PASTORAL LETTERAs I sat down at my computer to write these very words

for an article about Thanksgiving, I popped onto Facebook for just a moment to see what was happening in the social media world. Big mistake. I immediately saw the ugliness of some of the post-election posts; a post about the last walk that a man and his dog will ever make to a beach together; an update from one of our members in the hospital needing prayers for his health; a “goodbye” post from a friend who’s just now telling us that she’s moving away from Pensacola.

I didn’t feel very thankful as I opened a new Word document to write this article. So I stopped and made myself think beyond the stimuli that was right in front of me shouting for my attention. It didn’t take long to realize that I, of course, have so much for which to be thankful. Just last weekend I was able to spend time with our Youth Choir at Camp Baldwin as we prepared for our White Christmas Program. And this morning we had 21 youth

come to Panera Bread at 7:15am so they could fellowship and study the Bible with us before going to school. To use a stereotypical Thanksgiving metaphor: our youth are a never-ending cornucopia of blessings and I am so fortunate to get to be in ministry with them. (Yes, I know they’re served with a side of frustration, but they’re still worth it!) Every Sunday I get to worship with the Sanctuary Choir. Last night I enjoyed dinner and a concert with our Handbell Choir.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that every one of the blessings I just thought of involved being with other people. When we come together as children of God, God is there with us. When we worship together, we become more than a gathering of friends. We become a family.

We have a special opportunity to worship with part of God’s greater family on Tuesday, November 22, at 6:30pm when we host the Community Thanksgiving Service. Along with our congregation, the congregations and leadership of Christ Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, First Baptist Church, and Temple Beth El will be worshiping with us. Our Sanctuary Choir and Handbell Choir, along with the Perdido Brass will be providing the music.

Come join us, and be thankful!

“Many years ago I was sitting up in the balcony during one of the worship services with my family. Holly Shumpert was giving a children’s sermon and her daughter Lauren was there with her”, said Karen Feliciano. She said she remembered the words of that children’s sermon like it was yesterday. Karen described the scene... “Holly was speaking about prayer and her daughter Lauren was standing there singing her ABC’s over and over while her mom tried to speak. Finally her mom turned to her and asked her why she kept singing that over and over. Lauren said, “Mom, that’s how I pray sometimes. I don’t always know the words to pray, so I sing my ABC’s and Jesus can turn them into prayers.” Karen explained that those words freed her that day. They freed her from thinking she always had to say the perfect prayer or have the perfect words to say. “It was like fireworks inside my head and my heart. I can ‘sing my ABC’s’ and the Spirit intercedes on our behalf,” said Karen. Little did Karen know what the words of that sermon were preparing her for.

Karen later joined a Bible study group where she met

Deb Brothers. “I’ve never met a mightier prayer warrior. I mean...talk about fervent prayer. Deb sometimes prayed for individuals for three and four hours at a time. One of those individuals was my son, David,” said Karen. “The doctors were almost certain that David had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma because he was displaying symptoms. They decided to do surgery to biopsy the area. Deb got up in the morning and she prayed for David for four hours before his surgery. During the surgery the doctors found that David did not have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,

but a bad infection. They were stumped and couldn’t figure out how it could be. I knew why. It was Deb’s Prayers,” said Karen through choked back tears.

“When Deb asked me to be on her prayer team six years ago and said ‘I can’t do it without you’, I flashed back to that sermon and to my ABC’s…. and I said yes,” said Karen. At that point The Prayer team was just getting started and consisted of Deb Brothers, Karen Feliciano, and Deborah Cathy. The Prayer Team agreed to meet once a week to pray over any submitted prayer request forms, the church prayer list, as well as any other needs of the church. The team also sends a card to each person that was prayed for. After Deb passed away in 2012, the Prayer Team’s name was changed to The Deb Brothers Prayer Team, “because she was the one who had the heart for intercessory prayer,” said Deborah Cathy. Over the years, the team has grown and now includes Ruth Klarner and Linda McDade who oversee writing the many notes that are sent out to those who are prayed for. Gay Carter also assists in writing the cards to those who submitted prayer requests through Ruth’s Kitchen.

Prayer is an important part of First Church. Prayer is

something everyone can do, no matter who you are. As a congregation it is our responsibility to faithfully pray. If you would like to learn more about the prayer ministry at First Church or if you would like to join the Deb Brothers Prayer Team, please contact the church office at 850-432-1434.
