The Needle Network is a bi-monthly publication provided to members of the American Sewing Guild San Diego
Chapter free of charge. Inquiries: American Sewing Guild, 5707 Antigua Blvd, San Diego, CA 92124
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hope everyone enjoyed Colette Michelle’s Frumpy to Fabulous lecture and workshop. It was very interesting
and I found it’s never too late to learn something new.
Did you submit anything for the San Diego County Fair? Congratulations to those who won much deserved rib-
bons. Please share your item(s) with the rest of our members when you attend neighborhood group meetings.
You really inspire the rest of us to submit items to the Fair.
Due to some health issues I need to take care of, I will not be running for President in 2013. If you are interested
in serving on the Chapter Advisory Board, please let Patricia Limber know and she will have your name put on
the ballot. Besides the elected positions (president, 1st vice president-Special Events, 2nd vice president-
Membership, secretary, and treasurer) there are other openings, i.e., Community Service Coordinator, Newsletter
Editor, etc. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions or to serve on a committee that can use addi-
tional resources. Remember you get a lot more out of an organization when you actively participate.
The 2012 National conference will be in Houston, Texas August 17-20, 2012 at the Hilton Americas Hotel, 1600
Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010 (713-739-8000). You can still reserve your hotel room. Check the schedule
on line at ASG.org for class availability and registration. You will need your membership number when you
register.
Take a look at our wonderful website www.sandiegoasg.org. It has been completely revamped and is now up to
date. You can access our various neighborhood groups for dates and what they will be covering at their meet-
ings. There is also other information on the website.
Keep healthy and happy and keep on learning and sewing. We need to keep our craft alive whether garment
sewing, making home decor or quilting.
Happy sewing.

EDITORIAL FROM A MEMBER
SAN DIEGO NEEDS TV SEWING SHOWS By Sheree McKee
When I moved here two years ago, I noticed the local PBS station was lacking in sewing related television series.
As a large guild, it is time for us to request some of these interesting shows that are professionally produced and
offered for free to PBS to put in their lineup.
The more requests they receive, the more likely we will start seeing them appear. Make your voice heard! This
could be a chapter goal or initiative. Please write your local PBS station and request sewing shows (not quilting)
for San Diego! Here’s a few guidelines to get you started. Select a Show you are interested in.
Sew it All (since 2008) It’s Sew Easy (since 2010) http://www.sewitalltv.com/show_info.html http://www.itsseweasytv.com/aboutus.htm
Sewing with Nancy (since 1982) Martha’s Sewing Room ( since 1993) http://www.wpt.org/sewingwithnancy/stations.cfm http://www.marthapullen.com/msr.html
Do your homework by visiting the website that produces the show so you will be informed when you write a
polite request or send an email to:
KPBS San Diego EMAIL TO: [email protected]
5200 Campanile Drive
San Diego, CA 92182
PBS needs donors or members; explain that you are more likely to become one if your interests are aired with program-
ming you enjoy. Include your full name, address and phone in your request for accountability.
Why Do Seminars Cost So Much?
Last month we listed the elements that go into planning and putting on a chapter event. To continue in that
vein, here is a look at our recent event featuring Marcia McClintock at the Handlery Hotel.
The hotel costs, including room rental, meals, coffee service, parking, etc. : $2,443.84
Speaker, including meals & Accommodations: $1,859.10
Miscellaneous $ 70.26
Total Cost $4,373.20
Income from Registrations $2,360.00
Chapter Funding for event $2,013.20
These funds were approved by your CAB prior to scheduling this event. We hope that your participation will
reduce out of pocket costs for future seminars.
Please contact a member of the CAB to provide insight on the types of events you would attend. Without
your input we do the best we can to bring guests of interest to our members.
July/August 2012 3
It’s that time again as we prepare for the 2013 annual election and general meeting scheduled for Saturday,
October 27th. Although details are still in the planning stages, we want to remind you that this is YOUR MEETING, a
time to mingle and visit with other members who may or may not attend your neighborhood meetings. This year
theme will be "Chapter Fashion and Trunk Show." So get those creative juices flowing and plan to show us what kind
of projects you have been sewing. Also at the meeting we are planning to have a creative contest. More details will be
forth coming in the next newsletter.
Along with the fun, there’s the serious side for this meeting. We’ll be voting for the 2013 Chapter Advisory Board
(CAB) and you still have time to put your name on the ballot. If you are interested in serving on the CAB in one of the
five elected positions, or one of several appointed positions, contact a member of the Board. CAB members’ names
and contact information are listed on the inside of the back page of this newsletter.
Your ballot and meeting registration form will arrive early in September. If you can’t attend the meeting, don’t forget
to mail your proxy ballot by the deadline on the voting form. Mailing information will be on the ballot. For your vote
to be valid, you must be a member in good standing...that means you must be current in your dues. You will need your
membership number on the ballot for it to be counted. Your membership number is on your ASG membership card. If
you have any questions, contact Pat Burns at [email protected] or Patricia Limber at [email protected].

The San Diego ASG yahoo group is just for members of the San Diego ASG. This yahoo group is an excellent way to
share information with a large number of members in a very easy manner. We can share meeting information, files,
photos, hints & tips, and projects with members throughout the Chapter.
Several of our neighborhood group leaders are using “Yahoo Groups” as a means of reminding all San Diego
members of up-coming neighborhood group meetings. This is a wonderful way of prompting members to ven-
ture out into the wonderful world of all that we have to offer. Updated information of program changes as well
as supply lists are often included. It’s easy to sign up. Just follow these steps:
Sign on to www.yahoogroups.com
If you do not belong to any other Yahoo group, follow the instructions for “signing up”.
You will create a Yahoo ID & a password.
You will have to agree to their terms, however, there is NO CHARGE for belonging to a Yahoo Group.
Once you are a member, search for our group by typing in sandiegoasg in the search field.
Click on Join the Group and follow the on-screen instructions.
Carol Filbeck will get your request and approve your membership.
If you have any questions, contact Carol Filbeck at [email protected] or by phone at (858) 566-9699.
She will walk you through the process.
