Introduction

Beginning in 2003 ADVAN Power Systems affiliated companiesbegan the development and manufacturing a full line ofpolymer arresters for distribution voltages. Today, ADVAN’sADVANTAGE series arresters incorporate ADVAN’s AdvanSIL aproprietary, industry proven, 100% silicone rubber and ADVAN’sAdvanSEAL, a proprietary sealing system where the AdvanSIL ismolded directly over the MOV stack and end fittings, embedding allcritical components, creating a protective housing, free of inclusions, gaps and seams, providing an superior seal against moisture ingress.

Advan’s ADVANTAGE series distribution-class surge arrester arepart of the AdvanSIL polymer-housed surge arrester product offeringand are available in Heavy-Duty and Riser Pole classificationproviding superior overvoltage protection for all electricaldistribution systems. AdvanSILis the same silicone rubber usedacross the ADVAN Power Systems product offering.

ConstructionADVANTAGE series polymer-housed surge arrester are constructed with Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) manufactured in ISO certified, state of the art facilities. Dictating the quality control used by our world class block supplier delivers a MOV disk of proven reliability and concise protective characteristics. The MOV disks and aluminum end electrodes are encapsulated in high quality fiberglass and epoxy resign using our own proprietary AdvataSEAL process under strict quality control, in our highly automated assembly area, eliminating manufacturing variances.

ADVAN’s proprietary manufacturing process, AdvanSEAL forms asecondary moisture seal under the primary silicone rubber housing, making the arrester impervious to moisture and capable ofwithstanding extreme cantilever load, electrical, and environmentalconditions.

Features

AdvanSIL silicone rubber is used across ADVAN’s entire polymerproduct line including Distribution, Transmission, Substation andStrain insulators as well as ADVAN’s switching equipment and hasdecades of global exposure and thousands of products in servicetoday. As a result of this exposure, ADVAN is able to determineoptimum shed configuration and spacing. Additionally, independentlong-term environmental testing as well as our in-serviceperformance record proves superiority of ADVAN’s AdvanSIL siliconerubber when compared to other polymers in the market today.

An optional insulated mounting bracket is available making connectingto a wide variety of equipment and crossarm brackets simple, compactand sturdy.

With or without the insulated mounting bracket, an optional groundlead disconnector is available. The disconnector removes the groundterminal from the arrester in the unlikely event of arrester failure, preventing a permanent system fault. A disconnector that has operatedgives a visual indication of internal damage and the need for arresterreplacement.

AdvanSIL polymer-housed MOV IEEE® surge arresters; heavy-duty and riser pole (10kA) for MV systems to 36kV

To aid in reducing wildlife mortalities from interaction with thearrester, a universal wildlife protector is available. This protectorahs two self-adjusting “valve” style openings allowing for a largevariety of conductors and insulations sizes. Additionally, theseprotector reduce customer outages, the resulting revenue losses, and potential regulatory fines on utility companies.

Operation

The ADVANTAGE series arrester operates as gapless metal oxidearresters are intended. During normal operating conditions theline-to-ground voltage is applied constantly across the arresterterminals. When a surge event occurs, the ADVANTAGE seriesarrester immediately limits the overvoltage to the requiredprotective levels by conducting the surge current to ground.Following the passage of the surge, the arrester returns tonormal operating mode, conducting minimal leakage current.

ADVANTAGE series arrester protective and physicalcharacteristics can be found in the tables found on pages 4 and 5of this catalog.

Design & Production TestingADVAN’s ADVANTAGE series distribution class surge arrestersare designed as a system where the housing, internal parts andmounting hardware work together to provide many years oftrouble-free service regardless of environmental extremes.Testing to IEEE Std C62.11™ by an independent laboratoryensures compliance to industry standards and practices.

As part of ADVAN’s policy of continuous product improvement, additional testing on both the components and assembledarrester units continues today, providing our customers with theconfidence they deserve in todays demanding, ultra competitivebusiness environment.

A complete production test programs ensures our products willperform beyond expectation. We demonstrate our commitmentto quality by preforming a series of tests on every batch ofvaristors:

• 100% Physical Inspection

• 100% Discharge Volage Test

• 100% V1mA/cm2

• 100% Leakage Current (Watts Loss)

• Batch High-Current, Short-Duration

• Batch Thermal Stability

• Batch Aging Test

All fully assembled ADVANTAGE series arresters are subjected tothe following production tests:

• 100% Physical Inspection

• 100% Leakage Current Tests

• 100% Partial Discharge Tests

Standard Insulating Bird Guard: ADVAN’s standard insulating bird guard cap is designed to allow a single point or allow two holes through holes for connection lead wires. Each side of the insulating bird guard cap has holes with latticework to prevent accidental wildlife contact with the energized top end of the arrester. ADVAN’s standard insulating bird guard cap can be used with both ADVAN’s AHD and ARP lighting surge arresters.
