Oneofthesignificantchallengesthatsubstationengineersfaceisjustifyingsubstationautomationinvestments.Thepositiveimpactsthatautomationhasonoperatingcosts,increasedpowerquality,andreducedoutageresponsearewellknown.Butlittleattentionispaidtohowtheuseofacommunicationstandardimpactsthecosttobuildandoperatethesubstation.
Legacycommunicationprotocolsweretypicallydevelopedwiththedualobjectiveofprovidingthenecessaryfunctionsrequiredbyelectricpowersystemswhileminimizingthenumberofbytesthatwereusedbytheprotocolbecauseofseverebandwidthlimitationsthatweretypicaloftheseriallinktechnologyavailable10

Later,asEthernetandmodernnetworkingprotocolslikeTCP/IPbecamewidespread,theselegacyprotocolswereadaptedtorunoverTCP/IPEthernet.
Thisapproachprovidedthesamebasicelectricpowersystemcapabilitiesastheseriallinkversionwhilebringingtheadvantagesofmodernnetworkingtechnologiestothesubstation.Butthisapproachhasafundamentalflaw:theprotocolsbeingusedwerestilldesignedtominimizethebytesonthewireanddonottakeadvantageofthevastincreaseinbandwidththatmodernnetworkingtechnologiesdeliverbyprovidingahigherleveloffunctionalitythatcansignificantlyreducetheimplementationandoperationalcostsofsubstationautomation.

ModernNetworkingTechnologiesIEC61850isunique.IEC61850isnotaformerseriallinkprotocolrecastontoTCP/IPEthernet.IEC61850wasdesignedfromthegrounduptooperateovermodernnetworkingtechnologiesanddeliversanunprecedentedamountoffunctionalitythatissimplynotavailablefromlegacycommunicationsprotocols.

LowerEquipmentMigrationCosts
