Preface

The 23rd Annual Dialysis Conference took place in

Seattle, Washington, March 2 – 4, 2003, under the

chairmanship of Karl D. Nolph. We express our

warmest thanks to the chair and his team of

professionals, who helped organize another

excellent meeting attended by approximately 2,500

participants. The Continuing Medical Education

(CME) team deserves all the kudos for their smooth

organizational skills—they made everything

happen.

The present volume includes a collection of

interesting peritoneal dialysis–related manuscripts

from the 23rd Annual Dialysis Conference. The

manuscripts were solicited from the invited speakers

and from contributors selected to give slide and poster

presentations during the conference. The manuscripts

were peer-reviewed, and those reflecting innovative

concepts and current interests in peritoneal dialysis

were chosen for publication. Advances in Peritoneal

Dialysis is abstracted in the Index Medicus, the Index

to Scientific and Technical Proceedings, and the

ISI/ISTP +B online database.

Preparations for the 24th Annual Dialysis

Conference, which is to be held in San Antonio,

Texas, February 9 – 11, 2004, are now underway. As

always, early registrants receive special discounts.

For information, visit our Web site at

www.muhealth.org/~dialysis, or contact the CME

office at the University of Missouri–Columbia at

(573) 882-4105.

The Editors

Each year the Annual Conference on Peritoneal

Dialysis recognizes those individuals who have

made significant contributions to the field of peri-

toneal dialysis. Each honoree receives a plaque

commemorating his or her pioneering work over

the years.

Every year the first author of the outstanding abstract

submitted to the Annual Conference on Peritoneal

Dialysis and the first author of the outstanding abstract

in the Nursing category are awarded a plaque and

cash award on behalf of the International Society for

Peritoneal Dialysis. The awards are presented to the

recipient during the conference.

Since 1990, the first authors of the two best

submitted abstracts in the field of pediatrics also

receive a plaque and cash award; these winners are

also listed below. Baxter Healthcare Corporation

sponsors these two pediatric awards.
