Reduce Complex I/O Wiring
The disadvantage for long distance direct I/O wiring– Signal decay and interference– Difficult on deployment
Difficult on fault diagnosis– Difficult on fault diagnosis– Difficult on maintain and upgrade
One Cable from controller to collect data Simple and Tidy
Rack vs. Modular
Racks are used where there is a higher density of sensors and actuators in close physical proximity; such as valve p y p y;manifolds or an array of proximity sensors.Modules are used to for connecting a few points of I/O such
h ddi t k li ht t hias when adding a stack light to a machine.
High Density, fewer Node ID / IP required
Easy Connection & flexible

Snooping?
IGMP Snooping
IGMP means Internet Group Management ProtocolsIGMP means Internet Group Management Protocols.
IGMP snooping means listening to the IGMP communications being passed through a switch The switch must be “managed” to have thispassed through a switch. The switch must be managed to have this feature and when enabled, will automatically optimize IGMP communication.
The primary objective of IGMP snooping is to filter Multicast transmissions. Implicit connections use multicasting, which means the speed and efficiency of the I/O related communication is significantly i dincreased.
The significance of this is more reliable determinism allowing the term “real-time” to be used in conjunction with the I/O messagingreal-time to be used in conjunction with the I/O messaging.

CIP, or Common Industrial Protocol, is the name of the family of protocols under the auspices of ODVA. The ControlLogix Tag Name protocol is not under ODVA but is communicated in a satndard CIP packet and is usedunder ODVA but is communicated in a satndard CIP packet and is used by ControlLogix 5000.

Remote I/OPROFINET
The ADAM-6100 and APAX-5071 Series Ethernet based remote I/O modules are designed to work as slave remote I/O to a controller. odu es a e des g ed o o as s a e e o e /O o a co o e
APAX I/O Concept
SpeedThe speed of transmission of Ethernet is the single most significant factor for the acceptance of Ethernet as a viable network supporting remote I/O.

Eth t t d t i i tiC t Eth t t h l i d t i i tiThe Determinism Obstacle
Ethernet was not deterministic.Current Ethernet technology is deterministic.
Collision
Hubs are not deterministic, they only support half-duplex Ethernet.Switches are full duplex, faster, and more efficient, so that collisions do not occur. At only 10 Mbps networks are prone to collisions.Ethernet today is deterministic within its bandwidth.
Speed and DeterminismThe delivery van must be fast and reliable enough to deliver a packet under the worst predictable conditions. The deterministic condition is that it must reach its
destination by noon every day.y y y

Switches Add LatencySwitches do make the Ethernet able to support “real-time” I/O. But, a switch does
not simply pass a communication packet through, it processes the packet to varying degrees, and this takes time.
An old rule of thumb was 3 – 4 – 5.
