Recreation ParticipationThe most common motion of

recreation is that it is primarily a participation in sports and games.

Recreation actually includes an extremely broad range of leisure activities including travel and tourism, cultural entertainment, participation in the arts, hobbies, membership in social clubs or interest groups, nature-related activities such as hunting and fishing, attendance at parties, special events and fitness activities.

Commodification of Leisure – Various forms of recreation are being developed by profit-seeking businesses. Giant corporations have taken control of music, televisions, movie businesses, sports stadiums, cruise ships, theme parks and other leisure operations.Therapeutic Recreation Service – An important aspect of the growth of recreation has been the increased awareness of the recreation needs of persons with physical, mental or social disabilities. One of the sports programs for people with disabilities that has received much attention in recent years is the Special Olympics, an international program of physical fitness, sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental retardation.New Leisure Roles for Women – There is a strong drive by woman to play a more equal role in recreational opportunities. Women were treated as second-class citizens in leisure opportunities.

III. Types of Organized Recreation

Government Recreation Agencies – These are the federal, state, provincial agencies and local departments that provide recreation and leisure services as a primary function. Voluntary Nonprofit Organizations – These are non-government, non-profit agencies, both sectarian and non-sectarian which serve the public at large with multiservice programs that often include a substantial element of recreational opportunity (BSP, GSP, YMCA, YWCA)Private Membership Organizations – They provide recreational and social activities for their own members and in some cases assist community recreation needs. (golf, tennis, yacht, athletic and country clubs)Commercial Recreation Enterprise – These are privately owned businesses which operate to make a profit such as ski centers, bowling alleys, nightclubs, movie houses, theaters, health spas or fitness centers, dancing schools and theme parks.

The modern Olympic Games are the leading international sporting event featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating, meaning they each occur every four years but two years apart.

As the biggest multi-sport games after the Olympic Games, the Asian Games is the most prestigious event organized by the Olympic Council of Asia. Similar to the Olympic Games, the Asian Games are held every four years, with the 17th edition.

The Asian Games follow the sports programme of the Olympic Games, with swimming and athletics as the core sports, as well as featuring disciplines which reflect the diverse sporting culture of the continent such as sepak takraw (South East Asia), kabaddi (South Asia) and wushu (East Asia).

The inaugural Asian Games took place in New Delhi, India, in 1951 with 11 countries competing in six sports. The 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in 2010 featured 45 countries and regions competing in 42 sports, highlighting the growth of the Olympic Movement in Asia.

The Palarong Pambansa Program is an annual multi-level national scholastic athletic competition conducted by the Department of Education and participated in by the elementary and secondary pupils / students both from public and private schools.

The International Olympic Committee is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement.Acting as a catalyst for collaboration between all parties of the Olympic family, from the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the International Sports Federations (IFs), the athletes, the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs), to the TOP partners, broadcast partners and United Nations agencies, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shepherds success through a wide range of programmes and projects. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is the apex sporting body which controls all the sports in Asia. It is one of the five continental associations recognized by the IOC.

The OCA was formed in 1982 and has its permanent headquarters in Kuwait. The main objective of the OCA is to develop sport, culture and education of Asian youth as well as to promote international respect, friendship, goodwill & peace through sports.

The PHILIPPINE OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (POC) is a private, non-governmental organization composed of and serves as the mother organization of all National Sports Associations in the Philippines.
