Preface

WSC 2008 Chair’s Welcome Message

Dear Colleague,

The World Soft Computing (WSC) conference is an annual internationalonline conference on applied and theoretical soft computing technology. ThisWSC 2008 is the thirteenth conference in this series and it has been a greatsuccess.

We received a lot of excellent paper submissions which were peer-reviewedby an international team of experts. Only 60 papers out of 111 submissionswere selected for online publication. This assured a high quality standardfor this online conference. The corresponding online statistics are a proof ofthe great world-wide interest in the WSC 2008 conference. The conferencewebsite had a total of 33, 367 different human user accesses from 43 countrieswith around 100 visitors every day, 151 people signed up to WSC to discusstheir scientific disciplines in our chat rooms and the forum. Also audio andslide presentations allowed a detailed discussion of the papers.

The submissions and discussions showed that there is a wide range of softcomputing applications to date. The topics covered by the conference rangefrom applied to theoretical aspects of fuzzy, neuro-fuzzy and rough sets overto neural networks to single and multi-objective optimisation. Contributionsabout particle swarm optimisation, gene expression programming, clustering, classification, support vector machines, quantum evolution and agent systemshave also been received. One whole session was devoted to soft computingtechniques in computer graphics, imaging, vision and signal processing.

This year WSC 2008 recognised the steadily increasing number of the-oretical papers, both theoretical papers as well as practical contributionscomplemented very well and made WSC 2008 an open and comprehensivediscussion forum.

Welcome Note by the World Federationon Soft Computing (WFSC) Chairman

On behalf of the World Federation on Soft Computing (WFSC) I would liketo thank you for your contribution to WSC 2008! The 13th online WorldConference on Soft Computing in Industrial Applications provides a uniqueopportunity for soft computing researchers and practitioners to publish highquality papers and discuss research issues in detail without incurring a hugecost. The conference has established itself as a truly global event on theInternet. The quality of the conference has improved over the years. TheWSC 2008 conference has covered new trends in soft computing to state ofthe art applications. The conference has also added new features such asvirtual exhibition and online presentation.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers for asuccessful conference. The quality of the papers is high and the conferencewas very selective in accepting the papers. Also many thanks to the authors, reviewers, sponsors and publishers of WSC 2008! I believe your hard workhas made the conference a true success.

Chairman of WFCSProfessor Rajkumar RoyWorld Federation on Soft Computing (WFSC)24th February 2009
