To enable prospective researchersconsider the appropriateness of a GIS and

qualitative approach/modelling techniquesto their chosen field of investigation

GIS is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking,integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying datarelated to positions on the Earth's surface.

Typically, a Geographical Information System is used forhandling maps of one kind or another.

With GIS, you can explore the spatial element of your datato display soil types, track crime patterns, analyze animal

migration patterns

Epidemiological Applications:- Analysis of disease distribution vector

borne, water borne, differential mortality

- Environmental risks- exposure to electromagnetic fields, lead hazards, prediction

of pedestrian injuries.

Quantitative vs qualitative.

Quantitative- concerned with

investigating things which we couldobserve and measure in some way(biology, chemistry etc.)

Qualitative-attempts to increase our

understanding ofwhy things are the waythey are in our social world and whypeople act the ways they do (psychology,sociology, anthropology)

Qualitative research is concerned withfinding the answers to questions whichbegin with: why? how?

Quantitative research, on the other hand,is more concerned with questions about:

how much? how many? how often? towhat extent?
