On an average day, 150 patients come to the Emergency Department at UAMS, seven babies

are born, 35 surgeries are performed, and 2,150 patients see doctors at UAMS clinics in central Arkansas and throughout the state.

UAMS College of Pharmacy is home to the state’s Poison Control Hotline, which receives more than

40,000 calls a year (averaging more than 100 calls a day).

We are Arkansas’ health sciences university. As the state’s largest public employer, our more than 10,000 employees reside in 72 of Arkansas’ 75 counties. We have welcomed patients from every county in Arkansas, all 50 states and at least 50 other countries. The economic impact of UAMS to our state exceeds $3.9 billion a year when including our affiliates Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (Battelle Memorial Institute, Dec. 2010). Our total research funding is close

to $130 million across the UAMS system. The UAMS BioVentures business incubator program has created 46 companies thus far, nineteen of which produce an annual payroll of $26.5 million. With all of these achievements, your philanthropy makes a difference. Each and

every gift is important. UAMS receives only 9 percent of its funding needs from the state of Arkansas. State budgets have tightened and federal grants are increasingly more competitive to obtain. the Society of the double helix The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences gratefully acknowledges the outstanding philanthropy and exemplary leadership of individuals, foundations, corporations and organizations that have contributed $100,000 or more to the institution since its founding in 1879. To honor these generous contributors – past, present and future – the UAMS Foundation Fund Board established the Society of the Double Helix on March 10, 1998. The double helix structure of the DNA molecule is an appropriate symbol for this distinguished group whose individual contributions have combined to advance the central mission of UAMS: to teach, to heal, to search and to serve. The history of this internationally recognized symbol began in 1953 with the discovery of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule by researchers James Watson and Francis Crick at Cambridge University. The discovery of this fundamental structure of life earned a Nobel Prize in 1963 and forever changed the universe of science and medicine. The worldwide scientific community has adopted the double helix as a symbol of the quest for knowledge through scientific research. The vertically spiraling ribbons enveloping ladder-like horizontal crossbars are often compared to pathways to future discovery and staircases to success. The structure represents the continually unfolding relationship of science to all fields of human endeavor – including the conquest of disease. The discovery by Watson and Crick revolutionized medical research, transformed biology, spawned the fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering, and enabled the creation of new pharmaceuticals. The discovery also united an entire medical community engaged in trying to understand the underlying mechanisms of genetically linked diseases. Similarly, the members of the Society of the Double Helix have revolutionized the environment at UAMS through achievements realized with their support. They have helped to fund student scholarships, faculty and research endowments, state-of-the-art equipment purchases, construction of modern facilities and program centers of excellence. Just as the winding ribbon staircase of the DNA molecule symbolizes the essence of life and constant search for knowledge, the membership of the Society of the Double Helix represents the pinnacle of excellence and commitment that moves the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences forward as a premier education, research and health care institution.

donor Recognition Wall The names of members of the Society of the Double Helix are honored in perpetuity on a wall display in the foyer of the Harry P. Ward Tower at UAMS. Some donors have requested anonymity. Names are listed as they appear on the donor wall. The design is based on the intertwined ribbons of the DNA molecule, and it echoes the pattern of “The Miracle of the Double Helix,” a nine-foot bronze sculpture by Arkansas artist Hank Kaminsky that stands outside the Harry P. Ward Tower.Induction Ceremonies Through the years the philanthropic contributions of members of the Society of the Double Helix have helped advance the comprehensive mission of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to achieve international recognition. UAMS in turn, has proudly held formal recognition ceremonies to officially induct philanthropic contributors into the Society with the first such ceremony being held in 1998. Members inducted in 1998 represent the founding members of the Society of the Double Helix which includes contributions made starting with the establishment of the institution in 1879.

the Legacy Society The Legacy Society at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences recognizes all donors who have made, or are making, gifts to any area at UAMS through a planned gift. This means, for instance, a bequest through a will or trust, the gift of an insurance policy, the remainder interest of a trust or annuity or any other contribution that is to be deferred until a future date in time. In the past, we too often discovered these gifts—many of which were very generous—only after the donors had passed away. One of the key goals of the Legacy Society is to recognize these caring, generous individuals during their lifetimes.

Rockefeller Cancer Institute Envoys event where I learned of the groundbreaking cancer treatment of Dr. Matthew Steliga. When my father, Bill Woodyard III, was diagnosed with lung cancer, I knew UAMS could help. Because of the excellent care that my father received, I joined the Envoys’ Board. My twin daughters were also born at UAMS and have benefited from its expert care. And my wife, Peyton, is chairing the 2012 Partners Card, a fundraising project of the volunteer auxiliary of the Cancer Institute. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as chairman of

the UAMS Foundation Fund Board. It is a great honor and

privilege to serve in this capacity and work with my fellow

advisory board members.

UAMS currently has more than 1,400 committed

stakeholders who volunteer their time, energy and

resources to serve in various capacities and on volunteer

advisory boards across UAMS.

These volunteers are some of the most important resources UAMS has to our

credit. The synergy they produce, working together for the betterment of UAMS and

their community is unparalleled.

Perhaps most important, these

volunteers are credible, objective and

energetic individuals with fresh perspectives

who proudly serve as advocates for UAMS

nation, and all with specialty expertise that

brings a unique perspective as to UAMS’ role in health care.

U of A System Board of trustees The Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas System is the governing body of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and all campuses and units within the University of Arkansas System. The board is comprised of 10 trustees who are appointed by the governor, one each year, for 10-year terms with the consent of the state senate. The president is the chief executive officer of the University of Arkansas System and reports to the Board of Trustees. Each campus in the University of Arkansas System has a chancellor as its chief executive officer, reporting directly to the president.

UAMS Foundation Fund Board The UAMS Foundation Fund was created by the University of Arkansas, Inc. to secure private, philanthropic support for the benefit of UAMS. The first board of directors of the UAMS Foundation Fund was established in 1976. The board is comprised of community leaders, volunteers, and other supporters and community representatives from around the state who assist UAMS with fundraising campaigns and initiatives, who provide guidance and leadership, and who serve a vital role as ambassadors to raise public awareness of the needs, programs, growth and development of UAMS.

Winthrop P. Rockefeller cancer institute Foundation Fund Board The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Foundation Fund was created by the University of Arkansas, Inc. to secure private, philanthropic support for the benefit of the Cancer Institute (previously known as the Arkansas Cancer Research Center). The board is comprised of community leaders, volunteers, and other supporters and community representatives from around the state who assist the Cancer Institute with fundraising campaigns and initiatives, who provide guidance and leadership, and who serve a vital role as ambassadors to raise public awareness of the needs, programs, growth and development of the Cancer Institute.
