent gave those present a chance to have a go at this forthemselves. As Phil explained, the grain whisky element isextremely important because as well as bringing smoothnessto the blend it also harmonises the varying amounts ofdifferent single malts that range from sweet and fruitythrough rich and spicy to powerfully peaty. These define thefinal character of the blend but, strangely, because of themagic transformation that happens in the blending processthen although you may not normally choose to drink, forexample, a smoky malt most blends need at least a smallamount of it to provide a ‘lift’ to the finished whisky. The single malts that go in to Chivas Regal are excellentwhiskies in their own right but the value they have forblenders in terms of flavour means that you may not oftenget to taste them. At the heart of the blend is the delightfulStrathisla, a rich, fruity, complex and full bodied whisky withnotes of stewed fruits, barley, toffee, honey and a littlesmoke. Another malt used is one of the blender’s all timefavourites – Longmorn, a joyous riot of fruit, fudge, butterand spice. At the end of the evening as well as tasting the two singlemalts above we also tried the Chivas 12 and 18 year oldwhiskies. With a greater understanding of what blendinginvolves and a lot of preconceptions swept away, theseblends were approached with the respect they deserve andthe 18 year old with its dried fruit, chocolate, smoke and spiceflavours was a particular favourite for many of those present. So next time you’re buying a bottle of whisky remember theskill that goes into producing blended whiskies and give onea try!

'A Home Front Diary 1914-1918' is a fascinating account of WWI, compiled from the diaries of Lillie Scales, recently found by her great-nephew Peter Scales. The history of the conflict at the various Fronts in Europe,Africa and Asia is well-documented and well known, but this book provides a valuable insight into the livesof those who remained behind, and their ceaseless contributions to the war effort. It is particularlyinteresting to read about the war from a woman's perspective, and to learn more of women's involvementduring that time.Lillie was living in North London during the war with her husband, whose age and ill-health meant that hewas not a candidate for the army. One of her many efforts to provide what aid she could to the Allied forces, was to provide food and lodging to many soldiers while they were on leave, or recovering from injury. The

majority who lodged with her were ANZAC soldiers, given the vast distance between them and their families. The number ofthem who returned several times, and those who kept up correspondence with her, is a testament to Lillie's nurturing andsupportive personality, which shines through her writing. She writes often of the courage of others, but she herselfdemonstrates great courage and compassion. Her account never lapses into melodrama, and is always optimistic, even whenshe is beset by personal tragedy. She is a shining example of everyday heroism – though she herself would probably have seenit as only doing her duty, and as providing simple human kindness. There were many aspects of home front life during the war that I had not been aware of before reading these diaries, mostnotably the extent of the Zeppelin bombings across Britain. We are all aware of the Blitz during WWII, but I had not realisedthat there was also an intense bombing campaign during WWI as well. Lillie recounts many occasions when there was an airraid, and the devastation caused by the bombs. It was also very interesting to read about the rationing during the war andthe hardship endured to make ends meet. Again, I had not realised that it was voluntary for the early years of conflict. Herindignation at the inflated prices of goods and travel is very emphatic! Her diary also provides a compelling mirror of theaccounts her soldier lodgers give her of trench warfare. She records their stories of the chaos caused by poor leadership andbad organisation. This is reflected by her relaying several incidences of governmental interference in business which causegreat financial losses due to an unwillingness to listen to expert advice.By an astonishing coincidence, Lillie's wonderful diary had a very personal impact on me. To my great surprise, I discoveredwhen reading it that she lived in the same road where I grew up! The places she describes, the devastation, the hope, thecamaraderie, is all against the backdrop of places at once familiar and strange. One of the most poignant sentences in herdiary, which stood out and has stayed with me is this:

“One knows that our successes are brought at a terrible price, and we long for peace, but it must be a peace that will ensurepeace to our children.”On the centenary of the commencement of WWI, this is still today a fervent wish we all share. Sophia Matthew

In the past, Riesling has suffered a bad rap due to the likesof ‘Blue Nun’ (which, I challenge you to identify in a tastingwhere glasses are unidentified of course!) and the bad presssurrounding the 1985 German antifreeze scandal. Slowly butsurely, (and correctly), attitudes are changing and arenewed interest in this noble grape is emerging.Riesling is a white grape variety, possibly originating in theRhine region of Germany, where evidence of its presencewas recorded in 1435. It is very aromatic; can have quite anintense perfume of roses, along with citrus, green apple,petrol/kerosene, mineral and spice and more….It shows a deep connection to where it is grown; expressingvarious fruit characteristics that are only obtained from aparticular region (e.g. the highly perfumed Rieslingobtained from the clay soils of Alsace, France vs theminerality of the slate soils of the Rheingau). It is veryversatile and can produce dry, off-dry, sweet and sparklingwines.Riesling is relatively low in alcohol and naturally high inacidity, where the latter and scope of flavour profile enablesRiesling to age, some of the better quality examples rivalingthe longevity of great Bordeaux clarets! The town hall ofBremen, where various German wines are stored, proudlyhas in barrel, Riesling dating back to 1653! However, as ageneral rule of thumb, ageing suggestions for good qualityRieslings would be 5-15 years for dry, 10-20 years for semi-sweet and 10-30+ for sweet wines (if you can resist thatlong??). Wines showing age often have a distinctivemarmalade or waxy aroma and flavour profile. The sweet wines are created from ‘lengthy hang time’or late harvest, where the grape berries are left tobecome raisined on the vine. Other methods includethe evaporative effect of the fungus botrytis cinereaaka ‘noble rot’, or where the grape berries are frozen(Eiswein). This concentrates the grape berry sugars, giving the wines more richness, flavour and overallcomplexity. So, if you are inclined to branch out and trysomething new this spring, give Riesling a go!Plantagenet Riesling 2008Mount Barker, Western AustraliaPale straw in colour with green hues. Wonderfullyevolved classic lime infused aroma with lemon rindand pear characters, enhanced by subtle spice andmineral tones. Citrus characters follow through tothe palate. Wonderful juicy, crisp acid structure, leading on to great length with lemon, lime andpear elements lingering, finishing with a zest ofgrapefruit.Available from Den Boer Wines £14.99

Welcome to a new month, I hope the weather has improved and the water all around still has beenable to drain away.As I write, Spring has definitely sprung, flowers are reflected in the garden puddles and road-sideditches.While water levels are starting to lower in affected areas and the water table in general, hiddendangers to pets and farm stock remain. There will be areas of the countryside affected by water contaminated by sewage, overflowed farmeffluent and other waste, such as rotting crops.Although everyone will welcome the re-appearance of drier land, challenges for animal owners remain.Pets should be discouraged from drinking such contaminated water or even stagnant water, where bacteria includingLeptospirosis could be present.

Many animal charities, particularly the Dog’s Trust, and veterinary organisations like the BVA, have set inmotion FREE micro-chipping throughout the country.IT IS NOW OPERATING for the WHOLE OF APRIL!Any veterinary practice signed up to the Dog’s Trust agreement will implant a micro-chip in ANY dog. This is to help drive compliance for the compulsory micro-chipping of all dogs in all parts of the UK by 2016.Planning a holiday across the Channel? Microchips are of course necessary for travelling pets; everyone’snow aware from their vet practice and from published articles including this column, that a Rabies vaccineis needed after micro-chipping, The UK Government insists, for public health reasons only, that all dogsre-entering the UK are treated for a very unpleasant-to-man tape-worm between 1 and 5 days before

entering sovereign territory. As a practice, we believe that our strongest recommendation to protect the pet DOG againstvery serious pet diseases by using licensed collars or skin-applied liquids is echoed by many practices. The consequences ofinfection are long-term, very unpleasant for the dog and many potentially life-threatening or lead to chronic debilitatingdisease. Please ask you Practice for more advice as well as downloading the BVA-AWF leaflet. As a practice and thinking of parasites - Lungworm, Angiostrongylus spp, raises its profile as moreinformation is collected about its incidence across the country. We will now be making it an optionalextra as part of our pre-op and routine blood sampling tests. A simple test, a quick result and all positiveresults are being coordinated and collated by a big referral practice on the outskirts of Winchester forthe benefit of veterinary practices and their canine patients.Positive cases are not referred, just continue treatment. On a MUCH lighter note, we are already welcoming the first of a 2014 string of potential veterinarystudents from local schools and from much further away. It is a real pleasure to foster this nascentinterest in our profession and to prepare in even a small way, a student for life in the workplace and in university life and whenqualified one day, what choice of animals to work with and what to expect. From day one, newly qualified vets in a newpractice will have a specially-designed online and in-house mentoring process to help them settle into their new career withconfidence and essential support from their peers. Learning never ever stops for any veterinary surgeon or nurse!!We are also one of many EMS practices, so that we can help with the gaining of experience for vet school students during thevital clinical years when they rotate through different types of veterinary practices. Like other local practices, we have alsoattained a type of veterinary nurse training practice status, thanks to a lot of hard work by individual members of staff, so thatwe can offer to train nurses, for us in collaboration with an external practice, and the overall mentorship of Hartpury Collegenear Gloucester.Personally, may we thank all our clients for their support through invaluable custom, all this activity behind the scenes, whichthey may now be aware of is a result of reading this now.Don’t forget the free micro-chipping! One month ONLY, this month!Have a great April, good health to you all. If in doubt, always ask your veterinary surgeon’s or veterinary nurse’s advice.Thank you!

Weight training – will women bulk up from heavy weighttraining? One of the most important methods of training for improving thebody is weight training and because of a lot of ‘false’ informationportrayed by the media, women have been led to believe that heavyweight training will cause them to develop a bulky-looking body.A common misconception is that you shouldn’t be lifting weights ifyou want to slim down. As soon as weight lifting is mentioned, manywomen immediately picture a she-male bodybuilder. The truth isthat the opposite occurs. In fact, there are many benefits tostrength conditioning with weights.Although some may have aspired to lifting weights at one point oranother, quite often they end up not following through, maybebecause they are overwhelmed by the whole gym experience, strolling aimlessly through a maze of exercise machines. In most cases, when someone is new to a gym they are more likely tostart by doing what they are confident doing. This usually meanswalking over to one of the treadmills, elliptical walkers or someother cardio machine, rather than daring to try anything else.Three common reasons why women in particular shy away fromlifting weights:1. They are afraid of getting too big and bulky2. They only want to tone muscles, but not build muscles3. They are afraid of being judged for lifting incorrectly and areintimidated by free weightsLet’s tackle each concern separately:The fear of getting big and bulkyBulkiness is caused by having a large amount of body fat, not byhaving too much muscle. If a person doesn’t lift weights, they won’thave a lot of lean muscle mass. And if they don’t have a lot of leanmuscle mass, then that bulk they are referring to is nothing morethan fat tissue. Once they begin a weight lifting routine, they will seea great improvement in body composition while they are actuallygetting smaller through losing fat tissue. You have to work hard foryears, training with heavy weights to build a considerable amount ofmuscle.Maintaining muscle mass requires a constant stressor and isn’tsomething the body permanently holds. Muscles will begin toatrophy as quickly as two weeks after discontinuing the workoutroutine. The conclusion is that lifting weights does not create a bulky, unfeminine body. In fact, it creates a leaner, more athletic, elegant-looking body. Muscle is far more compact than fat; so the moremuscle you build, and the fat you lose, the smaller you actuallybecome. And the more lean muscle tissue you acquire, the morecalories you will burn 24/7.There is one simple reason why women are incapable of acquiringmuscle mass anywhere close to the level that a male is capable ofacquiring: the absence of the hormone testosterone. On average, men produce roughly 16 times more testosterone thanwomen, and many research articles state levels greater than 25 timesmore!Recalling the fact that men produce more testosterone than females, you’d think men could easily develop as much muscle mass as theydesired.Actually, there are very few men that are able to gain a significantamount of muscle mass without the use of anabolic steroids. Ifgaining muscle was so easy, there wouldn’t be a multi-billion dollarmarket for muscle-building products and regimes. Women doproduce testosterone, but it’s in such small quantities that it isridiculous to debate the natural ability of growing massive musclesin 99.9% of females. Even women who dedicate their entire lives tolifting weights don’t get large and bulky because their bodies don’tnaturally produce enough testosterone.TO BE CONTINUED MAY EDITION!……..

Rhubarb! Rhubarb! Rhubarb!…

The Advertiser Magazine online www.theadvertisermagazine.net

Have we talked about rhubarb yet? If not, i can't imaginewhy! Rhubarb is just drifting in to season. It's popping it'sdelicious heads up on our allotments and vegetable patchesand it's just making an appearance in the shops.

At Hare in the Woods, we have wonderful tender Yorkshirerhubarb. It's grown in the Yorkshire triangle, an area famousfor delicious, early forced rhubarb. It thrives in the cold andwet Yorkshire environment due to the fact that it is originallyfrom Siberia. Delicately pink, it heralds the time for cookingtart savouries and sweet tarts!

Botanically a vegetable, rhubarb is actually marvellousin savoury dishes especiallywith oily meats like pork ormackerel. Saute the rhubarb ina little butter then serve withroast pork or pan friedmackerel. Or stuff somepoussin cavities with the rawrhubarb coated with sugar anda little grated fish ginger.

I often think that rhubarb is over cooked when it getsstewed in a pan and so in this light I always bake it in theoven. Cut into 3-4 cm lengths and sit it into an ovenproofdish. Sprinkle with copious amounts of soft brown sugar andadd some orange zest or chopped stem ginger. Cover andbake for 15 minutes.

But I love folding rhubarb in to rich, thick cream. The twomarry so well together. So I think a little rhubarb fool may bethe order of the day.

To serve 4-6, cook around 600g rhubarb until just soft. Eitheras above or stewed, whichever you prefer. Cool completely.Whip a really generous 600ml double cream untilit is voluminous and holds it's shape. Fold in 200gcustard then lastly the cold rhubarb. Leave it alittle marbled which gives a lovely texture andcoloration. Serve with chunks of shortbread anda nice big spoon!

An authentic taste of America is about land on our doorsteps soon. Taking inspiration from the fun and fearlessnessof the 1950's, when food ruled and cars were all the rage, Chariots and Cherry Pie will combine a gourmet diningexperience with a deluxe personalized car wash service. It’s the only place outside America where you can get yourwheels shined, while you dine and unwind over a gourmet diner meal.

The first Cherry Pie Diner will open its doors to customers at Buckland in June 2014. Customers can enjoy a deliciousall day breakfast including sweet waffles, pancakes, steak and eggs and breakfast skillets. The lunch and dinnermenu features a mouth-watering array of burgers and hot dogs alongside regional and State specialities such as theBoston Butt Hoagie and Beef Po Boy.

The 70-seat diner will also be serving up an appetizing range of American desserts including classic cherry, apple orpecan pies and traditional ice cream sundaes, shakes, malts and ice cream soda floats.

While you enjoy a coffee or meal the experts at Chariots Car Spa will bring your car back to a showroom shine. The car wash team will offer everything from a 12 minute exterior clean to a full interior and exterior valet service.

Chariots and Cherry Pie will be running a loyalty card scheme and a host of weekly special offers including half pricedrinks and baked goods in Happy Homework Hours on week day afternoons, and a free newspaper and 10% discounton breakfast and car wash for Saturday Super Dads.

Chariots and Cherry Pie is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Claire andJonathan Hilsdon who both gave up stakes in successful businesses to setup the new joint venture.

Claire comments; “We recently visited the States and were totally blownaway by the quality of service and simple good home cooked food weenjoyed on our travels. We wanted to bring a taste of the American diningdream back home to the UK.”

Jonathan comments; “The restaurant team have worked hard to sourcethe best quality local produce and blended this with some of our favouritetastes of America to give a real Diner experience. We’re really proud ofour diverse, high quality menu.”

A second Chariots and Cherry Pie is due to open in Grove in Autumn 2014.It will feature a diner and car spa followed by a boutique Cherry Pie Motel in 2015.

The good news for local residents is we won’t have to wait until June to get a tasteof the Chariots and Cherry Pie experience. From March through May the CherryPie Mobile Diner will be on site offering a taster Diner menu before hitting theroads in June and appearing all over the country at some of the biggest and bestsummer events. The trailer will also be available for private hire for weddings, parties and corporate events. The team is happy to customize the menu to suitindividual tastes, dietary requirements and themes.

With its gourmet menu, impeccable service and attention to detail,Chariots and Cherry Pie looks set to become everyone’s favouritedestination diner experience for miles around.

Energetic Earthworms

We have been out late watching a one of our lovelyearthworm species, the Common Earthworm Lumbricusterrestris the last couple of nights, take part here atwww.opalexplorenature.org/soilsurvey .It has been just right for them. Over cast with dampconditions, these are the biggest of our earthworm speciesin the UK, and they have been coming up to the surface tomate. You will see them lying alongside each other withwhat looks like a large band around part of their body. Thisis called a clitellum. They lie alongside one another and passsperm to each other from their reproductive organs neartheir head. After fertilization, the clitellum secretes a kind oftube that rolls off the worm carrying the eggs and isdeposited in the soil as a cocoon. The cocoon will protectthe eggs until they hatch and can contain two to fifteenbaby worms. Each adult worm can do this up to three timesa week. Be quiet and walk gently, these creatures aresensitive and will zoom back in their burrows at top speed ifthey feel threatened. Remember too that its earthwormsthat keep our soils healthy with nutrients from their faecesand by the allowing air as well as water to travel throughtheir burrows. One of my favourite Charles Darwin quotes iseven devoted to earthworms written in 1881 “It may bedoubted whether there are many other animals which haveplayed so important part in the history of the world as havethese lowly organized creatures” Just about sums it up really.

Well, why not? You have to start somewhere. Over the lastyear a number of our clients have been caught out. Somewould blame it on the small print of the policy whilst otherswould say those clients should take more care and pay moreattention to detail!

One of the great things about “On Line” quote engines isthat you can get a really cheap quote quite quickly. But doesit give you what you want? Is it value for money or is it justcheap?

Here are a few things to look out for.

Do you (or anyone in your family) work from home?If so, your insurance could well be invalidated unless youhave your insurers written expressed permission.

Do you insure any gold and silver items of jewellery? If so, is the valuation up to date? The value of preciousmetals has rocketed over the last year or two. This sometimespushes the value of certain items above the limit for unspecifieditems.

You suddenly discover water seeping through a wall. Doesyour insurance include search and investigation? Many donot.

Define the word Valuables? Most insurers will restrict the amount of “valuables” thatyou have in the home to a simple percentage of the totalcontents value. One or two old paintings given by AuntEthel or the stamp collection from Old Uncle Bill can causehavoc when trying to settle a claim!

Unfair dismissal from work.

Does your insurance provide legal advice or expenses coverthat would help you if you have been unfairly dismissed fromwork; or your neighbour from hell has a 200ft tall tree leaningprecariously toward your home?

Losses away from the home.A suitcase left in your car is not insured unless you ask for it tobe insured!

Accidental Damage.Do please make sure your Home Insurance includesAccidental Damage before you inadvertently paint the carpetor alter the state of the family heirloom from solid state tojigsaw state!

Subsidence!Do you have large trees near your home? Many insurers askthis question—and you may have answered it truthfully 10years ago. Trees grow! Extensions, porches and tall chimneysare all particularly susceptible tosubsidence.

Listed Buildings and allBuildings in ConservationAreas.Repairs to listed properties canbe two or three times moreexpensive than repairs to nonlisted properties. Take care tovalue your property adequately.
